N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - Chad's army will no longer participate in military operations beyond its borders, President Idriss Deby said on Friday, a potential blow to international efforts to defeat Islamist militants in the conflict-hit Sahel and Lake Chad region.
Deby spoke during a visit to the Lake Chad zone in the west of the country to mark the end of an offensive against jihadist group Boko Haram, which carried out its deadliest-ever attack on the army in March, killing nearly 100 soldiers in an ambush.
On Thursday, the army said a further 52 soldiers had died in the 10-day counter-operation against Boko Haram, which it said had killed 1,000 of the militants and driven them from two island bases in the lake, which borders Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria.
"Chad has felt alone in the fight against Boko Haram since we launched this operation," Deby said in a speech broadcast on Friday.
"Our soldiers have died for Lake Chad and the Sahel. From today, no Chadian soldier will take part in an external military operation," he said.
It was not immediately clear how the decision would impact the anti-jihadist operations of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) comprised of troops from countries bordering Lake Chad. Its work had already been complicated by divisions and a lack of cooperation.
Chad's armed forces are among the most respected in the region, a reputation forged during decades of war and rebellions, and honed in a 2013 campaign against al Qaeda-linked Islamists in the deserts of northern Mali.
Its suspension of external military operations could also affect the France-backed G5 military force, which battles a growing Islamist militancy in the Sahel region with soldiers from Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad.
In recent years, militants linked to both al Qaeda and Islamic State have strengthened their foothold, making large swathes of territory ungovernable and stoking ethnic violence, especially in Mali and Burkina Faso.
This mumu is chronic liar that can only fool elementary school children. After he's caught he always braggs about some fictitious accomplishments. If you ask him about his imaginary patents the idiot will post a picture of his meal as proof.
Adamu also explained that the proposed facility from the World Bank would guarantee the provision of water supply to all nooks and crannies of the metropolis of the benefiting States for 24hours a day.
Lol there's no reason it shouldn't be 24/7. Even power outages aren't a good excuses if they build water towers. The water will run temporarily until the pump works again. If they're really planning on doing this they build pipes connecting homes to the utility. After that charge the customer for service.
The government needs to disclose which 5 or 6 states are going to be picked. The criteria on how their picked is also needs to be known. After that what are the plans for rest of the country.
“The Federal Government can support the states with up to 30percent investment for urban water schemes.
The minister further lamented that states government, over the years, have been paying lips service to the provision of water supply
Nigeria states have been lazy about this issue. Hopefully states with common sense partner with the FG to provide water. The sad part is the people dont even make this an election issue. Lol they'll watch their states build churches, mosques, stadiums never caring to expand public water utilities.
Case study: Akwa Ibom cut the water boards budget but found billions to build a church. It's amazing what's prioritized in Nigeria.
ABUJA – The Federal Government has announced that it had begun discussions with the World Bank to secure $700million facility for urban water supply. Engr. Suleiman Adamu, Minister of Water Resources, who stated this on a live radio programme monitored by DAILY INDEPENDENT in Abuja, said the facility would facilitate the provision of potable water supply to five or six states in their urban centres. Adamu also explained that the proposed facility from the World Bank would guarantee the provision of water supply to all nooks and crannies of the metropolis of the benefiting States for 24hours a day, He said the project would serve as a model for other states to invest in water supply.
The minister further lamented that states government, over the years, have been paying lips service to the provision of water supply, sanitation and hygiene to the citizenry. According to him, “For me, I have spent the last two weeks, since the pandemic started to manifest in Nigeria on lessons learnt from this pandemic. “Since I came to the office in 2015, we have stepped up our campaigns on sanitation, hygiene and water supply.
“I have been saying it, the states government, whose responsibility it is, to provide water to the people, have not been investing enough in water supply and sanitation. They have not. “This is a wake-up call to everyone. They should stop paying lips service to water and sanitation in Nigeria and just do the needful.
“Nigerians should be provided with adequate water supply wherever they are. “It is not only to contain COVID-19, which we hope, will be contained, but there are other diseases such as typhoid, cholera, that have been with us for a very long time. “We need to get states to invest more in water supply because it is their constitutional responsibility. “It is not the responsibility of the Federal Government to provide water on our taps.
“But the Federal Government supports the States. Since 2017, we have had a new budget line to support the states that are working on urban water schemes. “The Federal Government can support the states with up to 30percent investment for urban water schemes.“My experience in the last five years is that many states are paying lips service to water supply. They need to understand that it is so important. Water is the basic ingredient of life.
“It affects a lot of things such as health, education. Whatever you want to do outside hygiene, water is number one. But we have not been giving water the priority it deserves in this country.” He pointed out that water supply and sanitation in the country are already in the emergency situation, following the declaration of the state of emergency on the sector by President Muhammadu
Yenefer: This nairaland not dollarland take ur right wing conspiracy to fox news
Lol common sense is right wing? Oh well chinese propaganda works well on those who refuse to think. WHO recently accused Taiwan of spuring racism against chinese. Who's stupid enough to believe this. They're both Chinese racial group.
Yup the guy is puppet of the CCP. They exclude Taiwan despite the fact the handled the situation better and warned them 1st. The W.H.O are pretty useless ckaiming travel bans arent effective.
He, however, assured that there are plans to lay a legacy foundation for the immediate, medium and long-term development of the health system in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic across the country.
Lol you didn't know because you're probably traveling out for healthcare like our president. If you guys stepped out your ivory towers you notice things. If a global pandemic cant elitist change in policybnothing will.
GamalNasser: You don't even know what a virus is so I can't go on with this conversation
Lol says the clown who doesn't know 4th grade science. If you want to tell lies try to make them believable in the futue. You can't on the topic because you're a mumu who doesn't know the basics to begin with. You actually believe cellphone radiation caused the virus.
You're the same clown that believes any tabloid gossip you read online. It's the same reason you thought buhari was getting married at the national mosque. Nigeria elon musk cant be this gullible. Lol you're just the village clown with delusions of grandeur.
GamalNasser aka FarahAideed aka nairaland mumu
#nairalandliar #mumulies
FarahAideed: My innovations and patents in Nigeria alone is something , every year I create new industry out of nothing and by God grace I am Nigerias version of Elon Musk..Yes remember that ..working on two new innovations that will change the entire world this time buts it's unfortunate you will never know it's me
SarkinYarki: Look at this one that lives off politicians talking .. Do you know how many new innovations I have delivered in this country all from my brain ? Do you know how many patent I have ...I am not a loafer and free loader like You .I am Nigerias Elon Musk so put some respect on my name .
tony0806: When the license for 5G is granted to our telcos, I'll mention you. Even if it's in 5 years to come, if Christ tarries and He keeps us alive. I was trained not to insult fellow humans
Ridicule is the only way to break these clowns. He doesn't even understand the study he's citing. The funniest part is he didnt even know about electromagnetic spectrum while calling other people stupid. Tomorrow he'll tell you he's Nigeria's elon musk with dozens of patents.
GamalNasser: My patents , POCs , success and wealth are testaments to this ..You have never created anything original in your life I have created many and will still create more. #Africaselonmusk
proxillin: i will repeat it, you are a qualified idiot. IF you didnt read that article and see those scientific facts before commenting. People like you are heart-hardened like religious fanatics. a foolish human being
[/s]
Lol mumu you're repeating studies you dont understand. If you understood basic science you'd know the Wi-Fi signals opperate on radio to microwave electromagnetic spectrum. Human have been sitting next to Wi-Fi for decades with minimal issues. It's hilarious how you weirdos watch a few youtube videos then panic.
proxillin: the mumu go post electromagnetic spectrum range. you can see the knowledgables..lolz
Lol you're the idiot who believes Corona virus was caused by cellphone radiation. Anyone with common sense already knows this dumb on it's face. There's more obvious causes to this pandemic being disgusting chinese wet markets. Even if you want to go the conspiratorial route the biolab in wuhan would be more reasonable guess.
What's funnier is you clowns act like this is the 1st plague coming from China. Did you forget SARS and Bird flu also orignated from China? Both came before 5G tech existed. You paranoid weirdos need to stop your nonsense.
BrodaZakius: This man show APC pepper during last Election pointing out the fraud that has gone on for over 10 years the Lagos - Badagry expressway had been under construction.
See how he played himself. Sanwoolu can just bury his political career by prosecuting and convicting him like they did Funke.
Boom! He will be ineligible to contest any election again in Nigeria except he gets Presidential pardon. He will be referred to as ex-convixt because of small party he attend ó
Is breaking quarantine a felony? If it isnt I assume he could still contest.
AgentNairaland: They Are Confused Slaves.. They Knw That Polygamous Family Not The Best
allah There god Commanded Them To Have Maximum Of Four Wives, Muhammad The Messenger Disobeyed His god, He Married Over TEN WIVES.. The Same Woman Poisoned Him, Sent Him To Early Grave..
You got some facts wrong. The jew woman that poisoned him wasn't his wife. Mohammed was allowed to.
0m0nnakoda: Sanusi has 24 children He is not the right person to preach By any measure of modernity 24 children is irresponsible even if he has money. What about time? What about the fact that he is a model for many. Just like Buhari coming out to say public officials should use Nigerian Hospitals or universities for their children Enough said
Where did u get information about him having 24 kids? I haven't been able to find that. You're free to disagree with his life choices but does it make him a hypocrite? You didn't show how Sanusi is breaking his personal code. Did Sanusi not spend enough time with kids? If Sanusi is the model it would be preferable to having beggar kids and wives you cant cater for.
Faber: Our Government scrapped History from our school curriculum...thinking that history is all about the civil war..
As a sequel we failed to learn from History...We repeated the mistake of 1918.
We may pay for it not later but now. May God help us.
Butoneday2: The zoo government scrapped it because they don't want this generation to know anything about Biafra or Biafran war but reverse is the case if you know you know. The rising sun will keep shinning.
luckgood: There's need to bring history back to the schools and must be a compulsory subject for all
When is your state reintroducing history into the curriculum? The FG isnt stopping anyone from paying teachers.
Lol the police cant defend themselves from a "angry youths". It really shows they're paper tigers when push comes to shove. Religious zealotry is something else man.
