ASUU strike: Federal government extends ultimatum 58 minutes ago Abuja - The Federal Government on Monday extended the deadline for striking university lecturers to resume work to December 9. The government had earlier ordered the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resume work on December 4. The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, announced the new date while addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday. Okojie explained that the government decided to shift the deadline after it received notification of Prof. Festus Iyayi's funeral rites slated for between December 5 and 7. Iyayi, former President of ASUU, died on November 12 in auto crash in Lokoja on his way to attend the association’s meeting in Kano. According to Okojie, the decision is also to avoid a situation where government and ASUU will have to deal with the ultimatum during the funeral of the former ASUU President. “We just received information that the burial rites of Festus Iyayi begins on the December 5 and would last till December 7.Based on this information, government decided to shift the resumption deadline to December 9, to enable lecturers to participate in the burial.” The executive secretary said the directive had been communicated to the various universities Governing Councils and Vice Chancellors for onward transmission to the academic staff. Okojie added that there was no intention to victimise any lecturer for participating in the strike. He said the victimisation clause which members of ASUU were using to discredit the government, never came up when the unionists met with President Goodluck Jonathan on November 4. On the N200billion Revitalisation Fund which ASUU wanted government to disburse within two weeks, Okojie said the money had been deposited in an account in the Central Bank of Nigeria. He explained that the money could not be disbursed based on ASUU's demand because it was meant for capital projects. According to Okojie, the order does not require students to commence lectures immediately. He said any lecturer who resumed work after the expiration of the new deadline would not have his or her salary arrears paid. Okojie said government, as employer of labour, could not fold its arms while the institutions remained shut at the detriment of students. http://m.news24.com/nigeria/National/News/ASUU-strike-Federal-government-extends-ultimatum-20131204 |
k Fraih: If students affected by ASUU strike can still write AASU instead of 'ASUU' ,indeed education in Nigeria is to be questionededucation as a whole is not the problem but ASUU ... The students are a representation of what the lecturers (ASUU) teaches them, if lecturers teach wrong spelling is it the government fault for not installing good spelling facilities in the schools ? |
Ame Lon Ro: Its saddening when you guys leave the main topical issue, viz ASUU AND FG and begin to lambast yourselves. What exactly is the problem? Intolerance on nairaland? Wake up please and get back to the real issue discussed.its not just about signing ,if FG sign what they cant implement its same you who will ask why did they sign an unimplimentable agreement ? let both parties move grounds and achieve more rather than begin proud and rigid which wont help |
eagle, eye:and their four months (unworked for) salaries is not part of the collateral damages right? to gain a better work conditions you have to sacrifice four months salaries, the students lost four months of their accademic life for a better education system that they wont be part of without complaining. yet those that want to die and be buried in lecture theaters (70 years retirement age) dont want to sacrifice..... GOD is watchingin 3D |
please is the last/final admission list out? my little cousin applied to this university |
eagle, eye:also do yo know that if/when government release these funds ASUU are requesting it will go to the hands of same school managements (vice-chancellors, pro-chancellors, university senate etc) who could still miss-appropriate these funds and leave the university system in a no better state? do you realize that what ASUU are galvanateing for is just for a limited duration of time? what happens after the 1.1trillion gets exhausted? another fight another struggle, ending agitation that will cost students while lecturers gain salaries for not working |
eagle, eye:variably ASUU should also hold the university senate, vice chancellor, etc responsible and not just gov. funny how it sounds that everybody is involved in the spoil while some come out to claim saint and try to pottery others bad ... I didn't graduate the year I was surpose because I didn't give 4thousand naira for an A , is that also because gov. didn't fund infrastructure? , in my department then there were some CNC machines we never used, is that because gov. didn't fund research? ASUU use the little you have to put the government to shame is what am saying... putting eyes on more money wont solve it... CNC machines are there but not in use soon they will get outdated and ASUU will begin to cry foul.. |
Hearme: Hello, the strike wouldn't have occurred if the government has implemented the agreement since 2009. Therefore it is insincere for the government not to also pay them since it was the government who breached the contract.if its a breach of contract let them go to a competent court of law for a redress and leave the students out of this. the students suffered most as a result of this |
eagle, eye:because rather than doing our best in the way we can we resort to striking for more money, as if money will solve the backwards of nigeria, (charity they say begins at home) if ASUU are doing what they want the government to do the schools would have being better off than what we are talking about now... yes you may say they cant do much, then they should do little with what they have and lets see.. (example: I studied engineering 5years and the hostels were renovated (only painted) once in all my 5 years.. I know and am very sure 2million was budgeted every year for that renovation. yes I knew this because I had a close friend in the school senate and was also very close to one of the SUG president ... universities generate funds internally from post-utme, development fee, acceptance fee, ventures etc? what do they use these funds for? that we cant see changes no matter how small. what am saying is the solution to our problems are in our hands and not with the government, so stop looking up to the people you claim are insincere |
o eagle, eye:you have long graduated is a more reason for me to think you are an ASUU member and want to chop the oil mony in the guise of developing schools ... and who told you that our lecturers have their wards in public schools ? |
