3rd Edition of ANSSI Begins 19th March 2025

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The Chairman of Anambra State Sports Commission, Estate Patrick Onyedum, has announced that the 3rd edition of Anambra Solution Sports Initiative (ANSSI) will begin on the 19th of March and end on the 25th of June 2025.

Addressing newsmen in Awka, Onyedum stated that the briefing was part of the 2025 and the 3rd edition in the series.

'Inasmuch as this is the 3rd edition, a lot of questions are still been asked as to what ANSSI is all about and its relevance to sports development.

'It will interest all of us to know that part of the manifesto of His Excellency, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo was to develop sports from the grassroots

'As a product of school sports, I saw it as the opportunity to actualize Mr. Governors vision, hence the birth of ANSSI.

'ANSSI is a sports competition involving primary and post primary schools, including public, federal, private, and mission, at various age categories (U-12, U-14, U-18).

'I make bold to say that within two years of ANSSI, the State is now the cynosure of all eyes as our athletes have performed creditably in national and international competitions

'Our ANSSI products are scartared all over the world, including the United States of America, Europe, and Asia. In Nigeria here, two of them are enjoying full scholarship from a sports academy in Abuja.

'Our records at the National Youth Games have continued to improve. As of the time ANSSI came on board, the madal haul of the State was not more than 5 gold medals. But as we are sitting here now, we have moved from 7 to 9 gold medals in the last NYG in Asaba. To this end and to maintain the tempo, we have donated sports equipment ( tennis boards, basketball courts, etc to some schools to encourage them.

'Let me also inform you that, as I mentioned earlier, many states are now copying the ANSSI model of going back to schools to bring back the glory days of sports in Nigeria.

'I call on all the participants (officials and athletes) to adher strictly to the rules of the competition.

'This 3rd edition, which will we commence on the 19th of March, 2025 across the 21 LGA and 3 Senatorial zones, promises to be an improvement on the last edition.

'I want to use this opportunity to thank our collaborators, the Ministry of Education. We have to appreciate that without their approval for schools to take part, ANSSI will still be in the incubation stage. We are deeply grateful. To private and mission schools, we thank you equally for your unflinching support. I also wish to thank the various committees (MOC, Sub Committees).

'I also wish to thank members of the press, especially SWAN members, for their continued support.

'For this third edition, we are giving out cash prizes worth more than 15 million naira to various winners in all categories as 11 sports will be competed for.

'This is our score card, and we look forward to having a great and bigger 3rd edition of ANSSI. I want to use this opportunity to call on you to cooperate with us as always and give this competition the best coverage,' he concluded.

Women's Affairs Commissioner Disowns Alleged Recalcitrant Staff, Warns Against Nefarious Acts

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Hon. Ify Obinabo has allegedly disowned one Chinyere Nwofor, a staff of the ministry, whom she said was accused of engaging in illegal activities using the ministry's name.

Addressing newsmen at her office in Awka, the Women's Commissioner said Nwofor was accused of taking a client’s child and property and handing over to her late husband’s relatives.

She noted that it became necessary following a series of voice notes and articles that went viral on the internet, alleging that Nwofor was the one involved in the incident.

She warned the public to beware of certain bad elements in the ministry who dent government’s image through their illegal activities, urging them to report such to appreciate authorities.

She said, 'Chinyere is actually a staff in my ministry. On assumption, I carved out the SGBV unit and deployed some staff there, with Chinyere as the coordinating officer. After some time, I discovered some unholy acts from her and relieved her of the responsibility. For the past one year, Nwofor has not been representing us in that capacity. I also discovered that she was using the ministry's name to perpetrate crimes.
you. I wouldn’t mind going begging on your behalf. If you don’t have the passion to assist the less privileged, we can excuse you.

'You can’t hide under this administration with zero tolerance to rascality commit any kind of offence. Mr Governor is ready to disgrace you anywhere. The era of if you can’t beat them join them is over.

'Meanwhile, those taking advantage of social media to tarnish the image of people to desist forthwith.

'There’s nothing you do on earth that you don’t get reward. I know some of these persons paid to do the job. Tell those hiring you to talk about me that the person is wasting he/her time.

'By the grace of God, I’m too decent to get to that level. If I need help, I beg people, and I know they’ll assist me.”

During interrogation, Mrs Nwofor, however, denied the allegation.

'It is true I took the client to a hotel in Nibo instead of the state office, I had my personal team comprising a lawyer from FIDA, who judged the case,” she said.

On why she never reported the case to the ministry, Nwofor claimed it skipped her mind for the past one year and apologized for the gross misconduct.

Reacting to the development, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Chinwe Achugbu, said the said staff has been queried on several occasions regarding her illegal activities in the ministry, and as at the time of this report, a committee has been set to investigate the matter.

End To Erosion Menace: NEWMAP- EIB Team Inspects Designated Sites In Anambra, Lauds Soludo

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

Following Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s efforts geared towards reclaiming major parts of Anambra State lands ravaged by gully erosion, a team of experts from the European Investment Bank (EIB) assisted Nigeria Climate Adaptation Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB), led by the National Project Coordinator, Engr. Anda Ayuba Yalaks, on Tuesday, 11th March 2025, visited some designated sites in the state to ascertain the level of the environmental degradation caused by the menace.

Some of the sites inspected include: Ndiagu Ikenga Ogidi Gully Erosion site, Nkpor Flyover Gully Erosion site, Ugamuma Obosi Gully Erosion site all in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State and Abagana Erosion site, in Njikoka Local Government Area.

Speaking during the inspection, National Project Coordinator, Engr. Anda Ayuba Yalaks noted that they were in Anambra State on the instance of Mr. Governor to come and assess the state’s readiness to participate in the project or not, saying that they were certain things they needed to confirm to be sure that the state is actually ready, and one of it is the exercise they are doing at moment, adding that they needed to confirm whether the state has some selected sites, whether those sites are priority sites, and whether those sites met the conditions of the criteria to be enlisted as a site.

His words, 'You can see we have visited about five different sites, and all these sites can be said they are candidate sites. What is very much important about those sites is that they are uncompleted sites that have not been completed before now. They are ongoing sites. It is pertinent that anything that has started needed to be completed 100%. The lack of completion was not a deliberate attempt.

'The funding of this project was initially by the World Bank, and this is a project that closed as of 30th June 2022, and the resources for that have been exhausted. The government of Nigeria and with state government both at national and the sub-national understanding the gravity and negative impacts of those challenges with the regards to land degradation did not rest on their aors. They ensure that funding are being secured to continue what has been done before and to complete what has not been completed.

'It is also of importance to note that His Excellency Governor Chukwuma Soludo has the passion and the heart to ensure that these sites are completed and, as part of his campaign promises to the people of Anambra State and he has told them that he has come with hope and not only hope and that he is coming with Solution. I can see that part of the solution is while we are here.

'He is working to ensure that when the project kicks start, Anambra will not be left behind. He is very much aware of the success story that has been recorded under NEWMAP, and he is aware that whatever has been done before needs to scale up, and it is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President.

'He has a renewed hope for Nigerians to have a sustainable environment and an environment that is climate resilience, and at the end of the day, he wants to leave Nigerians with an environment that is climate smart. So this is a project that is the federal government's priority, and that is why the Anambra State government has also keyed in. This funding is coming from European Investment Bank (EIB) .

Yes , people will be calling World Bank because they are used to that. Going forward, the funding will be coming from EIB. It is going to deepen what has been recorded under the World Bank. We are continuing from where they stopped. The project objectives and strategic approach still remain the same,' the National Project Coordinator concluded

Mr . Anda assured that most qualified contractors would execute the projects, adding that there would be no room for unqualified contractors.

Corroborating the National Project Coordinator, the State's Project Coordinator, Professor Philip Ogbonnaya Phil-Eze, said the Federal government Management Unit released criteria to them to prioritized the ones that have not been completed under the World Bank, stating that a total of of 13 different sites have been completed in the state, acknowledging that it was of a very low percentage. He thanked Governor Soludo for paying the counterpart funding and for being proactive and concerned towards the plights of Ndi Anambra.

In their separate speeches, the Chairman of Ndiagu Ikenga Ogidi, Chief Chigozie Etuka, Mr. Obieze Ifeanyi, a victim whose house caved in at Ugamuma Obosi and Chief Okonkwo Nnamdi, Vice President General of Abagana, showered praises on Governor Chukwuma Soludo and NEWMAP-EIB for coming to their rescue, praying God to continue to bless and protect them.

Soludo Clears Air On Latest Ban, Says It is About Noise Pollution, Not Against Evangelism

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The Anambra State Government wishes to address the misconstrued reports surrounding Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo's recent encounter with an itinerant preacher at Onitsha Market. The Governor's remarks were misinterpreted as a ban on evangelism, whereas his focus was on noise pollution, which has been banned by an extant law on
public health.

This was contained in a press release issued by the State's Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor and made available to Newsmen in Awka.

'To clarify, Governor Soludo drew attention to the Public Health Law 2006, which prohibits noise pollution and preaching in inappropriate places like markets using loudspeakers. The governor advised preachers to conduct their activities in churches or designated areas where people can gather and listen to the word without disrupting others’ activities.

'The issue at hand is noise pollution, not evangelism. “Noise pollution” is punishable under *Sections 8(1,4b) and 9(1,2) of the Public Health Laws of Anambra State, 2006. As a matter of precedence, a magistrate court in Nnewi made this law actionable against a church in 2019 (link is attached herewith: https://search.app/xBiq2v7wDBUwvTmE8).

'The public is therefore advised to disregard any claims suggesting Governor Soludo has banned evangelism or public preaching in Anambra State. Instead, we urge citizens to adhere to the Public Health Law and respect the rights of others.

Domesticate National Pension Commission, Review State Pension Law - Sir Nwafor Led Organized Labour Urges Soludo

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The Leader of Organized Labour in Anambra State and the Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Anambra State Council, Comrade (Sir) Humphrey Emeka Nwafor, has appealed to the Governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo to, as a matter of urgency, domesticate National Pension Commission NPC in addition to reviewing the state Pension Law to accommodate the stipulations of the NPC.

The Labour leader who delivered a welcome address in a one-day sensitization workshop held at the NUT secretariat, Awka Anambra state stated that the primary purpose of the event was to enable the state workforce to be abreast of the operations of the new innovative Pension arrangements called "Contributory Pension Scheme, CPS works and what they would be expecting at the exit of service.

'You will recall that the Anambra state government introduced the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in 2014 and 2015, enrolling the state workforce into the system.

'However, since its inception, the leadership of the organized labour has remained actively engaged due to the government's non compliance with the fundamental provisions of the scheme, particularly in the areas of deductions and remittances.

'For six years, 5 percent of worker's salaries were deducted monthly in the name of the CPS, yet these funds were not remitted to the Pension Fund Administrators (PFAS).

'Ever more concerning was the government's failure to pay its statutory 10 percent contribution while continuing to deduct from workers' salaries without remittances. Faced with this anomaly, the organized labour had no choice but to demand the immediate suspension of these deductions until the government addressed the challenges hindering the proper implementation of the scheme in Anambra state.

The labour Bos, however, commended Governor Soludo for stopping the 5 percent deductions.

'Further more, the Governor set up a Committee comprising representatives from both the government and labour to thoroughly investigate and address the concerns raised. The Committee has concluded its work, and its report is currently with the Governor for necessary action.

'Recognizing the need for greater awareness and understanding of the CPS, we deemed it essential to engage the National Pension Commission (NPC) in this workshop.

This platform provides an opportunity for workers to interact directly with experts and gain insight into the benefits, challenges, and operational framework of the scheme.

'It is crucial for every worker to be well informed about their entitlements, the responsibilities of the government, and the roles workers must play to ensure that their years of service culminate in a secured retirement. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Director General of NPC for approving and supporting this workshop, making it possible for us to gather here today. We also acknowledge the unwavering commitment of the State Head of Service, Lady Theodora Igwegbe, mni, for prioritizing workers' welfare.

Sir Nwafor also called on the state government to consider organizing similar sensitization workshops for all workers before reintroducing the CPS ostensibly to enable the workforce to fully understand the innovative pension scheme to foster trust and facilitate smooth implementation.

Also speaking, the Head of NPC in the state, Mrs Chiadika, threw sufficient light on the operational modalities of the Contributory Pension Scheme along with her officials who in turn responded to variegated questions from the audience.

Present at the workshop was the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr.JC Achor who represented the Head of Service and declared the workshop open, labour unit leaders from the organized private sector and university, chairman of NUP, Comrade Ugozor, NULGE, NUT, among others.

Concerned Stakeholders Condemn hatred directed at Awka people, Say it is Antisemitic

Concerned stakeholders in Awka the Anambra state capital have condemned what they called unwarranted attacks at notable citizens of the area by those opposed to the peace, progress and development of the area.

They frowned seriously at what they noted as mounted attacks and campaign of calumny against the person of Ozo Jeff Ezechukwu Nweke
!Ozo Zuluezu) who in clear terms is motivated by jealousy, trepidation and savagery.

The people took their position on Thursday in a statement jointly signed by the Coordinator and Secretary, Amobi Okeke and Elder Samuel Onwuka and made available to newsmen in Awka, the state capital.

According to them, "Trepidation in the sense that they thought that by now Awka lands ought to have been a national cake where land thieves will come and grab as they wish and because they didn't have that chance thus the hatred."

They declared that, "It is time for all
Awka citizens to wake up and collectively put a stop to this act of injustice, character assassination and intimidation these small towns around us are perpetrating on one of our own."

"Now, the detractors are on it again. The haters of Awka have started their nefarious activities once again. Our illustrious son, a major stake holder in Awka town, an Ozo titled-chief ,Ozo Jeff Ezechukwu Nweke Jonny was invited home by the Ezinano community in Awka to come and rescue them from the grabbing of lands by the surrending towns.

"He did come back as requested to answer a clarion call by his people, and just like his father, he retrieved all the stolen lands and handed them back to the community. Further, he established a security outfit fully registered under the state government for sole purpose of complimenting the efforts of the state government in maintaining peace and order in Awka. And these were his offences."

"An event that took place sometime last year is what the detractors are trying to use against him for no just course. Thus repeating exactly what was done to his father without any form of evidence, just based on hearsay, fabrications and fallacies."

According to the group, "It wasn't a hidden news when one Mr Benjamin Ezemma (Big Ben) a well known real estate mogul, co-founder of Dubai Estate Awka was kidnapped precisely on the 12 day of November 2024."

"Heavy sporadic gun shorts were heard on the express around 7.00 pm to 7.00pm tentatively towards the front of MAX B Hotels. Just before long it was heard that it was Big Ben that was kidnapped. Information also had it that he was coming from a meeting from MANGO AND LION HOUSE at S.M. Okeke Avenue."

They maintained that, "what is going on is that some security agents that are being used by this same haters of Awka are trying by all means to enrope Ozo Zuluezu in the matter simply because the young man that was kidnapped was coming from a meeting with him when everyone knows what the security situation was like at the point in time.

"No one is saying that the security agents shouldn't do their job but let it be done thoroughly especially now scientific security gadgets and cameras are available.

" The people are, therefore, demanding for a clearcut proof from the security agencies of evidence that our own son, Jeff Ezechukwu Nweke is involved in the kidnap saga and not to base on gossips, insinuations, personal vendetta and fallacies of the detractors to conclude a delicate matter such as this.

"Ozo Jeff Ezechukwu Nweke is a man full of positivity, intelligent, articulate, philanthropic and yet a dogged fighter.

We will not fold our arms and watch an innocent man be roped into what he knows nothing about."
