Prayers: A Special Connection with God Islam signifies the subjection of all activities in all walks of life to the Law of God Almighty, and leaving nothing to the whims and fancies of anyone else. God has commanded the believers to declare: [Truly, my prayer, my service of sacrifice, my life, and my death, are (all) for Allah (God), the Cherisher of the Worlds.] (Al-An`am 6:162) This means that a Muslim is a person who has submitted his or her whole self and whole life to God, so that the first duty of a Muslim is to lead a life of obedience to God alone. And the above quoted commandment also implies that it is wrong to consider our lives to consist of water-tight compartments, saying that "this is the part of my life within the bounds of religion where I am bound to obey God, and these are the secular areas of life where God's laws are irrelevant." The twin sources of Islam — the Quran and the Sunnah — teach that when God Almighty is accepted as the Creator, Sustainer, and Lawgiver, we cannot go after "other gods". Islam is a complete way of life that asks its followers to mold their entire lives in accordance with its principles laid down in the Quran and the Sunnah. This in fact is not an unrealistic idea; it only means a change of perspective or approach. Of course, such a change is bound to have its impact on our life, both internal and external; but for those who wish to lead a good life here, Islam is the way. The important point to note here is that Islam does not impose on its adherents rituals for the sake of rituals, as they are likely to be performed mechanically without understanding their meaning in life. God says in the Quran, which Muslims believe is His word, what means, [It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards East or West; but it is righteousness to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and give zakah (regular charity); to fulfill the contracts which you have made; and to be firm and patient in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the God-fearing.] (Al-Baqarah 2:177) That is to say, if our rituals do not have any impact on our day-to-day life, they are of little value. Similarly, if we do our daily duties that are considered to be outside the generally recognized borders of religious ritual with sincerity and faith expecting reward from God, they too become acts of worship. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once told his Companions that they will be rewarded even for having sexual intercourse with their wives. The Companions were astonished. They asked: "How are we going to be rewarded for doing something we enjoy very much?" The Prophet asked them: "Suppose you satisfy your desires illegally, don't you think that you will be punished for that?" They replied, "Yes". "So" he said, "by satisfying it legally with your wives, you are rewarded for it". (Muslim) This all-inclusive approach to worship encourages people to purify and spiritualize their whole lives. But this is not to disparage ritualistic worship. In fact, rituals, if performed with a full understanding of their inner significance, equip the worshippers with a moral and spiritual power that help them to carry out their daily activities in the various spheres of life informed by the guidance of God. Thus in Islam, the term "worship" (in Arabic, ibadah) does not signify merely the "pillars of Islam" such as prayer, fasting, charity or pilgrimage. It includes all the activities of a believer; in fact, it stands for everything a Muslim believes, says, or does. When believers perform all the activities of their lives seeking the pleasure of God, then all their deeds become worship. Naturally, this also includes the rituals they perform, such as prayer. We can see that the worship of God as visualized in Islam — whether it is ritual or non-ritual — prevents evil thoughts and actions, thereby purifying life. Indeed, sincere Islamic worship trains the individual to lead a life of complete obedience and submission to God. Prayers Of all the forms ofritual worship in Islam, prayer (in Arabic, salah) is unique. It is typical of Islam and is entirely different from the usual kind of prayer familiar in other religions. The prostration in prayer symbolizes the worshipper's total and unconditional submission to God Almighty. Of course certain supplications are recited in prayer, following the Prophetic teaching. But the objective of prayer is not this-worldly. Muslims can pray to God for the solution of the immediate problems they confront any time, in any language. But they are not authorized to change the language of the utterances in prayer, nor can they change its form or content. Muslims have to strictly adhere to its form as taught to by Prophet Muhammad. Muslims believe that God has made prayer compulsory for all His prophets as well as their followers, as it is evident from the Quran. To Moses, God said what means, [Verily I am Allah: There is no god but Me: so worship Me only and establish regular prayer for My remembrance.] ( Ta-Ha 20:13-14) The important aspect of a believer's faith is his or her relationship with God; and nowhere is this relationship exemplified as in prayer. Prayer lifts a person spiritually towards his or her Creator and if it is done with devotion and sincerity, his or her heart will be filled with the love of God and the hope of Paradise. Praying five times a day helps Muslims to constantly remember God and seek His forgiveness and pleasure. Besides, it offers an occasion for repentance, so that they earnestly ask Allah for forgiveness of the sins they committed. Prophet Muhammad said, "Imagine a stream outside a person's door and imagine that he bathes in it five times a day; do you think he would have any dirt on him?" The people said, "Not at all." The Prophet then said, "The five daily prayers are like that: Allah wipes away the sins by them." (Al-Bukhari) The most important aspect of a person's relationship with God, is his or her strong faith and sincerity. This relationship with God is clearly borne out and strengthened by prayer. If the prayer is performed with true devotion to God and with a sincere heart, it will have a lasting effect on the person. God says in the Quran what means, [Establish regular prayer: for prayer restrains from shameful and evil deeds; and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that you dd.] (Al-`Ankabut 29:45) Certainly a person's God-consciousness awakened by prayer strengthens him or her against temptations arising from the weakness of the flesh. Again God says in the Quran what means: [Truly man was created very impatient; fretful, when evil touches him; and niggardly, when good reaches him; not so those devoted to Prayer and those who remain steadfast to their prayer.] (Al-Ma`arij 70:19-23) Thus it is prayer that enables believers to keep in constant touch with their Creator and to keep steady in the face of the temptations and the pressures life. |
Protection from Bad Dreams Also, you are supposed, dear brother in Islam, to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when going to sleep. Try to recite the last two verses from Surat Al-Baqarah (the Cow), as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever recites the last two verses from Surat Al-Baqarah at night, they will be sufficient for him." (Narrated by Al-Bukhari, 3786; Muslim, 807). Also it is Sunnah to recite Surat Al-Ikhlas and Al-Mu`awwidhatayn before you sleep. `Aa'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, narrates: "On going to bed, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would blow into his hands and recite Surat Al-Ikhlas and Al-Mu`awidhatyn." Then he would wipe his hands over his face and his body, as far as they could reach." `Aa'ishah continues: "When he fell ill, He would ask me to do that for him.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari, 5416; Muslim, 2192) Al-Bara' Ibn `Aazib, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates: The Prophet said to me, "Whenever you go to bed, perform ablution like the one you perform for the prayer, lie on your right side and say, "Allahumma aslamtu wajhi ilaika, wa fawadtu 'Amri ilaika, wa alja'tu Zahri ilaika raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika. La Malja'a wa la manja minka illa ilaika. Allahumma amantu bikitabika-l-ladhi anzalta wa bina-biyika-l ladhi arsalta" (O Allah! I surrender to You and entrust all my affairs to You and depend upon You, fearing You, and reposing my hope in You. There is no fleeing from You, and there is no protection and safety except with You, O Allah! I believe in Your Book (the Qur'an) which You have revealed and in Your Prophet (Muhammad) whom You have sent). Then if you die on that very night, you will die as believer (in the religion of Islam). Let the aforesaid words be your last utterance (before sleep)." I repeated it before the Prophet and when I reached "Allahumma amantu bikitabika-l-ladhi anzalta (O Allah I believe in Your Book which You have revealed)." I said, "Wa-rasulika (and your Messenger)." The Prophet said, "No, say: 'Wanabiyika-l-ladhi arsalta (Your Prophet whom You have sent), instead." Also on this issue, Abu Hurayrah was quoted as saying: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to tell us that when any one of us wanted to sleep, he should lie on his right side, then say ‘Allahumma Rabb al-samaawaati wa Rabb al-ard wa Rabb al-‘Arsh il-‘Azeem, Rabbana wa Rabba kulli shay’in, faaliq al-habb wa’l-nawa wa munazzil al-Tawraata wa’l-Injeela wa’l-Furqaan, a’oodhu bika min sharri kulli shay’in anta aakhidhun bi naasiyatihi. Allahumma anta al-awwal fa laysa qablaka shay’un, wa anta al-aakhir fa laysa ba’daka shay’un. Wa anta az-Zaahir fa laysa fawqaka shay’un wa anta al-baatin fa laysa doonaka shay’un. Iqdi ‘annaa al-dayna wa aghninaa min al-faqr (O Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, and Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, Splitter of the seed and the date stone, Revealer of the Tawraat (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel) and the Furqaan (Qur’an), I seek refuge in You from the evil of all things that You will seize by the forelock [i.e., have full control over them]. O Allah, You are the First and there is nothing before You; You are the Last and there is nothing after You. You are the Manifest (az-Zaahir) and there is nothing above You; You are the Hidden (al-Baatin) and there is nothing beyond You. Settle our debt and spare us from poverty).’” (Narrated by Muslim, 2713). Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was also quoted as saying: “Abu Bakr said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, teach me something that I can say in the morning and in the evening.’ He said: “Say, ‘Allahumma ‘Aalim al-ghaybi wa’l-shahaadah, Faatir al-samawaati wa’l-ard, Rabba kulli shay’in wa maleekahu, ashhadu an laa ilaaha illa anta. A’oodhi bika min sharri nafsi wa min sharr il-shaytaan wa sharakihi (O Allah, Knower of the seen and the Unseen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord and Sovereign of all things, I bear witness that there is no god except You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own self and from the evil and traps of Satan).’ Say this in the morning and in the evening, and when you go to bed.’” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3392; Abu Dawood, 5067). Dear brother in Islam, we hope you will stick to reciting those supplications which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, taught us, as clarified in the above Hadiths. With regard to protection from magic, read the following fatwas: |

Lie #1: 'If you live a moral life, deny yourself pleasure, follow the prescribed rituals and give us enough money, you'll have a decent shot at being accepted by God.' ~~~ Abdul, Remember that scene near the end of the Wizard of Oz, when Toto is pulling back the curtain? The sound system is bellowing, 'Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. THE GREAT AND POWERFUL OZ HAS SPOKEN!' And There's a little man behind the controls, talking into a microphone. Kind of reminds you of certain religious institutions, doesn't it? Short little insecure men, hiding behind names and titles, sending everyone on Mission Impossible while they themselves indulge in secret sin. The preacher stands in front of thousands and shakes his finger. Nobody else knows that he had a stripper in his hotel room last night. Somebody tells you, 'Here, follow all these rules and be the best person you possibly can, and you might have a shot at being accepted by God someday.' Then they string you along and get you under their thumb. No wonder people are cynical. Well it's no accident that Jesus' own biggest enemies 2000 years ago were precisely those same self-righteous hypocrites. When Jesus showed up, they were terrified of losing their cushy jobs and political clout. Eventually they murdered him for exposing their racket. True spirituality had been buried in a big pile of bureaucracy, and the religious establishment used it to gain leverage. To have power over people, to get priority seating in expensive restaurants, and to line their pockets with cash. They had everyone thinking that pleasing God was a never-ending performance marathon. Well Jesus painted a totally different picture. He told this story: 'Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a holy man and the other a tax collector. The holy man stood and prayed, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this lousy tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far away, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' Jesus explains: 'I tell you, this tax collector went home forgiven, rather than the holy man; for every one who praises himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be praised.' Beware of the proud holy man who hangs a bunch of rules around your neck. That humble tax collector had it right. He was doing the only thing you and I can do to be accepted by God. He just asked, with humility. Tomorrow I'm going to attack Lie #2: 'God is huge and unapproachable, and He wants you to labor, struggle and live in guilt.' Thanks for reading! |

I watch thread grow on nl, moving from religion section to islam, but i must be sincere with you guys, I am a muslim, and a proud one indeed, some people claim to believe in God but they do not. the Christians have always love to insult islam in argument in the name of condemning it. if you go to the religion section even here on nl, u will see a clear religious argument between xtians and muslim and b4 u know it, the xtian will raise abuse on Allah and mohammed, why must u insult others in the name of condemning there religion?, if u don't have more points to back your claim, u shut up and go do more search, but instead of d xtians do that, they start abusing muslims, but for the muslims, we cant start abusing Jesus because we know is importance. when u watch them abuse ur religion, they enjoy doing it and even feel good about it.some times u get annoyed an respond, upon responding, the xtains get angry and from there if the muslim person is not a patient type, they will end up using abusive word on each other, if you go to the religious section, you will understand what am saying, if these can be happening on the internet where we do not see each other, what do you think will happen if its physical? learn to respect other peoples religion, quote author=Builder link=topic=409951.msg5661912#msg5661912 date=1268204548] Muslims ready to slice off anyones head for insulting Allah or mohammed, rioting and packing planes in building. Pastors ready to enriched their pockets by scamming their church people of their lifesavings all in the name of donation and tithes and traditional worshippers on the look out for fresh heads and blood to entice their gods. Really, whats the positive significance of religion in todays nigeria, whereas nigeria every second is decending to a new low. [/quote]why should u insult Allah or muhammed in the first place, if you dont beleive them, no one is forcing u to,from time, xtian have always been preaching against islam and muslims have always been preaching against xtian and that did not result into fight, but why give islam the wrong interpretation b4 the public, if u preach against me, that's good, but do not say what i don't do. don't say i am what i am not, when they lie against u in the name of preaching, that is wrong, |

Pat Utomi Do we want to become a failed state? If we don't we have to force the FG to sit up and act. The indecisiveness of the FG is empowering forces of darkness. Take Jos for instance, why have we not speedily tried and jailed those responsible for the December and January killings? This shows weakness. The perpetrators of the violence are emboldened by this weakness and that's why hundreds died yesterday in Jos. PU What is 'Democratic' in the Peoples 'Democratic' Party if it can undemocratically order Jonathan not to contest in 2011. Not that I want a Jonathan candidacy, but demoracy is about choice not imposition. Was it not the imposition of Yar'adua that has led to this current crisis? Let everyone contest. Again, I want to say how impressed I am with the efforts of the producers of this channel. Especially in these uncertain times youths must take time to know and properly assess the leadership abilities of those that lead or seek to lead them. PU “I am the minister of information for the Federal Republic of Nigeria but if you ask me, I have no information about this matter” Dora Akunyili, March 1st, 2010.I commend Dora for speaking the truth. If his minister of Information does not know, who then knows the truth about his health? I call on the ExCOF to summon the courage to relieve Nigeria from this shame. PU. Youths need to proactively x ray the current administration and those who desire to lead this country come 2011 if we must move beyond the fiasco that have been the past 2 years. PU. This situation is playing out like a badly produced village play. Why for instance would acting president Jonathan have to meet with Turai? What role does the constitution give her in directing the affairs of Nigeria? This comedy has gone on for too long and we need to call for decorum at the villa. PU. It's betrays distrust between the President and his Deputy/cabinet that he kept word of his return from them. If the presidency cant work as a team can we be surprised that they've achieved little since 2007? The President's spokesman says that Jonathan would still be in charge. The Anambra elections have vindicated the Uwais Committee. If Yar'adua (who imposed Soludo as the Anambra PDP candidate without a primary) was not on his sick bed, Soludo would have won. But the true winner emerged because the president could not intervene. With the crisis over Yar'adua's disappearance, we've failed to note that inflation has risen sharply, foreign debts have increased from $1.9 in 2007 to $4 billion and both the Reserve and the Excess Crude Account which held $48 and $12 billion in 2007 have been depleted. Rather than address these. |
