Clowns, the Tortoise and Babangida’s quest Owei Lakemfa Sep 8, 2010 Share | By Owei Lakemfa THERE will be legions of presidential candidates for next year’s election, but I bet that the most hilarious will be former military dictator, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. He already has in place, a band of chorus boys and unimaginative clowns with one Kassim Afegbua as lead vocalist. Afegbua said to be Babangida’s spokesman wrote an hilarious piece titled “The Questions Babangida Wants Discussed”. Reading it makes one question the type of minds that produce the outlandish claims of the former dictator’s alleged success in government. Let us take the issue of Abuja for instance. The committee that recommended it as the new capital of the country was set up by General Murtala Ramat Mohammed and was accepted by General Olusegun Obasanjo. The building commenced soon afterwards, especially under Alhaji Shehu Shagari and it remains a city in progress. But Afegbua wants Nigerians to believe that “it was IBB who brought us here (Abuja)” Under Shagari, Abuja was already being put to use, but Babangida suddenly moved the capital to Abuja not because it was completed or he was visionary, but following the April 22, 1990 Gideon Orkar coup attempt in which he almost lost his life; a fearful Babangida ran to Abuja to hide under the Aso Rock and barricade himself. In the process, civil servants were literally frog-jumped to Abuja under appalling conditions resulting in many broken marriages. Due to Babangida’s disorderly retreat to Abuja, accommodation was mainly not available for the public servants forced to relocate and many had to live in their offices, this also led to the evil ‘Abuja marriage’ phenomenon. Is this the type of “success” story a serious-minded person would peddle as a campaign material? Afegbua’s primary aim in the article was to justify his principal’s paranoia for probing questions like who bombed enterprising journalist, Dele Giwa and why the sly ex-General annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola? Now, despite his claims to high intelligence, Babangida has been unable in the past 17 years to give a simple or straight forward answer to why the election was annulled. In taking precious newspaper space on this issue, you would have expected a supposed spokesman to answer this question; rather Afegbua exhibited a baffling denseness. He said the journalists who ask Babangida such simple and historically correct questions are “being lazy scholars”. Yet his claimed ‘scholarship’ did not in any way attempt an answer, rather he makes the bizarre submission that “rather than condemn in such wholesale manner the annulment, we should also be able to commend the man who made the election to be credible in the first place”. Were Babangida to be president next year(God forbid!) is this the type of answers we will get to serious national issues? What do you make of other incredible claims of the ‘megaphone’ such as that Babangida retired “from service to his fatherland” when we all know that in order to save the fatherland from the destructive clutches of Babangida, he was forced out of office and power. What about the delusionary claims that “IBB is today undoubtedly the father of modern Nigeria” and that he produced “well celebrated icons as Tony Elumelu, Jim Ovia and the Dangotes of today”? Babangida’s team celebrates his poverty-inducing Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP)as testimony of his ‘success’ in office! That is the IMF-imposed programme that destroyed local industries and wiped out factories, including in the textile and footwear sectors, grossly devalued the currency, destroyed the education system, sharply increased the prices of petroleum products while delivering darkness rather than electricity. Only adjusted minds will celebrate such tragedy. The World Bank distanced itself from IBB’s tragic economic policies while years back, the IMF apologised to humanity for imposing SAP on African countries. Is this what any serious presidential aspirant will celebrate? Perhaps he assumes that Nigerians are daft. If Babangida is allergic to questions on Dele Giwa’s murder and the annulment, can he explain why his regime grinded basic human rights into the dust? Why it banned viable professional and mass based organisations like the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) and criminalised any discourse opposed to his programmes such as SAP and his fake ‘Transition Programme’? Why is he silent on the massacre of pro- democracy protesters in 1993 and that of Ahmadu Bello University students, seven years earlier? Well, Babangida says he is focused on the future; he deceives gullible Igbo elites that if they campaign for him, he would spend only one term and hand over power to them in 2015. All such elites need do is ask themselves which of his numerous promises in office did Babangida fulfil? For instance, he promised to hand over power four times:1990, 1992, January 1993 and August 1993 and four times he failed to do so before his ouster. Today, he promises, Nigerians “true federalism”, state police, resource control and a corruption-free society. How can a man whose regime had corruption as an abiding state policy, promise to fight corruption? Well, he can start first by telling us where he got the billions of dollars in his possession and how much tax he paid on them. Babangida acknowledges the massive opposition against him but says there are also those who love him. This doubtlessly is true: Millions in Germany loved Adolf Hitler, legions loved Benito Mussolini in Italy, General Augusto Pinochet, the butcher in Chile and his counterparts like Idi Amin in Uganda and Mobutu Seseseko in Congo were not without supporters. The evil apartheid regime had its supporters in Pretoria, Washington and London, while the Biblical Satan has its followers. So there is nothing outstanding if Babangida has his own lovers. Babangida is like the tortoise who is embarking on a fruitless journey, and when asked: “Mr Tortoise, Mr Tortoise, Mr Tortoise, when are you coming back?” The Tortoise replied “Not until I have been disgraced, disgraced, not until I have been disgraced!” http://www.vanguardepaper.com/2010/09/08/clowns-the-tortoise-and-babangida%e2%80%99s-quest/ |
chyz:I wouldn't question the religion of the security officers, but what is certain is that an a security breach of incredible proportions; this was a jail break that released 700 prisoners! Heads must roll.
They should have taken those Boko-Haram prisoners away from Northern Nigeria Prisons or at least away from the Borno-Bauchi area. The proximity to their comrades could be too tempting for the miscreants. Did the courts try them before jailing them?
That makes a lot of sense. Since these sect have displayed a dangerous proclivity for violence and extremism, it would have been logical to jail them in states where there is no sympathy for either their behaviour or their sect. |
Breaking News: Boko Haram Organizes Prison Break In Bauchi Posted: September 7, 2010 - 21:31 By SaharaReporters, New York The religious sect known as Boko Haram this evening in Bauchi State demonstrated the porousness of Nigerian security by carrying off an audacious prison break and freeing over 700 people being held in the federal prison there. The prison is located in front of the palace of the Emir of Bauchi. Eye witnesses told Saharareporters that the group struck at about the time Muslims, including the Emir, were breaking their fast. The Emir quickly vacated his palace while soldiers and police were being drafted from the nearby city of Jos. The governor of the state, Isah Yuguda, is currently in Saudi Arabia in observance of Hajj. This is the third time in three days that the sect, which began an uprising in Bauchi last year, would strike. As Sahareporters reported yesterday, Boko Haram militants have also killed district heads and a retired police officer in Maiduguri near the palace of the Shehu of Borno. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/breaking-news-boko-haram-organizes-prison-break-bauchi |
Suspected Islamists attack prison in Nigeria: authorities (AFP) – 2 hours ago KANO, Nigeria — Suspected members of an Islamist sect that launched an uprising last year attacked a prison in northern Nigeria on Tuesday, officials said, sparking a fierce gun battle with authorities. Authorities in Bauchi said they repelled the attack, which followed a spate of recent shootings blamed on the sect. Residents said that military and police were occasionally firing into the air as they locked the area down. "There was heavy fighting between the attackers and the security forces which lasted for almost an hour. It was quite terrifying," resident Usman Ahmad told AFP by phone. Residents took cover to avoid being caught in the crossfire and to keep from being mistaken for one of the sect members, he said. "The army and police personnel have been deployed in large numbers and have taken control of the area around the prison," Ahmad said. "But for sporadic shooting in the air by the army and the police, it's calm. Fighting has stopped." Bauchi state police commissioner Danlami Yar'Adua and an adviser to the state governor confirmed the attack, with both saying the situation had been brought under control. Neither said whether anyone was killed or if prisoners had escaped. It was also unclear how many alleged sect members were involved. "The Bauchi central prison was attacked this evening by people believed to be members of Boko Haram in an attempt to free their comrades," Bauchi state police commissioner Danlami Yar'Adua said, referring to the name of the sect. "They arrived at the prison and began shooting sporadically to gain access, but we deployed our anti-riot policemen, who engaged them and contained the situation." Police have been among the victims of the recent deadly shootings in northern Nigeria blamed on members of the sect. At least nine people have been killed by motorcycle-riding gunmen. Last year's uprising by Boko Haram, also known as the Nigerian Taliban, began with attacks on police posts. It was crushed by a police and military assault, with hundreds eventually killed and the sect's headquarters and mosque left in ruins. Its leader, Mohammed Yusuf, was captured alive and then killed on July 30 last year by police, who said he was trying to escape. Police also insist that Yusuf's deputy, Abubakar Shekau, was killed last year, though he recently appeared on video issuing new threats. Police say the clips are digital mock-ups. At the time of the one-year anniversary of the uprising in July, authorities in Maiduguri, where the sect was based, insisted there was no threat of attacks, but security was tightened and intelligence agents blanketed the city. The recent shootings had signaled the sect may be preparing to strike again in Africa's most populous nation. Most of the shootings occurred in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, where authorities earlier Tuesday banned the use of motorcycles at night in a bid to stop the violence. Tuesday's attack comes just before the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and ahead of January presidential elections. Boko Haram, which means "Western education is sin" in local Hausa dialect, had fought for the creation of an Islamic state in Nigeria, whose 150 million population is divided roughly in half between Christians and Muslims. Nigeria's north is mainly Muslim, while the south is predominately Christian. The vast majority of Muslims in the country reject the sect's hardline ideology, and many observers say the group grew out of frustration with Nigeria's widespread corruption, poverty and lack of opportunities for youths. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5i47w4QUoZbMAQaYX03nIL2ws_PNg www.nairaland.com/attachments/317658_Bauchi_jpgf863c7b146d5632d232e46ce193139c5 |

Esedendo:It is only on Nigerian forums you can find such rubbish. On what forum anywhere in the World have you seen texting used as everyday English? It is absolutely disgusting when people transfer it from their phones to the Internet, again the only place I have seen such done, is on Nigerian forums and it makes my heart sink about what inquisitive foreigners would think. Texting is primarily for teenage mobile phone use, when it is used in any other way, people quickly draw negative conclusions on the writers intelligence or sense of responsibility. To make matters worse, someone speaking that way has the gall to challenge a woman who at least made a genuine effort. Its like an area boy or almajiri challenging a banker about economics. |

^ Good one! It was actually 54 suitcases of raw cash, not 28 bags. |
otokx:It has been. Its; So, Durojaye went to the First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Ibadan Poly 4 branch, with the intention of cashing N2,000.Thing is, are our police capable of investigating this? Or will they just collect roger as usual? |
igbo boy:He was only being sarcastic about denials that GEJ might be Igbo. I guess if either of both clowns, Aitiku or IBB make it to the Presidency in 2011, the fools will argue in 2015 that we have already had an Igbo President and any denials here or anywhere won't count. I would suggest the Igbo's fully support GEJ now, but with strong demands like a request for true federalism. Thats really what we all need. |
babasoty:Well said. Poor governers, they were very quick to demand emergency development funds for their states as the only way they would contribute to stabilising the country during the Yar Adua saga. They actually signed the dotted line and named the projects they wanted to build. . .Now that GEJ wants an account, some of the corrupt ones are making crude noises about the EFCC victimising them. Only criminals fear the EFCC. The good news is that some govs will be finishing their tenors early next year, so their immunity is in countdown mode. GEJ should start preparing choice spots for any theives in Kirikiri, Gashua and Ita Oko. |
First Bank of Nigeria Plc. . . If this is true, na wa! Whoever heard of ghost bank balances? The receipts might have been destroyed, but the electronic traces will still remain in one form or the other, but 9ja no de do forensics. ![]() |

Kobojunkie:Dude you better cool down, if you had taken my harmless post for what it was, your shortcoming would have gone unnoticed. . . But you had to be rude to try to cover up, so take the result on the chin and stop the senseless bellyaching, especially when what you said is there in black and white for all to see. I will repeat; server location has no bearing on a websites security. Period. ![]() |
The combination you are suggesting is not practical. In Nigeria, the VP position is largely ceremonial, which nullifies the Fashola half of the ticket and might squash his future presidential ambitions. Why serve as a figurehead when he can be boss? Why not have Fashola as the Presidential candidate with Buhari as Deputy? 7, From past experience, Buhari is known to give his deputy free hands(remember Idi-Agbon). With a proven administrator per excellence as Fashola as vice, we expect great works. Imagine a Fashola as a working, not a figure-head, Vice President. Imagine the transformation of Nigeria. Imagine the wonders. There are strong rumours that Idiagbon carried out the coup that brought them to power, but as a titular Yoruba man sought out the nearest Hausa-Fulani he could find, in order to be acceptable to the military establishment of that period whose officer ranks were overwhelmingly skewed in favour of the Hausa - Fulani. By this argument, Buhari was a figurehead who had no real alternative, but to conside to the real power, Idiagbon. 6, Buhari is widely believed to be a solution to the cankerworm called corruption in Nigeria. Almost every Nigerian agrees to his disciplined stance on corruption. he is perhaps the only living past Nigerian leader that doesn't have a corruption question dangling on his neck. If corruption, is fought head-on, and the mindset of the populace changes, then many other things will fall in place. . .Very strongly disputed! Buhari has a very serious corruption question dangling from his neck. 2.8 billion US Dollars went missing under his watch at the NNPC. That question remains unanswered, in fact it is said to be the lever Idiagbon had over him. This is another (arguably more informed) take on the matter by Naiwu Osahon; Naiwu Osahon: Babangida first came into serious political reckoning with Buhari's misleading coup of December 31st 1983. In reality, power was seized for the opportunity to destroy documents relating to the NNPC's missing USA$2.8 billion oil money, and punish all those involved in the unraveling of the scam. Politicians and critics, including Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, notorious for clamouring for the exposure of the oil money rogue Minister of an earlier military epoch, were locked up without trial.Taken from Naiwu Osahon's book, The Viper's Den. |
Kobojunkie:Of course it is lost on you that you actually mentioned locating the server outside Nigeria as a way of protecting against hacking. Lets remind you again. . . Kobojunkie:You were caught talking crap and thats why you reacted very rudely. You have clearly claimed that websites hosted in Nigeria are more prone to hacking (which is patently false); it simply doesn't matter where a website is hosted. |

EFCC discovers Rivers State’s officials’ hideout By Elor Nkereuwem Some government officials in Rivers State, who have been declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), have taken shelter in a hotel, Eddytims Hotel, in the Mile 4 area of the capital city, Port Harcourt, officials of the agency said. As at press time yesterday, EFCC operatives were still in the process of invading the hotel to arrest the officials who are alleged to have been part of a scheme to divert local government funds to the tune of N12 billion. EFCC operatives, who spoke in confidence with NEXT, said that while a large number of the indicted officials have fled the state, some had been holed in the hotel for some days now to avoid being arrested. “The hotel is owned by one Timothy Nwosirim. He is the chairman of Obiakpor local government area and he is one of the officials that the EFCC is looking for,” the EFCC official said yesterday. Protected by government While the state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, claims that the EFCC operations is a witch hunt and an abuse of court processes, some reports say the EFCC has accused the governor of shielding the indicted officials. The EFCC said that the commission is not to blame for the leakage of the intelligence report which led to the escape of the indicted officials. Rather, the agency put the blame on the police and the state governor. “Rivers State is a volatile State so when operatives are going there, you must seek for support from the local police. The police commissioner must also inform the governor before he sends his men to support EFCC operations. So, between the Rivers State police and the state governor, those are the people who could have instructed the officials to flee,” our source said. Femi Babafemi, the spokesman of the EFCC, refused to comment on the case. “We are making progress in the case. That is all I am going to say about this,” Mr. Babafemi said in Abuja, yesterday. All efforts to get a response from the Rivers State government proved fruitless. The anti-graft agency says that it is currently on cases of financial crimes in virtually all the states in Nigeria. “Virtually all state governors in Nigeria siphon local government funds in collaboration with the local government chairmen,” an official of the agency said. “There is hardly any state in the country that officials are not indicted. We are taking them one after the other. We are currently in Kwara, Ogun, and Jigawa States,” he said. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5615483-146/efcc_discovers_rivers_states_officials_hideout.csp |
Kobojunkie:This is not true. practically all Nigerian websites have no concept of security, regardless of where they are hosted. At least 90% of them are vulnerable to XXS and SQL Injection attacks; and thats a function of poor coding, not where the server is located. The easiest way to have a laugh at the weekend is to write a few scripts and let your eyes pop out at how easy it is to download whole databases from 9ja websites, even worse are the unprofessional horrors they contain. About a year ago, the very same Sahara Reporters website would take several minutes to load on some computers; they just don't care. Same goes with most Nigerian companies and govt parastatals; they just don't give a damn about PR or presenting a professional face, talkless of ensuring that their websites are robust and locked down. This is the Supreme Court of Nigeria's "website" (very funny); http://www.scn.gov.ng/ Contrast with Ghana's Judicial Service, http://www.judicial.gov.gh/ The UK version http://www.supremecourt.gov.uk/ |
@Marvix Thanks. That was quite well delivered. |

Don't worry about stepping in next time when you know quite well your brain needs a wheel barrow to move it along, then getting all teary eyed and abusive when you can't counter anything in a logical argument.
at least thats an improvement from your previous ridiculous claim. try again and u will soon come nearer to the truth
If only you could comprehend, you wouldn't see anything different to what I have claimed through the thread, which is; the governors had every right to that money for their states. The excess crude account is illegal. . . .Funny, do I recall you making a single logical point? How is your childish personal abuse thread project going? IBB people = Foolish people. |
playmode:How pathetic! This is the typical behaviour of someone who has zero points in an argument, but feels they must "contribute" to be seen as clever. Raining abuse instead of logic is a sure sign of a low IQ and poor upbringing, its what we expect from low lifes. In Nigeria, the FG gives money to the states and that is what hapenned here. Do you have another argument? Or its just more of the gutter stuff? If you don't like the FG giving money to the states, the proper thing to do is fight for true federalism, not disgrace yourself as you are doing here. IBB people = Foolish people. |
playmode:What a childish post! All emotion and zero logic. IBB people = Foolish people. |
Gbawe:You got that so right! That is why EFCC is on those governors arses. ![]() Please shun your governor if you can't see any evidence of the money performing in your state. |
mistakay:Have you seen the govt stoop so low to deny what is written in the gutter press? Abeg, that is too funny. Left to Daily Trust, you would think the country was at war and the North was getting erased. Rubbish! Let them blab along with their tribalism and manufacturing of news; sensible people will ignore it. |
mikeansy:Did you actually try google? Because the internet is crawling with enough legal documents from lawyers on the matter. You might wish to create your own interpretation, but you will only be wrestling with a rock. I don't want to waste my time arguing about things that legal experts have concluded about, over and over. Use google and educate yourself on this matter.
