A man has been jailed in Abuja for killing a cow that strayed on his land. Meanwhile Fulani herdsmen who kill others and take their land go free. Ten steps forward, twenty steps back. That is the story of Nigeria. Meanwhile, the whole world is moving forward.

A new report claims that Tacha, ex-BB Naija housemate has not been signed as brand ambassador for Ciroc Vodka.

Fans of Tacha should stop jubilating over the deal because Ciroc Vodka says they’ve not endorsed or signed her as it happens to be all over in the media.

When you check on the official Instagram page of Ciroc Vodka, there is nothing showing that they’ve signed or endorsed Tacha.

Apparently, someone contacted a friend who works at Ciroc Vodka who denied that Tacha has been signed by the company.

Music/Radio / Re: Why Angelique Kidjo Is Burna Boy’s Biggest Threat In Grammy Awards Category by BlackBovi: 2:42pm On Nov 21, 2019
LifestyleTonite:
The news currently getting Nigeria News excited is the Grammy Awards nomination of African Giant album by Burna Boy.

Burna Boy got nominated for Best World Music Album.

Best World Music Album:

Gece — Altin Gün
What Heat — Bokanté & Metropole Orkest Conducted By Jules Buckley
African Giant — Burna Boy
Fanm D’ayiti — Nathalie Joachim With Spektral Quartet
Celia — Angelique Kidjo

While many Nigerians believe he would bring the award home, no one seems to be taking into consideration the competition against him.

Right about now, his biggest competition from Africa is Angelique Kidjo who has been nominated nine times and won 3 times.

Two out of the three awards she has won came from the Best World Music Album category, while the third award was gotten from the Best Contemporary World Music Album category.

Asides the fact that she has won the award three times, Angelique Kidjo has had a successful year in music. She has shut down many top European and American concert arenas with awesome live performances.

Some of the concert arenas she shut down this year:

Royal Albert Hall

Elbphilharmonie in Hambourg

Auditorium Parco della Musica – Roma

Villa Arconati – Milano

Carrington at Kongsberg jazz festival, Norway

Her concert schedule sees her preparing to perform in more Naija top European and American auditoriums. With all these, it is quite clear that it won’t be a walk in the park for Burna Boy.

Below are pictures from her concerts as found on her Instagram Page .

Politics / Re: Olimpotic Meristemasis: Ayade Presents 1.1trn Budget Estimate For 2020 by BlackBovi: 2:41pm On Nov 21, 2019
Barondenigeria:
By Ike Uchechukwu

Cross River state governor, Prof Ben Ayade has presented the 2020 budget estimate of 1.1trillion naira tagged budget of “Olimpotic Meristemasis” to the State House of Assembly Naija.
Ayade has also abolished payment of tax by small scale entrepreneurs like barbing saloon, welders, stylists amongst others.
According to him, he would rather tax his brain than tax the people, so no more daily payment of N500 by Okada riders and taxis but they will now pay 1000 and 2000 monthly for Okada and taxis respectively adding that all civil servants whose salaries were below 100,000 naira were also exempted from paying tax.

Nigeria News

Presenting the budget on Thursday on the floor of the State House of Assembly, Ayade said all low income earning people in the state were hereby exempted from taxes including civil servants whose salaries were less than 100,000 naira as well as stylish, saloon operators, welders and more.
His words: “All low-income earners are hereby exempted from taxes, including civil servants who salaries are below 100,000 nairas.

“The budget is an audacious step towards reducing recurrent expenditure and focus on increasing capital expenditure with Capital expenditure standing at 911 billion while recurrent stands at 188 billion which is 82.8% and 17.2 % respectively.
“Nigerians must realise that any state whose budget is driven by the envelop size has limited vision. There are two ways budgets are derived in business or public sector management, it is either as an expression of ambition or an expression of your envelope size.

“The expression of the ambition of the progressive agenda set for Cross River does not allow me the agony to adopt an envelope size budget. The value of our projects have not been commoditised into value , with the intellectual capacity we have reduced a lot of waste,” he said.

Sports / Re: Ahmed Musa To Sponsor 100 Students To Study In University by BlackBovi: 2:41pm On Nov 21, 2019
odun360:
Captain of the senior national team of Nigeria News Ahmed Musa has decided to pay the tuition fee of hundred students at Skyline University Kano after he was named as ambassador to the university.

The 26 year old became the first sportsman to be named an ambassador by the school based in the state where he made his mark ‎as a teenager playing for Nigeria Professional Football League ( NPFL) side Kano Pillars.

In reaction to the gesture by the school, Musa announced on his instagram handle that he will be sponsoring hundred students to school in the institution as a believer in the importance of education in rebuilding Naija.

" I am a great believer in the importance of education hence my excitement in joining this great team to promote the vision of becoming anything you want to be in life as long as you can dream it", he posted on Instagram.

" So, I am pleased to let you know that I would be sponsoring 100 students at this university (Skyline University). Yes! 100. Details to follow shortly ", he concluded in the post written on Wednesday evening.

The cost of sponsoring a student till graduation at the school is worth 5 million Naira in tuition fee and Musa plans to bear the cost of it all for a hundred students as his way of giving back to the society.

Already he is involved in several charity works, one of which is the popular sharing of food items, cash and provision of free medical services whenever he is in Nigeria for holidays. A practice he started since he was with Russian side CSKA Moscow.

Now playing for Saudi Arabia side Al-Nassr, Musa reportedly earns $270,000‎ a week, a huge increase from what he was earning at English Premier League side Leicester City and also makes him the highest earning Nigerian footballer.

So far he hasn't enjoyed the best of season in Saudi Arabia with injuries limiting to just few games, and that has also cost him his spot in the senior national team of Nigeria as he began his role as substantive captain of the team by sitting on the bench in the last two games of the team.

Musa played as a substitute in the 2-1 win over Benin Republic and also in the 4-2 win over Lesotho in the recent AFCON 2021 Qualifiers but according to coach Gernot Rohr is largely due to the fact that he is just returning from injury.

In Musa's absence the trio of Samuel Chukwueze, Samuel Kalu and Victor Osimhen have form a deadly combination in attack that produced four of the six goals Nigeria scored in their last two games. Moses Simon has also impressed when played in place of the three players mentioned above. Despite that Rohr insist that Musa's spot in the team is not under threat.

" He (Musa) is our captain so we have to treat him as the leader. He is not at the best level to start games but everybody knows his quality and what he brings to the team. We are hopeful that very soon he will reach full fitness and play a role in helping us achieve our set targets for the year", Rohr said.

Education / Re: Reps Call For Abolishment Of ‘Acceptance Fee’ Into Tertiary Institutions by BlackBovi: 2:38pm On Nov 21, 2019
chibaby1985:

The House of Representatives on Wednesday called for the abolishment of ‘acceptance fees’ paid by students offered admission into various institutions in Nigeria.

A motion moved by Emeka Chinedu, PDP-Imo (Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency), Wednesday got the lawmakers debating about how to reverse this trend.

Leading the debate, Mr Chinedu said one of the factors contributing to poor access to tertiary education is the “predatory admission policies being enforced by tertiary institutions, particularly the requirement for payment of non-refundable acceptance fees as a condition precedent for admission”.

He added that “it should bother the lawmakers that his state’s State University charges N70,000 as acceptance fee.”

“Other institutions like the University of Ibadan charge 35,000; University of Lagos, 20,000; Ahmadu Bello University, 30,000; Lagos State University, N20,000; University of Uyo, 25,000,” he said.

He, therefore, moved that the fee be abolished. He was unanimously backed by his colleagues.

Resolution

The House also mandated the House Committee on Tertiary Education and Services “to investigate the admission policies and practices of tertiary institutions in the country as they relate to the charge of acceptance fees in order to remove all obstacles to accessing tertiary education in the country.”

Meanwhile, Idowu Olayinka, vice chancellor of the University of Ibadan, has said his institution will comply with the directive.

He said the amount accruing to the University of Ibadan, for instance, in a year is not enough to fund the university in a month. “Therefore, the school has to look for alternative means to source for funds”.

“Someone has to take up the bill,” he said. “We have to make up our mind on what we really want. You can’t even run a creche without funds. In a year, we spend at least N200 million on our clinic contactors. Add this to electricity bill and diesel, then you’re talking of over N800 million.

“What the university is getting for overhead is less than N100 million. So where do you think the remaining N700 million will come from? Unless you want to close down the whole university,” he added.

victorava:
Hello Nairalanders

Two weeks back, my friend was apprehended by DSS officers from his residence in Lagos state and we have not heard from him.

I was driving out with him, immediately they saw us, they surrounded us and started asking questions. We now discovered that it was my friend that they were looking for. They collected his phones and followed him to his room to change his clothes. When I asked them what his offense was, they told me that they would like to ask him one or two questions.

They told me to meet them at their office and when I got there, I was not allowed access to their office. The officer at the gate told me that there was no such arrest. It was on Friday. I went there on Monday together with his wife and brother which was the following week, we were still denied access. They officer at the gate told us that if he's truly here that nothing will happen to him. He told us that anyone who is apprehended is not allowed to see anybody until after investigation.

We paid a Lawyer to go there the following day and the Lawyer eventually gained access, he was told that my friend was taken to Abuja the following day they arrested him.

We contacted a Lawyer in Abuja to go there and he was not allowed to see my friend. They told him to submit an application that they would get back to him. After few days, they did not contact him. He decided to go there this week and was denied access.

My friend has a wife and two kids, the wife has not been herself since this incident happened. She's been traumatized. She just wants to be sure if her husband is truly there.

Please Nairalander, I need your advice on the necessary steps I should take to be able to see my friend. Sorry for the long write up.

Admin please help me move this to front page, it is very urgent.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has commiserated with traders affected by a fire outbreak at the Super Plaza in Surulere, Lagos.

The mall on Akerele Street was gutted by fire on Wednesday.

In a message posted on social media, the politician who represents Surulere 1 Constituency in the National Assembly wrote: “My thoughts and prayers are with traders in Surulere Plaza, Akerele in my constituency over the fire outbreak that gutted the complex this evening.”

The building formerly known as Super Cinema houses many shops and churches including Fountain Hall, Dominion City Worship and Omega Fire Ministries.

Director-General of Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said preliminary investigation conducted on site indicated that the fire resulted from an electrical surge in one of the shops before escalating to other parts of the plaza.

“No loss of life nor injury has been sustained so far at the scene of the fire where properties worth a fortune have been lost to the inferno,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

Politics / Re: Pressure Mounts On Secondus To Resign by BlackBovi: 2:31pm On Nov 21, 2019
agwom:
National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Prince Uche Secondus is under intense pressure to vacate office over alleged constitutional breaches, misappropriation of funds and failure to lead the party to victory in the 2015 and 2019 general elections. Secondus has also allegedly failed to call for major meetings of the various organs of the party including the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which is the second highest decision-making organ of the party.

Daily Trust reports that the pressure is coming from PDP leaders and groups within the party. A former Special Adviser on Public Affairs, to President Goodluck Jonathan and member of the defunct Presidential Campaign Council for Atiku Abubakar, Malam Nasir Zahradeen, confirmed to our correspondent last night that majority of PDP stalwarts and power brokers were demanding for Secondus’ resignation.

“Secondus must go and he must be investigated by the EFCC, ICPC and the SSS because of the alleged impropriety, alleged putting of his hands on the funds of the party which is unacceptable. “You cannot say whether the other members of the NWC are doing well or they are not doing well. But if the head is rotten, definitely, you don’t expect any action from the rest.

“Now we have lost the Kogi and Bayelsa elections. On Bayelsa, he (Secondus) connived with the governor. Apparently, the governor had his own idea of getting his kinsman to be the governor while he will get the senatorial seat,” he said. Similarly, a highly placed source from the North West, who sought not to be named, passed a vote of no confidence on Secondus, saying he cannot guarantee victory for the party any more.

“We all had confidence in Secondus when he emerged. But later we discovered there were issues that we did not envisage. The leadership of Prince Secondus has several lapses and breaches of the constitution of the PDP. “For instance, from the very time we lost the 2019 elections, I doubt if there has been any NEC or caucus meeting to discuss the issues and that is weighing us down. “If they can’t deliver us today, how can we be sure they will deliver us tomorrow? Actually, I cannot ask the other members of the NWC to resign but sincerely, Secondus should resign because I doubt if he is willing to get us to the Promised Land.

He should resign,” he said. But the Special Adviser on Media to Secondus, Mr. Ike Abonyi, dismissed the allegations in a telephone chat with our correspondent, saying the party had more serious issues to discuss on the threat to democracy. “The allegations are baseless and unsubstantiated. Let them provide evidence that Secondus is a thief; that he dipped his hands into the party’s funds. “The constitution says one NEC meeting to one quarter. And between February and now, he called NEC meetings three times. So he has not violated the PDP Constitution,” he said.

Spokesperson of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan also dispelled claims that Secondus was under pressure to vacate office. “The National Chairman is not under any pressure except the fact that we believe that democracy is gradually being killed by this government and we believe that as the main opposition party we have a responsibility to salvage democracy,” he said.

By Richard P. Ngbokai

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) Kano office has sealed-off two facilities over illegal processing of substance suspected to be petroleum products.

The two illegal refineries were discovered in two communities on the outskirts of Kano metropolis along Laraba Abasawa road in Gezawa Local Government Area of the state.

They were discovered via intelligence gathering by the DPR in collaboration with operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Kano State command.

The Operations Controller, DPR Kano and Jigawa field office, Alhaji Musa Zarumi Tambawal, who led an enforcement team to seal the facilities, said analysis is on going to ascertain what is being produced at the refineries.

Speaking at one of the illegal petroleum processing site, Tambawal said, “this is one of the discoveries made by the DPR and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps , as part of illegal petroleum product processing zones or locations. If you look at it, you cannot say whether it is a mini-refinery, depot or whatever, from mere looking, you can see that there are tanks and everywhere is littered with oil that could be LPFO, HPFO or AGO’’.

He said the facilities would remain sealed until DPR concludes its investigations. The operators of the two facilities had fled before the DPR team and NSCDC operatives got to the locations.

In a related development, two other facilities dealing in illegal storage and sale of diesel (AGO) were sealed by DPR for violating safety standards and operating without valid licenses at Hotoro and Yankaba area of the state capital respectively.

More than 10 workers of the two outlets were arrested and are currently undergoing interrogation.

The Director General of NIPSS, Prof. Habu Galadima in a press conference at the National Institute in Kuru, near Jos said 66 participants from this year’s course would submit their report to the President in Council on Friday, hoping that many of the recommendations contained in the report will be favourable to the government for implementation. Prof. Galadima said the participants who are expected to graduate on Saturday will on Thursday commission projects provided to the Kuru community which include upgraded facilities in the primary health care unit.

He said the participants have visited 12 states in Nigeria and interacted with major stakeholders in those states where they were privy to ideas of the funding challenges for the health sector as well as undertook a study tour of African countries such as Egypt, Madagascar, Kenya, South Africa, as well as Mauritius and Morocco

“They interacted with experts and learnt from their experiences in funding universal health care and the true lessons from the experiences of those countries that have enriched their recommendations. They also undertook a study tour of Singapore, Pakistan, which has similar culture and tradition with Nigeria in some areas, they also went to Cuba, a country with one of the best health systems and observed how they fund their own health systems.

They also went to the UAE and Jordan and all these experiences were brought back and integrated to enrich their recommendations, ” he said. The DG explained that an annual lecture on Funding Universal Health Care Delivery: Lessons from Trinidad and Tobago will be delivered by the High Commissioner of Trinidad and Tobago to Nigeria, Mr. Wendel De Landro on Saturday. He said in its 40 years, the Institute has impacted on policy process and implementation as well as policy advice and laudable recommendations many of which have been implemented.

“The National Security Strategy, NIPSS played a crucial role in the development of that document in 2014. The Institute also played a major role in the establishment of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), it was one of the recommendations of the National Institute. I’m sure you also known about the national amnesty programme. There are quite a number of policy advices that we are involved in,” he said.

Health / Re: Burning/Burying Of Placenta: Right Or Wrong Action? by BlackBovi: 2:20pm On Nov 21, 2019
Omonigeriarere:
I know cultures differ about the subject matter. But is there any conventional way of handling placenta? Is there any repercussion that follows outright burning or burying it?

Most cultures prefer burying it while others prefer burning. I latter realised that some White's cultures even tolerate eating it up as it is very nutritional.

Please express your empirical view/thinking here and let'slearn together .

Watching out for verifiable responses from 'experienced father's/mothers all the way from the apex part of Okro tree where I am enjoying myself here.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) wednesday rejected the proposed death penalty for hate speech in the bill at the National Assembly.

The governors also resolved to conclude negotiations with labour unions on the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage before the December 31 deadline.

The governors spoke to journalists last night at the end of their seventh meeting in Abuja, which was presided over by the Vice Chiarman of the NGF and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal.

Tambuwal urged the National Assembly to conduct a public hearing on the hate speech bill to aggregate the views of Nigerians.

“I’m not sure I have heard any governor come out to say he is in support of the death penalty for hate speech.

“I believe that the National Assembly should hold a public hearing on that bill, so that due process of lawmaking is followed.

“This is so that the views of Nigerians, not just the governors, will be well captured on that bill and they (National Assembly) should respect the views of Nigerians in whatever may be the direction of debate and the eventual passage or otherwise of that bill.”

Tambuwal pledged the commitment of states to the implementation of the minimum wage and improved welfare of workers.

“Before December, all the states must have finished working out the details on the issue of the minimum wage across the federation.

At the meeting, the governors committed to working with the Independent Verification Agent to ensure that the APA process did not experience delay.

The forum, among other resolutions, also expressed commitment to the initiative to advance value added activities in agriculture, access to finance and women economic development.

Politics / Re: APC Asks Security Agencies To Investigate Seyi Makinde’s Role In Kogi Election by BlackBovi: 1:54pm On Nov 21, 2019
MisterGrace:

In what seemed to be a new twist, the Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) , the Nigeria Police, as well as other security agencies to launch a thorough probe into the roles played by Governor Seyi Makinde before, during and after the last Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Kogi State.

APC stated that this will help to unravel the real culprits of the series of violence which were reported in the exercise.

Recall that Gov. Makinde was attacked in Lokoja the Kogi State capital on the eve of the election by some hoodlums.

The APC made it known that it was seriously worried by the cases of violence reported in parts of Kogi on the course of determining who would govern the Confluence State in the next four years.

Makinde should also be investigated by the EFCC over the government money spent on the ill-fated project, the APC said.

The party in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday said, “As reactions follow allegations ad counter allegations of election violence sponsorship among political gladiators in Kogi state over the conduct of the last Saturday gubernatorial and Kogi West Senatorial re-run elections, we stand to condemn every act osaf violence, incitement and vote buying which might have been recorded. The fact remains that no life of any individual is worth the votes being sought at polls by politicians.

“In the case of Kogi, among those to be investigated is Gov. Seyi Makinde who was on a desperate mission to influence the emergence of the PDP candidates in persons of Sen. Dino Melaye and Mr. Musa Wada. The Oyo state governor’s clandestine hatchet job in Kogi was blown few hours to the polls when a team of security agents had to burst into a hide out where some disgruntled elements had gathered to plan evil ahead of the elections.

“Immediately this happened, Gov. Makinde raised the alarm that he was attacked in a hotel. The same governor commissioned his media handlers, he deliberately left in Ibadan, to twist the story and thus mislead the public. The truth of the matter is that he (Makinde) was the one who assembled vote buyers, miscreants and other shady characters for the purpose of giving out briefs and incentive to all those contracted for some evil plots. Sources have it that the exercise later took place in another location where cash running into billions of naira, taken from Oyo State treasury, was doled out.

“This was to be corroborated by the innocent revelation made by a popular socialite who has always been on hand as a mercenary to the PDP in the South West since the days of Aregbesola vs Oyinlola imbroglio in the State of Osun. The video clip of the mindless confession which apparently indicted Gov. Makinde is currently available on virtually all social media platforms.

“Without mincing words, keen watchers have come to realize that Makinde’s political history cannot be said to be free from damning evidence of violence sponsorship, financial inducements and propaganda. Back home, he is now in a dilemma as to how to fulfill all the promises made to a known criminal element and his army of urchins who he used to hijack the mandate which he is enjoying at the moment”.
