'ENDANGERED SPECIES AS ANOTHER BIAFRAN KILLED BY NIGERIAN ARMY IS LAID TO REST

I have never met Ifeanyi Akaraka before, I have not even heard of his name before his death, but I decided to leave all the way from Port Harcourt to Uloano Amandugwa in Isu LGA in Imo State to pay him last respect because of the circumstances surrounding his death.

Based on the account given to me by the deceased younger brother, Ifeanyi drove from his house to his shop about 5pm the day of the election believing that election was over, he met the 2015 APC deputy governorship candidate in Rivers State, Asita Asita with some soldiers molesting people on the highway in Ahoada East LGA, he reversed his car and tried to leave the scene but he was chased after by the soldiers, he stopped, one of the soldier saw a Biafran flag in his car, he short him twice on the leg for displaying Biafran flag on an election day in Nigeria. They left him there bleeding, he died later in the hospital but not without recounting his ordeal in the hands of soldiers attached to Asita.

That was how Ifeanyi Akaraka, a young man of 35-year-old lost his life to power hungry vultures. When I entered his father's compound for the funeral, I saw people crying and laying curses on his killers, I almost cried while trying to console his wife who is nursing their 3 weeks old baby. According to his younger brother, he was the backbone of their father and the breadwinner of the entire extended family, all hope is lost now that he is no more.

This is not the first time Igbos are being killed by Nigerian army in Rivers State, just few months ago, Magnus Abe also of the APC brought soldiers to look for Solomon Ndigbara, his political enemy and they ended up killing 36 innocent people in Ogoni, 5 out of that 36 persons were Igbo traders in Bori'

Anambra State Government officially rolled out its new police patrol programme, which now involves the use of 50 smart motorbikes with two armed police officers on each of them.

Speaking during the launching of the new initiative at the Governor's Lodge, Amawbia yesterday, Gov Willie Obiano said that the new Motorbikes Unit is to complement the efforts of other security operations and special units already in the State vis a viz;

The Marine Unit, Smart Cars Unit, Patrol Unit, Metro Unit, Malls Unit, Operation Kpochapu and the recently launched Operation Udo Amaka.

According to Gov Obiano, the police men for this unit "have all been well trained and these motorbikes will out run any motorbike on the road and they are in a position to communicate with specific police sand bag areas to make sure that criminals don't escape."

"They will also help us to curb purse and wallet snatching by criminals on motorbikes or okada."

The governor explained that this is the first phase announcing that the second phase will be done by early next year with a plan of "making it 200 smart motorbikes."

"I'm happy that this Christmas period, you are going to be very useful... You are going to go to strategic areas where we know that are prone to little misdemeanours to maintain peace and robustly deal with any criminal activities."

"As you accost people, I encourage you to work professionally, and do things differently," Gov Obiano advised.

The governor used the opportunity to commission an armoured personal carrier donated to the State by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris in response to an earlier request made by the Gov Obiano in that regard.

Responding on behalf of the Nigerian Police, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Sam Okaula thanked the governor for the uncommon gesture promising that the smart motorbikes will be used for the purposes they were acquired.

"On behalf of the Nigerian Police, I thank you very much for this wonderful gesture... You have once again demonstrated your passion for security."

"IGP asked me to assure you that your dream about security of this state will be realised... We will not disappoint you and the good people of Anambra State."

"We'll ensure that these bikes are used for the purpose they have been procured... They have strengthened our resolve that Anambra will remain the most peaceful state in the country," CP Okaula concluded.

The women alleged that soldiers had followed some of the youths who were embarking on a protest, shooting sporadically, killing one and injuring many around Garaje, Kafanchan..

Gov. El-Rufai was at the Emir of Jema’a’s palace, where he vowed to bring to book perpetrators of the protest that led to the destruction of property in Kafanchan metropolis.

Governor El-Rufa’i, after inspecting the extent of destruction, said the dastardly act must not be allowed to continue. He told the Emir to caution the people, especially the youths, against engaging in criminal acts as doing so could attract the wrath of the law. .
