Opistorincos: That's surprising, your cpu specs should be able to handle almost anything thrown at it (unless you're trying to run a high end console emulator). Anyway you can still try installing mate or cinnamon and use that as a window manager instead. I'm not a fan of gnome3 myself and don't use it, so I don't know about any issues with it |

Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 4:54pm On Dec 13, 2017 |
Opistorincos: What is the specs of your pc? Ram? CPU? How much free disk space do you have? Your pc performance is dependent on this. If your cpu is a celeron or an atom or your ram is less than 3gb, install xfce or mate as window manager instead of using gnome3 |
Phones / Re: That Awkward Moment Your Phone Is Faster Than Your Laptop! by blackweaver(m): 4:51pm On Dec 13, 2017 |
EvilMetahuman: Well be that as it may, the fact still remains that while I do admit that there are some pc cpu tasks that your mobile cpu can handle, the raspberry pi and similar mini pcs are a testament to that, there are also tasks that your mobile pcs either can't handle or handle frustratingly slow. By the way i did mention the reason reason why phone cpus haven't attained the clock speeds of pc cpus, and it wasn't because the phone manufacturers are holding it back, it's because of power and heat management. You put the average pc cpu in your phone and if you don't burn the board, you'll probably run down your battery in one-third the time it would last with the normal phone cpu. You think your mediatek cpus are hot? At least they don't need heatsinks. Believe me, the day a phone manufacturer gets a 10ghz cpu that will consume as little battery as the average mobile cpu without generating much heat, they will release it and brag about how superior their phone is to other manufacturers' phones 1 Like |

EvilMetahuman: Hmm, you're not really a techie are you? I will tell you why mobile processors aren't in the same league with PC processors, why even laptop processors aren't in the same league with desktop processors: the reason is power management. There is no phone processor - not even the new snapdragon cpu - that is on the same level with your average core I3 yet, much less an I7 when it comes to computing power simply because of this: your phone is expected to last a day, most laptops don't go beyond 4 hours of continuous use, while desktops are always powered on. Laptop CPUs are generally more energy efficient than desktop ones and therefore a desktop of the same price as a laptop would usually have a more powerful CPU. There is a reason why intel CPUs don't do well on phones. Don't take my word for it, you can check https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html for cpu benchmark comparisons. Note where the snapdragon processors start from I decided to look up reviews on one of those laptops that run snapdragon cpus. Here's a link: https://www.cnet.com/products/hp-envy-x2-series/review/ scroll down to the performance section and you see that even they don't rate it anywhere in the league of the core i3 cpu 1 Like |

Tinaslim: Ok have you bought anything from Konga before? Are you in Lagos? I can see a Tecno spark k7 listed on their website for around that price. On the Slot website, I can see a gionee p5 mini also around that price. You can get a samsung J1 prime mini for 26k If you can, I would say go for the tecno spark K7 1 Like |

Tinaslim: Oh ok. Personally i'm not a fan of used phones, but whatever rocks your boat. How much are you getting it for? Maybe I can recommend another phone. One other thing, how old is your sister? I personally think she would prefer the iphone if the choice is strictly between the two phones |
Phones / Re: Android, Anyone? Part II by blackweaver(m): 4:19pm On Dec 11, 2017 |
Tinaslim: Well this is an android group. Are both phones brand new? Why is the choice between those 2 phones? On Konga an Iphone 4s is about 70k You can get a 3gb infinix note4 for that price and still have change. Before I can give you informed advice, I need to know your budget. Also this kid sis of yours, is she an apple fan or she will take whatever phone she can get? Also, are you resident in Lagos? If not which state? |
Romance / Re: Help! I Am In Love With Her Man. by blackweaver(m): 3:22pm On Dec 11, 2017 |
The truth is that it's easy to develop feelings for someone if you hang around long enough with the person. Like Beinmon has said, your best bet is to maintain a distance with him. That is the right thing to do, regardless of how you're feeling. 1 Like |

Sorry about your situation. I'm guessing it was one of those phones shipped from overseas. Personally I try to avoid such phones; and with a brand called homtom, I will do my research : search online for specs and reviews on the phone before even looking at buying it. |

Opistorincos: Recommendation of what? You already said you want to try out Ubuntu. Before we can make any recommendations, you have to give us more details, else I would say just try Ubuntu out, it really doesn't matter. Conversely you can try linux mint, they are essentially the same with some differences. The main difference you would notice is that they have different default window managers |

Sunkyphil: I thought that might be possible. Some of these oems have proprietary cables that only do fast charging on their cables and not on any others, you could try checking jumia/ konga or go to any phone shop to check if the have the cable for that model of phone |
Phones / Re: Android, Anyone? Part II by blackweaver(m): 10:44pm On Nov 20, 2017 |
Sunkyphil: What is the model of your phone? Can you get the USB that came with another phone of the same model? Also try charging when the phone is of. Does it charge faster? Is the battery removable? If so, try replacing it |

Sapiosexuality: don't buy on e street, buy in a credible looking shop. Unfortunately even there you might still buy a poor quality one. I once bought 2 memory cards from slot, one didn't last 48hours while I used the other for years |

Justiceotuya: I don't think the official release of 17.10 is out yet, it should come out later this month. The update manager should prompt you about the update when it's available The decision to use another distro is based on preference. Debian -based distros like Debian, Ubuntu, Linux mint etc are similar and to a large extent binary compatible, same thing for redhat based distros like redhat, Fedora, centos etc. Each distro has its philosophy and you might have to try out a few to discover which one you like best. You can check distrowatch.com for more information 2 Likes |

Romeo386: on your bootable flash, see if you can install testdisk or photorec. You will probably need an external harddrive to recover to |

Romeo386: I really hope not. I actually don't like following instructions in videos, i prefer reading them, so coming back to a point is pretty straightforward. Wow, i'm just looking at the video and that is not a method I would use to install linux mint. I hope you chose the install mind alongside windows option because if you use the erase disk option, you WILL lose your data. |

Romeo386: Oh you have mate? don't worry about xfce. Don't worry after installation you're good to go. I'm guessing you're using a live boot at the moment. That's fine until you're sure you want to install on your harddrive |

Romeo386: sorry i've been out of contact for a while. Have you been able to install mint? While 2gb should be able to install kde and all its packages, you might not have much data left on your phone. You don't need format your flash per se, if the flash needs to be formatted, the boot disk maker will format it for you. 30gb space should be more than enough for you, i've installed linux on a 10gb partition without much issues |
Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 1:29pm On Aug 28, 2017 |
Romeo386: You don't need internet connection to install, though you might want to use it to enable mp3 support. Alternatively you can install and later download the packages for mp3 support, although mint xfce comes with vlc which can play mp3 files without need to download other files. You can download linux mint apps using synaptic package manager. It's sort of like an app store. Mint is based on ubuntu which is based on debian, the program extension is .deb. If you want to install kde, you better be using wifi or have a lot of data. While linux mint comes with libreoffice, you might want to use wps office instead http://wps-community.org/downloads it's more like microsoft office. 1 Like |

Romeo386: Use gparted to create the partition, i believe the installer should come with gparted. Also, you WILL be able to access your music and files on your windows partition. If you can't, you probably didn't shutdown windows properly and will need to reboot to windows and shutdown/reboot. Hibernating won't work i'm afraid |
