“Many emerging market and frontier asset markets will come under pressure,” Razia Khan, chief economist for Africa for Standard Chartered Bank, tells Quartz. “Much will depend on how quickly someΠ sort of financial market stability can be restored.”The UK’s minister for Africa and advocate for leaving, James Duddridge, has promised that relations with the continent would only improve without the burden of the EU, but Africa’s largest economies are still likely to suffer.

SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa’s rand and trade. South Africa’s already battered economy may be the worst affected by Britain’s exit. As it became clear that the UK vote had swung toward leaving, the rand plunged during early morning trading, becoming the worst performing currency after the British pound. As of mid-morning the rand had fallen more than 7%, its steepest single-day decline since the 2008 financial crisis.

Along with their peers on the London Stock Exchange,major South African companies dual-listed in London and Johannesburg are being hammered. South Africa’s close financial ties to the UK could be a problem—British banks’ claims on South African entities account for 178% of South Africa’s foreign currency reserves, according to analysts from UniCredit.Economists also worry that trade between Africa’s most industrialized economy and the UK will suffer. “In a related development troops of 7 Division recovered and successfully detonated Improvised Explosive Device planted by suspected Boko Haram terrorists that came in Keke NAPEP in Gomari, Maiduguri metropolis this evening in conjunction with Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Device team.


“This development has necessitated the call for more vigilance and security conscious on the part of everyone especially the residents of Maiduguri and its environs.



“The fight against the menace of Boko Haram terrorists is a collective responsibility that require positive contribution from all citizenry. People should please be wary of suspicious persons or objects and report same to the nearest security agency or post.”

‘Red Scorpion’ militants claim responsibility for blowing up oil pipelines

A new militant group called the Red Scorpion, based in Imo state, has claimed responsibility for blowing up two pipelines belonging to Elf Oil Company in Awara in Ohaji Egbema Council Area of Imo State.

This admission comes as the militant group had threatened to blow up the Shell Pipelines in Oguta.

The group in a post on their Facebook account yesterday, said that their threat should not be taken as an empty one as they have the capability to carry it out, warning that until the oil producing areas in the state are given their due, the oil companies operating in the areas will know no peace.

Meanwhile, some of the ex-militants from the area, who confirmed the existence of the new group, said that they were not part of the renewed spate of militancy.

According to one of them, who preferred anonymity, “people are angry and blowing up pipelines is no longer news…”
