OP, what I can assure you is that Tinubu won't get more than 3 million votes through out Nigeria |
— but house shelves motion A recommendation seeking to ensure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), suffered a setback at the house of representatives, on Thursday. Ginger Onwusibe, a lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa north federal constituency of Abia, while proposing an amendment to a motion sponsored by Eze Nwachukwu from Ebonyi, said killings in the south-east were because of Kanu’s detention. The motion sought to forestall the killings in Ebonyi/Ohaukwu federal constituency of Ebonyi state. While moving the motion, Eze said a tragic incident occurred on July 4 where two residents were killed in a marketplace by faceless assailants, leaving several others seriously wounded. He expressed disappointment that security agencies failed to provide proper protection for the market. The lawmaker said despite the several attacks in the federal constituency, security agencies are yet to “adopt workable measures to abate further killing in the area”. But contributing to the motion, Onwusibe proposed that the house should ask Tinubu to ensure Kanu’s release to put an end to the killings in the south-east geo-political zone. “The insecurity situation in the entire south-east is a result of the prolonged detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” he said. He asked the house to urge the president to see a “way of releasing him (Kanu) so as to restore peace in the entire south-east”. But Abdullahi Halims, the deputy majority leader, kicked against the prayer, saying the house should not delve into a matter which is before the court. “The amendment as proposed by my colleague for the release of somebody in detention is a constitutional matter and should not be brought before the floor of this house because it is in the court and (would be) subjudice,” Halims said. “Matters like that are always determined by the court and not by parliamentary decision.” However, Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker, spoke in favour of the amendment, noting that the proposal by Onwusibe sought to find an “amicable way” of securing Kanu’s release. “The motion moved by Ginger was to find an amicable way of resolving the issue with regards to Nnamdi Kanu and to maybe urge the president to use any other diplomatic or political approach, granted that this is before the court, to find a lasting solution on this issue because those of us from the south-east know where the shoe is pinching us,” Kalu, who is from Abia said. Kalu said Kanu’s release would create a “healthy situation in the south-east”. “The amendment is for us to urge Mr president to use political and diplomatic intervention to release Nnamdi Kanu to enable that zone to find a lasting peace,” he added. When Tajudeen Abbas, the speaker, put the amendment to a voice vote, he couldn’t determine if it was the ayes or nays that were louder. “Honourable colleagues, I am unable to ascertain which side has carried the day. So we will suspend the (proposed amendment) to the end. Let me allow other people to propose their amendment,” he said. Usman Kumo, the chief whip, in his contribution, corroborated Halims’ position, saying the matter should not be discussed because it is in the court. “We don’t have any issue with the release of anybody in Nigeria. All Nigerians are very important but let’s please respect our laws. We cannot discuss it,” he said. Kumo also cited order 9 rule 1(5) of the house’ standing order, which states that “reference shall not be made to any matter which the judicial decision is pending, in such a way as might, in the speaker’s opinion, prejudice the interest of parties thereto”. In his ruling, Abbas said the amendment will be decided on next week after “due consultation”. “This is a topical issue, my ruling on this is that I will defer ruling on this at this particular time and I will invite both the minority and majority leaders so that we can consult and see what the point of the law says before I make my own position known,” the speaker said. “So while I rule on other motions and amendments that have been proposed, that particular one is suspended for ruling next week after due consultation.” https://www.thecable.ng/reps-shelve-debate-on-recommendation-seeking-nnamdi-kanus-release/amp |

"Fourthly and curiously, whilst other local and international journalists had previously reported that ALL THE POLITICAL PARTIES tried to outdo themselves by pushing out some false stories, the EU report just singled out the APC. So, were they blind to the antics of the other parties? For instance, was there a single mention of tons of false reports by the PDP and LP that our candidate @officialABAT (who is now President) was evacuated abroad for urgent medical attention at various moments during the campaign when there was no scintilla of evidence to back that up? Is that not ‘fake news’?" Curiously, FFK didn't specifically mention that other party made false reports that his candidate @officialABAT is a Notorious narcotic drug trafficker the city of Chicago has ever known who forfeited over $460,000 of drug proceeds to the US government |

A former national publicity secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has said that comments attributed to APC chieftain Tony Okocha that the party has conceded the ministerial slot for the state to former Governor Nyesom Wike are cheap blackmail. The trending report, which has caught media attention, also accused former Minister of Transportation and the de facto leader of Rivers APC, Rotimi Amaechi, of working against the emergence of Bola Tinubu at the presidential polls. “It is crass irresponsibility and abuse of free speech for any sane mind to mention that just one individual influenced the voting direction of over 200,000 people in a democratic society when it is established that the same individual to whom the praise for electoral victory is being ascribed lost woefully in his very polling unit where his influence should have even begun,” Eze said in a statement signed and made available to reporters in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. He avowed: “Wike suffered a damning defeat in his very primary area of influence-polling unit -yet Tony Okocha and his band of sycophants skewed the facts to suit their own political hustle. “All these and more are stage-managed tricks carefully crafted to rub the Rivers APC and its leadership particularly, Amaechi, in the mud to discredit his good deeds.” The APC party chieftain said it is shameful to see that Wike of the PDP and Abe of the SDP are fighting dirty over who gets the ministerial slot from Rivers State in an APC-led federal government. https://dailypost.ng/2023/07/05/apc-chieftain-slams-wike-abes-show-of-shame-over-ministerial-slot/ |

President Bola Tinubu met with former Senate President Anyim Anyim at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja. Anyim, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation under President Goodluck Jonathan, arrived at the Villa a few minutes before 2 pm alongside former National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party, Olisah Metuh. In 2022, Anyim declared his intention to run for President on the PDP’s ticket. The party later suspended Anyim in March 2023 for alleged anti-party activity when he supported the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru. Meanwhile, Metuh publicly resigned from the PDP and partisan politics in October 2022. In his letter dated October 25, 2022, and addressed to the party’s National Chairman, Metuh premised his decision on medical grounds. Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Senator Anyim said amidst other heart-to-heart discussions, Wednesday’s visit was mainly to encourage and congratulate the President on his inauguration and the successes he has so far achieved. “It was a great honour to pay courtesy to the President and congratulate him, first and foremost, for his successful inauguration as the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and also to encourage and congratulate him for the bold he has taken so far. “We had a whole lot of heart-to-heart discussions, but primarily, it’s to congratulate him,” Anyim said. Also speaking, the former PDP spokesman, Metuh, said although the country had bled for the past eight years, he is confident that the Tinubu administration will achieve national unity. He said “We came to see the President, to commend him for his very good takeoff; the policies he has brought, his inclusiveness, and most of all to canvass for the idea of participatory governance, participatory democracy. “We believe that for policies and programmes, there has to be options and alternatives for those programmes, but only when we are together can we achieve success. “Our nation has bled for over eight years, but we believe that from now onwards, Mr President has shown the way that the country will come together and then we’ll be able to live happily.” https://punchng.com/why-i-visited-tinubu-at-state-house-anyim/?amp |

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has been advised against subjecting candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, to public ridicule without proper investigation. The call was made by the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Calabar, John Edor. He equally stated that a media trial was not the way to go. Recall that, in 2019, JAMB accused an 18-year-old, Kingsley Unekwe, of altering his UTME result from 201 to 269. The Board accused Unekwe of altering his score in order to meet the cut-off points to study Medicine at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The withdrawal of Unekwe’s result made him the fifth person whose UTME scores were cancelled. In 2021, a 19-year-old candidate of UTME was arrested by the police for allegedly tampering with his result. The JAMB spokesman, Fabian Benjamin, said the arrest followed the suspect’s claim of scoring 380 in the examination conducted in June. “After several enquiries, 265 kept appearing as his score as against the 380 score,” JAMB said. A similar situation is playing out in 2023, with Miss Mmesoma Ejikeme, a 16-year-old student of Anglican Girls secondary school in Nnewi, Anambra State, being accused of manipulating her result. A former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili, had earlier demanded for an independent forensic investigation into the situation. Tweeting, Ezekwesili wrote, “This saga between Mmesoma Ejikeme and @JAMBHQ requires an Independent Tech investigation to unearth all facts. Listening to her in this video, it is reasonable to request a forensic investigation to help reveal what really happened. I have reached out to the Registrar of JAMB.” While expressing a similar opinion, the ASUU Chairman, University of Calabar, John Edor, said relevant agencies should be allowed to investigate the matter. Edor said proper investigation would show if Mmesoma hacked into the JAMB portal or not. Edor told DAILY POST that JAMB made the issue a public discussion without proper investigation. He said: “The social media trial is regrettable, and it was originated by JAMB to disown the young student who claimed to have the highest score. “I think that JAMB should be a little bit more circumspect, they should have done due diligence and compliance with due process before bringing it to public space that the candidate forged the result. “If the candidate forged the report, it would imply that the candidate hacked into the JAMB portal, which in itself, would be an indictment on the security of JAMB software. The software does not have the necessary capacity to withstand external invasion. “At this point, I would say we should allow the necessary authorities and agencies to follow due process, investigate what actually caused the variation in result, was the software hacked and by whom? “If it was not hacked, how come there was a difference? Was there a technical glitch on the JAMB software, among other issues? “However, it will be difficult for me to make a complete statement on this issue until the relevant people have a conclusion.” https://dailypost.ng/2023/07/05/jamb-vs-mmesoma-end-media-trial-ASUU-chair-edor-tells-exam-body/ |
