ThisTrend: South Africa’s Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has criticised African leaders for seeking medical treatment abroad.
Speaking in Zimbabwe at a World Health Organization (WHO) meeting of African health ministers, Mr Motsoaledi said Africa must be the only continent where the leaders travel abroad for health reasons.
He was addressing the conference hours after President Robert Mugabe, who himself makes regular trips to Singapore for eye treatment, opened the meeting. Mugabe had left the event by the time Mr Motsoaledi spoke.
Newsday newspaper quoted South Africa's health minister as saying: "I have said this before and I will say it again: we are the only continent that has its leaders seeking medical services outside the continent, outside our territory. We must be ashamed of that. This is called health tourism. We must promote our own."
In the past year five African heads of state have gone overseas for medical reasons, they are:
Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe Benin's President Patrice Talon Angola's President Jose Eduardo dos Santos Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika

A statement released by the university management, reads: “The Management of the University of Ibadan wishes to inform the public about the recently announced cut off marks of 120 for University Admission that UI will not lower her standards.
The Nigeria’s premier university still maintains her position in academic excellence and standards in order to continue to aspire towards becoming a world-class university.
It should worry us as patriots that candidates who scored just 30% in UTME can be admitted into some of our universities. Yet, we complain of poor quality of our graduates. You can hardly build something on nothing.
The consolation here is that since JAMB started conducting this qualifying exam in 1978, UI has never admitted any candidate who scored less than 200 marks out of the maximum 400 marks.
This remains our position as an institution aspiring to be world-class. Reality is that only about four other universities in the country have such high standard.
In fairness to the Registrar of JAMB, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, he repeatedly stressed at the Combined Policy Meeting held Tuesday, 22 August, 2017 that the Senate of each university still has wide powers for admission in the spirit of autonomy.
It is also gratifying to note that the Honourable Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, who chaired the meeting, apologised publicly for canceling Post UTME Screening last year.
To be fair to the incumbent Registrar of JAMB, he was not the Registrar when the policy somersault of cancelling POST UTME test was made last year. Prof Oloyede’s appointment was effective 1 August 2016, while the Policy Meeting for that year had held some two months earlier.”
Source: http://www.wobegist.com/2017/08/ui-rejects-jambs-120-admission-cut-off.html Okay agreed. But Is UI herself and their selfs developing to offer world class education or they are just testing intellectuals by chunking in textbooks and testing the students if they grab its entirety. |

It's no more than a plan based on projected income ...what if the income projected is not achieved ?
What do you think they mean by budget performance ?? Are you one of them? Because you are really deviating from the subject. In this case of rat infestation, what income are we looking at. The budget we are looking at as nothing to do with expected income. Tell me if a car battery cost 25,000, will you budget 100,000. We are talking about cleaning here and possible repair of AC. All they need is to call in the concerned specialists to give them a quotation and have it fixed not not quote some crazy figures that seemingly encourages theft. Mind you. Language is arbitrary. Budget can be based on income towards attending to more than one item. and at the same time budget can also be based on a market price of an item while considering high and low. So tell me, what the heck of environmental services will they use 4.9 billion Naira for. Are they planning on removing the entire rats in Abuja or what. |

Fosil fuel car manufcturing done by innoson is not rocket science once you got the training, equitment and technology transfer. There no foreigner anywhere putting finishing touches.
If the railways did not die and governemnt providing enough funding to it,we could have advanced our knowledge in that area. Those day,the railways own foundires where they fabricate train/rail parts for the railway system.
Finally, without developing our iron and steel,we will go no where in rail technology, You are yet coming back to what I said. The government is a reflection of the people. Have you seen a thief entrusting a thief with his/her assets? Remember that Railways did not die on its own, it died because we lack the mental capacity to be sincere and progressive. I must also say, that no funding can ever be enough, we just have to start with something, but have we even started with what we have. Have you seen our universities which are meant to be the base of our research and development going on strike for the sake of research funding other than their allowances and welfare? How many private Nigerian engineering firms(especially those that have benefitted from the government) have you seen partnering with our universities to innovate a ground-breaking technology.? iukpe: Amaechi is totally wrong here. Speaking as an engineer, what is in a railway system? What is in building a track worthy train? I do not see any giant task in that such that a minister will think Nigerian engineers cannot handle it. Nigerian engineers and technologists are very capable of building our power stations, trains and railways, waste incinerators, buses and boats etc, all from scratch.
This is a big excuse to spend some forex just for nothing.
This is why engineers should be transport, energy, petroleum, aviation ministers etc. Just like you cannot believe heart transplant is possible when you're not a surgeon or medical expert. Show me a prototype video of what Nigerians have claimed they can do. Do you think all these things are just to believe that they can do it? Let them market themselves. Sell technologies to us, safety measures etc. Do you think USA government just believe in their engineer without close to reality prototypes and strong research committment? Do you know how many years it took engineers to build Airbus plane? I for one will not shy away from the truth. Our engineers need to do more to convince the government. Nobody wants to die anyhow or be responsible for a mass death. Do you own an Innosson vehicle? I'm sure you are considering safety measures until proving otherwise. Please be sincere with yourself. |
