akwesenana: He has his mind on an agenda, nothing can convince him otherwise. That’s the problem with Okpa, most of his discussions is almost always centered around agenda . Two days ago he came here talking about how Arthur Eze was being singled out for criticism over his display of sycophancy at IBB’s book launch . He was inputting that Dangote and BUA did same display of sycophancy and were not criticized by the media . I asked him for videos/transcript of those aforementioned duo’s speech at the event and he just disappeared into thin air! . Agenda Lazzident! 😂 |

Spy360: Why was he given a pardon? 😂 Presidential pardon is at the discretion of whoever is the president. A president can give any suspected/convicted criminal pardon if he so desires. At least Jonathan gave his former boss presidential pardon when he was president. What Ojukwu did is called treason in LEGALese. Only a president can grant pardon for such without offering any explanation to his actions and that was what Shagari did. |

Spy360: Obasanjo's case is not cowardice. It looks tactical. Stoop and conquer. He has a high IQ.
Ogundipe's case is pure cowardice let's be honest.
Ironsi has always been known for his courage but low IQ. He single handledly took over a radio station from the coupist and announced that the coup has failed. The rebel soldiers were afraid to confront him. He had his way with just his pistol. That's courage. His problem is he isn't very smart. Lolz. U just dey dish out word salad confidently like say people wey u dey deal with no know anything. Obasanjo didn't stoop to conquer anything. He simply went into hiding and only came out when his Akirinade and Alabi-Isama had dealt the coupists blow. Ogundipe knew he would die just like Obasanjo realized and decided to move away to avoid stories that touch. The good thing is u were honest enough to agree that Ironsi's decision wasn't a wise one in the long run. End of Discussion. |

Spy360: That's the point you should get.
When he returned home. He formed a political party. Contested for president. Received a state burial. This was because he was granted pardon by Shehu Shagari in 1982. What you call state burial is actually a military burial because he was a Lietenant Colonel in the Nigerian army. If he hadn't gotten presidential pardon for treason from Shagari's government he would not have been able to return home, contest an election nor get a full military burial. Nothing to see here bro. |

Akaekpuchionwa2: Excuses everywhere. Ironsi didn't run away from responsibility. Ogundipe ran away it's properly documented in IBB book. No excuse. They said he didn't have the nerves of a soldier. No, he wasn't suicidal. In the article u refused to read it was stated that After Murtala was taken out, Obasanjo had to go into hiding simply because he was marked for death as a senior officer by the coupists. It was only after Gen. Alani Akinrinade and Brig. Godwin Alabi-Isama had told off the coupists before Obasanjo came out of hiding to be appointed as the head of state by the supreme military council. If we are following ur logic, Obsanjo was a coward but then he lived long enough to be celebrated as one of the best leaders Nigeria ever had. He still lives today because of an act u wish to label as "cowardice". That was what Chinua Achebe meant in that proverb. Ironsi that didn't run away, we all knew how things ended for him. |

Akaekpuchionwa2: Hindsight is 20/20
One can also make another argument that if Ogundipe fought for his right. The war probably wouldn't have happened in the first place. That's the reason why u should've read through that article to the end. The author gave instances of senior officers that lost their lives simply because they were senior officers when their junior officers executed a coup. I have that Ademoyega's book "Why we struck" , I read the book and saw through the line of reasoning of the first coupists in this country. The junior officers who planned the coup knew they had to take out the senior officers whom they referred to as "reactionary" . They believe if the senior officers are not taken out, the coup will fail and that was what happened. You think Ogundipe is not intelligent enough to read the room that the second coupists will not make such mistake? Moreover, the second coup is a northern led coup that would not only take out the officers of Igbo origin but also Yoruba senior officers which Ogundipe was one of. In that same article u refused to read, it was stated that prior to Ogundipe declining to take charge; all the senior officers in the army bar himself and Wellington Bassey have all lost their lives to a bloody coup. |

We often stand in the compound of a coward to point at the ruins where a brave man used to liveThat article simply pointed out different military men who lost their lives trying to form actor when their junior officers executed military coups ; Needless to say Ironsi was one of those people who lost his life and even the Murtala u also claimed didn’t run also lost his life in a gruesome manner . Akaekpuchionwa2: There's no difference. Ironsi didn't run, Murtalla did not run. He assumed position, according to IBB OBJ wanted to run, but Danjuma pressured him to take over. So why did Ogundipe run? These guys are soldiers and not civilian political leaders. This agenda you are flying has long been quashed in the Vanguard newspaper of 18th November 2017 by Emeka Obasi This is a battle I will fight until recognition comes the way of Nigeria’s first Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, Brig.[Gen.] Babafemi Olatunde Ogundipe. History must be fair to this man even if compatriots look the other way.
The story that he ran away from Nigeria because he was not brave enough to take over as Head of State following the assassination of Gen. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi is not true. It is like calling a dog a bad name to hang it.
Ogundipe, with identification, N6, was right in all decisions he took after the July 1966 coup. He was the most senior officer alive, the only brigadier still standing and at the brink of execution. All those commissioned before him[ Ironsi,N2, Brig. Samuel Ademulegun, N3, Col. Raph Sodeinde,N4 and Col. Kuru Mohammed N5], but one, [Col. Wellington Bassey,N1] had been murdered.
The Yoruba had lost almost all their senior officers. Lt.Col. Adekunle Fajuyi was killed with Ironsi in Ibadan, the Yoruba headquarters. Ademulegun and Sodeinde were shot in Kaduna, regional capital of the North. Col. Adeyinka Adebayo was away while Lt.Col. Victor Banjo was in detention.
Those who killed Ironsi and Fajuyi were junior officers and non commissioned officers. Titus Numan snatched the military leader’s crocodile stick while other ranks, some accounts say Ibrahim Rabo, Tijani Maiduguri, Sabo Kwale and Clement Dabang, among others, did the damage.
So how could anybody blame Ogundipe whose orders were ignored by an NCO for not taking over government. Lt.Col. Emeka Ojukwu was being diplomatic when he expected the most senior officer after Ironsi to be named Head of State instead of Lt.Col. Yakubu Gowon.
Ogundipe had no troops. Those who should have come to his defence were not there for him. The Army was made up of the First Brigade, Lagos commanded by Lt.Col Hilary Njoku and the Second Brigade, Kaduna under Col. Bassey. The former was with Ironsi and escaped with bullet wounds while the latter did not react at all.
Please let us get this right. When Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was killed in January 1966, President Nnamdi Azikiwe was out of the country. Acting President, Dr. Nwafor Orizu, did not have the power to fight. He invited Ironsi to take over.
When Gowon was sacked in 1975, the next in command, Admiral Edet Wey, did not challenge Brig. Murtala Mohammed and his boys. The most senior Army officer, Gen. David Ejoor, did not fire a shot. They all went into retirement. No one blamed them for not taking over.
I will tell the Obasanjo story. We have to thank the duo of Gen. Alani Akinrinade and Brig. Godwin Alabi-Isama for being there for Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo when Murtala was killed in 1976. OBJ was marked for death but escaped and went into hiding, yes, for good.
Possibly, Gen. Yakubu Danjuma, would have stepped in if his pals, Akinrinade and Alabi-Isama did not play smart. Akinrinade as GOC, First Division, Kaduna held on firmly and told the plotters to go to hell. Alabi-Isama was handling Danjuma in Lagos. Col.Sani Abacha’s Brigade in Port Harcourt faulted the coup just like Col. Mamman Vatsa in Calabar.
There was no such bold action by anyone to support Ogundipe. He was left alone. A general without troops is as good as an eunuch. He would not perform even if you presented him with seven virgin from tropics.
When President Umaru Yar’adua passed on, it took the whole nation to take Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to the top, in spite of the Constitutional provisions. We began to hear about ‘Doctrine of Necessity.’
Ogundipe relocated to the United Kingdom where he became High Commissioner. Gowon, two ranks his junior, was Head of State. Wise decision. Ogundipe did not want to serve in Nigeria under Gowon. Others did it. He died in London on November, 20 ,1971.
Ogundipe was right. The Yoruba have never been favoured in any coup. They lost Ademulegun and his wife Feyi; Col. Sodeinde, Maj. Samuel Adegoke and Sgt. Daramola Oyegoke on January 15, 1966. In July, Fajuyi, Maj. Ayodele Ogunro, Lts. S.E. Idowu and A.O. Olaniyan died.
The February 1966 coup consumed Col. Ibrahim Taiwo, Lt. Akintunde Akinsehinwa, Majs. Ola Ogunmekan and Kola Afolabi. Murtala’s wife is Yoruba. The Vatsa plot of 1985 took Maj. Idowu Bamidele and Squadron Leader Martin Luther King.
The Gideon Orkar coup of 1990 cost four Yoruba lives. Okar was married to an Ogbomoso woman. All seven men condemned to death after the coup against Abacha in 1998 were Yoruba.
It is in this vein that I call on all Yoruba to stand up today and honour Ogundipe. Monday, November 20, 2017 will be 46 years since he departed. I expect to see full page ads in at least three major national newspapers.
It is ignorance to refer to him as a coward. A man who fought in Burma, the land of the Wa, expert head hunters, saw action in India and spent three years in the Congo fighting, deserves all respect. Between the Awujale of Ijebu land and Chief Olusola Ogundipe, something must be done to immortalize this officer. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/11/in-defence-of-babafemi-ogundipe/ |

The whole drama is funny and at the same time shameful.
It is funny that a single individual wants to impose himself as the leader of a 40-man group and he actually thinks he has every right to do so.
It is shameful because the powers that be actually supports his line of reasoning and are willing to make available to him every instrument/machinery of the state for him to achieve such inglorious goal .
Now he will be presiding over members who don't want him on the seat. How will they be able to legislate properly in the best interest of the state when they don't even agree ? |

I think one major problem we have in this country is caring too much about the tribe/ethnic group of a criminal/suspected criminal than the actual crime the person committed.
If Nigeria were to be a working country, criminals are to be apprehended and tried solely based on the crime they committed without anyone caring to know what ethnic group the criminal "represents".
For example, if an individual makes a statement that can be classified as being inciting/promoting hate, such individual should be dealt with by law officers irrespective of what part of the country he's from, but sadly that's not the case in Nigeria.
That is why it appears as if some people will defend a criminal who happens to come from their region and further proceed to challenge the government to first prosecute suspected criminals from other region before coming for their own region's criminal.
No country will grow when there is no equity and fairness in the justice system. |
