It not at all common in Nigeria.
However,the payment of dowry is nothing more then symbolic.Apart from a few cultures in Nigeria and the rest of the world ,payment of dowry is at best a few items and some loose change.
There are quite a few countries in the world which charge the women.I think from the top of my head -India and lots of eastern european countries do this.
A few of them charge a hefty fee like some Nigerian tribes charge the men likewise.

I agree on this.In Nigeria the women tend mostly to go for the less time consuming fields to focus on the family.
The men on other hand pick more time consuming fields and try to keep up with their friends cars and lifestyle thus work much more.
Remember the current pay for medical doctors in the government hospitals are like  naira 140-230k or there about ,which by Nigerian standards is very good pay.
If you work in a good private setting in say Abuja you can make 1m naira (my uncle has such a job) a month.
So he has plenty of free time as the work is very undemanding and has money too.

US its a set period and you need to get signed off yearly so if you are lazy then you are finished.In Nigeria its totally book work which you write when you are ready unless you get kicked for been there way too long.
Thus you see many taking it easy in government hospitals.
But what make Nigerian doctors busy is the fact they tend to run around doing government work  + running a clinic on the side.
Try dating the ones in UK.They tend to be stuck in middle of program for ages due to the system there but then work less hours but the pay is still pretty good if nah money you want

I have to agree that NYSC really is a waste of time.When i did mine i found it totally pointless .
But 2 things it did.It gave me a cooling period before actually going into the cruel world and it helped me understand that the country system does not work .
Buying the certificate is so easy which makes me wonder why all those politicans have not got it under their desk and let their opponets use it against them.

Even if you pick a government job unless you are bringing in loads of money to suppliment ,then the woman will have to do outside clinic to make up.
