There are several ponzi schemes springing up on a daily basis, we only know of CBEX because the promoters made a big bag.

People too should shun these ponzi schemes abeg. EFCC who have the job are actually going hard on these guys but Nigeria is a big country there's not much they can do to clamp down on them.

Yes, you are right that ignorance might be a factor in some cases, but in most cases, greed is the major reason. A small subset of people might be ignorant, but most people can't hide under that excuse.

How man Nigerians can still claim not knowing what Ponzi schemes look like after witnessing Umana Umana, Nospetco, MMM etc. Even an ignorant person who is not greedy would not fall victim cos it will sound too good to be true.

Greed is the essential ingredient needed to fall victim.

From the little I've read about the ponzi scheme, they have an app which people voluntarily register on and put their money on it. Shey SEC will pay hacker to hack the app ni or what ? What is the budget of SEC that they will spend substantial part of it doing radio jingle and TV adverts warning people every eke market day that a new ponzi scheme springs up?

As of this morning I don dey see people talking about another one that is still paying called PCEX or something like that.

SEC has always warned people about wonder banks and ponzi schemes. I won't blame SEC on this at all.

It is not really about lack of financial education but about innate greed and predilection for flouting rules and regulations. Nigerians always believe they are too sharp and can exploit the system. That is why even those that know it is a Ponzi scheme and doomed to fail, will get involved hoping to pull profit from it and exit before the roof collapses.

You are not wrong when say greed is one of the major reasons a lot of people get sucked-in on ponzi schemes, but you also should know that greed is not the only factor.

There are different categories of people who fall for ponzi scheme. There is a particular set of people who really don't know much about anything finance and investing. For example there are Alaba boys, Idumota boys, etc that the only way of investing they know is stocking their shop with goods and selling at cost price + profit margin.

These categories of people don't know about any other form of finance and always rely on word of mouth convincing and showing them evidence of what you made from any other "investment" for them to keep some of their funds there. If they are unfortunate to have an in-law or relative that has gone to school and comes around preaching any of these ponzi schemes, they will fall and lose money when the whole thing crash.

If someone like that has little financial education, he won't fall for such.

As for those who lose their money due to greed knowing it is a ponzi scheme, those ones deserve everything they are getting

A lot of Nigerians come about money but they lack basic financial education.

Once you can't get a logical and satisfying answer, you should know what will come afterwards.

Maybe it's me, but it looks like this cbex was completely under the radar. The ones before it, one heard of them because there was always someone who wanted you to join in. I am inclined to agree with you. In this case they focused on a demographic. Probably sold it as elite investment.

It is the old school yahoo boys who were actually intelligent imho. Most of these ones today are simply running templates and hoping to get lucky.

I also found out about the CBEX thing only about 2 weeks ago when it was already having problems. I think they targeted yahoo boys and all those crypto boys. It was done majorly on telegram and WhatsApp groups.

It was only when they were having issues they started bringing it to Twitter to discuss about it possibly going the way of MMM. They really picked their victims out.

Ponzi schemes generally work on a principle that has always worked with the Nigerian people : Ponzi schemes will have you believe that the traditional banking and financial system is designed to make you poor. They make you believe whatever interest rate your normal investment in the Nigerian banking and financial system will give, you can get multiple of it in their scheme but the government and it's agencies don't want that for you

Once they have people believing this, they will offer ridiculous ROI that defies logic. They will see that for example Treasury bills backed by government will give you 18.5% interest rate per annum, then they will offer you 30% interest rate within a month. Do you know how crazy that is? You leave you money with them for 30 days and get 30% ROI ; meanwhile the FG backed investment expects you to leave your funds with government for a whole year and get 18.5% interest in return.

The average greedy Nigerian thinks it is a risk that is worth taking but they will later learn the hard way.

There are loads of low risk investment options u can put such amount of money and u will be earning steady passive income. Like u will just be telling Ur financial advisor to roll over every investment cycle?

A friend of mine who once worked in a finance house told me about some of their customers who have investments in excess of N100m who sometimes get as much as N2m to N3m on a monthly basis as interest. They just collect the interests regularly and ask the company to roll over the investment again.

I believe most people in this CBEX scam na people who think they are so wise and can always find ways to double their money outside the traditional finance system

The way people are being arrested for defamation is getting out of hand. Defamation is a civil matter. If anybody defame you take the person to court, arrest should only come into the equation if the defamer refuses to show up in court.

Portable is being charged for criminal defamation, intimidation, inciting public disturbance, and cyberstalking..

If u follow him or watch is videos concerning the whole saga, u will know that he's not just being held for defamation.

He used the music of an A-list fuji musician without the musician's approval neither did he give credit to the musician. Being signed on a global music label, the international management of the artist followed due process in having that particular portable's music yanked off all digital platform citing copyright infringement ( which is even a crime in Nigeria)

Now instead of Portable to collect the L and move on; he resorted to cyberstalking the artist. He kept on making videos attacking the person of the artist for having his music yanked off digital platforms. He even threatened him in one of his numerous videos ( which is another crime). He incited public disturbance by claiming in his videos that if anything should happen to him then Saheed Osupa should be ready for what comes after.

I believe Saheed Osupa was embarrassed by all portable's shenanigans and decided to test the law by writing a petition against Portable to the police for them to charge him to court. At least within 24 hours he has been charged to court and he has been granted bail.

If u ask me, Saheed Osupa hasn't done wrong for now. Let Portable face his warrant ; he should get a lawyer and prove his case in court

The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, also known in the entertainment industry as “Portable” following a petition received from one Mr. Okunola Saheed, popularly known as "Osupa," against Habeeb Okikiola Badmus a.k.a “Portable”.

The confirmation of the arrest of the controversial artiste is contained in a press release made available to journalists on Sunday night in Ilorin the Kwara State capital by the Police Public Relations Officer of Kwara Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.

According to the statement, Police detectives of Kwara Command have taken lawful steps in line with due process to investigate the allegations.

Police authority further noted that the petition borders on serious allegations which includes criminal defamation, threat to life, incitement, character assassination, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and the use of abusive and insulting words.

Police maintained that in view of the weight of the said allegations and the supporting evidence presented, the Command secured a valid arrest warrant from a Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin.

Acting on this warrant, operatives from the Command proceeded to Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday, 13th April 2025, where the suspect was apprehended at about 19:25hrs. He was immediately brought to Ilorin for further investigations.

Upon his arrival, the suspect's statement was taken in the presence of legal representatives from both parties and he is currently in custody and arrangements are being made to charge him to court without delay.

The State however submitted that the Kwara State Police Command remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served in a fair and transparent manner urging members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information.

Portable ọmọ olalomi was arrested by Kwara state police command officers in Abeokuta and was shipped to Ilorin, Kwara state immediately for the various offences he allegedly committed against the person of Saheed Osupa.

Portable alleged Osupa had his song yanked off digital platforms because he sampled one of his(Osupa's) songs. Osupa's management has come out to explain that Osupa is now under a global music brand that takes intellectual property law serious and they are the ones who took down portable songs even without Osupa having a say in the matter.

Portable being an illiterate doesn't care about the explanation and just thinks Osupa himself is the one behind his predicament. He keeps calling out Osupa, threatening him, inciting public hate against him and dragging his name in the mud.

My Opinion : I think Portable does these things to just remain relevant. He wants these controversies so he can record new singles from these ordeals
