Lagos is reaping the positive benefits of Tinubu's strengths and leadership, Tinubu stood toe to toe with the feds and the feds blinked. Fashola did the same and the feds blinked first. Legacy

Chief Awolowo is remembered for building the first stadium, Liberty Statium, Ibadan in West Africa, first television station WNTV in Africa, running the best civil service in Africa at the time (in the Western Region)

He would also be credited with coining the name "Naira" for Nigeria's currency (formerly known as the Nigerian Pound) as the Federal Commissioner of Finance under the Military Government of General Yakubu Gowon. Today, he is remembered by many Nigerians and non-Nigerians as the best nigerian president that never ruled.


Chief Awolowo was respected by Kwame Nkrumah, and some politicians in the West continue to invoke his name, his policies, and the popular slogan of his Action Group party—"Life More Abundant"—during campaigns. He was also the author of several publications on the political structure and future prospects of Nigeria. These works include Path to Nigerian Freedom, Thoughts on the Nigerian Constitution, and Strategies and Tactics of the People Republic of Nigeria.

THE BEST PRESIDENT THAT NEVER RULED NIGERIA

When he died in 1987. He was described, as the best President Nigeria never had, by those that made sure he never reigned in the post for one day. Despite all he did for all, when he was elected as a Premier in the old Western Region of  Nigeria. The most out-spoken and result oriented politician in Nigerian political history, never came to power.  

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, was nullisecondos in political and economic achievement in Nigeria and even Africa. If I should ask; in what country in Africa was the first television station? Most people will say may be Egypt, some will say South-Africa and I will not be surprised if some say “the Gold coast”  now known as Ghana. But all these answers are wrong.

Awolowo brought the first television station in Africa to the Western region of Nigeria in the late fifties. A fit he achieved when he was the premier of that region.  

Awo! As his die-hard followers fondly call him; was the first person in Africa, that said education should be the right of a citizen and not a previledge hence, it should be free.

Being a man that practice whatever he preaches. He went ahead to declare a free education in the then Western region of Nigeria, which in history is the first and only. Moreover, the first modern stadium in Nigeria and still one of the best in the country, the liberty station was built during its administration.

He also built a gigantic building names the “ cocoa house”, where all farmers that grows the cash crop “cocoa” comes and sell to the government before, the government later resell to companies and foreign countries. This really helped the farmers in selling at a profit. Bye to the days they sell directly and lose despite all their labouring.

Obafemi Awolowo, a legal practitioner and a renowned politician covered his era like a colossus and what he achieved has not been neared talk less of been equaled.

There is an adage that says “show me your friend and I will tell you who you are” no wonder, he was a close friend of the great Kwame Nkurumah of Ghana and was given the honour and previledge of delivering a paper on his friend’s first memorial lecture.

Awolowo! a selfless man. Awo! gave hope to the hopeless.

Awo! turned education into a necessity and not a luxury.

Awo! made health care free so that the masses can live longer life and enjoy life to the fullest. Awo! Practiced modern political Ideology during the Dark Age, in a dark continent.

No wonder many people love to hate him not because of anything but all because his Ideologies were too complex for them to comprehend.

A times, I sit and wonder if this man was from the West i.e. Europe, I ponder what the West would have turned to.
I pray and hope that one day his name will be written, where it really belongs in the history of Nigeria, Africa and indeed the world.

One more time, Awo was not the president of Nigeria, he was elected and charged to administrate the western region, that's what he took oath to do and he did a fine Job and I don't mind giving you a long list of his achievements. Yes he did a lot for his people, that was his Job as the administrator of the western region, I don't know what part of his Job as premier of western region you do not understand. He was not the president of Nigeria. Also, most of Awo's achievements was outstanding, measurable and photo copied nation wide.


On the other hand, Zik didn't give a shit about his people, all he wanted was to be a figure head president and boy boy to his hausa masters. Greed, yeye and unattainable ambitions and shortsightedness got the best oh him.

Just like Awo, Zik was the premier of the eastern region so if you wanna talk about achievements, lets stack their achievements in their respective regions side by side and compare.

Also, why didn't Zik listen to Awo in '59 and declare independence in the south instead joining the hausas and giving the northerners time and opportunity to get ready and formulate plans against the south. That crucial single mistake and cruel deception remains the only reason why we're in a mess.

The Nigerian National Assembly has approved an annual basic salary of N3.5 million (about US$ 30,000) for President Umaru Yar’Adua, according to Friday’s edition of most Nigerian newspapers.

Under the new dispensation, the basic annual salary of the President is N3,514,705 as against the former N1.405 million.

This is besides allowances which bring the total remuneration of the President in a year to N10.899 million (about US$ 93,000).

In 1956 Moshood Abiola started his professional life as bank clerk with Barclays Bank plc in Ibadan, South-West Nigeria. After two years he joined the Western Region Finance Corporation as an executive accounts officer before leaving to Glasgow, Scotland to pursue his higher education.

In Glasgow he received 1st class in political economy, commercial law and management accountancy. He also received a distinction from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.

On his returm to Nigeria he worked as a senior accountant at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital, then went onto Pfizer, before joining the ITT Corporation, where he later rose to the position of Vice President, Africa and Middle-East of the entire corporation which was head-quartered in the United States.

As a result Moshood Abiola spend much of his time and made most of his money in the United States, whilst retaining the post of chairman of the corporation's Nigerian subsidiary.

In addition to his duty's throughout the Middle-East and Africa, Moshood Abiola invested heavily in Nigeria and West Africa. He set up Abiola Farms, Abiola bookshops, Radio Communications Nigeria, Wonder bakeries, Concord Press, Concord Airlines, Summit oil international ltd, Africa Ocean lines, Habib Bank, Decca W.A. ltd, and Abiola football club.

In addition to this he also magaged to perform his duties as Chairman of the G15 business council, President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Patron of the Kwame Nkrumah Foundation, Patron of the WEB Du Bois foundation, trustee of the Martin Luther King foundation and director of the International Press Institute[4].


Moshood Abiola sprang to national and international prominence as a result of his philanthropic activities. The Congressional Black Caucus of the United States of America issued the following tribute to Moshood Abiola:


From 1972 until his death Moshood Abiola had been conferred with 197 traditional titles by 68 different communities in Nigeria, in response to the fact that his financial assistance resulted in the construction of 63 secondary schools, 121 mosques and churches, 41 libraries, 21 water projects in 24 states of Nigeria, and was grand patron to 149 societies or associations in Nigeria. In this way Abiola reached out and won admiration across the multifarious ethnic and religious divides in Nigeria.

In addition to his work in Nigeria, Moshood Abiola was a dedicated supporter of the Southern African Liberation movements from the 1970's and he sponsored the campaign to win reparations for slavery and colonialism in Africa and the diaspora. Chief Abiola, personally rallied every African head of state, and every head of state in the black diaspora to ensure that Africans would speak with one voice on the issues
