I watch football and I recognize Messi's greatness. But how great is Messi without his team mates? The idea of greatest can work in an individual sport like boxing because it is one man executing the performances all by himself. His stats are all independent of assists on the canvas. But football is a team sport and every department has players that are the greatest in their own rights. When you pick up a Messi and regard him as the best player based on stats exclusive to the striking department and by extension the midfield, you are being unfair to defenders and goalkeepers whose stats are totally different from that of midfielders and strikers.

Supposing Messi scored 40 goals in a season and wins the UEFA and perhaps has a Buffon in his team who made 180 saves and 20 clean sheets, placing Messi ahead of Buffon would not only be unfair but predictable and boring. FIFA and other footballing bodies have neglected stats for goalkeepers in favour of those for midfielders and strikers and that is why the awards have now become a contest between strikers and midfielders.

I repeat, football is a team sport. Even if you scream that Messi is more than a striker, it does not mean that Messi can stand as a team. There are people in the team who are doing harder jobs in the team but whose efforts go unnoticed because all eyes are on the strikers to get the goals. We forget those who ensure that the team does not concede (the goalkeepers), those who ensure that the 18 is well protected (the defenders) and those who break up attacks (defensive midfielders). Remember Makalele. He was an engine room during his playing days in Chelsea but concentrations were always on the strikers. I think FIFA and the other footballing bodies should do something about this. Football is a team sport and not an individual sport. If they want to give individual awards, they should spread it around the departments.

I said Messi and Ronaldo may be the best strikers but not the best footballers because there are other departments in a typical football team other than the strikers.

A goalkeeper is also a footballer and so are defenders. Can Messi or Ronaldo match the prowess of Buffon or even of Enyeama? Can they match the solidness of Lahm? Can they match the fluidity of Pirlo? So, how can anyone regard them as the greatest players ever? I insist that they may be the greatest in their own department (striking) but not the greatest footballers.

Such things as greatest players should only be mentioned in individual sports like boxing, tennis, badminton, e.t.c.

What I am trying to point out is the rot in our political system.

You would be surprised that money for this portal would be captured in the budget allocation for NYSC. It is like the 78 million naira Fashola website scandal. The contractors got 10 million naira for upgrading the website but 78 million naira was approved for the budget. Since only 10 million naira went to the contractors, what then happened to the remaining 68 million naira?

As for the exploitation of graduates, it is an obvious fact. Where government should employ teachers and pay them according to levels, they would rather use graduates and pay them a meagre 19, 800 naira. The NYSC budget allocation has always been captured in the budget in billions of naira but yet graduates are always being ripped off endlessly. Graduates deserve better.

I am sure that somebody somewhere has pocketed over a billion naira for "creating" that portal. Thieves. They are merely exploiting graduates by using them as cheap labour.

The awards are becoming boring. Football is a team sport but it seems like only strikers matter.

Messi and Ronaldo are not the best players in the world. They may be the best strikers but football is not all about strikers. Football stakeholders should find a way of creating personal awards to cover all departments in a football team so that goalkeepers and defenders can get to win too.
