If it is true the Oba said that, it means he is drunk on Apeteshi. Why should I listen to morden day Oba's when it is clear some of them don't know their left from their right, the history of Oduduwa's and the Yoruba's is greater than any of those Naira seeking royals. Today even a LG Goverment chairman according to goverment hirachical arrangements are above Oba's.

Taking pronoucement from today's obas should be taking with a grain of salt,  and any irresponsible yearnings by the so called royal father's should be validated.

In the not too past an Oba was fighting in broad day light, an antics a drunking under graduate would not indulge in, are these the people you hold their every word with a kind of reverence as something one should be proud off, it is clear you are a worse simpleton than those illetrate oba's.
You should listen to him cos he's a Bini man and he knows it. Take this example of a prince running "home", back to Benin;

It is also important to note that the Obaship of Lagos has a lot of Benin influence. Up to the 1920s, the ruler of Lagos (Eko) was referred to as ELEKO.

This link with Benin is confirmed with the building of a mosque by Olojo, the second son of King Kosoko opposite the Oba market. Olojo Kosoko arrived in Benin while fleeing from British agents when his father Oba Kosoko lost to Oba Akintoye and Madam Tinubu.
A piece of land was given to him where he built his house but later converted it to a mosque, because he was a Muslim. That mosque is still standing at the beginning of Lagos Street in Benin City, opposite the Oba Market. That street was named LAGOS STREET because of Olojo Kosoko, the Edo/Eko man who came back home. His descendants in Benin today simply go by the name OLOJOs and the OLOKEs without the Kosoko attached.

It clearly states that both people had historical ties but are different people. Oranmiyan's mother must be Yoruba according to this. He ruled Bini when his father couldn't rule cause of old age. That is how the inter tribal relationship began. Two cultures interacting!! It clearly states that the Binis accepted Yoruba gods and Yorubas accepted their administrative systems. So you see?
A much better argument from you.

Edo history is extremely detailed and they can give exact dates that go back two thousand years . The site you quoted from has oodles of good stuff on it; I encourage you to use it. Another very useful site is waado.org.

Shut up. Why can't the Binis accept they are Yorubas? It goes both ways and you can't support one. The Lagos govt article you posted clearly states it that Yorubas were living in Lagos before the arrival of the Binis or can't you comprehend? Are you nuts or what? The Aworis who are Yorubas have been living in Lagos long before the arrival of Bini king's expedition. I'm starting to think Bini people tried invading Lagos and not as the article stated saying Awori people liked Ado and ask him to be their leader. That's a fallacy to human's nature. Someone has been peddling with history!

By Shaka Momodu

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The controversy surrounding the correct historical background of the Yoruba race continued yesterday with the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu I agreeing with the Oba of Benin, Omo N'Oba Erediauwa that the Yoruba originated from Benin Kingdom.

Erediauwa had on page 205 of his autobiography, I Remain Sir, Your Obedient Servant launched in Lagos last week traced the history of Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba race to "one Ekaledehan, a Benin Prince who had once escaped the community's axe but later re-appeared in Ife after wandering in the bush from Benin for a very long time."

In a swift reaction, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade at the launch of the biography of Yeyeoba of Ife, Chief (Mrs) H.I.D. Awolowo on Monday in Lagos said Oduduwa had no link with the Ogiso dynasty in Benin history as claimed by Oba of Benin.

Adding his voice to the raging controversy, Oba Akiolu submitted that what the Oba of Benin said on Yoruba history was correct.

Akiolu, who spoke to newsmen, said Erediauwa could not be faulted on the history of the Yoruba.

According to him, Omo N'Oba is a man of integrity who could not lie on this matter.

Stick with "Igbos are Jews" Beaf and stop talking about Yoruba when I doubt you understand Yoruba cause if you do, you'll know all the names you mentioned were Yoruba. I don't care where Yoruba people come from. Ooni of Ife might not want to lose his place in Yoruba land and might not be wiling to accept Yorubas come from Benin. Do you know how much homage he will lose if he accepts that Yorubas are from Bini people? All that homage will be paid to Oba of Benin. Ask yourself why they have Oba in Benin and not another name for king? You are still a Dumbo. Lagos is a Yoruba land. It don't matter where the Yorubas come from.!!

From Lagos state govt (for the 2nd time)
Prior to the Portuguese name of Lagos being adopted, Lagos was originally called Eko, which stems from either Oko (Yoruba: "cassava farm"wink or Eko ("war camp"wink, by its Bini conquerors. History has it that the Oba of Bini sent various trade expeditions to Ghana where spices were traded and one of his traders complained about the way she was being treated by the Awori's. The Oba of Bini then sent a trade expedition by sea. Ironically, the leader of the expedition arrived in the evening at a time when the people who were predominantly fishermen were either wading into the water or getting into their boats to gather their catch. He declined to engage them further and returned to what is now called Benin City where he reported to the Oba of Bini that they were attacked. This prompted the Oba of Bini to constitute a war expedition led by Ado, a Bini Prince to go to Lagos and demand an explanation. This was over 650 years ago. However, on getting there, they were well received. The people were so enamored with Ado they asked him to stay and lead them. He agreed on the condition that they surrendered their sovereignty to the Oba of Bini to which they agreed. The Oba of Bini was told this and he gave his permission for the expedition to remain. The Oba of Bini later sent some of his chiefs including the Eletu Odibo, Obanikoro and others to assist Ado in the running of Eko. Till today, the Oba of Lagos is the head of all the Kings in Lagos State and his status is different from other Oba's most of whom were later given back their crowns and staff of office only within the last 40 years and have various classifications. Suffice it to state that those who got their crowns back were the original land owners. These were Olofin's children. Moreover, modern day Lagosians have so intermingled that no single tribe or people can claim it even though the predominant language is Yoruba. The present day Lagos state has a higher percent of this sub-group who allegedly migrated to the area from Isheri along the Ogun river.

History has it that there are only two ruling houses in Lagos namely Akinsemoyin and Ologun Kutere. The first Oba of Lagos was Ado, the son of Prince Ashipa (Esikpa) of Benin. Ado had three children, Gabbaro, Akinsemoyin and a female, Erelu Kuti. After the death of Ado, his eldest son, Gabbaro, succeeded him. Gabarro's line became extinct because he had no child. From Lagos Mega City Project

History of Lagos

One oral tradition states that Lagos was originally called Eko, which means "cassava farm", and that it was founded by a Benin royal family. The founding king was Ado. Ado's children were Gbaro, Akinsemoyin, and Erelu Kuti. Eko was the land area where the king's palace was built. The indigenous people settled down in the southern part of Eko called "Isale Eko", meaning "South Lagos".

Erelu Kuti's son was Ologun Kutere, who became king of Lagos, and Shokun his brother was given a Chieftaincy house behind the king's palace called "Onile-gbale" which means "land owner-sweeps your land". The Lagos monarchy is said to have started henceforth and the king's brother started his own chieftancy family behind the palace building.

However, there is another account of Lagos before 1603 that comes from a Western visitor. In 1603, Andreas Joshua Ulsheimer, a German surgeon, aboard a Dutch merchant ship, visited Lagos. According to his accounts, Lagos was a large frontier town surrounded by a strong fence and inhabited by "none but soldiers and four military commanders, who behave in a very stately manner."

The Lagos visited by Ulsheimer and his trading colleagues nearly four centuries ago was in many ways highly developed. Each day its four commanders came together as a court and each day two envoys were dispatched to take decisions back to their ruler in Benin. To do so, Ulsheimer wrote, was a common practice in all towns under the suzerainty of Benin. Food in Lagos was plentiful: handsome fish, good wildfowl", meat fruits, yams and a host of other foodstuffs. The town was by water and by land, and many traders who brought their wares by water and by land, and who conducted their transactions in cowries or trade goods, amongst which brass was highly prized. Ulsheimer was struck by the beautiful, colourful cloth, the ivory, elephant tails that were traded in Lagos, and by the large amount of pepper that was available.

Ulsheimer's accounts seem to confirm Benin oral traditions of conquest and occupation of Lagos during the sixteenth century. How Oba Orhogbua of Benin (1550-1578) occupied the island of Lagos, established a military camp there and from that base waged wars on some people described as rebels against his authority, in the immediate interior. Orhogbua, according to Benin traditions, left Lagos when he learnt of a coup against him at home. But he left behind in Lagos, a military camp under three generals. His son and successor, Ehengbuda (1578-1606) on his journey to Lagos, is said to have drowned in a river mid-way between Benin and Lagos, when his boat capsized.

Ulsheimer gives the first account, documenting the transformation of Lagos from fishing camp to a trading centre, and from an autonomous settlement to a Benin tributary. Lagos Lagoon was known to European traders by 1485, when it first appeared on maps, but the town of Lagos was not included.

Oral traditions indicate that Benin found pre-existing settlement on Lagos and nearby Ido Islands. Ulsheimer also confirmed this. Some of the inhabitants in the Lagos interior lived in towns walled for defensive purpose and Ulsheimer's group armed with two cannons helped the local Benin army to conquer and completely destroy one of such towns described as dissident.

Accordingly to some oral traditions, Benin forces settled at a strategic place on the northwest tip of Lagos Island where they could easily mount a defensive garrison and still overlook the lagoon which narrows suddenly at this point between Lagos and Ido Island.

The Ogun was an important waterway leading to inland trade. The large number of colonies established by Benin throughout the Ogun basin (west from Lagos to Badagry, and north from the coast to (latter-day) Ilaro Division boundaries, attests to its interest. Ido was surrounded by water and given the palisades Ulsheimer found around Lagos, it was quite likely that Ido was also fortified against Benin invaders. Whether Benin was initially unwilling or unable to take Ido is unclear. Certainly it did so later, for its refugees founded a new settlement nearby, especially along the southern side of the lagoon in today's Eti-Osa. In contrast to Ido, Benin established a firm base across the lagoon on Lagos Island with little resistance. At the time, Lagos Island had one known settlement, founded by the legendary Aromire, "lover of water", as a fishing camp.

Take the time & read the article you yourself quoted. The Aworis were there already.

Your argument is just like saying the British founded Nigeria 'cos Lugard named it Nigeria.
You take time to read, cos it says, all they had was a pepper farm and a couple of fishing posts. All Oba's of Lagos are descendants of the Oba of Benin, there is no Awori.

You see how dumb and silly you are? Oba Ashipa was before Oba Ado. tribalist fool. Go and die. I won't argue with you again. Is Ashipa a Yoruba name? To the Yorubas here who speak fluently. Help me out on that. Is Ashipa a Yoruba name? Also, Are Bnin people descendants of Oduduwa? Is Oba a Yoruba term for king?

Beaf go and die!!!
Being a tribalist, blocks your senses. Your state govt has already told you that Oba Ado was your first king, its only a couple of posts above. cry cry cry
I'm a patient teacher, just here to teach, teach, teach; so I'll let others tell you as well;

Therefore, upon his death, Akinsemoyin, his younger brother took ove

You forgot to mention where it says Eko comprise of the island alone and that there were Yoruba tribes already living on the mainland. How is that hard for you to understand? You know where Island is right? Jump into a lagoon fool.
You're sooooooooooooooooooooo funny! grin grin grin
A few posts ago, you claimed "even Bini people wouldn't say they found Lagos", but now your very own govt is telling you!

Until the coming of the Bini's, Lagos's geographic boundary was what is known now as Lagos Mainland. Lagos Island, the seat of the Oba of Lagos then consisted of a pepper farm and fishing posts. No one lived there though. The name Eko was given to it by its first King Oba Ado during its early history, it also saw periods of rule by the Kingdom of Benin.[1] Eko was the land area now known as Lagos Island where the king's palace was built. The Palace is called Iga Idunganran which, translated means Palace built on the pepper farm. Oba Ado and the warriors from Benin as well as some of the indigenous people who sought safety settled down in the southern part of Eko called "Isale Eko", Isale literarily meaning bottom, but must have been used to indicate downtown (as in Downtown Lagos).
You will recall of course, that Oba Ado was the Benin prince sent to found Lagos.
Try to sharpen up a bit, because even tough I've dedicated time to schooling tribalists to change their ways for free, you guys still have to display some aptitude.

9jaganja: Even Bini people wouldn't say they found Lagos! Why are you guys so obsessed with Lagos and Lagos is not Yoruba land fantasies? Does it hurt you guys so much that one of the most developed state in Nigeria is Yoruba? Just let it go. Egun people are not Yoruba fine they are Iggbos and Igbos are are why Lagos is booming and Lagos is their native land. Is that what you want to hear? Ok you got it kiddo now bounce.!!
Really?

Lagos State Government: Prior to the Portuguese name of Lagos being adopted, Lagos was originally called Eko, which stems from either Oko (Yoruba: "cassava farm"wink or Eko ("war camp"wink, by its Bini conquerors. The present day Lagos state has a higher percent of this sub-group who allegedly migrated to the area from Isheri along the Ogun river

The funniest thing about tribalists is, they don't even know their own history.

First beaf you are incorrigble!!! S!hit for brain!! So because I'm arguing with you about my tribe makes me tribalist? Where did I say anything tribalist on this thread?

Yes Language is not just what makes you Yoruba. But Beaf was using language as a proof so I told him even at his stupidity, their are still similarities. And language wasn't all I used was it? their native religion and history was posted here too,  I don't know why Beaf is so egotistical and can't admit he made a false statement. I can guarantee his ego is on steroids and milk shake. And you chyz, I noticed you always try to post something to counter my argument whether strong or not you just say  what you think you can use to make me look dumb. It's alright though as long as I can defend my self and you don't call me tribalist for just debating you.

I said you can not use Language alone to measure who is Yoruba or not. I use language and historical ties. Beaf was just being a "beaf" that sees more fingers than it sees vulva!! This was what I used. Was that only Language? I'm not saying Bini are "Yoruba"; Yoruba is suppose to be a name for people with historical ties not by "Yoruba" speakers only Listen to Ijesha man speak and you will know why I said Language isn't a factor though their are similarities. Like the Ewe Yoruba one highlighted below,

It must be hard for beaf to understand. He will start calling me a tribalist. I dare you to pull out any post i made to insult your people on this thread. Why would you call me a tribalist just for not agreeing with you? So it's because you are Igbo that's why Egun people are not historically, religiously and even linguistically tied to Yorubas? You are a slowpoke!

Even Bini people wouldn't say they found Lagos!
You are such a cry baby. When you claim that a distinct ethnic minority does not exist, but is a sub group of yours, you become a tribal chauvinist, tribal supremacist. . .A TRIBALIST.
You even claimed to understand Egun from the Yoruba you speak. . . You claimed that your Egun friend speaks Yoruba to you and that made him Yoruba. . . That was until I posted two videos with the language Eguns speak and it suddenly changed. It is Yoruba, so translate it na! grin grin grin grin

Olodo!

You will learn a lot in my FREE anti-tribalist school, because I am ready to teach, teach, teach. grin
So, lets move on to the fact that Bini people founded Lagos. Who knows? You could even be a lil Bini boy! grin grin grin grin grin
Laughter will kill me today o! Tribalists are funny and foolish people.
