PoliticsRep Wants Nnamdi Kanu Released To End Killings In South-east by Bobloco(op): 9:20am On Jul 07, 2023
— but house shelves motion

A recommendation seeking to ensure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), suffered a setback at the house of representatives, on Thursday.

Ginger Onwusibe, a lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa north federal constituency of Abia, while proposing an amendment to a motion sponsored by Eze Nwachukwu from Ebonyi, said killings in the south-east were because of Kanu’s detention.

The motion sought to forestall the killings in Ebonyi/Ohaukwu federal constituency of Ebonyi state.

While moving the motion, Eze said a tragic incident occurred on July 4 where two residents were killed in a marketplace by faceless assailants, leaving several others seriously wounded.

He expressed disappointment that security agencies failed to provide proper protection for the market.

The lawmaker said despite the several attacks in the federal constituency, security agencies are yet to “adopt workable measures to abate further killing in the area”.

But contributing to the motion, Onwusibe proposed that the house should ask Tinubu to ensure Kanu’s release to put an end to the killings in the south-east geo-political zone.

“The insecurity situation in the entire south-east is a result of the prolonged detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” he said.

He asked the house to urge the president to see a “way of releasing him (Kanu) so as to restore peace in the entire south-east”.

But Abdullahi Halims, the deputy majority leader, kicked against the prayer, saying the house should not delve into a matter which is before the court.

“The amendment as proposed by my colleague for the release of somebody in detention is a constitutional matter and should not be brought before the floor of this house because it is in the court and (would be) subjudice,” Halims said.

“Matters like that are always determined by the court and not by parliamentary decision.”

However, Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker, spoke in favour of the amendment, noting that the proposal by Onwusibe sought to find an “amicable way” of securing Kanu’s release.

“The motion moved by Ginger was to find an amicable way of resolving the issue with regards to Nnamdi Kanu and to maybe urge the president to use any other diplomatic or political approach, granted that this is before the court, to find a lasting solution on this issue because those of us from the south-east know where the shoe is pinching us,” Kalu, who is from Abia said.

Kalu said Kanu’s release would create a “healthy situation in the south-east”.

“The amendment is for us to urge Mr president to use political and diplomatic intervention to release Nnamdi Kanu to enable that zone to find a lasting peace,” he added.

When Tajudeen Abbas, the speaker, put the amendment to a voice vote, he couldn’t determine if it was the ayes or nays that were louder.

“Honourable colleagues, I am unable to ascertain which side has carried the day. So we will suspend the (proposed amendment) to the end. Let me allow other people to propose their amendment,” he said.

Usman Kumo, the chief whip, in his contribution, corroborated Halims’ position, saying the matter should not be discussed because it is in the court.

“We don’t have any issue with the release of anybody in Nigeria. All Nigerians are very important but let’s please respect our
laws. We cannot discuss it,” he said.

Kumo also cited order 9 rule 1(5) of the house’ standing order, which states that “reference shall not be made to any matter which the judicial decision is pending, in such a way as might, in the speaker’s opinion, prejudice the interest of parties thereto”.

In his ruling, Abbas said the amendment will be decided on next week after “due consultation”.

“This is a topical issue, my ruling on this is that I will defer ruling on this at this particular time and I will invite both the minority and majority leaders so that we can consult and see what the point of the law says before I make my own position known,” the speaker said.

“So while I rule on other motions and amendments that have been proposed, that particular one is suspended for ruling next week after due consultation.”

PoliticsNigeria Practising Plutocracy Not Democracy — Falana by Bobloco(op): 7:56am On Jul 07, 2023
HUMAN Rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, has lamented that “plutocracy has replaced democracy in Nigeria,” the effect of which is that “people have lost confidence in the democratic process.”

Falana stated this in a keynote address, titled: ‘General Elections in Nigeria 2023: A Review of the Nation’s Political Culture and Electoral Integrity’, and delivered at the 2023 Law Week Programme of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Benin branch, held in Benin City, Edo State.

Falana urged the NBA to put pressure on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to “address the problems of the late arrival of INEC officials and ballot materials at the polling stations, malfunctioning BVAS machines, and limited or non-transmission of the results from the polling units to Results Viewing Portal, IReV.”

According to him, “out of the 93 million voters that were registered; only 22 million voted in the presidential election.”

The paper reads: “INEC must also address insecurity at some polling units, including violent attacks on voters and officials, voter intimidation, snatching and destruction of voting materials, significant cases of vote-buying, and limited access facilities for persons living with disabilities.

“The Benin branch of the NBA should prevail on the national body of lawyers to convoke a national summit to review the 2023 general elections as soon as the curtain is drawn on the election petitions by the various election petition tribunals, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

“The NBA should ensure that the summit is attended by the representatives of all relevant stakeholders. At the end of the programme, the NBA should collaborate with the judiciary committees of both houses of the national assembly in drafting amendments to the Constitution and the Electoral Act to institutionalise credible elections in Nigeria.

“All mass-based organisations must mobilise the Nigerian people to take their political destiny into their hands by participating in the democratic process.”

PoliticsOgun: Gbenga Daniel Asks Abiodun To Stop His Monthly Pension, Allowances by Bobloco(op): 6:41am On Jul 07, 2023
Former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, has asked the incumbent Governor, Dapo Abiodun to stop the monthly pension being paid to him by the State government.

Daniel, in a letter titled, ‘Request To Suspend My Monthly Pension and Allowances’, Daniel asked that the N676,376.95 pension/allowances he is entitled to as a former governor be suspended.

According to him, the suspension of the pension was in compliance with his conscience, moral principle and ethical code against double emoluments that a serving Senator, who hitherto was a former State governor, shall not be entitled to the payment of pension and allowances from such a state.

Daniel, who is the new Senator representing Ogun East, was inaugurated alongside other Senators on June 13 at the National Assembly.

The Senator noted that he had not benefitted from any welfare packages, be it medical, furniture, transportation and others since he left office in 2011.

The letter addressed to Gov Abiodun read: “I write to request for the suspension of my monthly pension/allowances of 676,376.95 (gross) (Six Hundred and Seventy-Six Thousand, Three Hundred Seventy-Six Naira, Ninety-Five Kobo) being paid as a former Executive Governor of Ogun State.

“This request is in compliance with my conscience, moral principle and ethical code against double emoluments that a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who hitherto was a former State Governor, shall not be entitled to the payment of pension and allowances from such state.

“It would be recalled that on Tuesday 13th June 2023, I was, with other elected Senators and Members of the House of Representatives, inaugurated as members of the 10th National Assembly.

“It is pertinent to also have it on record that since I left the office in 2011, I have not benefitted from any welfare packages be it Medical, Furniture, transportation etc. Thanks in anticipation.”

PoliticsFuel Hike, Other Anti-Poor Policies: A Declaration Of War On Workers - NLC by Bobloco(op): 3:33am On Jul 06, 2023
…Vows not to abandon Nigerians to their fate
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has said the recent hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, commonly known as petrol, and other perceived anti-poor policies were weapons of war against Nigerian workers and masses.

According to NLC, impoverishing workers and pushing millions more into hellish living does not, in any way, approximate sound economic management.

In an address at the opening ceremony of a four-day programme for leaders of the state councils of NLC in the south, taking place in Lagos, President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, said from all intents and purposes, the Nigerian state had declared war on the working people and the masses of Nigeria.

Represented by the Deputy President of Congress and President-General of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, in the programme supported by the American Solidarity Centre, Ajaero, noted that trade union leaders must not abandon the Nigerian people and workers to their fate.

The NLC president said labour leaders across the country “must all join hands in the struggle for the articulation and protection of the rights of Nigerian workers and people with all hope that one day, workers of Nigeria will reclaim their natural rights that have been forcefully abridged and trampled upon by uninformed employers and those in government who ought to have been in the vanguard of guaranteeing such rights.

“Various governments in Nigeria have mercilessly trampled upon the rights of Nigerians without any feeling of remorse. Politicians have ganged up against the workers and the masses without any consequences.

”It is important to note that governance in Nigeria is always spoken about in paradoxical dimensions.
Governments are rooted in the lives of the people and thus ought to pursue service to them but in our nation, governance has become an instrument for inflicting pains and suffering on workers and the masses.

”Recently, we are all witnessed the steep heartless hike in the price of PMS by the federal government under the guise of the so-called petroleum subsidy withdrawal without making alternative arrangements to cushion the expected and well-known impact of such unconscionable action.

“This policy direction ought to have been the product of dialogue amongst stakeholders but was shunned by a democratically elected government which rather believes in machoism that has since left the economy reeling.

“That, clearly shows that the Nigerian State from all corners is clearly at war with the people and workers. They have mounted pressure on the people at all fronts and have robbed the people repeatedly even when the people have turned the other cheek refusing to acknowledge that governance must go hand in hand with social justice if it is to have any meaning.

”This onslaught, comrades, is not relenting and would continue if nothing is done to mediate it immediately.

“It has become exigent that we forcefully bring to the knowledge of our various leaders that rendering many more millions of Nigerians poor could not be an option for punishment.

”Moreover, impoverishing workers and pushing millions more into hellish living does not in any way approximate sound economic management.

“Nigerian workers and masses cannot continue bearing the brunt of ill-conceived policies and outright fantasies of our leaders. The continued sacrifice of poor Nigerian workers so that the rich can continue in their unbridled pleasures is beginning to push events to the edge.

“A nation with a huge number of poor people and an increasing number of the working poor is akin to mega trouble. Growth without commensurate benefits to the people is meaningless. Nigerians, workers and comrades can put a stop to this.

”The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, can halt this manifest mischief. As trade union leaders, we must not abandon the people and workers to their fate. We must not leave anything to chance and we must not sit by and watch this rape continue unabated.

“Among the heart-wrenching and serial atrocities of current employers both in the public and private sectors against Nigerian workers is the continued prevalence of abuses of the rights and privileges of the workforce in the various shopfloors which have gone unchallenged.

“Acts of impunity by lawless employers without recourse to our extant labour laws have all contributed to abridging the rights of our fellow workers in our various workplaces.

”It has suddenly become a passion and a dangerous pastime for employers to trample upon our rights as the creators and builders of the wealth of this nation.

“Across the nation, reports kept pouring in of workers deprived and denied of their basic rights and sometimes denied of their rights to fair and living wages.

”Governments at various levels owe salaries sometimes up to one year and when they manage to pay one month, they applaud themselves openly believing that the payment of earned income to workers is charity extended to workers.”

PoliticsAPC Chieftain Slams Wike, Abe’s ‘show Of Shame’ Over Ministerial Slot by Bobloco(op): 3:19am On Jul 06, 2023
A former national publicity secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has said that comments attributed to APC chieftain Tony Okocha that the party has conceded the ministerial slot for the state to former Governor Nyesom Wike are cheap blackmail.

The trending report, which has caught media attention, also accused former Minister of Transportation and the de facto leader of Rivers APC, Rotimi Amaechi, of working against the emergence of Bola Tinubu at the presidential polls.

“It is crass irresponsibility and abuse of free speech for any sane mind to mention that just one individual influenced the voting direction of over 200,000 people in a democratic society when it is established that the same individual to whom the praise for electoral victory is being ascribed lost woefully in his very polling unit where his influence should have even begun,” Eze said in a statement signed and made available to reporters in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

He avowed: “Wike suffered a damning defeat in his very primary area of influence-polling unit -yet Tony Okocha and his band of sycophants skewed the facts to suit their own political hustle.

“All these and more are stage-managed tricks carefully crafted to rub the Rivers APC and its leadership particularly, Amaechi, in the mud to discredit his good deeds.”

The APC party chieftain said it is shameful to see that Wike of the PDP and Abe of the SDP are fighting dirty over who gets the ministerial slot from Rivers State in an APC-led federal government.

PoliticsAdebanjo To Makinde: Don’t Interfere In Afenifere Leadership Issues by Bobloco(op): 3:09am On Jul 06, 2023
The leader of the Pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo has cautioned Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State against interfering in the leadership issues of the group

Adebanjo stated this while addressing reporters on Tuesday in Ibadan.

Recall that Governor Makinde is making moves to ensure the reconciliation of the two leaders of the group, Pa Ruben Fasoranti, and Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

The governor in a meeting held in Ibadan appealed to the two leaders to unite for the progress and unity of Yorubaland.

Adebanjo, however, cautioned the governor against any attempt to split the group saying he has no issue with his predecessor.

He said, “What Governor Makinde does not know about, he should not interfere. I have no dispute with Baba Fasoranti. He should not be one of those who want to split Afenifere, and that is not what I stand for,” he said.

PoliticsWhy I Visited Tinubu At State House — Anyim by Bobloco(op): 2:10am On Jul 06, 2023
President Bola Tinubu met with former Senate President Anyim Anyim at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Anyim, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation under President Goodluck Jonathan, arrived at the Villa a few minutes before 2 pm alongside former National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party, Olisah Metuh.

In 2022, Anyim declared his intention to run for President on the PDP’s ticket.

The party later suspended Anyim in March 2023 for alleged anti-party activity when he supported the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru.

Meanwhile, Metuh publicly resigned from the PDP and partisan politics in October 2022.

In his letter dated October 25, 2022, and addressed to the party’s National Chairman, Metuh premised his decision on medical grounds.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Senator Anyim said amidst other heart-to-heart discussions, Wednesday’s visit was mainly to encourage and congratulate the President on his inauguration and the successes he has so far achieved.

“It was a great honour to pay courtesy to the President and congratulate him, first and foremost, for his successful inauguration as the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and also to encourage and congratulate him for the bold he has taken so far.

“We had a whole lot of heart-to-heart discussions, but primarily, it’s to congratulate him,” Anyim said.

Also speaking, the former PDP spokesman, Metuh, said although the country had bled for the past eight years, he is confident that the Tinubu administration will achieve national unity.

He said “We came to see the President, to commend him for his very good takeoff; the policies he has brought, his inclusiveness, and most of all to canvass for the idea of participatory governance, participatory democracy.

“We believe that for policies and programmes, there has to be options and alternatives for those programmes, but only when we are together can we achieve success.

“Our nation has bled for over eight years, but we believe that from now onwards, Mr President has shown the way that the country will come together and then we’ll be able to live happily.”

EducationJAMB Vs Mmesoma: End Media Trial – ASUU Chair, Edor Tells Exam Body by Bobloco(op): 9:25am On Jul 05, 2023
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has been advised against subjecting candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, to public ridicule without proper investigation.

The call was made by the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Calabar, John Edor.

He equally stated that a media trial was not the way to go.

Recall that, in 2019, JAMB accused an 18-year-old, Kingsley Unekwe, of altering his UTME result from 201 to 269.

The Board accused Unekwe of altering his score in order to meet the cut-off points to study Medicine at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

The withdrawal of Unekwe’s result made him the fifth person whose UTME scores were cancelled.

In 2021, a 19-year-old candidate of UTME was arrested by the police for allegedly tampering with his result.

The JAMB spokesman, Fabian Benjamin, said the arrest followed the suspect’s claim of scoring 380 in the examination conducted in June.

“After several enquiries, 265 kept appearing as his score as against the 380 score,” JAMB said.

A similar situation is playing out in 2023, with Miss Mmesoma Ejikeme, a 16-year-old student of Anglican Girls secondary school in Nnewi, Anambra State, being accused of manipulating her result.

A former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili, had earlier demanded for an independent forensic investigation into the situation.

Tweeting, Ezekwesili wrote, “This saga between Mmesoma Ejikeme and @JAMBHQ requires an Independent Tech investigation to unearth all facts. Listening to her in this video, it is reasonable to request a forensic investigation to help reveal what really happened. I have reached out to the Registrar of JAMB.”

While expressing a similar opinion, the ASUU Chairman, University of Calabar, John Edor, said relevant agencies should be allowed to investigate the matter.

Edor said proper investigation would show if Mmesoma hacked into the JAMB portal or not.

Edor told DAILY POST that JAMB made the issue a public discussion without proper investigation.

He said: “The social media trial is regrettable, and it was originated by JAMB to disown the young student who claimed to have the highest score.

“I think that JAMB should be a little bit more circumspect, they should have done due diligence and compliance with due process before bringing it to public space that the candidate forged the result.

“If the candidate forged the report, it would imply that the candidate hacked into the JAMB portal, which in itself, would be an indictment on the security of JAMB software. The software does not have the necessary capacity to withstand external invasion.

“At this point, I would say we should allow the necessary authorities and agencies to follow due process, investigate what actually caused the variation in result, was the software hacked and by whom?

“If it was not hacked, how come there was a difference? Was there a technical glitch on the JAMB software, among other issues?

“However, it will be difficult for me to make a complete statement on this issue until the relevant people have a conclusion.”
