Politics › Re: Benue Farmers Sue Fulani Herdsmen For N100bn by bittertruthz: 8:17am On Apr 18, 2016 |
damiloladuke: A Makurdi High Court Judge, Justice Morris Ikpambese, has granted a motion ex parte brought by the people of Tyoshin community in the Gwer-West Local Government Area of Benue State claiming N100bn from six Fulani herdsmen for destroying their farms. While granting the motion brought by the counsel for the plaintiffs, Justice Ikpambese ordered that the writ of summons be served on the respondents by substituted means.
He said the writ of summons should be served in the office of the chairman, civilian joint task force on the Tiv-Fulani affairs in Benue and Nasarawa states in the premises of the office of the deputy governor of the state.
The judge said the summons should also be served by pasting same on the notice board of the High Court of Justice, Makurdi, adding that he was satisfied with the submission of the plaintiff’s’ counsel that efforts made to effect direct service on the respondents had proved abortive as shown by the exhibit before the court. In the statement of claim, the plaintiffs, led by Mr Shuwem Mnguduguen, alleged that six Fulani herdsmen simply identified as, Alhaji Doka, Alhaji Danka, Alhaji Shagari, Alhaji Dogo, Alhaji Ilo and Alhaji Ibrahim – destroyed their farms and land, demanding that the trespassers should pay them N100bn.
They equally prayed the court to restrain them from further trespass on their land. The PUNCH learnt that Fulani herdsmen started attacking communities in the Gwer-West LGA in 2011. During the latest attacks, 17 communities were destroyed while unspecified number of houses, farms and stores of harvested crops were destroyed. During a tour of the affected communities organised by the Chairman of the Gwer-West LGA traditional council, Chef Daniel Abomtse, newsmen counted 33 shallow graves of women and children killed in the attacks.
In 2012, hundreds of the herdsmen invaded the local government area and occupied devastated areas with their cattle and allegedly killed the remnants, forcing the then state governor, Gabriel Suswam, to request the presence of soldiers. Meanwhile, a chieftain of the pan Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Mr. Ayo Opadokun, has said various ethnic groups in Nigeria need to hold a dialogue in order to fashion out a lasting solution to the atrocities of herdsmen across the country. Opadokun, who is a lawyer, said the crisis had assumed a national dimension and urgent steps needed to be taken to avert the problem which could snowball into a major national crisis.
Speaking with journalists after the dedication of the new First Baptist Church, Offa, the NADECO chieftain said it was wicked for a group of people to cause pains and kill people through their activities. He added, “Nobody should be under any illusion; we are in a major crisis. Let the ethnic nationalities have a democratic arrangement and sit down to treat and deal with the problem.
“There must be term and the rule of engagement and modus operandi. As a result of such concurrence, we can now fashion out a new constitution, which will be called the ground norm, that is our home-made constitution, to which all can subscribe. “We don’t have that now; that is why a group of people will leave their own place go and destroy the crops of other persons in another part of the country, and then when the farmers ask questions and they go to the police, they will be the ones who will be abused and sometimes detained.
“The Fulani herdsmen will go scot-free and the government knows about this. I think there was a meeting about this yesterday (Saturday) and the Minister of Interior spoke about it so he knows about it.” Opadokun said the church in Nigeria had regrettably not been a change agent due to activities of some Christian leaders which he said was undermining the cause of Jesus Christ.
According to him, some churches receive proceeds of illegal transactions from their members without trying to probe the sources of their wealth. Opadokun believed that the Federal Government needed loans to complete some of the projects started by the previous administrations. He, however, said such loans must be channelled towards providing essential infrastructure such as good road network and railway transportation system which he said would boost the nation’s economy.

DONSMITH123: Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described the raging controversies between the Presidency and the National Assembly over the 2016 Budget as a confirmation of his position that President Mohammadu Buhari was clueless and incompetent, saying; “Nigerians should expect more blunders like this until they send Buhari back to Daura in 2019.” The governor, who said it was now obvious that the President and his All Progressives Congress (APC) only wanted power desperately without the wherewithal to govern, added that; “I warned Nigerians of the consequences of electing an octogenarian as president and with the international embarrassment that this budget crisis has become, I have been vindicated.”
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Assistant on Pubic Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said;
“It is obvious that there is total disconnection between the President and his cabinet members as many of the ministers don’t even have access to him probably because the President spend most of his time resting as a result of his old age.”
He said; “The reality is that the President is challenged by age, exposure and ability. He did not read the budget proposal that he presented to the National Assembly and this should be a lesson for those who clamoured for a Buhari’s presidency that no man can give what he does not have.
“The question is; can a minister present supplementary budget to the National Assembly and can the National Assembly act on budget proposal submitted by a minister?
“It is shameful that after blaming former President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for close to one year, the presidency is now blaming the National Assembly for its inability to prepare a common budget.”
The governor commended the National Assembly for exposing the alleged lies and hypocrisy of the presidency, saying it was shameful that President Buhari and his men could blame the National Assembly for their incompetence.
He called on the National Assembly not to succumb to blackmail and intimidation from the Presidency, saying that the way and manner the Presidency was going about blackmailing and intimidating other arms of government, especially the judiciary should worry lovers of democracy and good governance in the country.
The governor, who declared that Nigeria will no longer be ruled by octogenarians, said; “Nigerians must have now come to terms that I warned them that Buhari is too old to govern a country like Nigeria.”

Blackberrybabes: The Defence authorities have said that not less than 800 members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect had surrendered to the military in the last three weeks. The Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, confirmed to our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday that 800 of the insurgents surrendered to the troops of the Nigerian Army in the last three weeks. He said, “I can confirm that about 800 of the Boko Haram members have surrendered to the military.” Abubakar spoke barely 24 hours after the Defence Headquarters announced the establishment of a rehabilitation camp for repentant Boko Haram members. Abubakar had said in a statement on Tuesday that the rehabilitation camp was being established under Operation Safe Corridor which was created as a platform to rehabilitate and integrate repentant members of the sect to the society.
He had said that the insurgents would be made to go through vocational training under the programme and empowered for reintegration into the society. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army said on Wednesday that it had rescued 11,595 captives of the Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East in the last one month.
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Wednesday that some of the hostages were rescued from the communities erstwhile under Boko Haram control in the North-East while others were received from Cameroon. He stated that out of the figure, the troops of the 155 Task Force Battalion received 10,000 refugees from the Cameroonian authorities at Banki and the Bama area on March 1,2916. Usman said that the Army Headquarters Special Forces Battalion rescued 779 captives at Fotokol general area between Nigeria and Cameroon in addition to 63 others freed from Boko Haram at Maleri, Borno State.
He added that the troops of the 254 Task Force Battalion also rescued 45 persons at Kuaguru, while 143 Battalion similarly rescued 27 persons at Gadayamo,15 at Galadadani Dam in Madagali and 10 persons from Disa village in the first week March, 2016. The Acting Army spokesman added that troops of the 22 Brigade and their counterparts from the Army Headquarters Strike Group freed 309 hostages from the Boko Haram at the Kala Balge general area on March 23, 2016.
According to him, similar efforts yielded results with the rescue of 48 men, 85 women, 137 children at Zahdra and Weige villages by troops of the 25 Task Force Brigade on March 30,2016.

Firefire: Interfering in religious practice is tantamount to abusing the constitutional right of freedom of association and religion.
"38. (1) Every person shall be entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom (either alone or in community with others, and in public or in private) to manifest and propagate his religion or belief in worship, teaching, practice and observance". Littering bills and posters across the city, sound pollution, training militants by muslim clerics etc is not a constitutional right of freedom of association and religion. Unauthorized preaching in the bus by Christians and muslims especially is annoying and denying the occupants of the bus constitutional right to live in peace and liberty. Im a christian, dont let religious sentiment to over shadow constitution. Like the muslims take religion ahead of constitution. If you ever CARE of constitutional right of freedom of association and religion. WHY PASTORS DESTROYING SHRINE AND INDIGENOUS PLACE OF WORSHIP THAT HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE FOR CENTURIES BEFORE CHRISTIANITY CAME TO AFRICA? |
Christianity Etc › Re: Catholic Church Cautions El-Rufai Over Religious Bill by bittertruthz: 7:23am On Apr 03, 2016 |
Firefire: By Caleb Ayansina (Abuja) & Olayinka Latona (Lagos) ABUJA –
THE Catholic Church, has sent a strong warning to Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai over the move to enact a religious bill to prohibit preaching of religious sermons in the state.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja, the Director of Caritas International, a department under the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Rev. Fr. Evaristus Bassey said the peoples’ will is sovereign and must be respected, noting that the bill had enormous potential abuses, therefore, it should not become law, because it would be misused against one religion by ambitious state officials.
Fr. Bassey said: “The danger in Nigeria is the manipulation of structures and institutions by strong individuals. Thus, the fear is that even if the proposed bill contains good aims, the proposed restrictions would play into the hands of officials of state who have a hegemonic mentality and would allow them the freedom to persecute one religion in favour of another.
“The principle of separation of state and Church/Mosque which springs from the supposed secularity of the Nigerian constitution would be severely battered if this bill is pursued in the way it is. Gov. el Rufai, who is quite dogged in the pursuit of anything, given this tool, would pursue ardently both what is good and what may be divisive. We therefore advise that Kaduna State rely on existing laws and existing state instruments of law enforcement, to maintain religious harmony in the state instead of reinventing the wheel.
“The majority of Kaduna people appear not to want this law, and their wishes should be respected, as no governor is an emperor but an elected official who should defer to the people’s will. The people’s will is sovereign; because of the potential abuses this bill could bring when it becomes law, we opine that it is not necessary.
” On the last National Conference, the Catholic Church called on President Muhammadu Buhari to revisit the report and institute measures which should stand Nigeria on the pillar of justice and peace, arguing that “Niger-ian citizens should continue to engage political and state structures to become institutions which are guided by the rule of law.
“Presently, our constitution is like a hermaphrodite, neither completely secular nor religious. A secular constitution guarantees the rights and dignity of all under the law,” the Church said.
In a similar development, the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins also frowned at the legislation, arguing that the Nigerian Constitution makes pro-vision for freedom of worship.
Speaking during a Chrism Mass at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos, Martins stressed that any law that will restrict freedom of worship, should certainly not see the light of the day.
“I hope the governor will seriously listen to what the people are saying because democracy is about the people and the good of the people. There may be good intentions behind the law but it is important that in making laws for the people, the laws can only be effective and just if the people have an input.”
Calling on government to take the welfare of Nigerians more seriously by enacting policies that will benefit the general populace, Martins lamented that Nigerians are facing numerous challenges which, according to him, is very worrisome.
“The government should take the welfare of the people more seriously; there is a lot of suffering, poverty, pro-blems among the people. Government should put in place policies that will indeed help ordinary citizens feel a sense of belonging in the nation,” the archbishop appealed.
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/04/controversial-religious-bill-catholic-church-cautions-el-rufai/ Religious bill NOT Christians bill. I think its fare if extended to all religion. I dont know why people like to cry and complain for everything. Im cool with it as long as it applies to Muslims and other religions. Nigerians abuse religion. The way Nigerians play their religion is totally different from how others do it. |
