ibechris: Still on the matter, educated people are not rich compare to these daring business guys...in fact,I have them as friends and I can say it boldly.
Whether they inflate invoices or not that is personal to them. Sir, don't generalize like that oo. There are some wealthy lectures in this country. My former project supervisor who is a professor is one of them. I wouldn't know if i didn't relate well with him before he started opening up to me on his life after school and why I should take investing very serious. This was a man that has been investing in Nestle shares when it was selling for below 100 naira. I can with all sincerity tell you that prof is worth hundreds of million of naira. A very simple man that still drives his old Mercedes-Benz. Most lectures are very passionate about teaching that material wealth don't really freak them, but if they tell you the investments they have you wouldn't believe them because they live very simple. Although I agree with you that there are more wealthy self-employed/business men compared to the working class or employee. But saying there are never any wealthy employees/teachers in this country is what I will disagree. |

emmanuelewumi: It depends on you, I invest for cash flow but when crazy capital appreciation occurs I book profit.
Invest in businesses with history of regular dividend payment in the last 10 years, make sure the dividend yield will give you a minimum of 10%, also consider companies that have been growing their profits in the last 5 years. Make sure you don't over pay for any Investment.
Very difficult to time the market, if you do you will just be working for the stock broker. Sir, nice strategy you've got and I appreciate you sharing it with the forum. I would like to ask, since you invest for the cash flow which is the dividend that a company pays and you go for dividend above 10%, if you're in a situation where you invested in a dividend paying stock above 10% and the the stock appreciate in price with return above what you'll get from the dividend, would you sell the stock and lock in profit. Or would you leave it even if the stock is still below it's fair value. |

emmanuelewumi: You cant go wrong when you use dividend yield as your guide
Nigeria Brewery at N140 paid a dividend of N3 that is a yield of less than 3%, international brewery has not paid a dividend in 5 years. How come your stocks ate in the brewery sector are you a Shayo?
Pension fund are invested in stock, they invest in companies that have been paying dividends consistently for 5 years and above.
Dangote Sugar at N10 last year paid a dividend of N1.1 that is a yield of about 11%, with the closure of the border the financial performance improved tremendously currently at N14.00 and will pay a dividend of at least N1.3 which is a yield of 9%
I always tell people not to over pay for an investment be it a property, Stock or a business. When you over pay it takes a longer time to break even, make sure that the cash flow from the investment can pay back the amount invested within a reasonable time which should be a maximum of 10 years . Sir, how are you privy to information on stocks pension fund are investing in? |

emmanuelewumi: That is why diversification is very important, you can convert your N100 million worth of Treasury Bill to cash in less than 24 hours.
Also good to have operate within the confines of the law and have an emergency reserve.
I don't believe in selling an asset or Investment in other to fund consumption, the returns from the investment should fund the consumption or emergency.
You can sell one of your houses to expand your business if the opportunities from the business are enormous.
In 2020, my prayer is that we will not have any cause to sell our assets or Investments in order to take care of emergencies Sir, you've always preached about one diversifying. Let me put this scenario to you. Let say a young graduate between 24-27 years of age, that earns entry-level salary or just started a business that give little returns. If he is to diversify, what percentage of his capital will he allocate monthly for stocks,if he has some knowledge in it, bonds, and treasury bills. I believe real estate will be out of the occasion since it's capital intensive for him at the moment. Awaiting your reply. |

Gerrard59: Well, I've been in similar situations and to be honest, it's not funny. My issue is with you doing nothing for two years. Two years?!?!?!?! Honestly, that's not a nice thing to hear/read. How do you cope during this period? Also, I read that you like the oil and gas industry. Well, no problem with your predilection but the industry is highly competitive and the best of the best compete to get a foot into the sector especially at the entry level stage. Another thing is that people rarely leave the industry to other industries and as a result, you would find persons working in one company or different companies within the industry for a decade or three decades sef! An example is the Head of Total Exploration Nigeria. The man has been with Total since his NYSC in the late '80s! So inasmuch as there are opportunities here and there, the competition is fierce. Seplat that her recruitment this time two years ago had over 42, 000+ applicants for less than 30 slots and some of the applicants I met were exceptional. Some schooled at the best of institutions, one even studied all through his life in the UK and lots of first class everywhere. I implore you to try other sectors provided you fulfil the requirements.
Furthermore, instead of staying at home doing nothing, I advise you find a way or ways to raise money for next year's Stutern's Graduate Accelerator Program for opportunities in the IT industry. Why I'm suggesting this is because the tech industry is egalitarian; no one cares about what and where you studied, and your grades. I know things aren't easy but you need to do something in the mean time which can change your trajectory for the better. Meanwhile, you can keep trying regarding job applications (your CV and cover letter being on point) and know your aptitude tests skills very well. Just know that it's highly competitive out there and these companies can afford to be very picky and select only the best of the best. Last year's PwC's recruitment had ~76, 000 applications for less than 200 slots. . So you see?
Cc: Efe42 Well said Gerrard. To add to what you said, for those planning for stutern graduate accelerator program, I was informed that it will kickoff next year. See attached |

emmanuelewumi: There is big money in Agriculture but the unfortunate thing is that the people and businesses making the money are foreign owned eg Okomu, Prrsco, Chi, Olams and many others.
Agriculture is capital intensive and it is a long term investment, that is why I have issues with the current agricultural High Yield Investment Schemes, whose promoters are not known and profiled by SEC, whose schemes are not registered and regulated by SEC.
Okomu and Presco are owned by foreigners, while Nigerians owned between 35% to 40% shares in these companies. These companies make profit after tax running into billions of Naira.
Okomu is into Rubber plantation and Oil Palm plantation, Presco is also into Oil Palm plantation.
Stanbic IBTC was the issuing house and financial advisors when Presco came to Nigeria, investors have made multiples of their investment.
A lawyer Gbenga Oyebode got about N100 million dividends from Okomu Oil he was one of the early investors when the agricultural firm was privatised by government, you can googgle his name.
Someone like me can only invest in some of the Digital Agricultural investments if reputable Investment Banking firms like Stanbic IBTC Asset Management, FBN Quest Asset Management and others are involved and the investments are register and regulated by SEC.
Presco and Okomu are in Edo State, both companies employ more workers than Edo State government You are right about foreigners most especially Indians and Lebanese being the biggest players the agriculture sectors of this country. Not forgetting Toleram Group who are behind Indomie, Vaswani brothers who are the market leaders of every frozen fish in this country, the Arla guys are giving frieslandcampina guys are tough competition. Same thing happening in the Flour industries, Sunny Verghese and his Chanrai group who are the owners of Olam Group Nigeria is about becoming market leaders in this industries, not forgetting Chagoury Group playing it big also in flour industries. Niyya Farm Group Ltd is also penetrating the juice and yogurt market, Danladi Verheijen, one of the co-founder of Verod Capital Management saw how fast Niyya Farm is growing and keyed into it quickly now he is reaping the reward. I respect these foreigner's patience and long term focus, just recently in an article the Vaswani brothers stated that it took them 13 years before they started making meaningful profit. How many Nigerians, can endure that long? |

I use Java to do some low level work like stealing songs from notjustok becsuse java has thread and i can spin up thread to do more work, JS is single threaded so imagine the headache i will. I always advise to start with a static typed lamguage. I started with c++, only reason I got into programming was because someone played Playstation1 on my comouter and i was curious to study how it works, i was always curious as a child as to how things work. Can java be used to automate things. Like being a bot developer and using API to pull an account. I intend venturing into such sector. |

But what I intend to do is a promise I will fulfill no matter how long it takes. The upcoming generation users of social media need it. Apparently, majority of the present users missed economics classes in secondary school. You're right about the bold. I fall in that category, being science inclined, i had to go for Further mathematics, while Art students pick economics while in secondary school. Now am facing the real world, just realize how important economics is very important in our daily activities. Hence, the reason am ordering for the book next year. Fulfilling that promise in the future will be kind of you. |

The vast majority of social media Nigerians lack understanding of simple economics. They make outlandish comparison. According to these cretins, this lad (I have nothing against him or his work) EARNS more than a banker (permanent staff) because he earns 150K when converted to naira.
