naijaking1:Yes, it is refreshing to have someone with proper financial sense in oversight of the financial scene. The way our CBN boss invokes okija and looks elsewhere to the setting aside of 500 billion for some generator business, while our neglected banks have been hemorrhaging depositors to Ghana's advantage, is extremely worrying. Now some degree of commonsense should prevail; perhaps, we will even see the back of the financial marabout, Sanusi. |

Nigerian leader to keep power portfolio for now Tue Apr 6, 2010 7:04pm BST ABUJA, April 6 (Reuters) - Nigeria's Acting President Goodluck Jonathan will take charge of the power ministry and not appoint a minister for now, a spokesman said on Tuesday. "The purpose (of the decision) is to achieve the set targets in the power sector by the administration," said presidency spokesman Ima Niboro. Poor Dora haters and cabal lovers, Jonathan gave them a black eye! This is soooooooooooo funny! ![]() |
davidylan:. . .Only because he is a tribal jingoist and religious bigot. An educated almajiri. |
Why is that not surprising! ![]()
|
Now he can go to jail with Lukman in tow. The bastards, NNPC cannot even be audited; anybody trying wouldn't even know where to start. What sort of country is it that can't put a figure to the number of barrels extracted and exported? People have just been stealing us blind, filling their own ships with crude outside of the system. |
davidylan:Don't mind them, the man is a tribalist id!ot. |
. . .Today, a section of this country is being cheated, that is the North and the Muslim. . .Sickening. I am quite tired of these tribal baboons; "The North this", "the North that", "Muslims this", "Muslims that". It is in the name of this mythical "North" that Nigeria was driven to the edge of the precipice from which we have not fully returned. These goons should shove it! You can't eat your cake and have it. The Northern powers that be created this situation out of their selfish tribalism and religous bigotry, let them reap the fruit of the seed they have sown. Rubbish. They can form their own country peacefully or cooperate with the rest of us or lose all. |

Goldman Sachs' Aganga Named Nigerian Finance Minister (Update2) Monday, April 5, 2010 ©2010 Bloomberg News By Paul Okolo and Dulue Mbachu April 6 (Bloomberg) -- Olusegun Aganga, a managing director at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., was today named as finance minister of Nigeria, Africa's largest oil producer and most populous nation. Aganga, who has degrees from the University of Oxford and the University of Ibadan, will head a team that will brief acting President Goodluck Jonathan every two weeks on the state of the economy, Jonathan said at a swearing-in ceremony in the capital, Abuja. The team "must help to fast-track the process of our development as this is the most important task in the life of our nation," Jonathan said. "Our present and our future depend on it." Jonathan, 52, named his entire 42-member Cabinet today, replacing many of the ministers he dismissed two weeks ago. He dissolved the former Cabinet on March 17, five weeks after taking over from President Umaru Yar'Adua, who hasn't been seen in public since traveling to Saudi Arabia on Nov. 23 for medical treatment. He has since returned to Nigeria. The former mines minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, was named as the new petroleum minister. Nigeria is the fifth- biggest source of U.S. oil imports. 'Comparative Advantage' Aganga is a qualified accountant and worked for Ernst & Young LLP before joining Goldman Sachs in London in 2001, where he started at the European brokerage division. He was promoted to managing director, the second-highest rank in the company, in 2003. With Nigeria planning a eurobond sale in a few months, "his professional profile could to some extent be a comparative advantage," said Samir Gadio, Vice President at Rencap Securities in Lagos, a unit of Moscow-based Renaissance. "His appointment may be positively perceived by international investors and global markets for the same set of reasons." Aganga will have to help push ahead with policies that have been delayed by Yar'Adua's absence, including an end to fuel subsidies and the implementation of the budget, which wasn't approved until March 25. Nigeria, which has a population of about 150 million, has a budget of 4.6 trillion naira ($30.7 billion) for fiscal 2010. The government is spending on roads, bridges, houses, schools and power plants in a bid to improve the country's infrastructure. Prayers The budget was delayed in part because Yar'Adua never formally transferred authority to Jonathan, his deputy. That prompted parliament to proclaim Jonathan as acting president on Feb. 9 to end a power vacuum that left key decisions pending. "While we continue to pray for the speedy recovery of the President, permit me to emphasize the policy continuum of governance and to insist on the imperative of this team to roll up its sleeves, and to redouble efforts so as to meet the expectations of our people who are yearning for good governance," Jonathan said today. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2010/04/05/bloomberg1376-L0GOYE0UQVI9-1.DTL&type=printable |
I would have loved Chris Ogiemwinyi as petroleum minister. The choice of Aganga as finance minister is most welcome. Now that there's a high flier manning the show, Sanusi's rusty butt is bound to get kicked. ![]() |
chidichris:Lets calm down and see. He has just sworn in his own cabinet today, so work begins now. Everyone is witness to the fact that the poor man has been wrestling with demons, winshes and other principalities. So far he has always qiuetly and assuredly come tops. Lets wait and see, I am beginning to believe that for the first time we have someone who will put the country on the right footing. Whereas Yar'Adua spent his time dodging UN meetings, Jonathan has impressed internationally in a very short space of time. Most Nigerians do not realise have far we have come in a very short space of time (from when elements of the army dared him to sit in the Presidents chair after smuggling in Yar'Adua in the dead of night). There were even strong rumours in the heat of the cabals war against Nigerians that the US was a hairs breadth away from stepping in militarily (they have denied it), the World was very worried about an unstable Nigeria, but Jonathan has come in, is arranging things quietly and surely and calming the place down like ice water. That dude is good. |
Sky Blue:You wicked o! ![]() That would be well deserved. What about Aondoakaa? I think for that one, they should just set dogs on him. |
Sky Blue:The man has vanished isn't it? I hope EFCC have got Interpol on his tail. |
^ With the swearing in today, he will finally have the momentum he needs to move with giant strides (like you, I hope he uses it). There is little point in him wasting his energy fighting "I saw Yar Adua" wars with Turai et al. |
Sun of god:Calm down. The dude has his own quiet way of operating. E.g. Ministers were due to be sworn in at 12.00pm today, but still we don't know their positions; Jonathan is well coded. |
There is nothing special about Jonathan's gestures. All the people, including the leadership of the NASS, who knew the true nature of Yar'Adua's ailments never had any intentions of disgracing him from office through impeachment, otherwise impeachment proceedings would have been instituted long ago. It suffices to say that GJ will not be the PDP candidate in 2011 because of the unwritten agreement of power sharing. Anyone who believes that the agreement will be revoked to allow GJ to run in 2011 is delusional The best we can hope for is the postponement of the elections to 2012 or even early 2013, to allow time for proper electoral reforms and needed constitutional reforms to take place. In the maintime, one would expect Yar'Adua to be taken to the USA for further treatment given the cozy relationship we now have with the US government.
PDP will not see 2011 in its present shape, if at all. ![]() As for the postponement of elections, I mentioned it long ago that 2011 is not possible, mostly because the country is too unstable right now. |

marvix:Jonathan has displayed very admirable leadership qualities in the face of immense difficulties. If he runs in 2011, I'll be ready to pitch in more than just my vote. |
Mpele:. . .but is there a way those boys can be freed immediately and decorated as heroes? I agree with you. . . Just wait until after the World Cup though. ![]() |
I believe this must be the last length of rope given to Turai. If she doesn't accept, it must be gloves off! Jonathan has displayed immense maturity and steadfastness in in the face of the cabals antics. |
Jonathan Moves to Save Yar'Adua Daniel Idonor 6 April 2010 Abuja — THERE were strong indications that despite the fury caused by the controversial meeting between the ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua and some Islamic clerics, Acting President Goodluck Jonathan who is yet to see Yar'Adua, has no plan to disgrace Yar'Adua from office. Vanguard can authoritatively reveal that the meeting which allegedly held, Thursday, was interpreted as spiteful on the Acting President. Facts emerged, yesterday, that there was pressure on Jonathan to speedily constitute the cabinet to pass a resolution that President Yar'Adua was incapacitated. Such a resolution would, expectedly, ignite the process of Yar'Adua's removal from office by the National Assembly. But rather than succumb to the pressure, said to be coming from politicians of Northern extraction, it was gathered that Jonathan has begun moves aimed at saving Yar'Adua from the public embarrassment of impeachment. Further treatment for Yar'Adua One of such moves, Vanguard was told, is for Jonathan to persuade the first family to allow the ailing President undertake further medical treatment abroad; as Jonathan might have actually approved the treatment of President Yar'Adua in yet to be named country. Vanguard was told by a returning minister that contrary to report of a possible impeachment moves against the ailing President; Jonathan was not working to undermine President Yar'Adua in any way. The source which preferred anonymity, said the so-called cabal which wanted Yar'Adua to remain in office despite his ill-health, was largely misunderstood over its position, which was for a soft landing for Yar'Adua that will allow him time to recover and then resign honourably. The source said: "There was no time that Jonathan wanted Yar'Adua impeached or removed from office, ignominiously. No. The Acting President had always insisted that President Yar'Adua must not be disgraced and that was also our position. "So many Nigerians did not know what was going on. They felt that some of us were just there insisting that Yar'Adua must remain as President despite his state of health. Nobody ever clamoured for that position. What we said was that the man has not done anything to deserve being disgraced and I think that was fair enough on our part." The minister-designate said it was very disturbing when many people believed the rumours that some close associates of Yar'Adua were working against the interests of the whole country by insisting that the ailing president must remain in power. He noted: "What we did was to say no you can't just push the man aside, rather let's look for a soft landing for him, but so many people felt we wanted the man to remain in power despite his ill health. We know that the man is sick and we never wanted him to remain there just like that. "What we were trying to do before the cabinet was dissolved was to agree on where the man would go to receive proper treatment and when he gets a little better he can resign. That was the premise we were working on before the cabinet was sacked." http://allafrica.com/stories/printable/201004060083.html |
