1.We have a low GDP because we rely on selling raw materials whose prices we don't control, and we run the power sector at a loss, in the name of 'cheap electricity'

2.State owned companies fail because they aren't run like private companies...innovate or perish.

I.

Power is bad not just because of corruption but because many Nigerians and government agencies don't pay their bills.

We can only get there if we go industrial...not by selling oil, cocoa, etc. All african countries are just like us...we sell cocoa, oil etc...and we don't control the price, and most of the time, the price is way below what can sustain us..

On the other hand, running our education sector and power sector at a loss...means we either take more loans to make up the deficit....or we risk seeing them collapse.(We have a functioning GSM secotr, because we let the GSM COMPANIES charge at a profit...and they made enough to fix things up. Why can't we do the same for educaton and power? Plus, oil is not earning us enough money to adequately fund educaiton...like it did in our father's time..when realtively fewer people went to university.)

As for taxes...oil our major earner is at a price that cannot sustain us. Agrucyuture too cannot sustain us nor can minerals. That's why we must become industrial.

All this things you stated still falls under bad government policies and corruption.

Take for example, why will electricity generation be on the "exclusive list" - which means only federal government can generate power.

As a private organisation, if you generate above 25MW, you will be required to direct it to National Grid.

And the National Grid does not have enough capacity to distribute all the power being generated (as a matter of fact, most generating companies in Nigeria generate Below their Capacity because DISCOS don't have the capacity to distribute.)

2. State Owned companies failed, not because they aren't run like private, but mostly because of corruption.

Imagine most of those who looted Nigeria Airways are currently in government. Many of them even founded their own airline after killing Nigeria airways.

With all the investigations that followed suit, and the report indicting people, No one has been prosecuted so far.

I do agree with you that we have to go industrial, as we can't just be exporting raw materials, but this will only be possible if government makes policies that support industrialisation.

It's the responsibility of the government to make policies that will support industrialisation bring investors into the country.

But so far, How many investor - friendly policy have the government made?

How easy is it to get a License to start a company, without bribing people?

How easy is it to start a company without getting killed by multiple taxation and bad government policies?

Like I said earlier, we are where we are today because of bad government policies and corruption.

If good policies have been brought up and implemented along the line, we won't be here today, and funding would never be an issue.

Good day.

1.Germany has a tax rate of 50% of the income, as well as a tax to gdp ratio of 45-50% and a GDP 20-30 times higher than ours. Plus, not everyone goes to university in Germany (most do paid apprenticeships from the time they are 15 or 16 years of age)

2.Finland has a high tax rate, and a high tax to gdp ratio too. Plus, like Germany it is a highly exporting industrial economy...meaning they have the revenue to pay for quality educaiton (They also take in a lot of foreign students who pay ).

3.Norway is an oil producing nation who produces far more oil than we do for a population not passing 20 million people...plus they also export a lot of industrial products, and tax their gdp well well...thus they can employ a lot of people

4.Nigeria
-Has a tax to gdp ratio of 6.1%
-Less than 40% of taxable people actually pay taxes
-We produce one fifith of the oil Norway produces for 220 million people.
-We don't export industrial products.
-Or tax rate is 0-24% (and below a certain income, many don't pay taxes..legally)
-Education budgets are somewhere around $1 billion for 200million people...whereas Canada spent $60 billion for primary education alone in one year.
-Corruption and bad governance whether APC OR PDP complicates matters.
=Fees are below $200 or less per semseter.

Lol.

Germany tax system depends on your income range. And the highest Tax rate is 45%, which applies to people earning above €274,000.

People earning under €10,000, pay 0% tax.

Finland runs similar wage - dependent tax system too.

For Norway, why can't Nigeria produce much more oil, if not for corruption and bad government policies?

Now, back to Nigeria.

How many Nigerians earn up to €1,000 monthly? Our minimum wage is just about €50 monthly.

If you earn this kind of wage in Germany, you don't pay any tax. shocked

Yes, corruption should go...but even then...Nigeria's problem is that we are not earning enough.

For instance, we spent $1.5billion on education alone in 2020. South Africa spent $25 billion on education alone in the same period..and they want to raise the money. South Africa has a GDP that is over twice to thrice that of Nigeria's.

Relying on selling raw materials whose prices we do not control is not the way forward.

Well, If not for corruption and bad government policies, we should probably be among the countries with the highest GDP.

Imagine how many state owned companies have been killed in the past because of corruption.

Imagine private companies that have to stop working due to bad government policies. Imagine those that have moved to other countries like Ghana because we couldn't fix ordinary electricity.

Everything still falls back on bad government policies and corruption.

And like I said earlier, if corruption and bad government policies didn't come in Along the line, we would never have had issues with funding, because our GDP will definitely be far higher than this, and we'll probably be among the top 3 richest countries.

Hiking school fees, Electricity Tarrif, Taxes, while failing to fix the fundamental problems of corruption and bad policy will implode the country sooner than later. It's only a matter of time, and how much more Nigerians can bare. shocked

Elementary education (i.e. the ability to read and write) should be the only form of Free and Mandatory education.

Well, if things weren't destroyed by Corruption, the source of funding won't be an issue.

Because our economy would have gotten bigger and better from what was obtainable then.

That policy was a silly policy. It may have seemed great when only hundreds go to school but they should have foreseen a time when millions would go to school and realized the unsustainability of free education in the face of low tax collection.

The socialist policies of AG has created a lot of economic problems in Western Nigeria (trade unions and unlawful cartels, bloated civil service, etc). It also made a lot of people give birth to kids they can't take care of because they believed the government would take control. If people understood that education has a real cost, then they will birth less children and also hold politicians more to account. But if it's free, what are you going to say? Dilapidated schools are a result.

But Germany, Finland, Norway and some other countries have been doing it for years. Are their schools "Dilapidated" as a result? shocked shocked shocked

Teams like Wolves, Leicester will be having 22 shots at goal with Arsenal having just 7. It was a terrible experience for us under Emery

Arteta brought more dignity and respect when he came.

Me I preferred Arteta to Emery.

No, I didn't watch the video.

But all articles I've seen online about the issue stated the dance competition happened in the female hostel.

Also, according to the articles, her course of study is MLS not Medicine and Surgery, I think a lot of people here mixed things up, probably because Medical Student was used in the title.

No one is saying they shouldn't party.
But not getting nude nor stripping within the school premises and not even in the open.
Even in the CLUB HOUSES, they have restrictions too, else your business will hit the rock.
Even a prostitute has got limits too.

People must learn to conform with the directives of the environment that upholds them.

Well, I have been following up your comments, and that of many other people insulting and calling the girl names.

In as much as I didn't support what she did, it happened in the FEMALE HOSTEL which means only FEMALES like herself were present during the dancing.

I don't know about US, but I know in the school I attended here in Nigeria, different kind of competitions happen in different hostels (especially during the hostel week), and whatever happens in the hostels stays there.

Even when there's no competition, boys walk around almost naked in the hostel I stayed in school - even bathing outside, and I believe same thing happens in female hostels too.

So, I don't think it makes any sense to expel her, since everything happened within their hostel - where many of them walk naked or even bath outside - without criticism.

I personally feel the person who recorded and posted the video online should be the one answering questions here. Things that happen in male or female only hostels should never be posted online.

In the intervening years, the MoS has repeatedly exposed the corruption and bribery that had festered behind the scenes in the 2018-2022 process, and barely anyone came out clean: not England’s 2018 bid nor the Spain-Portugal bid for the same year, nor South Korea’s for 2022, nor Australia’s.

England and Australia, for example, both effectively tried to bribe ExCo member Jack Warner, a notorious criminal from Trinidad, when unsuccessfully soliciting his vote. Spain meanwhile were in cahoots with Qatar over their own forbidden voting pact, and their bid leader was later censured for refusing to take part in an official inquiry into the matter.
