Politics / Re: Firm To Invest $6bn In Electricity Generation by binary007: 9:05am On Mar 06, 2017
abumeinben:
grin

Status: confused

Possible reason: Coals are mined in the east, gases explored South South, yet the North enjoys power supply more than other zones.

Any else?
: yes please.

Spill it: By estimate, $1b generates 1000MW. How come $6b was raised to generate 1200MW of same electricity?

Besides, I hope this is not Zuma, our brotherly neighbour from down south.

God bless your inquisitive mind.
Longtan Dam and Hydropower Station - Guangxi, China (Cost: $4.2 Billion US)
Longtan Dam is a large roller-compacted concrete (RCC) gravity dam on the Hongshui River in Tian'e County of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, a tributary of the Xi River and the Pearl River. The dam is 216.2 m (709.3 ft) high and 849 m (2,785 ft) long; it is the tallest of its type in the world. The dam is intended for hydroelectric power production, flood control and navigation. The dam contains seven surface spillways, two bottom outlets and an underground power station. The installed electric power generation capacity of the dam is 6,426MW.

I'm always confused when money is being quoted in Nigeria, it is like we are trading in alien currency with unknown exchange rate..
$6bn for 1200MW??
Why am I not surprised?

Education / Final Year Students Force Lecturer To Mop Floor, Wash Toilet... by binary007: 2:34pm On Feb 27, 2017
A lecturer in the English Department, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, Isiaq Yusuf, popularly called I.G. Yusuf, has become an object of ridicule after he was caught naked in his student’s apartment.

The fiancé of the 400-level student and his friend, who caught Yusuf while he was allegedly prepared to have sex with her, made him to mop the living room, wash the toilet, and took his nude pictures, which had gone viral.
The lecturer had reportedly insisted on sleeping with the student so she could pass ENG 201 titled, “History of English Language in Nigeria”.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the final year student, who had failed the course consecutively, became frustrated and feared the lecturer could fail her again, thereby extending her year of study.

She was said to have told her fiancé about the problem she was having with the lecturer and a plan was made to end the lecturer’s harassment.

“ENG 201 is taken in the first semester and exams will soon commence. Last Wednesday, the fiancé and his friend went to Mercy’s residence outside the campus. The lecturer was bent on having sex with her before she could pass the course.

“They told her to invite Mr. Yusuf to come and do what he was demanding while they hid in the toilet. As the lecturer removed his clothes to sleep with her, they came out of the toilet. They gave him a mop to clean the toilet and the living room,” one of the students, who did not want his name in print, told our correspondent.

Another student said the lecturer had been accused of sexually harassing female students.

“But there was no evidence to nail him until now. The department is aware of the incident and it has been taken up by the school management. According to information, he will face a panel on Monday (today) or Tuesday,” he added.

An alumnus of the university, who finished from the department, told PUNCH Metro that he had advised the lecturer to get married.

“He is about 50-year-old and currently studying for his PhD. I had advised him to stop chasing female students and start his own family. This is a big shame and a lifetime embarrassment,” the ex-student added.

The Chairman of the university’s Servicom Unit, which sees to complaints lodged to the school, Dr Ebenezer Ogungbe, said he learnt about the incident on the social media, adding that appropriate disciplinary actions would be taken.

He said, “There are laid down rules when things like this happen. So, the rules will be followed. A committee will be put in place to investigate the matter so that justice is done.”

The management, on the institution’s website, confirmed that a committee had been set up to investigate the case and promised to do justice to the case.

The statement read, “The university management is aware of the recent unfortunate incident between a male lecturer and a female student. In view of this, the management has set up a committee to investigate the immediate and remote cause(s) of the incident. The committee is headed by the deputy vice-chancellor and involves all stakeholders in the matter.

“Accordingly, all parties involved are hereby advised to exercise restraint. The university community and the general public are assured of the management’s resolve to take appropriate disciplinary action against any party found guilty.”

However, the lecturer denied the allegation that he attempted to have sex with the student. He stated that she connived with some men to kidnap him on his way home around 10pm on Tuesday, adding that he was forced to remove his clothes.

He said, “There was a test conducted by a fellow lecturer on Tuesday for 400-level students. I don’t take any course at that level. They had to be split into two and the lecturer invited me to assist him to administer the test. Towards the end of the test, I noticed there was a boy sitting in front of the girl. He raised his paper up for the girl to copy.

“I saw them and warned the boy. He just smiled instead of him to obey my warning and continued. I asked to forward his paper if he had finished and he reluctantly forwarded it to me. The rule of test is that if you are found cheating, we will tear your paper. I wrote on his paper ‘found cheating’. I tore the paper and threw it into a dustbin.

“Later in the evening, I began to receive calls from this girl, asking me to see her. She said the boy whose paper I tore had not let her have peace and that he wanted to see me so that the lecturer could consider him for a make-up (test). I told her she should let us meet the next day.

“On my way home, as I reached a junction leading to her house, I saw her standing by the roadside with some men. As soon as she entered my car, the men also entered from behind and pressed a metal on my back. So, I drove until they got to the house.

“As soon as I got into the room, they removed my clothes and poured water on me. They demanded N2m ransom from me. I have been traumatised. Presently, I have been suspended and will appear before a panel on Monday (today).”

Yusuf explained further that she had never taught the student ENG 201, saying that she “actually failed two courses he taught her in 300-level.”

“She passed four courses I had taught her in 100 and 200 levels,” he added.

NYSC / FUTA PCMS': With The Ongoing Strike, Any Good News On NYSC This Year? by binary007: 11:23am On Nov 10, 2016
It is definitely no news that Futa is currently on an internal strike, and according to Nysc, Statement of result/transcript (which is currently unavailable for futa pcms) is a core prerequisite for the youth service. So does this mean no entry into Nysc camp after all hopes has been raised? or is there any chance FUTA Pcms' would defile all odds and still make it to camp without the basic requirement. Any update would be nice...... Shalom.

You got me there, you should have expatiated better so as to get your point.
Hmm, if they are caught, I guess they should be rehabilitated, they are doing this out of their own will. They are doing it according to the instruction they were given. So, it will not be right to punish them for crimes they committed under duress or compulsion.

Beautifully put, you just displayed the perfect attribute of a sportman.. Thumbs up man, the future of debate is secured with someone like you around.

I'm sorry, your question sounds funny to me. Why should the Chibok girls be jailed? Were they criminals or what offence can you point out that they commit?
Those girls were just victims of circumstances and such be integrated back to the society. They need to be possibly rehabilitated into the society.

It is expedient to point that we are considering whether jail terms serves as deterrent to crime or absolute rehabilitation a better option.

If at all we should talk about the Chibok girls, what we should emphasize is that whether their abductors be put to jail when caught or the abductors should be rehabilitated.

I put it to you, should the abductors of Chibok girls be jailed or rehabilitated when caught?

It is pretty difficult to enter a debate with someone with a different orientation as yours, where have you been? Haven't you been following national dalies? Some of the abducted chibok girls were allerged to have been converted into suicide bombers, obviously, terrorism is punishable under the law isn't it, so if you personally caught one of them on the act, arrest her and you have the power to decide her fate.(jail, death or rehabilitation) which would you sign up for?

Hmm. In as much as I won't like to point this out. I doubt if you read the article.

“As at July, 2014, there were 1,914 inmates
and offenders on remand in the 800-inmate-
capacity prison in Ikoyi and more than 70 per
cent of them were awaiting trial."

Your point is the same as mine, you are just trying to turn things around, the prison is overpopulated and rehabilitation is encourged. Bottom line!

In as much as I feel for human and believe in the notion that we should temper justice with mercy.
I'll like to point out that those responsible for the abduction of Chibok girls and detonation of bombs be sent to jail when caught.
Have you ever sat down to reflect what damage they had caused to the family of the girls?
Have you ever sat down to reflect on the fact that they have jeopardized those students future?
Have you ever sat down to reflect on the fact that they may have possibly killed an icon that will make Nigeria and even Africa proud?

What we want is justice for the children. Do you think rehabilitation will change all what I've told you to reflect on? It will not. Let's put ourselves in the shoes of their parents, if your sister were among the abducted Chibok girls, will you argue that those responsible should be rehabilitated and as such not fave punishment for their crime?

My question is should any "chibok girl" if caught be jailed or rehabilitated?

@Binary007, in as much as I really agree with some of what you posted, that human beings should be treated as humans and their dignity should be respected.

Are you concluding or affirming the fact that every convicted criminal or offender if regardless of their offence, be transferred to rehabilitation centres?

Kindly re-read my conclusion, I said rehabilitation should be encouraged most, depending on the graveness of the offense commited, prison should only be a resort, possibly after failed rehabilitation.

Hmm. For the source, this is it

www.is.wayne.edu/StuartHenry/Effectiveness_of_Punishment.htm

You can go through the content to get what I meant.

You said rehabilitation has worked regardless of its cost. Taking our dear country for an instance, do you think rehabilitation program is effective? and why do you think it is not effective, if your answer is No to my first question?

What statistics can you give me to point out that rehabilitation had reduced recidivism?

Hmm. Ad you've said earlier that prison inmates are required to be provided with adequate feeding and other basic amenities.

It will be expedient to point out to you that most people kept in prisons are those who are awaiting trial and as such due to our sub-standard criminal justice system, the government is just probably wasting funds on such individuals.
http://dailypost.ng/2014/10/27/lagos-official-laments-inmates-population-nigerian-prisons-advocates-community-service/

As regards you last citation, I would recommend you re-read it and absorb the context, the write up spoke about lagos advocating community service(which is a form of rehabilitation) over jail because of population explosion in prison, I think that post supports my cause better than yours, thanks anyways

Thollulope:
Good day moderator
panel of judges
adjudicators
fellow contestants
and to the viewers
Am thollulope representing the university of Ibadan . I speak for the notion "The judiciary ,criminal proceedings and judgement. Do jail terms
usually serve as a deterrent or is absolute rehabilitation a better option?
First and foremost, according to vocabulary.com,deterrent is a means of preventing one from doing something , on the other hand rehabilitation means the act of restoring something to its normal state.
The concept of jail terms signals clearly that certain conducts are wrong.
This shows an offender wrong doing and prevents him from repeating such actions .the concept of jail terms brings punishment and absolute solution to criminal.the concept of rehabilitation resets on the assumption that criminal acts is caused by certain factors . come to think of it, how will rape, corruption and terrorism be by certain factor ,rehabilitationdoes not serve as the best for offenders. If crime were a matter of free choices ,then there would be nothing within particular individuals to be fixed.
In developed countries , corruption is a grave offense and these jail terms has immensely reduced the rate of such because it serves as a lesson for others. can rehabilitation do such ? it will only breed more criminals.
For victims and citizens , jail terms shows that there is justice. how will one be rehabilitated for killing my brother because he has excuses. crimes isn't pathology and coincidental. it shows that no matter the class , position and wealth ,nobody is above the law.
Jail terms shows equality and capability of the judicial .
In conclusion, will my opponent feel of rehabilitating a criminal and knowing human decisions arent factorised
Thanks

Hmm. You mean cost the state and society obscene amounts? Do you know that rehabilitation programs cost much money?
Rehabilitation is pragmatic in theory, it is not financially feasible. It comes with a high cost and requires great deal of money. US is already facing unrelenting budget quandaries in the area of rehabilitation and therefore has little funds remaining to invest in exorbitant rehabilitation programs.

So can you please explain to me how jail terms cost the states and society obscene amounts?

Thanks a lot for your question, Cost of a good is measure relative to the value and worth of such good, would you agree with me? The govenment is obligated to 3 squared meal daily to inmates in prison, a semi-condusive platform for sleeping for as long as a prison runs with absolutely no value in return, prisoner comes in and goes out after years only to return back into the prison after another crime, Rehabilitation has been proven to work regardless of the cost, you can guarantee a positive turnout, how then can you argue that rehabilitation is costlier, and you said something about united states being in debt, kindly reference your source.
