– HIV is becoming more resistant to treatment in Africa. – African drugs are becoming less effective than those in Europe. – If you think you might have come into contact with HIV, get yourself tested immediately. Strains of HIV are becoming resistant to an antiretroviral drug commonly used to prevent and fight the virus, research has suggested. HIV was resistant to the drug Tenofovir in 60% of cases in several African countries, according to the study, covering the period from 1998 to 2015. The research looked at around 2,000 HIV patients worldwide. Lead author Dr Ravi Gupta said the results were “extremely concerning”. The work, which took four years to complete, started in 2012 and compared patients with HIV in Africa with those in Europe. Splitting the sample size roughly into two groups the study found that in Africa 60% of patients were resistant to Tenofovir, whereas in Europe the figure was only 20%. The paper said poor administration of the drug, in terms of regularly taking the right levels of Tenofovir could be explanation for the discrepancy. “If the right levels of the drug are not taken, as in they are too low or not regularly maintained, the virus can overcome the drug and become resistant,”Dr Gupta said. While the study can’t say what causes tenofovir-resistant HIV, the researchers found the health of the immune system when treatment begins, and the other drugs in the treatment regimen, are linked to the risk of resistance. “We certainly cannot dismiss the possibility that resistant strains can spread between people and should not be complacent. We are now conducting further studies to get a more detailed picture of how Tenofovir-resistant viruses develop and spread,”Dr Gupta said. More than 69% of people living with HIV worldwide live in sub-Saharan Africa. Just over 3.2% of Nigerians are known to have the HIV virus, however the real infection rate is likely to be far higher as many do not know they have the disease. Only 21% of those infected with HIV in the country currently receive treatment. |

The ultimate show of support or... something else? An Arsenal fan walked up the aisle in full Gunner garb recently after getting the approval of his wife. "My wife is from Woking and she is awesome," he wrote on Facebook. "She let me get married in my full Arsenal kit! Maybe I just got lucky." In another post, the unidentified man wrote: "It's like I won the FA Cup and found the best woman in the world ever." He may have got the thumbs up from his wife, but Extra Time is not convinced.

Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Shiite Movement in Nigeria, has been accused of running a parallel government for over 20 years in Zaria, Kaduna state. Residents of Zaria have reportedly called on the federal government asking to ban the Zakzaky-led Islamic movement from their communities as he brought untold hardship on them for over 20 years. According to Idris Mohammed Baba, the spokesperson of the affected Zaria communities, who spoke at a press conference yesterday in Kaduna, members of the Shiite sect had held people in Zaria and Sabon Gari local government areas of the state hostage with impunity while they ran the parallel government in the country. Moreover, Baba claimed that in May 2015, the Shiites had declared 24 youths persona non grata for challenging their activities in Gyellesu community where Zakzaky resides. “My experience with Shiite followers is disastrous and terrible. At a point, Shiite boys threatened to kill me. There is one notorious Shiite boy call Ali, he is the leader of El-Zakzaky’s notorious boys who accompany him anywhere he goes,”Baba said. The spokesperson further admitted that members of the community were happy with the way the Shiite movement in Zaria was handled by the military about a fortnight ago as “we have fresh air now blowing in our areas.” “Before, we couldn’t grant an interview to the world about the Shiite activities but now, we are sleeping with our two eyes closed. As a community, we wrote letters to the governments about the ungodly activities of the Shiites but no single action was taken. We no longer report Shiites to the police because they will never honour police or security invitation. “These Shiites are authority unto themselves; they don’t respect authority, security and so on. We are Muslims but we discovered that Shiites activities are contrary to Islam. They carry dangerous weapons openly molesting innocent people in our areas. Human rights bodies should also look into our pains by Shiite sect,”he stated. Alhaji Saidu Garba, one of the Gyallesu elders, added that the once booming economic activities in the area had been crippled due to the activities of members of the Shiite sect in the area. “After El-Zakzaky was released from detention in 1999, he came and settled in Gyallesu and since then, there is no peace in our area. We thank Allah for touching the heart of government and the military for liberating us from Shiites untold hardship,” Garba stated. “Shiites killed many of our people who challenged their activities, we buried them and we couldn’t talk to the world because of their threat. We were living like slaves in our own land where the Shiite leader, Sheikh El-Zakzaky came and met us. We residents of Gyallesu are calling on the Federal government to ban Shiite movement in our community and Kaduna state as a whole. Government should put a stop to the Shiite’s ungodly activities in our area,” the Gyallesu elder said. |

A SPOKESPERSON for the Vatican (Roman Catholic) has officially announced today that the second coming of Jesus, the only son of the God, may not happen now after all, but urged followers to still continue with their faith, regardless of the news. Cardinal Giorgio Salvadore told WWN that this years 1,981st anniversary is to be the Vatican’s last in regards to waiting for the Lord to return to Earth. “We just feel Jesus is not coming back by the looks of it.” he said. “It’s been ages like. He’s probably flat out doing other really good things for people somewhere else.” Nearly two thousand years ago, Jesus promised his disciples that he would come again in chapter John 14:1-3 of the bible: “There are many homes up where my Father lives, and I am going to prepare them for your coming. When everything is ready, then I will come and get you, so that you can always be with Me where I am. If this weren’t so, I would tell you plainly” The Vatican defended Jesus’ broken promise, claiming “he was probably drinking wine” at the time when he made the comments. “Having the ability to turn water into wine had its ups and its downs.” added Cardinal Salvadore. “We all make promises we can’t keep when we’re drunk. Jesus was no different.” The church said it will now focus attentions on rebuilding its reputation around the world, but will keep an optimistic mind for the savior’s second coming. |
