The Internet, mobile devices and advanced communication technology all contribute to increasing your productivity. Ideally, these developments allow you to work faster and achieve more each workday. Even if you are on the road, you are able to check on your emails, view the progress of your current projects, communicate with company executives and clients, and even close deals. Having a remote job means the same as telecommuting, working remotely or working from home. Essentially, it means that you are working from your desired location instead of in an office. Telecommuting is an option that new graduates, young professionals and senior people who have retired but are still capable of productive work. Some people consider doing part-time or full-time telecommuting. Does having a remote job hurt your career? Will you be considered a slacker if you work from home? If you are practical and a forward-thinker, the answer to the question is a no since there are many ways in which you'll still be very productive and be an essential part of an office or a department. It means that it is your attitude towards working that will be the gauge on how effective and productive you'll be. You can use video conferencing, various communication technologies like emails and social media to stay connected with your office and colleagues. In the modern business setting, speed is essential and more often, most people are needed to be on their job throughout the day, every day of the week. An increasing number of companies offer flexibility programs in their workplaces for various reasons. Advantages of working remotely Offering remote jobs is advantageous for workers and business owners. In many cases, employees become more efficient and productive when there is no traditional office setting and office hours. Workers become happier as well, particularly parents who want to supervise their young children. Here are more benefits for business owners and workers. 1. Commuting time is reduced Employees often complain about the unpleasantness and stress of commuting due to heavy traffic, cost of fuel and pollution. Without needing to commute to work every day, employees become happier. The business is given a boost as healthy and happy employees contribute to their productivity. It also reduces absenteeism. Moreover, allowing them to do their jobs remotely reduces their cost of travel, giving them more money to spend on other essentials. 2. Greater retention of employees There are employees that offices do not want to lose. Offering them a remote job can help retain them. It is beneficial to small business owners as well who cannot compete in terms of salaries and benefits. They have the chance to access employees with the experience, capability and skills they need without paying them a premium. Many employees who do not want to be tied to their desks welcome the freedom to work on their own that small business offers them. 3. Option to choose and use better talents Large companies cannot afford to hire and fire employees at will. If they embrace workplace flexibility, they have the option to choose from and work with highly skilled talents who are not interested in full-time jobs. Businesses can hire talented workers regardless of commuting distance particularly for jobs or locations where there is a shortage of skilled individuals. 4. Gives employees autonomy Offering employees the chance to telecommute allows them to work at their own pace. There are people who are not suited for desk jobs. While some people want the order and routine of the environment inside an office, other people, especially the younger ones, are not adaptable to it. If they are allowed to control their own work environment, they become more effective workers, efficient and productive. Creative employees often produce their best work when they are located elsewhere other than an office. Some of them do not mind what time or how long they work. Although you offer some employees remote jobs, it is still important to set rules, guidelines and schedules for your team to follow. 5. 2019 has been a very interesting year for literature. Especially, for literature in translation. This year, we’ve enjoyed releases from newcomers, as well as long overdue translations of great books by celebrated groundbreakers (Sam Bett’s translation of Star by Yukio Mishima, is an example). We’ve also been able to rediscover works by The Spirit of Science Fiction, by Roberto Bolaño, a “lost” book, or the poetry of Aurora Caceres, a Peruvian writer who had a fate similar to that of Lucia Berlin: Suffering under the prejudices of her age and getting rediscovered and deservedly praised after death. There have been experimental releases, such as The White Book, written by Han Kang and translated by Deborah Smith, and structurally less intrepid, but thematically bold books, like Anne Serre’s The Governesses, translated by Mark Hutchinson. As writer Neil Gaiman once wrote: “Books are the way that we communicate with the dead. The way that we learn lessons from those who are no longer with us, that humanity has built on itself, progressed, made knowledge incremental rather than something that has to be relearned, over and over. There are tales that are older than most countries, tales that have long outlasted the cultures and the buildings in which they were first told.” Mutual understanding and empathy are at the heart of literature, and the translator is the key facilitator of this understanding across languages and cultures. That’s why, at Day Translations, a language services provider serving writers and publishers for more than a decade, we invite you to submit your nomination for the most evocatively translated book of 2019, at the Day Awards. The Day Awards, to be broadcasted on International Translation Day (September the 30th), are our way of giving back to our industry, our communities and those who enjoy foreign art and culture in all its genres and formats. www.nairaland.com/attachments/10002799_joshuafullertidageogsunsplash_jpega637f4647f0521787ac446b773deac8f Are you interested in translation work? Are you thinking of becoming a certified translator soon? Becoming a successful translator can be a challenging task but very rewarding if the right market and languages are pursued and if you know the highest paying translation languages. Requirements In order to find a high paying translator job, you must not only be fluent in a particular language but you must fulfill rigid requirements in the academia. A strong academic record showcasing the complete study of a foreign language can increase your worth in the translation market. Apart from this, you must also fulfill the requirements of the market in which you would like to work. For instance, a translator with strength in both Japanese and English who wishes to work in Japan must be able to secure all the necessary working permits in order to establish his or her practice there. Countries differ in working permit requirements so it is best to check with their respective embassies. Another factor would be the importance of networking. In order to successfully make a name for yourself, you must build rapport and relationships among colleagues and clients. Most freelancers are able to get more translation gigs through word of mouth or referrals so it is advisable to keep a steady, growing network in tow. Building a network is not always easy but you may start by joining organizations that can bridge you closer to those specializing in the same field. Competition calls for specialized fields Complete fluency and intense comprehension notwithstanding translators must be aware of the competitiveness in their respective fields. It is advisable to focus on specializing in more than one field in order to open up doors for opportunities. The most popular fields include finance, medical, and law but studies show that pharmaceutical translators are also in high demand these days. Regardless of what field you decide to practice, you must have an excellent grasp about the particular business as well as a high understanding of both the culture you will be assisting and the linguistics involved in the translation. Having technical or professional experience in the field you are specializing in is definitely a big advantage for a translator. Most translation companies will actually prefer this. Japanese, Arabic, Danish, and Chinese (highest paying translation languages) Now that you know what sets a successful translator apart from others, you might be wondering what languages pay the best rates? The answer would have to depend on location. Your location (and experience) determines the amount clients will be paying you but the past years have revealed that Asian and Middle Eastern languages are the highest paying languages in the translation world. The most in demand languages in the United States are Japanese, Arabic, Chinese, and Danish. Translators specializing in these languages have better opportunities increasing their paychecks through time. Consequently, the lowest paying are Italian and Portuguese, which may be attributed to the rise of such speakers in the United States for generations now. Other European languages such as Spanish, French and German continue to remain valuable in the market because of the many immigrants in the United States. Most of the highest paid translators have solid resumes with proven abilities backed up by professional experience and referrals. In terms of salary, you can expect anywhere from $70,000 to $175,000 per annum for in demand languages. Many freelance translators, on the other hand, have earnings reported at $60,000. Advice for aspiring translators Whether you are already bilingual or are on your way to perfecting a foreign language, being a successful translator will depend on your ability to quickly, accurately, and efficiently produce a solid output. This process involves an excellent grasp of the industry you want to specialize in, your inquiries into the culture you are assisting, and your level of articulation in the chosen language. Choose to learn the language that is right for you. If you have already taken a beginner’s course in Spanish some time back, you may want to pursue Spanish for it might be easier to learn than others. If memorization is an issue for you, stick to a language that uses an alphabet and numeric system you are familiar with. Other factors that may influence your chosen language may be location and economic situation. Interests can also influence your desired language. For instance, those wanting to delve into business may have more reason to learn Chinese. Translation is an essential part of communication. Regardless of your chosen language and specialization, there are jobs waiting for you. Source: www.daytranslations.com Image Source: Joshua Fuller (unsplash) |

www.nairaland.com/attachments/9981915_whatarethemostimportantlanguagesofthe21stcentury_jpeg325c68d8b67606baecd4aa96301f6bea It's hard to imagine a young person nowadays who doesn’t speak or study at least one language besides their mother tongue. Globalization forces so many people to communicate and cooperate more in a variety of businesses. But, what are the most important languages of the 21st century? From academic collaboration and professional networking, to transport and traveling—the modern world simply requires us to use different languages. But there are more than 7,000 languages worldwide and it seems difficult to pick the most important languages. But, it’s not really that confusing, as only 23 languages account for more than half of the world’s population. And, of those, the following 10 could be considered the most important languages. Most Important Languages to Study When you think about the languages you would like to learn, consider your future plans and think about how you see yourself in the coming years. Language experts from Aussiewritings.com often say that language learning depends on personal preferences and practical reasons to master a language. So, you shouldn’t decide the most important languages simply by chance. If you need help to decide, here are some very good reasons to learn these 10 most important languages: English More than 375 million people are native English speakers. But as many as 1.5 billion use it to some extent. English is the most influential in the world by far, making one of the most important languages. Being essentially the mother tongue of the internet and computer technology, English is omnipresent globally. It is also important to add that it’s the official language in the U.S., Great Britain and Canada, which are all on the list of the world’s 10 biggest economies. Chinese/Mandarin There is not a single language in the world with more native speakers than Chinese. Namely, 982 million persons are native speakers, while altogether 1.1 billion people know the Chinese Mandarin dialect. Though the vast majority of people use it in China, the country is so powerful globally that this language certainly deserves a place among the most important languages. It seems like China will become the world’s leading economy by 2050, which also means that it will become even more influential worldwide. Spanish Spanish is also one of the most widespread languages. There are around 330 million native speakers, while more than 420 million use it at least as their second language. Spanish is the primary language in more than 20 countries, the majority of which are situated in Latin America. However, it is very important in the U.S. as well, since around 35 million people in this country use Spanish at home. Japanese Another Asian language is on the list of most important languages due to this country’s economic strength and influence. Around 127 million speak Japanese natively and one more million use it to some extent. Though it seems difficult to comprehend its symbols at first, Japanese is a beautiful language and not much more demanding than many European counterparts. It’s not too popular outside Japan, but chances are you’ll need to learn it if you're dealing with information technologies and other modern industries. German Germany has been Europe’s most dominant economy for decades and its language is the most spoken in the European continent. Along with 105 million native speakers, there are also 80 million people around the globe who use it as their second language. This language sounds rather serious and authoritative, which perfectly mirrors the country’s determination to keep the position of one of the global powers; and stay on the list of the most important languages! Russian Russian is the native language of some of the world’s best novelists, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy, which is more than good reason to start learning it. In addition, more than 150 million people speak Russian as their primary language and an additional 110 million use it on a non-native level. This makes it one of the most important languages, as it is extremely influential among all Euro-Asian countries. Russian has the status of the official language in 38 territories. French French used to be the primary language of diplomatic discourse for centuries. Today, 79 million people primarily speak French, but the overall number of speakers climbs up to 370 million, which really proves how important this language is. Of course, France is still the sixth biggest economy in the world and Paris remains a genuine cultural epicenter. And keep in mind one more detail—French is widely considered to be the language of love, which means, it has to be one of the most important languages! Arabic This is the official language of the Arabic League, which consists of not less than 22 countries. There are more than 205 million people in this region but the language gains additional strength from another 100 million non-native speakers worldwide. No need to stop there—Arabic is the liturgical language of an entire Muslim civilization, which spreads its influence to around 1.5 billion people. So, this fact alone makes Arabic one of the most important languages on the planet. Hindi Hindi is the standardized language of India and several other surrounding countries. Its 450 million primary users and additional 200 million non-native speakers make Hindi the forth most spoken language on Earth. But its relevance also lies within the power of country’s economy. India is the seventh largest economy in the world and is expected to grab second position by 2050. Portuguese More than 215 million persons speak native Portuguese, while there are 235 million speakers in total. It’s the primary language in Portugal, Brazil and seven other countries, and is often considered the major language of the Southern Hemisphere. Which makes it one of the most important languages to know. This list of the most important languages is based on the number of speakers and their influence in the modern world. But in order to decide what language to learn, you need to consider both the issues of practicability and likability. You will only master a language if you truly enjoy it, so pay attention and choose according to this criterion, too. Source: https://www.daytranslations.com/ |
www.nairaland.com/attachments/9974932_cassiegallegos1268205unsplash_jpega2d520c2d2db5320f58484661da926e0 TIPS FOR FIRST TIME TRAVELERS TO AN UNFAMILIAR COUNTRY Traveling to a country that you are not familiar with can be both exciting and frightening. The thrill that comes with doing something for the first time is totally unmatched. At the same time, not knowing what to expect upon arrival can also make you feel anxious. In order to lessen your worries, here are tips for first time travelers to an unfamiliar country. PREPARE EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR YOUR TRAVEL • Make sure that you bring all your travel documents with you. Be familiar with the immigration laws to avoid problems upon arrival. Book your travel ticket months ahead of the trip and reserve local transportation as well. Of course, don’t forget to look for a comfortable place to stay. • Pack appropriate clothes. Research about the type of clothing that people in the place usually wear. Avoid wearing clothes that are deemed as impolite in that country. • Bring extra snacks with you. Place some in your luggage and the others in your hand carry bag. You might get very hungry during the trip especially if it is a long one. The snacks can also sustain you until such time when you can find a local restaurant that you are comfortable with. • Be familiar with the restrictions in certain countries. When traveling to Thailand for instance, you are not allowed to bring Buddha images with you. In some Arabic countries, bringing non-Islamic religious items is not allowed. • Learn the local languages. Just learn the basics such as saying, “Thank You” or “I am sorry.” It is also important to know how to say the correct words especially if you have food restrictions that might be included in your order. • Bring cash and credit cards. In some instances, credit cards would help a lot. However, in some countries where credit cards are not accepted in several stores, be ready to have cash with you. WHAT TO DO UPON ARRIVAL Look for a reliable money changer. It is advisable to change money to the country where you are going to rather than in your home country as the rate might be different. Money changes in your home country might also not have the currency that you need. In terms of rates, you need to know the exchange rate for the day to avoid being fooled by money changers. • Do not give your luggage to anyone who offers help or just take a local taxi service if you don’t think they can be trusted enough. In some countries, cases of stolen bags are very rampant since some tourists think those who took their bags were porters. Others have also experienced taking a taxi that charged them twice the original amount or exorbitant fees. • Look for a local telecom shop. Find out how you can easily communicate back to your home country or to the person you are with in case you get lost or something is wrong. Inquire about internet access inside and outside your hotel. ENJOY THE ACTUAL TRIP • Try out some street foods or local cuisines. It won’t kill you to give them a try. As long as you see how the food is being prepared and you buy only fresh meals, it is fine. • Interact with the locals. Have small chit chats to learn more about their culture. If you can’t understand them, just smile and nod. • Be polite. From the way you talk to the way you dress up, you need to move in accordance to the customs and traditions of the country. If you can try out their local costumes or have fun with their street performances, go ahead and do it. • Don’t miss landmarks. If the country has a special landmark or an interesting activity that you must go to, you really should. You might not be back to the country again so you have to make the most out of your trip. With these tips, traveling to an unfamiliar country for the first time is not that terrifying at all. https://www.daytranslations.com/blog/2014/01/tips-for-first-time-travelers-to-an-unfamiliar-country-3744/ |

Why do we have too many jokers in the land? In this country, there are too many talking heads, even when they do not understand what they are talking about. For a start, what are our national values? If they actually exist, how do all the funny creatures we have in leadership positions support or promote those national values with their conduct and mindless stealing? So we really believe that the Big Brother show in one way or the other alters people's values, to the point of moral decadence, if there were actually good values in the first place? Any data to support such assertion? Again, it's a very weak argument to place entertainment and education on the same level, both mean different things to people. Governments don't sponsor big brother show, so how does that stop them from funding education and research? Is it really possible to legislate on morality? And how realistic is it to force everyone to watch only educational and religious programmes; what happened to individual's ability to pursue happiness or make choices? This thing called democracy is really too sophisticated for our people to practise. And the more people want to spend energy, lecturing others on morality, the more you see how shallow they are. |
