plaindealer: Please show us any reference where that comment was made by any government official. The interview which is the source of this topic showed the minister saying the FG is building a rail line to Maradi which is in Niger and you still want us to believe that they are not being honest?
If they did not say they are building anything to Niger, how did you find out about the project if not from the FG.
Maradi is a border town next to Nigeria so where is the need for this argument? Maybe Garba Shehu is uncreditable and should be fired. Last September he said Niger Republic was building rail on their end. The government was being dishonest there's no need for arguement I agree. 20km of rail are being built in Niger Republic on Nigeria's dime those are facts. However, explaining the scope and form of the project in a number of tweets on his verified Twitter handle, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said the Nigerian end of the rail line would terminate at the country’s end of the border with Niger.
According to the spokesman, Nigeria and the Niger Republic signed an agreement in 2015 to build a track from their ends, explaining that the two works, named the ‘Kano-Katsina-Maradi Corridor Master Plan (K2M)”, would meet at the border.
“Nigeria isn’t building rail line into Niger but, only to the designated Border point,” Shehu said. “An agreement between Nigeria and Niger in 2015, coordinated by the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission for Cooperation has a plan for “Kano-Katsina-Maradi Corridor Master Plan, (K2M)” as it is called.
“Going by this, the two nations would each build a rail track to meet at the border town of Maradi. https://mobile.twitter.com/GarShehu/status/1309181656901844995?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1309181656901844995%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fnairametrics.com%2F2020%2F09%2F25%2Fpresidency-denies-building-rail-line-from-nigeria-to-niger-republic%2F

plaindealer: We know what the minister said, he said we are not going into Niger, meaning we are not going deep into Niger which is true, we are basically building to their border town with Nigeria. Maradi is a border town next to Nigeria, not a town or city deep inside Niger, this is the point the minister was making so let's be clear.
The fact that there are other ports in the region to go means there are no incentives or reasons for them to pay or shoulder any cost when the other ports are there for them to go to so that's a non-starter.
About Benin, sure, PMB is the president today and the buck stops with him, but it's very ironic and disingenuous to lay the decades-old problem and bad government policies at his doorsteps because Benin, bribery and smuggling into Nigeria and taking port business from Nigeria has been going on for ages and the last time I checked, Buhari closed the border for months to address the same issue and protect our interest, something that's never been don in the history of Nigeria, this action alone saved our rice industry and farmers. Wheather it's deep or not isn't the issue. They said they werent and they are which why that's dishonest. The Niger Republic section of rail is 20km out the whole 378km for the rail. The FOI request released by the Federal government stated this fact. On the cost of contract, the Federal Ministry of Transport insisted that the actual cost of the project is USD 1,959,744,723,71 (One Billion, Nine Hundred and Fifty Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Forty Four Thousand, Seven Hundred and Twenty Dollar and Seventy one Cent) inclusive of 7.5% VAT. They confirmed that the track length of the rail is 378km starting from Kano – Danbatta – Kazana – Daura – Meshi – Kastina – Jibiya – Maradi (Niger Republic) with branch line to Dutse in Jigawa State. It also confirmed that only 20km of the track length is within Niger Republic while 358km is within Nigeria. I disagree with your arguement about then not wanting to invest because there's other ports. If that was the case why did they bother working with Benin in the first place for decades trying to achieve this project. They more than willing to invest and nigeria the larger trade partner but thwy choose them for other political reasons. Also have multiple export routes wouldnt hurt them either. Theres no evidence Shutting down the border had any significant impact on any off the issues we're talking about. The crime rate in general hasn't gone done from what I can guage but we'll have a better idea if the decide to publish the crime report. |
Politics › Re: Amaechi: We Begged Niger Republic To Construct Railway For Them by Blue3k(m): 3:33pm On Mar 31, 2021 |
plaindealer: To start with, the portion of the rail line to Niger is costing us only $200 million, not $1.5 billion, it's in the same interview, the same place this article came from, people just singled out their own preferred portion of the interview for their own self-induced motives.
We determine what's best for our country in terms of trade and commerce, not other countries and this rail system mean cheaper port options because it's a cheaper transportation option that removes associated costs transporters incurs via road transportation from accidents to checkpoints, bribes, break downs and delays. Nothing stops us from creating the best and the cheapest model to sell and remain profitable regardless of what other countries are doing, business is all about profits and ease, not colonial bondages.
Goods and services leaving and entering Nigeria remain the lifeline for nearly all the countries in our region France or no France, we are still the dominant economic multiplier in our region and the whole of Africa and we must keep moving, keep expanding, keep putting infrastructures in place to keep cementing that dominance, not to fold hands because of marginal concerns about other countries. Im not debating if it's 200 million or billion. I said they weren't being honest about not building into Niger republic. I dont think thats up for debate. I said the deal Amaechi made was bad because it could have been handled muchbetter. Getting them to agree to a relatively small portion of debt shouldnt be that hard considering there wouldnt be any legal challenges with this rail project. This isn't a marginal concern especially when you consider one of the benefit is then using the lagos port as export hub. Yes regional trade is great and is the bigger selling point actually. They're an ECOWAS partner so that's not the issue. If Nigeria was so good at implementing good policies to be better than Benin the country wouldn't have lost port traffic to them to begin with. Buhari failed to check corruption at checkpoints, criminality and address the customs charges. These are within the states power they didnt address. I agree nigeria could be more competitive than Benin if there ports become more efficient. Other than that I got no grapes about the project other than them not being truthful and nigeria paying everything. Im hoping Nigeria collecting revenue on their side of the border to. If so it not all bad but who knows what he agreed to. |

plaindealer: Having a rail system where goods are shipped back and forth via our rail system offers the best mode of transportation of goods and services anywhere in the region. The load up in Lagos or from the country, they go through customs, immigration easily at both ends, put their goods on the rail wagon for straight forward transportation, a better system for them, a great market and economic benefits for us.
The total cost for this aspect of the rail line is $200 million, an investment with multi $Billion windfall for decades to come, a move to position and keep cementing Nigeria's economic dominance, trade, and transportation in the region. The deal isn't good especially when you consider they were more than willing to pay for a rail line to connect with Benin Republic. That rail contract hasn't been terminated so this Niger Nigeria rail wont be a competitive advantage longterm. They will always alternate between cheaper port option. Aside from begging them to build the rail noboody knows what other concessions he might of made to them. They weren't honest about building rail line into their country at first. Beating Benin Republic at establishing a rail could have been handled better. French firm Bollore will cover the entire 1.07 billion euro cost of building the rail link, according to the terms of the deal.
Bollore will own a 40 percent stake in the operator BENI Rail, in which the two countries will each own 10 percent. The remaining stake will be owned by private investors from Niger and Benin.

Who do you think this tax burden going to fall on to fund your welfare state? |

dignity33: The taxes should be pay as you earn, a poor man we pay accordingly while the rich we pay accordingly so the system works for everybody. This doesn't change the facts the tax rates will increase substantially. When the federal government starts charging an income tax they will take at 20-30 percent on average to fund your welfare system. Have fun paying your you state and federal income taxes. Since you like comparing Nigeria to South Africa here's their income tax brackets. Be ready to surrender at least 1/10 your money to the Government. Then the government still has to fund capital projects along with this new burden.

It means that if you don't earn you can't pay taxes so stop defending this useless government. I didnt say they taxed the unemployed stop acting strawmen. I said the government will have to increase taxes to fund this welfare state. These rates will have to be much higher on an already poor workforce. Remember half the population poor and unemployment. |

dignity33: Nigeria is the biggest economy in Africa. No reason why our government should not provide such welfare system for it citizen except you are part of the system. If you want to provide welfare just be prepared to for high taxes to fund it like I said in my initial comment. Funding welfare programs for a country where half the population doesnt have a job and desperately poor would be brutal on the budget. It makes more sense just addressing the systemic issues with unemployment and tackling criminality with better law enforcement tactics. |

dignity33: Those individuals and politician that are among the richest in the world and Africa, in which country did they make that money? That doesn't make the nation itself rich. Wealth isnt measured by how much your politicians pay themselves. It's measured by metrics like percapita GDP, household wealth, GDP etc. You wouldn't claim Nigeria is richer than the state of Texas because Nigerian politicians pay them more than their Texas politicians. |

dignity33: providing a chart have nothing to do with what I'm talking about if unemployment is high in Nigeria what are the causes, will South Africa come to Nigeria and tackle our unemployed system what is essence of our government? Oga you are not making sense let me remind you that our executive, legislature still one of the highest paid in this planet yet no workable amenities that will create sustainable job to our citizen. You're not rich and cant afford a welfare state without high taxes on a poor populace. The charts have everything to do with what your talking about. You claimes the country was rich than south Africa erroneously. Just because these currupt politicians waste money doesn't make the country rich. Causes of unemployment would be policies like import bans and substitution that hurt industry, strong naira policy that overvalues naira and the fact the ease of doing business is so terrible. I would also argue the land use act is bad because it makes collateralizing land harder and make real estate less valuable than it would naturally be. |

dignity33: South Africa is not richer than Nigeria why can't Nigeria emulate there Social welfare system that have helped to reduce poverty to it citizen and reduce crime. Paying taxes is one of responsibility of every citizens as long the taxes is going to be utilized properly to improve the life of citizen. What do you collect in taxes compared to South Africa? What's your per capita GDP and poverty rate compared to south Africa? Nigeria is only "rich" of your looking at GDP. Nigeria trying to support a welfare state where almost half the workforce is unemployed would be brutal. The workforce will pay an ever increasing burden because the main issues with unemployment and povery are not being tackled.

Nigeria Government should atleat emulate South Africa social welfare system it will reduce crime tremendously . Are you ready to pay the taxes required to maintain a welfare state? 20-35 percent depending in your income level. It makes more sense just making eliminating policies that are hurting the nigerian economy and being tough on crime. |

The minister said due to insecurity and poor road infrastructure as well as extortion by security agents, Niger Republic and Chad preferred exporting and importing their goods through Benin Republic, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Togo. “They say immigration does not allow them. Even when they pass all these, there are police checkpoints on the road, customs checkpoints on the road, immigration checkpoints on the road. Then communities have their own checkpoints on the road, armed robbers attack them on the road. So, they prefer to go where it is safe and cheaper to do business. All that is failure on Buhari's part to rout out corruption and tackle crime. Theres checkpoints every 5 minutes and crime is through the roof. Lol these foolish checkpoints don't reduce crime but they do give these government crooks a nice payday. “To even get to Maradi I had to travel to Niger Republic to even beg them. They are not bringing their money. It is our money. But I’m begging them to allow me access into Maradi.” Lol they were satisfied building a rail line with Benin republic it seems. What other concessions did you give them? Are they going to collect all the revenue as well? I'm sure you had to beg because they were afraid of importing Nigerian criminality into their country. Politics › Extend Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Rail Line To Chad, President Deby Tells Buhari by Blue3k(op): 4:54pm On Mar 29, 2021 |
President Idris Deby of Chad on Saturday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to extend the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri eastern corridor railway line to Chad to enhance trade between Nigeria and his country.
President Buhari performed the groundbreaking of the $3 billion Port Harcourt-Maiduguri project earlier this month.
Addressing correspondents at the presidential villa, Abuja at end of his one-day visit when he had bilateral talks with Buhari, the Chadian leader said such rail and road transportation link with Nigeria would enable goods to be moved to his landlocked country.
If Buhari agrees to the request, it will be second of such project his administration will embark upon after the Kano-Maradi, Niger Republic rail line.
Deby said he discussed a number of important issues with his host including the challenges facing Nigeria and Chad and how to strengthen bilateral relations.
According to him, they discussed the issue of Islamic State and the challenges that they pose to the two countries as well as the Lake Chad environment.
He said that the issue of transfer of water from the Central African Region Republic was addressed, power interconnectivity between Nigeria and Chad and the closure of the borders, adding that the discussion clarified the reasoning behind the border closure.
He further said that the issue of transfer of water from the Central African Region Republic was also discussed, saying: “Regarding the transfer of water into the recharging of Lake Chad, in 2018 there was a summit meeting of the heads of state of the Lake Chad countries and President Muhammadu Buhari was appointed as the champion for this recharging of Lake Chad.
“Nigeria paid the money for a feasibility study to be done on this recharging of Lake Chad.
“So the issue is really now its financing because we have a feasibility study. It’s something that’s going to be very capital intensive, cost a lot of money and we’re going to have to depend on technical partners, financial institutions and other partners to help to finance this.
“It’s something that is not just for Africans, the environmental impact of a shrinking Lake Chad, but it affects humanity and so everybody has to really mobilise to find the means to be able to carry out this recharging and the beneficiaries will be the whole of humanity.”
Fielding question on the concerns over the activities of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), he said a situation where the task force carried out operations only once a year is a great challenge.
Deby affirmed that defeating the Boko Haram has become a difficult task because of this.
The Chadian President stated: “Yes, in fact, that’s what he was discussing with President Muhammadu Buhari, this issue of the Multinational Joint Task Force, that the situation where it is only able to carry out one operation a year, makes things very difficult and the task of defeating Boko Haram more difficult.
“But with the new security apparatus that has been put in place with the new security chiefs and not only in Nigeria, but even on the Multinational Joint Task Force itself, which also has a new leadership, that we’re hopeful now that with new strategies, and new dynamism, that we’ll be able to address definitively the issue of Boko Haram.”
Asked about the strength of Boko Haram, he added: “Boko Haram is indeed an evil that has hampered the four countries of the Lake Chad Basin, and it has done many harm to our populations. It would be remembered that since 2013/2014, the four countries put together their means to create the Multinational Joint Task Force, this Multinational Joint Task Force has had good results."
