Does anyone think if the tables were turned and westerners were the ones duping us, it would not be said that we are allowing ourselves to be defrauded cos we're stupid?
If the perpetrators were the westerners and Africans were falling victims, will the Africans not be prosecuted for trying to make money fraudulently as well?

Happens all the time in Scotland (where I live) & (Ireland, where my father is from) were traditionally the most 'important' families name will be taken.

i.e. A man named McLaughton marrying a women from the Gunn clan would have been expected to and would have wanted to take on the more wealth and powerful clan name .There by giving his children a better start in life. Has to be said though that this is not the reason it goes on now but it is the background.

Quite common now for a young married couple to take on a totally new family name.

If a man marries a women with no brothers and he (the man) has many I think it is a pure act of love to take on her family name so that the family name lives on and does not die. Although I think that it would be very hard for a man to do so in Nigeria, as we are not an open minded nation.
I see you're Scottish.

Pray, how many men in Scotland do you know who have taken their wives' names?

What exactly does America want to do on our soil? we are not a Nation that is constantly at war and so we dont need any bogus excuse for American military support.

May God destroy Yar A'dua and the National Assembly members if they sell us completely to America.

Ujujoan:
That’s the problem here. Why do we remain in this stage, because people like Toyin and her gang travel overseas and contribute nothing towards the growth of the Country. Instead they try to run it down. I can give you case studies of similar problems in developed countries and you’ll see how they overcome them. First you have to be willing to TRY, I can never be comfortable in a country where I know I can not run for any political office, if I want to, because I’m a foreigner, when I know the sky is my limit back home.

I agree with you its time we find a way, but how do you want to achieve that when people cannot even summon up an atom of respect for the country?
I understand your point. However, do you really think those who sincerely want to help move Nigeria forward will ever be allowed to do so?
Before I got annoyed and decided to move back here, I tried to help in my own little way to change the mindset of those around me and in my own local government because I knew that I commanded some respect there. We had an association and had lots of youngsters in support. I was not willing to join any political party and many people were unhappy because I was not throwing money around for these people. I had a few friends with me trying to just let the people see reasons why they should not support anyone who has a history of bad politics or maladministration.

Many people said it to my face that they'd rather support people who are spending money for them because thay was a sign that these people will spend more when they get into government. One known looter actually became the Local Govt Chairman for Ebute Metta in 1999. I made many friends who told me about the mentality of the average Nigerian having experienced similar things as I experienced. I dont see how anything can change until Nigerians themselves, in large masses, decide to change things.

I am not a foreigner here in the legal sense of it but I still sometimes feel that I'll be better back in Nigeria: just not wanting to go back and feel frustrated at seeing people suffering in the midst of so much.

i am very certain that the same people who run Nigeria down here have contributed to the present state of Nigeria.

what's all the noise about?

the first thing is to see what the Nigerian law says about incest and if he has fallen foul, he should be prosecuted. I believe the girl is of legal age. So the way to catch him out is if he has fallen foul of the law regarding incest or rape.

I dont think any sane man will do that anyway
PoliticsRe: How Come Its Only Nigerians Abroad That Are Complaining by Blatant: 12:18pm On Jun 02, 2008
I've read a number of posts here and i agree that we should be proferring solutions to the problems rather than using the identified problems to run the country down with our mouths and posts.

Why should we criticize the country if we have NOTHING to offer it except to make things worse by verbally running it down? Nigeria has massive problems BUT we should identify the problems and SINCERELY work towards solutions.

I dont agree with those who said developed Nations have also gone through this phase. We have been in this phase for too long considering all the potentials. We are not passing through this phase; we seem to be stuck in this bad phase. Time to find a way of passing through it.

However, one thing is clear: the state of health facilities in Nigeria leaves too much to be desired

Think of it,if Iraq had no WMDs there will be no rationale for maintaining a sanctions regime and support for it will collapse. Thus, the next logical step would have been to let Saddam loose and we are back to square one.

As for Maliki being installed,Maliki is part of a governing coalition that was duly elected in elections in which brave Iraqis came out to vote. For people who shed crocodile tears for Iraqi deaths, its ironic how people are dismissive of their wishes.
Where exactly are the WMD's? Or am I just to accept everything America says without proof but if any other person/group says something, we should always demand proof?

The Palestinians also elected their Government and what did America and Israel say about the ELECTED Palestinian govt?

All Nigerian male politicians are thieves, be they Yoruba, Hausa, Ibo, Edo, Ijaw, Calabar, Tiv, etc. What makes the difference is other Nigerian female versus Yoruba female politicians. Whereas Yoruba female politicians are mainly thieves, as we have starkly seen, their counterparts from other tribes are not. Even, Ita Giwa left Aso Rock recently, untainted wink.
What's this person doing on here?

I am sick of hearing Nigerians appeal to God when they constantly mess things up themselves. If a student wants to sit an exam without studying, he will fail and he should not ask God why he failed. He should ask himself why he did not prepare
PoliticsRe: US. Most Armed Country 90 Guns Per 100 People, Nigeria 1 Gun Per 100 People by Blatant: 10:04am On May 31, 2008
Why do people consistently try to draw parallels between Nigeria and the US? completely different countries people by humans with different mindsets and government by Governments with different priorities.

The fact that something is practiced in the US does not imply that it will be good for Nigeria.
