I still want to format my notebook and install some ubuntu on it really. But I am worried if something will not work here anyway. I usually get support on their official forums and from what I have seen Linux become really something good in the past 5 years or so.

You can always install ubuntu in a vm, at least that way if it doesn't work your main OS is still ok

Seeing the title of this thread, I'll love to ask this.

Android OS update in Nigeria, are they pushed by Telcos or the Phone Makers?

I'm wanting to update to Android Pie, but its not been officially pushed to my device which is why I asked the question.

The phone makers. However, they have different release cycles for different regions.
Is Pie officially out for your phone model? How often do you receive security updates? If it's regular, say quarterly or more often i'm pretty sure you will get pie if it's out for your phone.
That said if you can get an update for your phone that is already available, I don't think installing manually will spoil anything

Please advice me on which one is better between Nokia 2.1,tecno spark and itel s33
Price and specs

On paper, they have similar specs, although the Itel and Nokia run android go which is better for phones with 1gb ram.
Both the Itel and the Tecno have 16gb internal storage while the Nokia has 8

On Jumia the Itel is the cheapest, but if you have enough money to buy the Nokia or the Tecno, there are some phones on sale now on Jumia that you can get for the same price

Hey guys. Please my phone developed a problem where it gets stuck at the loading screen. That is, whenever I switch it on, it doesn't go to the home screen, it just stays stuck on the loading screen. So the phone repairer suggested that I flash the phone. Now the problem is that I have very important files on the phone and can't afford to lose them. So please is there anyway I can access, transfer or retrieve my files from the phone while it's still on the loading screen?

You know you haven't told us anything about the phone : make, Android version, etc.
But unless you saved stuff on your memory card, I'm afraid you will probably lose your stuff

Hello House. Don't know what's wrong with my phone whenever it gets to 76%, it will stop charging no matter how long it's connected to the power source. It wasn't like this before. Is there anything I can do about it?

Try using a battery calibration app to recalibrate your battery, that might fix it

Uhmm. You don't need the windows exe to use a modem on any Linux distro.

Have you checked the Simple Network Manager app on Puppy? There's a section for dial up modems

All you need to do is setup the parameters.

The dial up number is *99#

Tomorrow I'll post screenshots of it to you. Unfortunately I no longer have or use dial up modems. But when we used to years ago this was no big deal.

Matter of fact if you search this thread you should see examples using Ubuntu network manager.

Dial up modems!!!
I'm sure he doesn't need to use wvdial anymore, the network manager handles things pretty well

How do I get and use the wine? Successfully installed Ubuntu last night on my desktop

type: apt-cache search wine

find the name of the wine package then type: apt-get install <wine package name>

or just type wine in the terminal, you will be given prompts about what you can do to get wine if it's not already installed

The main advantage of manjaro is the rolling release model (since it is based on archlinux) You do not get point releases like you do with Ubuntu and fedora, rather the system is always updated to the latest version of the software available through a continuous update model otherwise called rolling release. The downside is such a model is very prone to breakage. It is not uncommon for update to disable wireless or even break X. It is meant for people with about average or above average linux skill and not recommend for production or never fail kind of setup. If you want light weight, Xubuntu or LInux Mint xfce are a good mix between light weight, functionality and stability. If you are an ijebu man then you can try lubuntu based on the LxQt Desktop environment.

The last time I tried a rolling release: Arch Linux, which I admit is quite a hile ago, I kept having issues: installing one package will break anoher etc. I don't think I've ever had so many issues with any other distro. What probably made it worse was that the default install wasn't necessarily up to date.
I would like to believe they've gotten better, I also hope that Manjaro doesn't have those issues, but i'm not as adventurous as I used to be. For the most part I just stick to ubuntu mate/xubuntu/linux mint mate/linux mint cinnamon

Is ubuntu mate lightweight cause i also want to change from Ubuntu 18.04 am thinking if i should choose Mate or Manjaro?

It's lighter, if not as light as xubuntu. Think gnome 2 with gnome 3 libraries. That's what mate is.

Ive never used Manjaro so I can't tell you anyting about it, although I hear it's very popular now. You can try it out though

Thanks boss. Please how can I run a lighter version of ubuntu? I am using the one I downloaded directly on ubuntu website. How can I get the Xubuntu or the Kubuntu.

Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Go to kubuntu.org or xubuntu.org or you can get Ubuntu mate from ubuntu-mate.org

It's quie ok, and it looks more like Microsoft office than libreoffice

I think Gimp and Libre office replaced those software on Linux or you could try to use WINE to run the .exe

Wps office is another alternative to Microsoft office on both Linux and windows

These days I do KDE Neon on my personal laptop, and Lubuntu 18.10 on all the systems in my office. You should try it. The move to LXQt by Lubuntu was really good. We have no need to change the office systems.

Hmm, I should try it then

Recently decided to try things out in gtk land after a long absence. Utterly disappointed. Gnome 3 is a big pile of poo. It is heavy using almost 5g of ram with just file Firefox (with one tap open) and slow as sin. It is sad what default Ubuntu has become.. I had to remove it and install unity back before sanity prevailed on the machine. Gnome 2 was one of the best desktop GUI ever made. What they did to it in vain pursuit of mobile is sad and a cautionary tale.

I wonder how people use gnome 3. But is unity still in use? I stick with mate myself
Phones / Re: 10 Phones With 5000mah Battery Capacity In Nigeria by blackweaver(m): 9:20am On Oct 03, 2018
The information on this list is not complete. You can't state the price without telling us places where you can get those phones at those prices.

By the way, unless you're on a tight budget, don't bother with any of the 420p or 720p phones - or unless you're not interested in that kind of thing. That said, lower resolution phones probably have longer battery life. Also 1gb/2gb ram phones are so not it in this day and age. 3gb should be the minimum for any serious phone lover (barring the budget constraint mentioned before)

I have dual boot of windows 8 and kali linux on my system. I want to remove the window 8 and install window 10, Please how can i go about that without altering the kali linux.

Once you upgrade, you won't be able to see your linux boot.
What happens is that after you install windows, the Master Boot Record is overwritten by windows, although your linux is still present in its partition.
What I would advise you to do is first make a linux bootable cd or usb, then upgrade your windows. Afterwards boot with your bootable disk and install grub on your mbr.

Check this link for instance:

Morning guys pls i need to make a choice btw Samsung j7 neo and Nokia 5...which should i pick based on all round performance.

Which Nokia 5? Last year or this? If it's this year (5.1) I would say go for the Nokia.
If last year, I would say it depends on what is most important to you. I have the Nokia 5 (last year).
Pros:
prompt android updates, I've been on android 8.1 since early this year, I expect that android P will be released before the year runs out
better build quality. it feels like a well built phone

cons:
The camera doesn't do so well in low light.
If you like rooting, it's hard to unlock your bootloader

If you prefers stock android, you would probably prefer the Nokia, however if you are a fan of Samsung, just stick with what you know.

I don't know which has the better battery, although the Nokia's own is pretty ok, and it has some form of fast charge.

My advice, before you buy a phone -especially when it's a brand that you're not familiar with, read reviews about it so you don't get bitten again
