Smart Business people prefer having their assets and also getting returns through leverage.

Imagine having N10 million worth of mutual fund at 10%, and you have a business opportunity that can fetch you 15% in 6 months

You can borrow N8 million against your investment at 20%, do the business that will fetch you the 15% or N1.2 million in 6 months.

Payback the bank in 6 months or less, your interest payment will only be 800k. You have made a profit of 400k and you still have your investment of N10 million that will give you a dividend of N1 million in a year

This is just an examples, people make profit of over 25% per annum from business

There is a book that explain more about this that you recommend about Making money with other people's money.

My story.

Bitcoin: W
I sold about $45k worth of bitcoin in the early days of the corona virus pandemic when the price was crashing, I failed to buy back in when the price fell to around $4500-$5000 per bitcoin because I was hoping it will fall further to around $2500-$3000. I eventually bought back in at $7000 and sold when at $11,000. It did crash, to around $9000 about 2 months ago and I bought back in, I sold again at $19000 about 3 days ago. Beautiful year for crypto trading.

Football betting: L
About 3 months ago, I was kind of itching to invest in something new when I stumbled on a website that claims it gave accurate predictions, well I invested about 500k naira in it, I am not really a gambler but I just wanted to give it a try, and I actually won at first, doubled my money. Emboldened by my first win, I went in a second time, this time around with 3 million naira and I lost grin grin
Well even though I was really never much of a gambler in the first place. I am done with football betting now forever, expensive lesson.

US Stocks: W
At the beginning of the Corona virus I had some loose change and was looking to invest in something. It doesn’t take a genius to know that with lockdowns being imposed in many countries, many companies will experience a dip in stock prices because patronage is expected to fall, unless you have a business whose service will become more important during the lockdown. In March I bought 5 Amazon stock on eToro for $1820 each totaling just over $9000, I sold them in September when Amazon stocks was at $3400, I turned $9000 into $17000 in 6 months.

Freelancing: W
My day job is building mobile applications and websites and securing Offshore business licenses for clients. All the money I invest come from freelancing. This is a business that can be done by anyone. Start up costs are low, and with the unemployment rate among young Nigerians particularly so high I believe more of us should look towards getting into freelancing, and with the Naira so weak, earning in USD is basically a super power.

Followed you on that football and lost with you.
Please what's your stack in freelancing.

U are welcome bro !!

Now let me tell u the very same thing I told @rebakah when he had doubt after I recommended NEIMETH @37-39k then.
Hear this;
Before u or any other doubter will see what I am seeing in GSK, the price would've headed past its YtD high of N8.60 and push towards N11.70... it's FVE, using a mix of key valuation metrics that seeks a conservative reward margin but factors in a high risk premium !!

U know go see am. wink cheesy grin ...the reason I mentioned the part in bold.(see post above)
I would've put out a few of my valuation models to spot HIDDEN VALUE, but I don't want to do a long epistle. wink cheesy grin
It's just like NEIMETH and WAPCO when we called for a buy in it. ...those who were only looking at the surface couldn't see it then, until now.

Bull or NO bull, GSK is a very strong BUY @ the current mkt price. ...infact, accumulate !!
I like when people have doubts though. ...I even inculcate it in my strategic play with positioning. wink cheesy grin
I will remind u of this post on the day of reckoning.

Btw, we also hold other great coys.

They do their dairy farming in the Saudi desert. They imported management from Ireland. Imported all their cows (modified breeds). They even had to put AC (air conditioning) in all the farm sheds for all the cattle to protect them from the harsh desert heat which can sometimes reach as high as 45C. Since they can't grow grass to feed the cattle, they bought land in Argentina and the US, grow the grass there then import them to Saudi Arabia to feed the cattle.

All this struggle and stress yet they are able to produce products that in terms of price are competitive in the international market, hence they also export to other countries. If it's Nigerians, they'll come up with 1000 reasons why it can never work and blame the government. Nigerians will be waiting for Dangote or indians/lebanese/chinese. If Dangote does it finally, they'll say it's monopoly. If it's Lebanese or Indian, theyll say it's money laundering.

Fonterra, a dairy cooperative owned by 10,500 farmers in New Zealand makes $12B in revenues exporting milk and other dairy products. That's 30% of the world's dairy exports, from tiny New Zealand.

Chiquita is doing $3B in revenue growing ordinary bananas in South America and selling in US. Dole does $4.5B doing same along with ordinary water melon and pineapple.

Ecuador, Philippines, Columbia, Costa Rica, Guatemala make $3.3B, $1.9, $1.6B, $1B and $1B annually from exporting ordinary banana. Ivory Coast and Cameroon get $340M and $250M from the same banana. Nigerians will be blaming government. Thank God banana is not an electricity intensive business. I wonder what excuse will be given for this. It's labour intensive and we have cheap labour, cheap land and a weak currency, yet we can't do anything.

All these are the kind of things we need in this country, this is what will grow our economy, not coding another ride-hailing app or biscuit ordering app.

Even if we want to do tech, we should go for IT outsourcing like India, not to be coding apps that our people are too poor to use. Where we can use our massive university educated and cheap labour resources to provide labour intensive IT services to companies in the developed world. Instead of them playing Americans $60,000 per annum, they'll outsource to Nigerian companies at quarter that price. This is what TCS, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Wipro and many others do in India. These 4 companies employ 450000 (yes, not 4,500, not 45,000 but 450,000. Four hundred and fifty thousand employees), 242000, 125000, and 175000 people respectively and made $23B, $13B, $5B and $9B in revenues respectively. Over 95% of this revenue is "exports", meaning the money came in foreign currency. And they have over 20 of such companies in India, employing in hundreds of thousands. Imagine we had just one in Nigeria. But no, it's only hotel and filling station we can build. Ordinary call center, we could not do. We had to wait for an Indian company disguised as an "African Company" to come and get BPO contracts from our Telecom companies. That Indian company is employing thousands of Nigerians across several locations today. Only in Ibadan, they have over 2000 staff at their call center. All this while Nigerians blamed the government.

As we talk about making policies for ease of business, we should also ask, making these policies for who? Because it seems Nigerians are not ready to do anything apart from blaming the government.

So sorry to digress oo, back to your post.

I don't like the idea of CBN or government owning enterprises. They should just create policies and try to make things easier. In my opinion, the CBN is really trying, one can get low interest loans through the bank of agriculture and bank of industry. CBN is now the one doing the work of ministry of agriculture.

Even if they must own farms, they should have minority stake of 40% maximum, so that the private shareholders make the decisions. Before some stupid Nigerians enter government and kill the farm by using the management positions to reward their incompetent friends and relatives.

Sir, too much wisdom in your post. Are you an economist or a subscriber of The Economist.

Which of the call center are you referring in the bolded.

And it's not jobs of installing themes O. Advanced jobs like editing plugins to produce specific functionality building out new features and all of that. Op please I beg you in the name of God. Do not listen to this advice. This is demonic advice filled with toxic negativity.

Upwork works. Fiverr works. People don't take it seriously. They apply to 5 jobs and then they don't hear back and come and start whining that it doesn't work. It takes hundred applications to even get 5 interviews. It's a numbers game. Apply to 500 jobs on Upwork in your niche and come and testify. I always advise newcomers on Upwork to keep at least 50000 naira for connects. If you use it judiciously you would be smiling.

I don't know if you know how the tech industry works but no one gets job in tech based on connections especially when it comes down to hardcore competency. Do you know the job of a data scientist and the importance of data science to making sound business decisions. Why would a company want to jeopardize their future based on 'connections'.

As with all things in life, getting a job is a numbers game. You can't apply to 5 jobs and you don't hear anything and give up and start mumbling that there are no jobs. It doesn't work that way. Getting a job is a job. You have to be applying to at least 10 jobs a day to show your seriousness. I don't understand many men know getting women is a numbers game as they can talk to 100 women before they can get one but they can't apply the same mentality to getting a job.

By connect, do you mean internet connection or what?

Investment / Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by brandable: 11:03pm On Jun 29, 2020
onegentleguy:

SCENARIO 1;
The 1st thing u need to ask urself is; would that amount I'd receive from the bank today be worth what I'd give back in 3 yrs?
Put differently, is the N708,508 I get today really worth the N947,880 i'll pay back in 3 yrs?
The idea is to look to ensure that u got a better VALUE from the "weight" btw the funds borrowed and the interest paid at maturity.
Hence, we need estimate the PRESENT VALUE(PV) of that future value(N947,880) u'll pay to the bank at maturity, then compare it to what they're offering u now to see if its a worthy move.

Based on the data u provided;
FV= 947,880
Our interest rate p/a will be a peg that's >/= current inflation rate(@12.4%). So r=12.4%= 0.124 while n= 3.
Now using the formula for PRESENT VALUE, PV= FV/[(1+r)^n)]
Therefore PV= 947,880[1/(1+0.124)^3]= 947,880/(1.124)^3...
which should simplify as approx N667,505
So in essence, that N947,880 u'll pay in 3 yrs is actually worth N667,505 today.
The interpretation of this is that the bank is offering u approx N41,000 more than the actual value.(i.e 708,508 - 667,505)
...which makes it a good deal on the surface.

SCENARIO 2;
What if u were to invest that monthly remittance u'll be paying to the bank(N23,330.70) on ur own, and compound it over the same 3 yr period. ...more like looking to see if u can get that money u'll derive from ur salary deductions to work for u, rather than borrow and work for the money.
...would it be more valuable?
Again, we need to do an estimate but this time, it'll be a different formula... the FUTURE VALUE OF ANNUITY WITH CONTINUOUS COMPOUNDING.
The idea is to find out if u would be better off saving that monthly N23,330.70 in a fixed income instrument(say fixed/time deposit) by estimating the future value of that amount in 3 yrs.
Using the formula for future value of annuity with continuous compounding FVa= CF[(e^rt-1)/(e^r-1)]
where CF connotes ur initial cash flow(i.e N23,330.70)
Most banks will offer u btw 5-6% cap on fixed deposit, so we'll equate r as 6%. Hence rate prorated monthly= 6/12=0.5%... so r=0.5%= 0.005
t is the time period= 36 as we have a 3 yr period compounded in months.(i.e 12x3) while e is the euler's constant.

Therefore, FVa= 23,330.70[(e^0.005x36)-1)/(e^0.005)-1]
Which will simplify as approx 917,945
So FVa=N917,945
The interpretation of this is that ur N23,330.70 @ 6% interested can have a value power of N917,945 in 3 yrs.
Again, notice how this value is N29,935 less than what u would've paid the bank at maturity of the loan.(947,880 - 917945).
Hence, since both scenarios shows u are better off collecting the loan, then indeed, u are better off.
...JUST GO COLLECT THE MONEY FROM THE BANK !!

Hopes this helps.

shocked

I believe there is a technology shift going on.
Almost all European counties have set a date to ban petrol and diesel fired cars. Norway has a set date of 2025..

For vehicles, battery powered cars seems to be gaining rapid momentum as can be seen by Mercedes, ford, hyundai, VW etc all getting on board. I live in a city of 16,000 people and several charging stations have been installed.

For power stations in Europe, before 2020, they will all likely be on green energy.
In North America, natural gas seems to be the alternative now pending when green energies eventually picks up. Very few power companies (maybe 1 or 2) in North America are still romancing the idea of nuclear, but this has not really being going down well with the public. Infact, several European countries are phasing out nuclear power. Lots of nuclear power plant decommissioning jobs in Europe.

I work for a power company outside the country and all our coal plants are getting shut by latest 2030. The replacement are the currently operating hydro, wind and geothermal. Natural gas plant and more wind farms are being built as I type this comment.

Airline and plastic manufacturers might be the only people that would be relying on petrol or diesel, and who knows what fuel cells are being researched for airplanes too.
Bro, that's some scary scenario you just described with respect to how unprepared Nigeria is.
With Dangote refinery coming up, do you think he is making a huge mistake by investing in the refinary, when major first world countries are shutting down refining crude for consumption?

What your own opinion on what Nigeria and Nigerians should do.
