Tribalism is just one reason for war. And as you point out, tribal wars were fought amongst the British, and Europe as well. In Britain's case, the outcome of such wars whittled the hundreds of kings that ruled the Isle down to the one we have today. And even in my lifetime, it was not unusual to see house for rent adverts stating "no dogs, no blacks and no Irish".

You may not be talking of war, but tribalism is historically one reason for war, as seen by that between the ancient tribes of Wessex and Essex, and what happened in Rwanda.

That's how bad tribalism can be.
