In school one day, teacher said we will all have to introduce a word in our local language to the class so should get our parents to teach us one.

Easy, you'd think, except ma was away all week training to be a nurse and had instructed my siblings and I not to squeek while dad was studying lawyer or its our fault if he failed, again, emphasis hers, so buda never asked.

Day comes. Students from France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Turkey Cameroon, Ghana, London, Jews, everywhere, all stand and say a word in their local language then it's buda's turn. buda stands proudly and says "Finito. It means finished".

Teacher look buda one kind eye and goes, "Finito is not a Yoruba word!"

I learnt my Yoruba from age 7 with those books when my cousin came from village and brought them all. Makes me wonder why I never picked any Yoruba up from my parents talking it that the only Yoruba I knew was finito - dad's favourite word after supper. I was 5.

Women oppression is not a belief but a fact. Some are old enough to tell you how daughters earned an income to send their brother's to school. Even this thread is evidence of female oppression. Imagine proposing women are kept by men in this day and age when the woman can go earn herself. Would such people not propose not educating their sister or daughter because what would they need educating for when some man will keep them?

You call that rough, lol. Add walking from Onipan to Ketu to save school bus fare and you'd be getting close. I once paid for half a book because I did not have enough for a whole book. The bookseller gave me a discount for the first 50 or so pages that were missing. I was so happy I got like 500 pages even though I never knew the beginning.

As bad as it seems we still had people come crying to share the little we had because they had much less. I used to be angry when ma gave them my egg and coke money for their child's schoolfees or hospital bills because I'd have less for books. Funny now how my monthly budget for other peoples children's schoolfees exceeds my annual book budget.

I look back at my childhood and can't remember much except for the books. J.H Chase, Enid Blyton and books from the African Writers Series

I used to keep a list of books I read hoping to one day read them all again but found I'd moved on from such books and could only read a few with much struggle.

Perhaps see book as rafts.

In fact statistics have shown that in developed countries women tend to gravitate towards degrees that are less stressful, while their counterparts in developing countries gravitate towards more stressful degrees due to the responsibility bringing their families out of poverty.

Actually, what he said is crap. Women operated in a male dominated world that oppressed women and limited them to certain roles and the op is now portraying the result of that oppression as some sort of norm. He'd be doing the same if he looked at all the slaves on an 18 Century American plantation and claimed statistics show slaves can be nothing but slaves!

No one is designed for a role apart from that of procreation, and there is not one single job a man can do that a woman can't do. You are however welcome to prove me wrong.

There's hatred and then there is free speech. US conservatism seems to be similar to all other religious fundamentalists. They are unable to live by themselves whilst allowing other views be. They seem to revel in extreme hatred for the other side, and expect to be able to express that hatred in the name of free speech.

The whole problem is that they want to be able to incite violence, perpetuate lies and say things like 'ethnic minorities deserve to die', think this is free speech, and expect it not to be censored.

They are not Conservatives but fascists who think we will not see the evil that they represent.
