the average nigerian has zero concept of basic safety and also a complete disregard for safety in general
i regularly see tanker drivers smoking beside tankers full of product
as for drivinhg, it is only in lagos people wear seatbelts - and this even includes road safety

driving safety is one of my pet peeves because you will see nigerians put thier children in thr front seat. you will see mothers put babies in the front seats of cars - sometimes the children will sit with them in the drivers seat

so i will not be suprised if the average nigerian does not know or care that explosives are controlled /regulated substances

nigerians only proactiveness is in saying a petrol station should not be sited in a location - which for me is partially misguided. a fuel station or gas plant is safe as long as it is deigned and operated accoording to standard [of course there again is where nigerians come in, esp for all these independent mush room operators.]
There are a whole lot wrong with us as a people . For starters we worship foreigners.

I was somewhere around Odeku Junction in V.I recently and I saw a foreigner ( don’t know his nationality but he was white ) on the steering wheel and he was smoking while driving . He was right in front of the LASTMA controlling traffic at Odeku Junction and nobody seem to care if he was smoking or not.

Then I remember the Lagos traffic law Sanwoolu passed that actually criminalizes smoking , eating and drinking on the wheels; but none of the LASTMA officers were interested in enforcing this law at that moment. I just knew if the guy was a normal Nigerian without escort or having his plate number covered, they would’ve swooped on him and most likely Jack his vehicle to be towed .

As regards that seatbelt matter , even here in Lagos people look at me with one kind eye when they see me wear my seatbelt within the estate .It appears as if there’s an unwritten rule that when u are about hitting the express is the time u wear u seatbelt and not while u are driving in a known terrain 🤦‍♂️

As it stands one does not only need to know what his or her neighbor stores in the house, but needs to be willing to take the bold step of blowing whistle if it’s something that can harm u.

I’ve watched videos of some of he victims whose houses were affected . It appears they know those guys storing the explosives . The victims in the interviews were saying it boldly on camera that those Guys are foreigners who use dynamites for their mining job.

Posers for the Governor of Oyo State Seyi Makinde and Security agencies regarding the deadly #IbadanBlast last night

1. Even in developed countries, it takes nothing less than 48 hours before government agencies make a categorical statement about such a massive explosion. These include cordoning off the area, obtaining evidence on the scene, and analyzing it before telling the public what exactly happened.

2. In less than 10 hours, Governor Seyi makinde already "investigated" the incident and submitted it was “Illegal Miners.” Who are the illegal miners? What do they mine, and why are they in possession of such powerful explosives?

3. Is there any explosives dealer known to security agencies in a high-brow neighborhood in Ibadan that the govt had long been aware of and did nothing about?

4. Again, who is that miner? What is the miner's name, and what do they mine in Oyo state? Is it gold, silver, cobalt, uranium, or what? A release should be done immediately to reveal the identity of the miner!

5. Mining and using explosives has a procedure and rarely explodes without a trigger, especially dynamite. You have to ignite it automatedly or use fire. Was the building rigged with explosives? If so, why so?

6. Is the governor or Oyo state government aware of mining in Agodi residential area? Is the governor aware of it, or is his or the state carrying out rock blasting in a residential area?

7. The DSS is saddled with approving the use of explosives around Nigeria. What is their public position on what happened? At least citizens need a preliminary report from the DSS on this matter immediately.

Now that he is FCT minister he has raised a very reasonable point, let the concerned council chairmen adjust and make themselves visible in their respective councils

Exactly this is actually what happens but baba is looking for scapegoat for his incompetency
I don't think he's making excuse for anything; he's only addressing an anomaly that has been going on for too long. Normally a council chairman can travel abroad for annual leave and working visit when the need arises, but it doesn't make sense for a council chairman to spend weeks and even months outside their constituencies when they are not bed-ridden in an hospital.

I believe if a council is always available and accessible, the people would find it easy communicating any major issue to them and some of these issues can be nipped in the bud before they get to a national scale. We can't say because Abuja happens to be the FCT where the seat of federal government is situated so the council chairmen should abdicate their duties na.

Even in Lagos we’ve had some LCDA chairmen who live so far away from their LCDA which actually doesn’t make sense to me. They are meant to be the closest arm of government to the people .

I think I agree with Wike here , how will the council chairmen know what’s happening in their council when they are far away in another continent ? How will they brief Wike the FCT ministers of happenings in their councils when they themselves are far away ?

That's why I drew a distinction between Indian resource in India, and resource of Indian descent working in the US/UK

The Indians working in Nigeria are expatriates likely procured as highly skilled specialists.

When you outsource to Indians resource working from India however, the main driver is cost, not skill. You're paying for comparatively cheap resource, not the best of the best
.

And it's that cheap resourcing business model that we're discussing.

The majority of them I've worked with on two of the biggest Indian consultancies were SHÏT bro. In at least one case, it was their utter incompetence that literally led to me been hired to manage a team of them on a client engagement.

Omo no talk this one for outside.

Indian resource (as in resource based in India, and not UK/US based resource of Indian descent) behave very similarly to Nigerians in my experience. There's good and bad talent, highly skilled resource and grifters blagging their way through roles, highly conscientious workers and lazy bums in every workforce.

But the idea that Indians take work more seriously than most is a big MYTH.

Brah, I've worked with a lot, and alongside a lot in my consulting travels - and the majority of the ones I've worked with are shït, having either lied about their skills and qualifications to land on jobs they couldn't do, to being unable to produce documentation in simple English, to being incredibly lazy bums.

In my experience, they work well on repetitive task roles where they have to follow scripts, like call centres, but that doesn't require additional work ethic beyond basic gumption.

No talk this thing again for outside. grin
Baba I've worked with Indians here in Nigeria and I've seen them work as jacky. Maybe it's different outside sha, I don't know.

President Bola Tinubu has violated a new directive he recently issued on cutting down the number of people on his entourage during local and international travels.

Last Tuesday, the President announced the slashing of officials accompanying him and other top government officials on official trips.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said the move was part of the new government’s “massive cost-cutting measures.”

Mr Tinubu directed that individuals on his delegations should be pegged at 25 for local travels and 20 for international engagements. He also ordered that security agents based at his destinations should be regularly deployed for his protection whenever he travels to states instead of being accompanied by many security details from Abuja.

The policy drew huge praises from many Nigerians who had all along been irritated by the regime of waste and mismanagement of public funds characterising government operations at state and federal levels.

The directive was issued following a barrage of criticisms of Nigeria’s 1,411-member contingent to the COP 28 climate conference in Dubai and other wasteful public spending patterns.

But less than a week after the new laudable policy took effect, President Tinubu himself violated it. PREMIUM TIMES understands that when he travelled to the South-east state of Imo on Monday to attend the inauguration of Governor Hope Uzodinma for a second and final term, more than 50 individuals were on his delegation.

In his first trip outside Abuja since the new policy was announced, Mr Tinubu flew with at least 25 people on the presidential aircraft to Owerri, the Imo State capital. At least another 30 officials travelled before his arrival in the city.

Some of those who flew with the President on the NAF 001 are his son, Seyi Tinubu; his senior special assistant/private secretary, Aderemi Damilotun; his principal secretary, Hakeem Muri-Okunola; his senior special assistant on domestic matters; Subair Oluwatoyin and his senior special assistant on social events, Atika Ajaka.

Also on the flight were two other Personal Assistants to Mr Tinubu, Kamorudeen Yusuf and Wale Fadare; the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale; the State Chief of Protocol, Victor Adeleke; the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the President, Fasasi Adegboyega; the Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the President, Nurudeen Yusuf (a lieutenant colonel); the Chief Principal Staff Officer to the President (CPSO), Usman Shugaba (a deputy commissioner of police); the Personal Physician to the President, Dr Tinubu Sikiru Adekunle; the Chief Detail to the President; Bashir Mohammed and the Presidential Liaison Officer, Musa Yakubu.

Other officials who flew with Mr Tinubu include:

• Two presidential photographers, Asemota Nosa Joseph and Okanlawon Taiwo.
• The President’s official videographer, Sunday Moses.
• NTA reporter, Musbau Danwahab.
• NTA cameraman, Lukman Sani.

In what one State House official described as ludicrous, also on the presidential aircraft for the trip were Eniola Sakumbi, the personal assistant to the President’s ADC and a certain Emma, who functions as personal assistant to the President’s CSO.

In addition to the officials who flew with Mr Tinubu for an engagement that lasted only a few hours, at least 30 other people were mobilised to travel by commercial aircraft ahead of the President’s arrival in the Imo state capital.

Our sources said the advance party included the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Print Media, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, as well as five other officials from the media unit of the presidency, six officials from the protocol department, 15 security details and five journalists covering the State House in Abuja, even when their media organisations have representatives in Owerri and were on ground to cover the inauguration.

Also on the advance party were soldiers from the Brigade of Guards, drivers and other auxiliary staff with little or no role to play in Owerri.

Presidential spokesperson, Mr Ngelale, did not answer or return calls seeking his comments for this story. As of the time of filing this story, he had yet to respond to a message sent to him.

When u have a president of the most populous black nation making unguarded utterances like the one blow, what perception do u think the outside world would have about Nigerians?

“More than 60 per cent of the population is below 30, a lot of them haven’t been to school and they are claiming that Nigeria is an oil producing country, therefore, they should sit and do nothing, and get housing, healthcare, education free,” Mr Buhari was quoted as saying by The Cable during a panel appearance with world leaders at the Commonwealth Business Forum in London.

Thank you! We are just as skilled here, and it irks me that we aren't having a lion share of the outsourcing market. India was already a top outsourcing destination before Rishi Sunak though, and even more so for Silicon Valley companies.

Just last year, Microsoft had to downsize and that's when I discovered most of its Github top engineers were Indians. Imagine Indians being almost entirely responsible for maintaining the dependencies of millions of websites, web app, and programming languages. Crazy.

Sadly, Nigeria has an uphill task at hand to really measure up to India on this scale.

As at 2022, India had the cheapest internet in the world, second only to Israel. As at 2023 and last week, it's still top 3.

It's tackling its electricity challenges. India is producing electricity in Gigawatts while Nigeria last peaked at ~ 10 megawatts years ago.

Plus the Indian government continually engages these countries in trade deals, gives task breaks to tech companies, e.t.c.

These combine to give the Indian the advantage. Cheap and constant electricity, and cheap internet means tech-wise, the Indian has an advantage to rake up new tech skills quicker.

During the Lockdown, tech courses I took on Coursera and Futurelearn were filled with Indians, and only occasionally would I stumble on a Femi or Dekunle.
----

Unlike Indians in the diaspora, Nigerians abroad in the tech ecosystem do not connect Nigerians on the continent to gigs. The Yorubas do this to their credit, but others have to step up.

Most times these companies just need credible referrals for one to get these gigs.
As per the bold

1. Indians have the numbers and they are one of the most travelled set of people on this earth.

2. Indians live this kinda communal lifestyle/they have camaraderie spirit amongst themselves. Indians patronize fellow Indian companies, they literally watch out for their countrymen anywhere they are. I've seen them exhibit this over and over again.

3. Indians actually take work serious. They work like machines and do not believe in explaining ur way out of a disappointment/ failure to meet deadline. They believe in results.
