Faulty calculator. I meant N300. Thanks for the correction.

I like the concept of 50 kobo coming back in note.

Govt realigns the naira, phases out currencies next year
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Tuesday announced plans for the revaluation and realignment of the naira to make it competitive with the United States (US.) dollar. Under the new plan, announced by the CBN governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo in Abuja, the naira is to be realigned to the Pre- Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) regime of 1986 where it was at par with the US. dollar. Consequently, the existing N1000; N500; N200; N100 will revert to N10; N5; N2 and N1 respectively while a higher note of N20 denomination is to be introduced. Also, the current N5 note is to revert to 50 kobo while coins are to be re-introduced ranging from one kobo; two kobo; five kobo ; 10 kobo to 20 kobo. The new plan which will come into full force from the of August 1 next year, is to form the basis of wages; naira assets; prices and contract regimes in Nigeria.

very good news because if u make 20,000naira a month u are not far off from people in other parts of the world. It would encourage people to go back to Africa and also work .
No. It means that if you were earning N30,000 before, would be earning N30,000/100 = N3000 in the new regime. That's what I think - no reference material consulted though.

The naira will be re-denominated by august next year, according to Soluda. N1.26 will be equivalent to $1. Will this in any way improve the value of the naira?

Nigeria aims for naira convertibility in 2009
Tue 14 Aug 2007, 10:30 GMT

[-] Text [+] ABUJA, Aug 14 (Reuters) - The Nigerian central bank will eliminate all restrictions on capital account transfers and make its naira <NGN=> fully convertible by Jan. 1 2009, Goveror Chukwuma Soludo said on Tuesday.

The bank will gradually phase out its foreign exchange auctions in favour of interbank dealing and distribute fiscal revenues to states in dollars to deepen its foreign exchange market, Soludo told a gathering of press, government officials and diplomats.

Africa's top oil exporter will also re-denominate the naira from August 1 next year, removing two zeros, so that 100 old naira will become 1 new naira, he said.

You get more jobs as a door man.
There is also the possibility of working as a bouncer on weekends
which means you could get paid cash. Getting paid cash means
that your NI will not be violated.

Maximus 5 pounds an hour? That's less than the minimum wage here. I myself am a student. I have never earned anything less than 6.5 since I came. I have done a job that paid 13 pounds/hour, but that doesn't come often.

If you are a student and do 20 hrs/week, you will be exempted from tax.

Working and studying in the UK- very difficult. You will earn enough to pay your accommodation, travel and upkeep. That's all.

If you are a guy, go for security course and get your SIA licence. If you are a lady, register for care training as soon as you arrive here. You get paid up to 8 pounds/hour. But please, concentrate on your course. Don't abuse your NI number else your application will be rejected when you apply for extension. I know at least 3 people who have been rejected recently for doing more that the allowed 20 hours/week.

Embattled former Abia State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu currently facing charges of laundering of N3.1 billion state funds may be charged for forgery in the United States of America. The ex-governor is being accused of forging a letter from Brigham Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts, US requesting his presence for his wife’s surgery.

This development is coming on the heels of claims by the counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Jacob that THE SUN Newspapers owned by the former governor remains the property of the Federal Government pending the determination of the case on the frozen assets of Kalu.

Kalu in a letter to an Abuja Federal High Court had sought for permission to travel to the United States on the ground that, “I have just received information through Victor Onochie (by fax) to the effect  that my wife is due for a major surgery on  8th August in Brigham and women’s Hospital in Massachusetts, USA.

But the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, MA, through Dr. Kwan and  Heather Black, both assistants to Dr. Peter Black, the alleged signatory to the Kalu’s letter denied knowledge of such letter.

Diaspora nigerians are to blame.
Majority of them don't see anything good in nigeria.

They see evil in everything nigerian.
I have tried so hard to understand why it is so.

hi Nairaland users are u saying if you donot have more than 2yrs work experience u can't get a student visa to uk? wht if i have my school fees and i apply wont it be approved? not worked for over a yr post nysc

honest answers plsssssss
Work experience is not a requirement for student visa.

Ensure your documents are straight and you meet all the requirements.

Paying your fees in full could enhence your chances, but don't bank on that.

Freshly issued passport is not a problem. The age your passport is immaterial here.

Ensure there is enough money in the statement you are presenting.
If you send a clean application and get rejected (God forbid!), appeal the decision.
Over 75% of appeal are successful. Good luck.

Did you take it manly/womanly and saw it as one of those things?

Did you wash the news down with a whole crate of star?

the amount can only pay your tuition.

you have to prove beyond all reasonable
doubts that you can stay here without recourse
to public funds. The only way to do this is to
fatten up the account balance.

the answers to the questions will determine

When I finished all the gist wey full my mouth, he then asked if i could send

from http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/breaking_news/article01

Nigeria begins usage of ECOWAS passport July 25
Beginning from July 25 this year, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will officially stop the issuance of the current Nigerian international passport and commence the issuance of the harmonised ECOWAS smart passport (e Passport). But the machine readable passport currently in use, will continue to exist alongside the harmonised ECOWAS passport for one year before being eventually phased out. Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mr. Joseph Udeh on Thursday began a sensitisation campaign to create the needed awareness for the new regime. He told newsmen in Abuja that the project, which was initiated in 2003, would be officially flagged-off by President Umaru Yar'Adua on July 25. Udeh said the new passport would be driven by an electronic chip. It would contain biometric data including finger prints. Noting that Nigeria would be the first country in Africa to adopt the electronic passport system, Udeh is convinced that the new regime would go a long way to redeem the image of the Nigerian passport and make it more acceptable in the international community. The Immigration chief put the price of the new passport at N8,750, adding that the current version still goes for N5,100.

PoliticsRe: Yar’adua: 2011 Polls Will Be Credible by azorjiu(m): 7:24pm On Jul 04, 2007
There is every need to start now to plan for 2011. The case of starting preparations at the 11th hours has been the reason for massive failure in our policies. You don't expect him to wait until december 2010 to start the electoral reform.

Our inability to plan ahead of time should be discouraged. In developed countries, changes are proposed, in some cases, 20 ahead of time. That is called long term planning. The bill for ID card was approved in the UK some 2 years ago, but the whole programme will start in 2008. Same as the smoking ban in public places that came into effect last sunday.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
TravelRe: Nigerians In The UK Are So Stingy by azorjiu(m): 2:54pm On Jul 04, 2007
A friend told of how he sent 100 pounds to his auntie. The lady told everyone in the village. Now the boy is in trouble. Everyone calls asking for 100 pounds.

For all those whining about UK guys being stingy with calls and money, remember that you are not the only one calling. Someone just rang before you did.

I call my immediate family in nigeria as often as I can. They also call when they don't hear from me. They don't give drop-calls. They understand the situation here more than most of my friends.

But to tell the truth, some of my friends from nigeria call me. I call them too, but more regularly. They are my good friends because they don't ask for money when they call. They don't "flash" me either. They call to hear from me.

My cousin called couple of weeks ago. He asked for money to set up a business. I told him I didn't have and he kept on calling. It's annoying when people become a thorn in the flesh.

And do you know what is so annoying? My access card to my university has just been stopped because I'm still owing 1000 pounds. I need to pay up to be able to gain access to library, laboratory etc. I am supposed to be doing my experiment (for my thesis) in the lab right now, but I don't have access. I can't check my last semester result online because my account has been suspended. In the midst of this, I keep on getting threatning calls from home.

I always tell my multitude of friends to write me via e-mail. I will reply. But all claim they want to hear my voice.

The heavens were opened when I came here. People I never spoke to before, people that never spoke to me before, everybody started writing, asking for connections, money and return calls.

Until I came here, I never bothered anyone abroad with a  call. I always sent e-mails since  it is affordable from nigeria.

Maybe America is better. I have a sister in the US and she's doing well. I also know about nigerians who're doing pretty ok here. It depends of status.  I don't believe students in the US (who are not in any form of scholarship) are better off that their counterparts in the UK. I will be travelling to America end of this month. I will see if US is better. Maybe I need to work towards relocating there if it is the eldo ra do.

I have the intention of helping my friends whenever I'm able to. I know who my real friends are.
