Thank you sir. But that still hasn't answered the question I was hoping to get.. What's the approximate Workmanship cost to roof that size of building..? I am merely weeks off from Starting and I would appreciate a feedback. QSFemi hasn't gotten back to me yet tooo.. FEGEITOK: Not a structural engineer, just mentioning what I observed. I merely happened to stumble upon that site a few hours earlier and felt that since it was relevant to the discussion at hand and I happened to have sometime to spare I decided to share.
I also noticed that the wood used was very different from what obtains in local wood markets, it was very clearly foreign wood. I have seen some foreign building practices that are different from those in Nigeria.
I have also had discussions with those who work with foreign construction firms/foreign trained structural engineers, and these have come up.
Example of another is the way corner blocks are laid. Some builders lay two full corner piece blocks in the L format, others will use a saw to create perfect angles (45 degrees) for the corner blockwork from the two blocks.
Some will build blocks that can be thrown from a truck to the ground without breaking, others will build with blocks that cannot withstand such an impact.
Hope you found the answers you wanted. |

They look great no doubt.. I feel the only issue with them is the maintenance.. They look beautiful when new but once they aren't being maintained well.. And water starts damaging the edges of the wall.. They just look horrible! I could be wrong.. But my opinion tho! tonididdy: I'd prefer the flat roofs any day, anytime henceforth. |

The Carpenter said 2x4 for nogging.. So I thought that was the standard.. FEGEITOK: Visited a Julius Berger construction site where I saw 4 by 4 and 2 by 4 being used as nogging.
I noticed the use of screw guns and screws which is very rare here.
the row just on top of the concrete structure was made up of 4 by 4s. |

I think it depends on the size of the building and clients preference.. Mine was given as 15 feet. The person handling the project said any lower might not bring out the beauty of the roof! chairmanawe: Sir and gurus in the house. Please what is the standard height of a roof? I am a bit confused. My carpenter gave me a quotation for 18 feet roof. Is the length adequate, inadequate or overadequate? Thanks in anticipation for your response |

I think one of them made mention of it being stronger and cause of the weight of pop.. But regardless just let me know what's needed(standard) and I would pass it on to whoever would do the roofing QSFemi: What's their reason for such decision? |

Atlast someone said something.. God bless you Mr femi! They said they are using 2x3 or 2x4 for nogging... QSFemi: Good morning.
I'll vet and revert back asap.
However, ,there's no quote for 2 x 2 (noggin) in these quotations. |

Pls if you don't mind can u share the contact of the carpenter.. I want him to do my roofing this month at atan Ota Dennis3D: Good morning Sir.
The Building is cantilevered at the upper floor. About 13metersx19meters on average.
The Roofing wood work covers both for the POP Nuggings.
The Workmanship for the woodwork is about 190K and its 20fit height that is used for the highest king post at the center.
The Woods were treated before we commenced roofing too with Soligum, Kerosene and oil. |

Thank you.. I recently got a quote from tilcor and it was fair enough.. Would opt for that! sonnie10: Top grade roofing sheets are very expensive eg Tilcor, withtech, gireld. The less expensive ones that are equally good should be those with brand name directly from the company. But not all is as good. Just buy from trusted names.
We did about 900 square meters recently from a reputable company based on previous work done. |

I am well aware they aren't Nigerian buildings.. But similar discolourations occur in Nigerian buildings.... sonnie10: Those pictures are not from Nigeria building. Those discoloration mostly are from the heating system |

Good morning Esteemed members of this reputable forum.. I have a question.. Anyone who has been through Lekki - epe express would notice beautiful buildings with one very huge problem.. Discolored shingles.. It's just like a black patch that grows on the roofing.. From my research I got to know it is algae.
1. How can one avoid this? 2. Are there specific colours of shingles (roof tiles) that are more prone to these algae growth and discolouration 3. Does this have anything to do with ur inferior shingles? 4. How can this be avoided??
Attached to this post are pictures of what I am talking about.
I have gotten to the roofing stage on my build and I really wouldn't want to make any mistake!

Your build looks perfect the way it is.. It's called a cantilever and thats the beauty of the house.. I strongly believe if u didn't trust ur engineer enough u shouldn't have employed his services but since u already have.. U might as well stick to him.. Personally I wouldn't trade my cantilever for anything! I had to go the extra mile to ensure my build had it!.. Blessedpikin: Professionals in the house I really need your advice. I’m worried about the circled area around the verandah of my build I told the engineer handling the project I’m not comfortable leaving the design like that hence he should introduce a pillar to support that angle cos of the weight. Please kindly advice |

. Shey someone said vibration is normal.. . Even bridges vibrate.. Smh.. zamirikpo: Hello guys.....thank God I found this thread.
I have a duplex under construction, we are at the roofing stage now, but my worry is I noticed the decking in two room vibrate if u jump on it. I first noticed it when a helper dropped a bucket of sand on the floor of the deck while I was standing on it. The way I felt a pulse under my feet I didnt like it. Few days later I noticed cracks under the deck......
I called the engineers attention and he said it was poor concrete mixture and that the guyz that poured d decking didn't get to the right level.
His solution is to chisel off the middle of d decking in d room about 9inches and then introduce an external beam.
Meaning we will crack open the middle of the room abt 9inches wide, wall to wall and then introduce a beam under.
What do the experts here thing. I'm really worried bcs cracking a decking isnt soo good, would it not affect the whole building. |

Thank you! uncleteeh: It's better if done before plastering. Plastering makes a wall thicker and tougher. Perforating it after plastering can cause weakness, cracks and the likes. Note: it's harder to break a plastered wall. |

I think for focus mind, it's more of a personal choice! From what he wrote he has had his fair share of duplexes but he doesn't seem to be interested in that anymore when he retires.. Not like there is anything wrong with it tho.. somehow: If built when the children are still young, you'll enjoy it before they finally move out.
Not talking about a family with 2 children though. |
