Ghurka:
This is the question I keep asking my friends here in the UK.

I came to the UK to do a top-up (final year) Bachelor degree course, which I have now completed. Since I completed my exams 3 months ago, I haven't been able to get a job (Security [I've got the SIA badge], Cleaning, Warehouse Picker etc etc), and this has to do with the fact that I'm on a student visa.

Whenever I mention to my friends that I intend going back to naija, they look at me as if I'm mad, meanwhile, they've all graduated at least 1-2years ago, and the jobs they have cannot be listed on their CVs!. Before I came here for my top-up, I was working in a small Business Consultancy in GRA Ikeja (without a B.Sc) and I was earning 100K (approx 400pounds). The money wasn't so fantastic, but my standard of living was a lot better than it currently is in London. I didn't have to pay rent, worry about feeding etc etc.

I don't believe living abroad is a do-or-die matter, especially as most people are actually suffering here. Moreover, naija is not the worst place on earth, so I don't see any reason why we can't go back home when living abroad turns into a living hell.
@Ghurka,
The greatest expenses all over the world is accommodation cost. If you have free accommodation in London, life will be the best. In Nigeria (e.g. GRA Ikeja), accommodation prices for rent or buy are very high too. Everyone do not have free accommodation and free food as you.

@Poster,

You can buy wholesale (bulk) of african food stuffs at New Spitalfields Market, Sherrin Road, Leyton, London E10 5SQ in the morning (best time is from 4:00am to 7:00am). Share with your friends.
http://www.wholesalefruitvegetableflowers.co.uk/

For Example:
A box of yam is between £18 and £22, at least 8 tubers of yam per box. Its better than buying 1 tuber of yam for £4.

@Poster,

I can feel your situation at this time in the UK. You are not alone. You are a true innovative wife.

1. When you shop at TESCO and Morrisons, look for VALUE range products

2. When you shop at Sainburys, look for BASICS range products

3. Be ready to shop around for basic food stuffs

4. Shop for vegetables and fruits in Saturday and Sunday street markets e.g. Dalston Kingsland street market, East Street market off Old Kent Road, Lewisham Centre street market, Peckham Pulse farmers market near Peckham Library on Sundays, etc.

5. Shop for clothes at Primark

6. If you buy petrol or diesel, avoid BP and Texaco filling stations because their prices are always more expensive than any others.

7. At your spare time, read -  http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/

@usetime,

Be careful when you Google degree awarding universities in the UK. There are some bogus degree awarding universities all over the world who parade themselves as UK.

This is why I suggest you check actual UK government website for accurate information and check each website of the university of your choice depending on the course you plan to do:
http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/recognisedukdegrees/index.cfm?fuseaction=institutes.list&InstituteCategoryID=1&InstituteSubCategoryID=1

Each university has special consideration for adult students and people with work experience (e.g. farming is also work experience). Check the following UK recognised universities:

http://www.buckingham.ac.uk/study/apply/international/entry.html

http://www.northampton.ac.uk/info/20052/study/442/mature-students

@usetime,

I suggest you apply to as many universities as possible in the UK. Universities have different admission policies, especially for adults.

Do not let your third class degree put you off from progressing your career in Nigeria or anywhere else.

See list of recognised degree universities in the UK and links to their website:

Good Christians should learn from this poster.

The common sense approach is: Pray, apply faith and use wisdom.
RomanceRe: Pastors’ Advice On Chastity Earns Me Menopause As Spinster by beknown(m): 12:22pm On Oct 01, 2010
@Poster,

You made a terrible mistake in allowing your Pastor be your Lord instead of Jesus Christ.

The reason you are in your position today is that you fasted and prayed, but failed to act in faith. Faith without work is dead (James 2:26).

It was up to you to accept one of the suitors by faith, faith in God, without passing judgment on every suitor that came to you.

No one is perfect, not even you. You spent your whole life looking for perfection which does not exist.

My advice:
Pray to God for your heart desire. Act in faith on your prayer - faith without work is dead. Meet your friends and christian brethren. Get involve in the work of God, don't leave your faith. Open your eyes as you go out, meet people and be friendly. You are not too old to have a relationship and children of your own.

Read Matthew 7:7 and James 2:26
Christianity EtcRe: My Friend's Wedding Was Cancelled! by beknown(m): 1:10pm On Sep 21, 2010
All,

It is not correct to cancel the wedding. Cancelling the wedding for the reason of pregnancy is not biblical. The fruit of the womb belongs to God. The couple needs guidance and counselling from responsible christian brethren, not hypocrites.

Will Jesus make the same decision? NO!

Now that the wedding is cancelled:
- How will the church treat the fruit of the womb - the baby?
- How will the church treat the sinners - man and woman?
- Which sin is more acceptable?
- Are the rule-makers in the church not sinners too?
- What is the difference between one type of sin and another?

Christianity in Nigeria is as underdeveloped as their environment.

^^^^This is so funny. How many people use Blackberry phones in the rural areas to stamp out electoral fraud. I have been holidaying in Lagos for the past 5 days and i can say only 1 in 200 people use any form of social networking services. People are struggling to feed themselves. Monitoring elections is the last thing on their mind.
@Vealkyrie,

Everybody may not have the flare to monitor election. Some people will always struggle to feed themselves, that is the reality and that could be their destiny. We are not all struggling to feed ourselves.

One reliable person in 1000 is good enough to monitor an election. In fact, one person in a voting centre is enough, more could be better.

@~Bluetooth

I see you do not think anything good can come out of the effort of people at eradicating or, at least, reducing the menace of corruption in our electoral process. That is a very negative view and unreflective of the situation on the ground.

International observers and NGO's cannot replace true local Nigerians in monitoring election process in Nigeria.

I will like you to suggest the way forward because you seem to have criticism against every suggestion of other people.

If you have no suggestion, well, I rest my case.

The summary is that good photographs and video evidence including good legal representation can compel any judge to act rightly.

It is very unfortunate that some people in this forum do not know the capabilities of technology. That shows the extent of ignorance in Nigeria today.

Note:
- A digital camera will work anywhere in Nigeria, including villages.
- Camera phones (for taking photos) will work anywhere in Nigeria, including villages.

usbcable:
What about those villages that dont have internet or mobile comm. Or mms enabled systems working? This is one area that can be exploited and not the cities that are recipes for trouble for the riggers.
in the villages they always have a filled day rigging with no fear.
People do not need internet or mobile comm to be able to take simple photographs with their camera phone.

philip0906:
Hope u ain't mistaking Naija with d yankees huh
@op
If they like they should count it with their own hands,it will still be rigged and nothing will happen.Who wants a bet?
@philip0906
Why are some Nigerians too negative? There is no need to be negative. It is possible to take photos anywhere in Nigeria using mobile camera phones or digital camera. You will be surprised what technology can do to help Nigeria in the next election.

All responsible Nigerians should get camera phones now because the election of January 2011 is too close to delay. No need to wait for the Police or Army to do the job of monitoring our local polling station.
PoliticsRe: Facebook Generation Gears Up To Monitor Nigeria Poll by beknown(m): 8:29am On Sep 09, 2010
The future of Nigeria is dependent on technology and the capability of the Nigerian youths to use technology to the best advantage.
PoliticsRe: Facebook Generation Gears Up To Monitor Nigeria Poll by beknown(m): 8:27am On Sep 09, 2010
Technology is the way to go to get credible election in Nigeria.

Our leaders will not like it because they want to rig and take leadership positions through the back door.

Technology is not well-developed in Nigeria because our leaders are afraid of the capabilities and possibilities available.

Nigerian youths must stand up and say 'ENOUGH IS ENOUGH'.

All Nigerians must be ready to monitor elections in their immediate locality using camera and video phones to gather evidence.

Without good evidence, no hope of success in court. Good evidence will compel any judge to act correctly in court.

@kokorunna,

It is unfortunate that you had a bad experience with Arik Air. I have used Arik Air and others in Europe and America. I can tell you that Arik Air is one of the best airline today.

Travelling direct from London to Nigeria, the best airline is Arik Air. BA and Virgin are unnecessarily over-priced. KLM, Air France, etc are not direct from London and they have too much stop-over inconveniences. Non-direct flights have more chances of lost baggage - too risky for me.

I think Arik Air will surely get better.

right levels of employment and skilled human capital to take rank us among the top 10 fast -growing nation (not fast-growing illiterate nation)

We have more employed illiterate okada riders than literate skilled engineers and doctors etc cry so really we do have a population disastaer on the horizon
As much as graduate literacy will be encouraged, Nigeria does not need graduates to do simple agricultural work. Nigeria need to manage its human resources properly.

In Britain, USA and Europe, graduates do not pick fruits and tomates in the farms. Those are the work of unskilled workforce. Nigeria has high unskilled workforce to do the agricultural jobs.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria Close To Population Disaster – British Council Raises Alarm by beknown(m): 2:11pm On Sep 02, 2010
All,

Nigeria is not overpopulated. There is no population disaster in Nigeria now. We have abundant resources. Our problem is leadership greed, mismanagement and corruption.

Everyone must not discount the fact that we are not utilising our economic resources wisely. This could lead to poverty on a larger scale - population growth or not.

Britain is not as rich as Nigeria in terms of natural resources, human resources and climate.

In fact Britain is mostly surviving on tax revenue.

Nigeria leaders should wake-up and lead the country.

In the absence of real pictures of the properties in Abuja, be very careful with your money.

Besides, Union Homes has a reputation. I am not a salesman for Union Homes and if something is good, I will praise it.

@Bentola,

It is a great idea. That is a good community initiative. Great community effort.

Unfortunately, everyone is waiting for the government to develop their own adjoining roads.

Small communities can work together and engage a local construction company to do the job but nobody want to do it.
