I have SEVERAL painfully embarassing moments but there are 2 incidents in particular that stand out in my portfolio of embarassing moments
The first was in 2006. I had gone to Afe Babalola Auditorium in UniLag to attend the BLW Christmas Carol show. Now my eyes are myopic,so i use realy thick nerdy lenses. That memorable evening,i didnt want to wear my nerdy glasses becos of all the cute guys that were going to be in attendance so i took off my glasses at the entrance of the hall,put them in their case,straightened my hair and walked confidently in2 the hall. I had barely taken a few steps when i fell with a thunderous crash. Apparently there was a little stair that descended in2 the hall but owing to my weak sight i hadn't seen it. Infact my people,i fall yakata like small pikin. The crash was so loud that the packed hall fell silent. All eyes on me. I was so stunned that i lay supine for a couple of seconds b4 i felt soft hands lifting me. I looked up to behold my elder sister lifting me while struggling to keep from laughing. "Ishi why didnt u wear your glasses?",she asked me,but i was in too much pain and shock to answer. Lo,the said glasses were a few feet away from me where it had fallen out of my bag. I limped shamefacedly to the nearest seat while the hall reveberated with laughter. Of course the rest of the evening was ruined for me and i couldnt enjoy the show.
Fast forward 2yrs to 2008. I had attended a Valentine Day's youth programme in my church with a friend. A contest called "Miss take home Mama" was part of the programme. I am rather homely in appearance but somehow somehow i was picked and i found myself on stage. Now the winner of the contest will be picked by the crowd and we were four girls on stage. The other girls had a fair amount votes,but when it got to my turn, only THREE people in a crowd of close to a THOUSAND voted for me,and the three people consisted of my frend i came with and the pair of twins who were sitting next to us. I was so embarassed,i wished i could just shrink and disappear from the stage. Even as i type i still cringe from the mortifying memory

So in the US, Obama signed a new healthcare law last year. One of the things it achieves is that people can now stay on their parents' health insurance till they are 26, not 20. Also there is argument on legislation on how much the government should contribute to a person's university education. Also in the 1960's LBJ signed in Medicare, which gurantees medical care for Americans over 65 funded by their tax contributions, and Social Security, which provides for the poor and disabled, I believe. The Civil Rights Act was also signed in the 60's and this gave black people equal rights in different facets of society.

My point is all these were big initiatives. They changed the way many Americans lived their lives. Does any one have similar experience with legislation and Executive directives in Nigeria? In your life time, what law or government directive (whether state or federal) significantly changed the course of your life? If there are none, what has our government been doing?

Are you reading others' responses and taking note? I was not asking for the politically correct PR-machine generated opinion of Fashola. I wanted to know how ordinary Lagosians are feeling about his policies. And that is the kind of reply I have seen in the past 10-15 posts.

My point is you cannot use the elctions to justify your assumption that Fashola is doing an excellent job. Plus, the ad hominem attacks are unnecessary. i know you are smart so leave out the insults. If you are claiming that 82% voted for Fashola, I am reminding you that as a percentage of the lagos population, Fashola voters do not represent a huge vote of confidence or some sort of affirmation that he is doing a good job. People are so blind by ideology and herd mentality. No one put up any kind of proof of development. No assessment by any non-partisan body like the UN arm that measures development etc. People are just bringing anecdotal evidence and presenting it as proof. Fashola supporter's, please show us that before Fashola there wewre x number of quality schools and after Fashola there are now X+y or X-y number of quality schools etc etc. No one answered the questioons posed. NL is so , What was the voters turnout in the last guber elections? Aboout 33%. "In Lagos State which has six million registered voters, only about 2million voted, representing about 33 per cent." And the last census concluded that there are about 15 million people in lagos. 1,509113 voted for fashola, so in effect, he was reelcted by 10% of the population. @Eko-Ile, does this still sound like some outstanding mandate to you?

Can someone on ground in Lagos give evidence, both empirical and as a result of their feeling of the vibe in the city, of the difference between Fashola and the past governors? Is it a big difference? Or is he overhyped? If I went back home today, will there be a noticeable and concrete difference in the lives of my family and friends? I ask because despite all the praise fashola receives, when i call home, all I hear is that things are hard.
