tearoses: This always happens on threads like this
The us vs them which is a shame cos we spend so much talking but nothing gets done
I think that the truth should continue to be said and I speak from experience. Not everyone can start law suits and be on ground but every little helps.
We all have relatives in Nigeria and many of us were brought up in Nigeria and Nigeria still remains our identity and our roots before anywhere else.
Some Govt officials do take on board what's happening and try to effect change where possible. That I know first hand. Its just that omi po ju oka lo (the water is more than the yam flour)
It was on this NL that I came when some rouge govt officials extorted money from me & with no receipt. We received a call from one of the SA's to the governor the same day the post hit fp. He was livid that they were bringing the name of his gov to disrepute. in the meantime the govt officials were also calling and begging me to come and collect my money. They even wanted to buy me credit so I could call the SA and beg on their behalf. I'm almost certain that this wont happen again and those particular govt officials will behave themselves henceforth and save other innocent people from going through this.
Please let us say the truth about how things are and the issues that Nigerians are facing. Little drops of water make a mighty ocean. The patriotism and and the love for a better country makes me cry out at all the injustice and the wrong that I see.
People say that if you have money you will enjoy..... Unless you will put on dark glasses and not see all the beggars and kid hawkers on the road and not see things like that poor 2 year old abandoned witch boy, 5 kids on an okada on the way to school and not be moved by all that, then you can enjoy Nigeria.
Unless we fly from Ikeja to island and dont loose our wheels in muddy filled potholes after rainfall then we can enjoy Unless we dont have hungry and poor extended relatives then we can enjoy. I dont see any enjoyment when our own fellow human beings are suffering who just by luck are on the outside of our air conditioned jeeps. Now dats common sense. Exactly the point I have been trying to make, but thru no fault of their own people have become desensitised to the sufferings of their fellow human beings. And life has become a culture of me, myself and I. As for the government official issue u went thru, well if it was now , nothing wud very happened be cos there won't be any chance of it getting to front page, unless u manage to include a pix of some celebrity taking a poo in their toilet. Start from Sunday check all the front page news, and ask urself, which of these are supposed to help make life better for us and our fellow citizens. |

An0nimus: I respect you a lot (and still do) but was highly disappointed at this question. Hard to even come up with a reason why it was asked.
No, Nigerians are not savages. We have not fallen to the level you innocently asked of above. Nigerians will not stand aside and take pictures of children bleeding to death. I won't, my family won't, my friends won't.
Hope this answers your question. Bro calm down, no be fight. We won't watch a child bleed, but we will watch a child slowly die of neglect and hunger on the road side. We won't watch a child die, some Nigerian kidnap pregnant women, reap the child from their wombs and pound it as charms?? Terrible things are happening, the moment we start to accept that there are terrible pple among us, dats wen we can start to ask how do we get rid of them. |

Timbuktou: 1. People dont have to come out and say blatantly that theyre better than Nigeria, the inference can drawn from comments on this thread. I cannot move back because of such and such. The country is this and that. Let's not argue semantics here. No time. If moving back is beneath you, then it would mean you considers yourself too good to move back.
2. Anybody being born or growing up abroad is quite irrelevant to my post. If you haven't attempted to fix the problem, you've got no moral right to turn up your noses at those trying to or even those who feel hopeless and are "managing" the situation. If you grew up outside, perhaps the rest of us can share and benefit feom your lifelong experience, no? Otherwise, zip it and stop trying to scare people who are considering moving back. And of course, I have every right to take it personal when people are talking out of their arsès.
3. Out of point again, did I flay migrating and helping out family? Please, read my post again.
4. How could I possibly blame them? After all, Americans developed Australia and Germans developed France. Let's be just a wee bit patient, Ghanaians are going to come help us solve our shìt in a few months. Then instead of nostalgia and reminiscences, yall can just move back to the new, improved fatherLand.

armyofone: That country is not progressing. You wouldn't recognize a place after only mere two years of leaving that place. A small manageable good road you used to know would be all covered up in mud and pot holes large enough to swallow target trucks and caterpillars Common Lagos Ibadan express way no one could work on to make it two well made lanes. one step forward ten steps backward with Nigeria. Ummmmm dreaming of the day when we will have Texas/CA style roads/freeways in Nigeria until then, not yet uhuru. tearoses: And this is one of the reasons why I will find it hard Even when you try and help, you are told off and are told scary stories from Nigerians themselves
There is so much suffering and so many hard hearted people you can always tell the house helps in church on Sunday, very shabbily dressed while madam dresses well. They carry madams baby on the back while madam walks in front with her handbag
I love Nigeria but I just wish the people were more kind hearted. Kind hearted where? Until u live outside our shores u probably won't see wats wrong with our people. If a white person gives birth to a disabled child, or loses a child thru accident or any other means, listen to them talk about wat happened, eventually u will here them say we are doing this or that so no other person has to go thru the pain we are going thru now. Some will start to fund raise, build something or do something for their community to celebrate the kids life. Dats how a lot of charities and organisations have come day now help people that are in difficultits. Reverse to our pple, the parents will first start swearing and laying curses on the imaginary forces that killed their child. Then depending on wat they think will act faster they start going to native doctor or false prophets to assert revenge on anyone who they think caused demand dat pain. E go hard for things to change, our mind set is too perverse to effect change. |

cococandy: You're so funny. Who wouldn't miss their home? Or want to interact with people from their place? And who told you happiness is about where you live? Sometimes you can be happier at home but then it makes more economic sense for you to live elsewhere. Going there if it's a better standard of living doesn't automatically imply that one will be happier.
If someone points out something bad they wish was fixed in their country, does that mean they detest their country? So the better thing is to pretend like it doesn't happen so that one can be called patriotic I guess.
I know sha that's how this thread will turn out. Anyone who doesn't paint a glowing picture of the crumbling system will be made to look like they are bad even though what they are saying is true.
well I agree with you on adaptability. If you can adapt anywhere, you can be successfully resident there.
Unfortunately the only thing you can't adapt to is a life or death situation where no one is ready to render any help until you cough out money. As bad as 'the west' is, I don't see that happening to anyone. Emergency first before money talk. The biggest problem with our people is selfishness and self centredNess?? See me see grammar The fact that some pple here ate 3 meals today, can make them swear everyone else has. They know that there are pple out there who are desperately hungry, I mean proper hunger wey e be say eh ur big intestine go wan eat ur small intestine. But to some folk's it doesn't matter they have eaten big eba and use malt push am down, days all that counts all the others can go to blazes. |

Well, I am from there and I don't know any relatives doing this. If you were a guy, I know what I would have said, but I will let this one pass. Well am not saying all do, but Wat affect one shud affect all in this society it's the only way to go. U need to realise that because u have a gen and slept soundly last night , or because u have food and ate well last night doesn't mean everyone else did. U need to sit back and think, those beggars, those little kids selling pure water, that woman with that baby on her her back hawking bread, how do they feel? Where did they sleep, Wat did they eat? Then u will realise that calabar is no paradise for all. |

With all due respect to the departed, these kind of family brouhaha happens sometimes. It can happen anywhere in the world. Even in the USA and UK, there are deranged fellows who go on shooting spree, killing people just for fun.Crazy fellows are not limited to any particular geographic region of the world. Like someone said earlier in his post, adaptation is key. Besides, for the OP to have lived in Europe for 15 years, he/she might have become a citizen or at least have a valid resident permit. Also, he/she must have had some saved amount of money. So, its not like they will be starting from scratch financially. Not so much unresolved , they are the placid type. EfemenaXY: Police report or money?
I thought the in-thing these days is, no-money-no-treatment, even if the patient is at the point of death? Because it's gunshot wounds, the law is there have to be a police report incase the person is an armed robber. But no one remember that victims can also have gunshot wounds. And these laws were made by those dat were supposed to be the best of the best the society. See how smart they are? |

EfemenaXY: Lord have mercy.
Cococandy & Bebe2, question for you on the point made earlier on about people having no empathy, even for victims of road accidents. If children are involved, do people in Naija still stand aside, snapping pic and videoing them as they bleed to death?? Of course, it's the new trend. And the end of the day, even if they get the child to the hospital doctor will give one excuse or another why he can't treat the child. |
Family › Re: Advice For Relocating To Nigeria by bebe2(f): 10:55am On Feb 16, 2016 |
cococandy: I don't know who made that rule but it's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Always wondered what they were thinking every time one more person dies because the hospitals won't treat without a police report.
If the hospitals would be mandated not to release any treated gunshot victims without a police report, that would make more sense than demanding one before treatment. What's even the logic behind that?
Who has time in the face of such emergency to go get police report which by itself will take a lot of time. That's if the police don't demand money before issuing a report. Folk don't know how bad the country is, because pplease believe it's every man for himself. OK make I gist u one tori, A man was diagnosed with terminal cancer here , with all the " am an African man , I will not die in oyibo land" bravado he packed his things and went back to naija to die. We all cried, said our farewell . 4months later he is back, with horror stories, his people were duping him back n front everyone trying take Wat they can get. Medical care was zero, he was dying all they needed was strong pain killers to ease pain , but sometimes they buy real, sometimes it's fake. Once the morphine he brought from the UK was finished, hell started. Blood doctors cudnt even control his pain. Dats how he jeje packed his load back to the UK to have a peaceful death. |

tearoses: That is what I fear the most too Medical services Even when you are picked up to hospital there is no guarantee that you will be treated if there is no one who can pay. when I go I take shedloads of medical supply's with me cos you cant even be sure that the paracetamol you are buying is not fake.
Then followed by armed robbers high on igbo who even if you give them what they want will still shoot
Someone had his leg shot even after he had handed over everything after a car jacking. They said they will shoot him so that his wife will believe him that he was truly attacked by armed robbers and they did. He eventually lost the leg. just leg, Wat a lucky man, Have u heard of the young girl dat was shot by armed robbers in portharcout? She was rushed to the hospital but doctors but doctors refused to treat her because there was no police report. She bled to death right in the presence of her family. Dats how bad things are. |
Family › Re: Advice For Relocating To Nigeria by bebe2(f): 10:33am On Feb 16, 2016 |
cococandy: Honestly. It's just that sometimes when you talk people will assume you're just interested in putting NIGERIA down because you're living abroad. Can you believe that last year ending someone sent me a picture of paracetamol that was manufactured in 2016 to expire 2018(or so) meanwhile we were still in 2015. That's how horrible we are to each other. Tell me what the producers of those drugs have in mind for the consumers? Bebe2 is right. Most of us lack empathy for the next person.
I love so many things about our country and will make sure my kids are grounded in their roots by visiting frequently. But I'd be really really brave to consider relocating permanently.
Except Dangote agrees to adopt me sha. That way we can enter his jet and fly off if any of us needs medical care. And they think the govt is going to fix all that. OK am waiting. |

EfemenaXY: Bebe2. Did your cousin make it?
Suddenly just remembered her story... My niece in law, she died oo She was 19yrs old. Dats not the worse part, she died in severe pain. A week before she died her dad returned her to her mum saying he is tired dat she is not getting better. The girl call me one day crying that her mum is beating her. I was so angry, I called the mum and out of frustration spoke rudely to her, she said the girl doesn't drink her medicine until they threaten to beat her. I apologised and begged her not to beat her but to take her to the hospital the next morning. They said they are taking her to church and the pastor said the battle has been won. After another round of shouting and apologising they took her and said the doctors has finally given her a diagnosis, dat it's not cancer like I said but Arthritis. That they need money to buy drugs, I sent them money promising to send more. Within 3days the girl died , the mum ran home crying . The rest of the family followed her back to the hospital only to get there to meet that the girls dad has taken the body to his village for burial. And dat was the end of osaherumwen. |
