Now, the Attorney General can cover his face in shame.

Nigeria official's $35m refrozen

Mr Ibori's assets are said to include a jet and London property
The London High Court has ordered the refreezing of former Nigerian governor James Ibori's $35m (£17m) assets that police think are the proceeds of crime.
The assets, believed to include a Bombardier private jet, were the subject of a restraint order in August.

It was lifted last week thanks in part to a letter from Nigeria's attorney general saying Mr Ibori had not been "charged, tried or convicted".

But now Mr Ibori cannot use his assets while the police make their case.

He is one of several former Nigerian state governors who remain wanted for questioning in London on money-laundering charges.

Senate quashes Enwerem's impeachment

The Senate on Wednesday vacated the impeachment of its former leader, Evan Enwerem, to allow it accord him all the privileges and entitlements as former Senate President. It also resolved to sit in a joint session with the House of Representatives on Thursday at a valedictory session in honour of the late lawmaker. The Senate Majority leader, Teslim Folarin, who moved the motion argued that it became imperative in view of the need for the hallowed chamber to only not participate in the burial ceremony of Enwerem, but also pay him due respect. The Act that provided for remuneration of former Presidents, Vice Presidents, Senate Presidents and Speakers of the House of Representatives barred all impeached officers from benefiting. The Guardian gathered that this might have informed the move. But Senator Jubril Aminu, in a counter motion, asked the Senate to tread with care in vacating the impeachment, pointing out that it could amount to setting dangerous precedent. He said it was important that the reasons for the impeachment of Enwerem must be determined first before a decision could be taken on reversing it. Senate Chief Whip, Senator Kanti Bello, who seconded the counter motion, stated that there was no provision

The House of Representative panel set up to investigate the N628 million contract scam rocking the National Assembly today submitted its report to the full House with a guilty verdict on the Speaker Patricia Olubunmi Etteh.

The David Idoko committee found Speaker Etteh guilty of misappropriation of funds and many other allegations leveled against her.

Details are still sketchy but the Speaker is expected to resign rather than face impeachment by the full House.

Eaglets’ Feat in Line with Our Vision 2020’
09.16.2007

President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua yesterday said the victory of the nation's Under-17 national team, the Golden Eaglets at FIFA World Cup Competition in South Korea was a major step towards achieving his administration's goal to make Nigeria one of the world's 20 leading economies by Year 2020. cheesy
Speaking at a reception in Abuja in honour of the 22 players and the coaching crew who last Sunday defeated Spain by 3-0 to win the World Cup for the third time since 1985 when the bi-annual competition began, Yar'Adua said: "what you have done is in line with our vision to place Nigeria among the to 20 economies of the world by 2020."
Yar'Adua, who was visibly elated told the crowd that turned out for the reception held at the Eagle Square that he and others in government would strive to achieve the 2020 vision, so that the young ones would build on it and make the country one of the 10 topmost developed nations in the future.
The team won all its seven matches, scoring 16 goals and conceding four goals to emerge champions.
Yar'Adua described the achievement as the outcome of doggedness, determination and patriotism and called on other Nigerians to emulate the Golden Eaglets.
He said what the players had seen in terms of reception since their return on Tuesday was just a fraction of the feeling Nigerians had towards them.
Speaking before the President made his speech, the Minister/Chairman of National Sports Commission, Alhaji Hassan Gimba, said the honour done the country by the team was not only savoured in Nigeria, but the whole of Africa.
Gimba said government realised the importance of sports to national development and would not relent in supporting the sector.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Chairman NFA, Alhaji Sani Lulu, said the association would groom the team to form the bulk of future U-21 and the senior national team.
Lulu said the association would also pick its team for the next edition of the tournament to be hosted by Nigeria in 2009 from the various U-13 teams across the country.
He thanked the government for the grand reception, saying the team felt honoured by its magnitude. "Victory is sweet, it was achieved through hardwork, patriotism, dedication and above all prayers," he said.
Also speaking on the Golden Eaglets feat yesterday, Minister of Information and Communications, Mr. John Odey, described it as a "hard earned glory that should be preserved."
Odey who spoke to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Interna-tional Airport, Abuja, at a reception organised for the team said "the significance of what we are celebrating is that it is a hard earned glory and any glory that is earned should be preserved," he said.
The minister, who admitted that Nigeria failed to achieve this glory in sports in the past eight years, said "now that we have earned it, we just have to collectively preserve it."
"Our celebrating with the lads is to spur them and encourage Nigerian youths in other endeavours to earn glory for themselves and the country," Odey said.
Members of the Golden Eaglets had arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport at about 8.34 am and were received by the FCT Minister, Alhaji Umar Modibbo and Odey.
Modibbo and Odey accompanied by other government officials and NFA Chairman Sani Lulu led the Golden Eaglets to a waiting crowd hich included cultural troupes and school children.
The troupes from Abuja and Jos, the Nigeria Police Band and the Nigeria Football Supporters Club treated the team to cultural dances and songs. The team was later led to the Presidential Lounge of the airport before being taken through Airport Road to the Abuja City Gate in a long convoy.
They rode in a bust that had a banner that read: "Bravo our Golden Eaglets, we are proud of you."

Alamieyeseigha’s Trial:Conduct Tribunal Bashes FG,

The Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja on Tuesday accused the federal government of telling cock and bull story over the health condition of former Bayelsa State governor,Diepreye Alamieyeseigha who is standing trial over false declaration of assets and operation of foreign accounts.
The tribunal chairman,Justice Constance Momoh who flared up over government’s position that Alamieyeseigha’s health was ‘shaky,’ told the director of public prosecution, Salihu Halilu outrightly that the attorney general’s office should withdraw the matter if it has compromised on the case.

The article below was written by Dr David West when Alamieyeseigha was arrested in london.

It is so old, yet so true- a prophesy if we may call it one.

Nigerians are predictable. Our sense of positive judgement has been corroded by God-knows-what.

Wabara travelled all the way to Bayelsa to "represent our people".
Who are "our people"? Corrupt politicians like himself? Fie! Fie for shame!
Tomorrow, their will be a thanksgiving service and the clergy will tell of how God delivered Paul and Silas from the prison. He will liken his travails to those of the prophets.

Quote
In the depraved psyche of the Nigerian, Alamieyeseigha, in all likelihood will return home to a robust and roaring reception if the British authorities spare him a hefty jail term for his alleged crime of money laundering. This expected reception will be consistent with the meaning of his name, "Diepreye" - "this is my own share, " for the embattled governor will indeed collect his own share of the gratuitousness that awaits him from his people, the Ijaws. It is a befitting irony as it belies the vitiated relationship between the rulers and the ruled, but more importantly, the tacit support rendered to the rulers by the ruled even in the face of perceived malfeasance and political vulgarity.

The giant drums beats will be heard several miles away from the Port-Harcourt International Airport where he most likely will make his landing. Perhaps, they will be heard as far as the campus of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, RSUST, which sits a respectable distance away from the airport. The VIP lounge will be closed and all travelers will be told to vacate for the arriving governor. Security will be at the highest, fierce-looking and heavily armed mobile policemen will guard the arrival lounge to the very routes the governor will take to his home state. There will be many in his motorcade, and the Nigerian flag will be flying high on the hood (bonnet) of his official pristine Mercedes Benz with the plate number "BSG 1", (Bayelsa State Government), denoting the first citizen of the state.

He will be accompanied by his sidekick, the deputy governor, Dr. Jonathan Goodluck, who had held the fort while the governor was "persecuted" by the colonial masters. Some favored state commissioners and statesmen will also be there to reaffirm their allegiance and fealty to the chief executive, less he forgets. Many opportunists will be present to see this historic event of the return of the great son of the Ijawland. There is simply no viable and acceptable reason for them to miss this occasion for anything on earth. Big traditional chiefs, not-so big ones, small ones, position seekers, "yesmen" (and women), civil servants, innocent school children, favor seekers, boot-lickers, and even some of his political enemies (though for different reasons) will also be there.

The only paved street, the main street in Yenagoa, the state capital, and the only two gas stations will be draped with welcome signs - "Welcome, Governor-General of the Ijaw Nation." Others will read, "Welcome home, Papa". Yet, some more will read, "God has heard our prayers and our enemies have been shamed." Once the arriving governor steps foot on the soil (Bayelsa), he will be received by yet another cadre of Ijaw chiefs, the same ones, perhaps, who went to Aso Rock to plead on his behalf. Their presence will be self-serving and multi-purposed, one carefully laced with egoistic tendencies. But that is fine for it is the very nature of the game. The importance of their presence is not lost on them for they know that it is important for the governor to take note of their loyalty in light of the handsome reward that will come at the opportune time. In this high stakes game of attention seeking, the drum beats will be elevated hitting its desired crescendo. The drummers and dancers, also seeking the governor's attention, will max their efforts to the high heavens in hopes of drumming some nairas their way.

Soon, it will be the turn of his fellow governors in the various government houses across the country. They will start making the roll call in Yenagoa to pledge solidarity with their comrade. Perhaps, Gov. Ngige of Anambra will be the first to extend a hand of comfort to his friend who was by his side during his litigious troubles with his godfather, Chris Ubah and the presidency. It would seem, after all, they both share a common enemy in the presidency. The Plateau State helmsman, Joshua Dariye, will also be there with an apology and a welcome on his lips. He will apologize because were it not for the fact that he absconded to Nigeria when he was arrested by the same London Police and later granted bail, Alamieyeseigha would have received a softer treatment and allowed to return to Nigeria pending further investigations.

For the Rivers State governor, Dr. Peter Odili, it will be a very short hike across the state lines to offer soothing words to his wounded colleague. Though in different political camps within the PDP, with the former belonging to the Obasanjo's camp and the later, Atiku's, the injurious nature of the governor's ordeal will dissipate any such dissimilitude and conjure a truce, even momentarily. Other governors will arrive one after the other, in style, to pay homage. Those who could not make it will send emissaries who will do well to pass on their welcome message. Yet again, it will be the turn of the traditional chiefs who will come in droves to present him with gifts and dubious chieftaincy titles. They will confer on him a new title - the highest in the land, the "Amanyanabo" of Ijawland, meaning, "the owner of Ijawland". May the good Lord forbid that their largesse and generosity cease at this point. They will proceed and present him special gifts in the form of wives with some as young as twelve, thirteen, fourteen, etc. If for nothing, they will be symbolic wives who will immediately go on the governor's payroll.

At this junction, the way will be paved for the institutions of higher education in the state to romance the governor. They will bestow on him multiple honorary doctorate degrees - letters of this, and doctor of that. This will be added to the one the governor already bought from the University of Northern Washington, an Internet degree-minting institution where he earned a doctorate degree in Strategic Management in only six months and with distinction, at that. But as is the case in this poorly developed state, the governor will have to wait to amass those honorary degrees until at such a time when he builds viable institutions of higher learning as there is none in spite of the N8 billion monthly federal allocation that goes into the coffers of the state.

In heaven's name, let no one forget the clergy in this carnival, of sorts. In the coming Sundays, there will be thanksgiving services at churches across the state. The governor will thank God for delivering him from the hands of the devil and for returning him to his people where he belongs. The clergy, not to lose out in this windfall, will offer prayers on his behalf, they know that a big donation is coming. They will ask the almighty to protect him from his enemies and give him the wisdom to rule the state. They will plead for Him to destroy his enemies and prosper his friends, which means they too will be prospered.

It will be time for the big companies to join the fray, even the oil companies owned by the British, will attempt to reconcile with the governor by taking out huge advertisements in the newspapers to welcome and praise him for his foresight and excellent leadership. They will distance themselves from the actions of the London Police. Smaller companies will spend their meager resources to take out ads in the newspaper exalting the governor and magnifying his achievements. There is something in there for them too, by so doing they know that state contracts garnished with juicy kickbacks and unearned dividends will come their way. Other stakeholders, namely members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, with the majority leader being the son-in-law of the governor, will also be there to re-pledge their loyalty in more ways than one to the "Father Christmas" in Yenagoa. This is after they must have received their share of the oil money in exchange for a promise not to pursue impeachment proceedings against the governor for the international disgrace bequeathed them by his alleged criminal actions.

Joining the carnival at this junction will be historians, speechwriters, spokesmen and women, press secretaries and journalists who will be well-paid to re-write history. The London Police will be the vile party in this whole affair while Alamieyeseigha will be painted in bright angelic colors. They will scream on the pages of the newspapers and distort the story of the governor's travails in London. There will be no mention of the millions of pounds found on him at the airport. There will also be no mention of the various mansions he owns in the UK, Nigeria and the US. Also going unmentioned will be the countless bank accounts in Yenagoa where millions of dollars have been lodged by various associates and family members of the governor. How dare they mentioned where the governor got the funds to pay for his stomach operation in Germany.

In this new story that will be told to Nigerians and the world, no one will hear of his record of non-performance and the rueful state of affairs in his state. They will put out a press statement claiming that they have a written apology from the British authorities sent to the governor through the British High Commission in Abuja, a claim no one can verify. They will inculpate others for the travails of the governor - Obasanjo, the federal government, his political enemies in the state and beyond, the British government, the London Police, even the United Nations, if care is not taken, might be pulled in as a party to this grand conspiracy against the governor and the Ijawnation he leads. In the end, a greater portion of the blame will be heaped on the horned head of the devil for planting a perfidious seed in the minds of the aforementioned parties in a fruitless effort to distract the governor from his fine work.

After all said and done, the governor might even get a call from Aso Rock requesting a meeting with the president. A presidential jet with all the trappings of power fully encamped will be flown to Port-Harcourt to fetch His Excellency. Thereafter, the two men will speak to the press and claim that they have reconciled their differences in the interest of the party, but most importantly, in the interest of one Nigeria. The president will then shower praises on the governor calling him a man of the people and an exemplary governor of all times. The governor will readily return the favor calling the president's election the best event in the country since October 1, 1960. Moments later, Alamieyeseigha's "sins" will be washed away by the streaming sweat and blood of the ordinary Nigerians who have been the true victims all along. It will be business as usual and all the parties involved will live happily thereafter in the great country called Nigeria.

I was curious as to what the take from the police would be regarding this whole "Nigeria scam" stuff, and I ended up speaking with the Scotland Yard Computer Crime squad. Basically because it's quite costly to lodge international investigations, it only really happens when vast amounts of money have been lost. They would, however, like people who have lost money to scams, report it to their local police headquarters so they can at least have some sort of view to how frequently this is happening (assuming you obviously have the time/want to get around to doing this) although it's unlikely that much will actually happen in terms of being able to get your money back.

Apparently they have someone who lost a 7-figure sum which is still being investigated, and that was lodged about 2.5 years ago. It's not a fast process.

Needless to say, be very wary , and if they say they're paying via PayPal, make sure you check your actual account through the website and not rely on email notifications. PayPal does not ask you for any postal tracking number before transferring funds.

As per previous about dodgy paypal etc, I put a phone on ebay for sale and the winner, despite my 'Uk only' warning, was based in the US but wanted it posted to, guess where? Yeh you got it!! Nigeria! Alarm bell #1. So I get 2 paypal emails saying a) the funds have come from the buyer, and b) they'll be in my paypal account once I provide proof of shipping. This, and 2 spelling errors got me going so I contacted paypal and they said the funds would show in my account no matter what. So I politely told the buyer to stick it and better luck next time. Reported to paypal and ebay ( the buyer became unregistered almost immediately after the sale ) and that's about it. Old Bill won't look into it cos I'm not the landed gentry or shifting millions to the labour party. Basically, as previous mails have said, and wisely so: if it looks too good to be true it is. Follow your gut ( especially after a dodgy kebab ) and be wary. Unfortunate. but the economics of today demand it. Be careful, take care, and don't let it get to you.

I didnt know about these bloody scam and was scammed yesterday, saw paypayl email, and trusted it without thinking about loggin into my paypal account and checking if the transaction ID was for real! This guy did not give me a nigerian address thogh, it was an address in london, so i have that.

1. What you recon they do in this case?
do they wait outside some arb address and sign for the goods and hit the road?

In this case wouldnt it be handy to have royal mail request ID on signing for the goods, this way he would be screwed, unless he had a fake id which corresponded to the recipients name.

2. Any of you guys tried to catch these buggers? if i had known i could have had a mob of police waiting around the corner for the delivery, then again, how do police prove that this guy was a scammer?

3. I was thinking of tracing his ip within minutes of him sending me an email, maybe tracing the internet cafes this guy works etc.

Anyway,im giong to wait until it happens again, i would like to see if he uses the London delivery same address, and if not, track his movements and see whether its a randon thing or not (ie. he stands outside an arb address waiting for the van).

Answers anyone??

one of these scammers contacted me 2 weeks ago, I sort of knew he was one but didnt want to be quick to judge only because he had an accent!
went ahead and he sent me a cheque for 3,000 pounds instead of 900 pounds which is what the article was worth, needless to say, the stamps on the envelope showed the cheque came from nigeria!

There are plenty of sites that give tips on how to bait 419 scammers but it is a potentially dangerous activity if they know your personal contact details/home address, I would think.

Unsurprisingly, they are likely to possess fake IDs and be hard to trace, (even if they sign for the goods its not necessarily particularly good proof of being party to deception from a legal point of view - Police have raided buildings with dozens of people sitting around dozens of PCs and have been unable to prosecute).

I read a cracking online article where a teenager knew he was being scammed for his Apple laptop and so he constructed one made of cardboard, posted it to north London and had a pal film it arriving at a barbers shop but I can't find the link.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scam_baiting

http://news.scotsman.com/topics.cfm?tid=759&id=272762003

You are unlikely to get a mob of Police sitting waiting in anticipation of a potential minor crime - an estimated 250,000 people are supposed to be engaged in this activity in Nigeria alone

googling alternative to paypal gives
the below

Those of you who were affected by the 5 day PayPal problems earlier this month know first hand how frustrating things can get if you only have one method of accepting payments online.

I have looked around for some alternatives, because I too had only been using PayPal to accept payments for my online auctions.

Here are some alternatives . . .

http://www.propay.com (like a merchant account without all the fees)

http://www.bidpay.com (closest competitor to PayPal)

http://www.bitpass.com (a little different)

http://www.firepay.com

http://www.neteller.com (based in London)

http://www.checkfree.com (another popular alternative)

Yes, I sent a message to Paypal.com and all they did was apologize that they were unable to include Nigeria among the country list.

Thanks for the links you provided, I'll work on them.

Stay blessed.

Hi Monty,
Thanks for the links, however most of them seem to require US residency; which I'm not.

I've not been able to register fully on any yet.

Thanks a lot.

then can i suggest you do your own due diligance, how do other companies do it in nigeria? what about direct bank transfer most people would trust that, I see that as the problem, your countrmen have dragged nigerias name into the mud and associated it with crime and fraud as in romania you really have your work cut out for you.

what is it that you are selling or doing?

PoliticsRe: Bayelsa State Governor Escapes from London, UK (Now in Nigeria!) by azorjiu(m): 4:09pm On Aug 31, 2007
Flash back!

http://nigeriaworld.com/feature/publication/david-west/100405.html

Train ticket collectors jailed after £45k scamAug 14 2007

CROOKED train ticket collectors who used their machines to issue thousands of pounds worth of rail passes and sell them on the black market have been jailed.

South West Trains employees Gregory Akinyode, 40, and Gbadedo Ishola, 43, helped fleece the company of £45,000 during the year-long scam.

The pair used stolen credit cards to buy tickets from their issuing machines before selling them on cut-price to willing buyers they found in pubs.

Both men were working on lines operating out of Waterloo station across South London and Surrey at the time of their arrest in September 2005.

James Norman, prosecuting, said that at least two other members of staff were involved in the swindle.

He said one of them, Nena Dappah, a 30-year-old ticket office worker who lived in Rycroft Road, Lewisham, is still on the run after fleeing to Ghana when a warrant was issued for her arrest.

Mr Norman said: "There are approximately 340 fraudulent transactions that form the basis of the Crown's allegation.

"That works out at around 37 per month during the period of the fraud, so it was prolonged and it was also lucrative."

Akinyode also had a diary listing credit card numbers. When police searched his and Ishola's lockers they found credit cards belonging to other people.

Southwark Crown Court heard father-of-three Akinyode had worked twice for the rail company since 1999.

He is currently employed as a porter at the Trinity Hospice in Clapham Common Road.

Father-of-four Ishola had worked for South West Trains for seven years up until his arrest.

Judge William Wood said Akinyode was responsible for £12,777.25 of the fraud and jailed him for two years on Friday.

He said: "This case has very serious features and involves a prolonged course of criminal conduct in which a number of conspirators working alongside you have caused loss to your employers that was really quite substantial, in the order of £45,000.

"There is no appropriate sentence other than custody for this serious, planned and deeply dishonest offence."

Ishola, who was responsible for transactions worth £2,070 and was involved in the scheme for a shorter period, was sentenced to just nine months in prison.

Akinyode, of Mottisfont Road, Abbey Wood, Kent, and Gbadedo, of Charles Court, Avenue Road, Erith, Kent, admitted conspiracy to defraud South West Trains by issuing rail tickets using compromised bank cards between November 29, 2004 and September 7, 2005.

Good news. More news on the death of militants please.

http://www.leadershipnigeria.com/product_info.php?products_id=11113
The Joint Military Task Force yesterday morning killed a notorious cult leader, George Soboma in Port Harcourt, the River State Capital.

This followed a raid on a hideout of the militants who have been unleashing terror on residents in the past few days.

The situation has created tension in the oil rich state leading to a high presence of heavily armed soldiers.

The JMTF Spokesman, Maj. Sagir Musa, confirmed the development.

I'm sorry the last paragraph of any report on nigeria will still remain

No. I don't think it's going to be the same money.
What we're talking about here is a new naira note.
If you make all the money, say 1 million naira now,
when the change becomes effective what you will
get in exchange is 10 thousand naira.
