Obamacare: I dont know if my company remits my tax cos I dont have a tax card and it already too late to request for one. So i will be taking my chances. But there is tax deduction on my payslip. What about that?
@umehmart, that is progress.

@Obamacare, Well . . . The tax clearance thingy falls under the Supporting Document Category. Any other document your consider an added to your application falls under this category hence your are still good to go even if you do not have any document under this category, so far you have all the required documents/criteria, authentic and well packaged. Over syllabus no dey pay at times.
I think the tax deduction information on ur pay slip is also a good indicator. Some companies also use tax consultants who could give you a memo/letter or something like that, which could also be used (Pls exercise restraint sha).

@ogbeche77,@mercylicious. I would further make issues clearer soonest.

For the benefit of those at the verge of submitting there application, I would like to quickly skip some pages in my writeup and list the documents I submitted for VISA application hoping it would provide direction for someone out there.

It is not but definitely a strong document to solidify your application. I actually didn't use a tax clearance certificate, but did a print out of my profile page on the Lagos State Tax Portal (http://www.lasg-ebs-rcm.com/) showing my tax history. I also included my Lagos State Tax Card in my application.

because it is what I I saw on the VAC site when I entered my ref number
You could as well just start migrating in the direction of 16,billings way. Just keep refreshing that page, the status would soon change to "your bla bla bla is now ready for collection" in no distant future (hopefully b4 noon). At least based on my own experience.

After a long wait both from the school and supervisors, I decided to do some reminders. Find sample below

Good day,

Mail trail refers. Kindly update me on the status of my Graduate Progam, XXXXXXXX , XXXXXX program application as I am yet to be updated my application status and the online portal still reads "No Decision Yet" on my profile.

Thanks for your usual assistance.

I received replies like

Hello,

In review of your account no decision has been made. When a decision is made it will be posted on your profile.

Regards,

Office of Admissions

but still no reply from the Supervisors. To cut the story short, updates began to arrive,

3rd preferred school
Program Decision
XXXXXX Reviewed - unsuccessful
2nd preferred school
Program Decision
XXXXXX Successful (Research Based Masters offered)
1st preferred school
Program Decision
XXXXXX Successful (Course based Masters offered due to unavailability of interested supervisor but with an option to convert to the Research based equivalent after the 1st semester).

Learning points:
1. There are clearly several and even better ways to some of the methods I adopted.
2. The Journey could be tedious and sometime tiring, but don't relapse and try not to procrastinate
3. Have a working plan with well outlined milestones
4. Ask a lot of questions, better to look foolish than to come out stupid
5. Maintain a lot of correspondence if you can with every stakeholder
6. I would advise you apply to more than one school, and even more than two. It could be expensive but I think it is wise
7. I strongly believe that victory to not always to the strong neither is favour always to the wise . . .

This closes the Chapter on my admission paroles. VISA application chapter continues shortly. Also, I would try to attach sample SOPs subsequently. . .Happy reading

ogbeche77 to answer your question, I went on to mail a number of supervisors requesting to be considered their research students. This was after I had already applied for admission to the various schools.
Here is a sample mail I sent to the supervisors

Dear Sir,

I, XXXXX with Refno: XXXXX, an applicant to the XXXXXXXX program, am writing to ask if you would be willing to be my graduate supervisor.

I am an XXXXXXX graduate and currently working as a XXXXXX in a Telecommunication Services company in Nigeria. I aspire to further my career in the areas of Business Intelligence and XXXXXXX hence, my choice of applying for a graduate program in XXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX.

I became highly fascinated by the information I gathered over the internet about your profile, research experience and areas of research interest specifically in the area of XXXXXXXXX as it aligns greatly with my research interests and aspirations. I believe it would be a fulfilling and rewarding program working with you through the graduate program.

I hereby request that you consider to be my graduate supervisor if hopefully I am offered admission into XXXXXXXXXX program. I attached here my Resume and Statement of Purpose for your perusal.

Thank you for taking time to consider my request.

Regards,

This went out to a number of professors in the various schools I applied to. I cannot remember receiving any reply from the supervisors on my request.

I also sent out mails like the one below to confirm the arrival of some docs such as academic reference forms and transcript that I sent to Canada via courier services.

Dear Sir/Ma,

I am an applicant to the XXXXXXXX , XXXXXX program.

My detail is as listed below:

Surname:
Given:
Refno:
Program Code:

I since sent all required documents to the XXXXXX Admission Services address; I would like to confirm if all my required documents have been received and possibly the status of my application.

Thank you in anticipation of your kind response.
TravelRe: Travelling To Canada-part2 by bumdish: 5:32am On May 23, 2012
With my school options clearly outlined, I went on to gather the documents required for admission, documents like:
Academic Transcript,
Application fees,
Contacted my referees about my plans (2 University lecturer and 1 career supervisor),
Statement of Purpose,
Resume (Resume was revamped to reflect my academic achievements and capabilities),
and filled the necessary forms (some downloaded form while others where online forms )

and then applied to the first 3 schools in my list, all research based masters. One thing I also did was to google for Nigerian and non-Nigerians students who were students of those schools telling them about my intentions and seeking their advice on other steps I needed to take in securing admission and possibly getting a supervisor.

Here is an excerpt of a sample mail I sent to a student

Hello Good day,

Compliments of the season to you.

I got your contacts on Nairaland and I have been a follower of the "Travelling to Canada" thread.

Hope you are doing great over there. I would like to make inquiries from time to time and I hope you would be disposed to that.

Currently, I have submitted my application for XXXXXXX, Bleep Fall session at the XXXXXXXXXXXXX.

I attached here screen prints of my admission portal details. I would appreciate your advice on what my next steps should be and how long it might take to get a response/decision from the school.

Here is a typical response I got

Got ur mail.I would suggest you mail a professor in the dept whether he/she can be ur supervisor since u are coming in for a MAsc progree. If you can get a profeesor that will accept you as a research student that makes the whole exercise easier.
If u didn't get the consent of any professor before you applied then your file has to go around before they can decide on your admission.

This is my phone number xxxxxxxxx for any further enquires.
my university email is XXXXXXXXXXX
Thanks

Obamacare: SO WHATS THE MEANING OF ALL THESE YOU ARE USING TO CONFUSE PEOPLE NOW?
Hi Obamacare, I don't intend to confuse anyone just in-case it my info comes out as such to you. I consider my effort to share my experience here one way of giving back to a community that has blessed me so immensely. I intend to share the good, the bad and the ugly decisions I took hoping it would add up to the knowledge base the community continues to provide. In any case, I am not oblivious of the fact also that one man's meat will always end up being another's poison.

Like everybody, I started off by deciding on a graduate course that would match both my short and long term goal. At least, I wanted to move to the next big thing on my career ladder. As a techy, I needed a course that would keep my experience very relevant but with an eye on business side of technology so as to create a real competitive advantage. Armed with my decision, I went all out in search consulting people and of course the internet on the Institutions that would match my need in terms of reputation, academic quality and course availability.
I started out by drawing out a template that would enable me qualitatively compare my options. I was able to narrow down to 4 schools as highlighted below. I have chosen to obfuscate some details for personal reason (Please bare with me).

Guys, i got my visa today. My class start Sept and the xpiry on the visa is 08/31/2013. Issue date reads 14/05/2012.
I didn't have to pay tuition before i got the approval and my sponsors account read only M2.9 which is far below the ($12,800 tuition + $10,000 welfare), tho my sponsor has a good civil service job.

My sponsors letter to the cdhc has no court signing (affidavit) on it, Just a signature following a word processed letter i typed myself.
Ye papaaaaa!!! This is wonderful. So glad for you. I can imagine the smiles on you face.
Did you have to visit/call them? or was the portal updated?

wisebrown: Hello people,

Please i need assistance here, i applied to stouffville college for ACCA and my conditional offer states i need pay $2700 for Application processing fee and 1st semester fee b4 i can get the unconditional offer letter to get my visa and I have an agent saying he can apply for me without paying the $2700 but only $315 for Application processing fee only. Please what do you suggest?
Do you have any problem sourcing or paying the $2700? Is the Application processing fee ($2700 or $315 ) refundable? Do you mind clearing from your agent exactly what he/she intends to do and how he/she intends to do it (I hope your agent permits you to ask questions!).

Am married and my question is, do I need to submit that of my Siblings and Parents even though they have nothing to do with my sponsorship? Or is it just for my immediate Nuclear family ie my husband and kid? Please reply friends am kinda confused. Thanks.
Evidently, there is no rule stating otherwise. Personally I think you can (CAN not SHOULD) if it is readily available and if it wouldn't add to the complexity of your storyline, but going by the experience of friends who are currently in Canada, you do not need to submit Marriage/Birth cert of ur siblings & parents since they didn't include it in theirs, all you need to submit is that of your nuclear family since you are married.

Well . . . in his case, he took additional courses hence compressing his program into a yr. That way, he was able to save himself tuition for the 2nd year and more time to do other things wit his time. He is at the point of applying for Work Permit already.

My passport expires like 8 days before the completion of my program, and i also learnt that cdhc don't issue visa above the validity of passport! Now, should i just renew the passport before sending in my application?
Any implication to that? even though my passport is valid for like a year and 11 months. My program is 2 years anyways! Advise please

A friend who had a similar issue was given only a year visa for a 2 yrs program. I guess they expect him to reapply for the other year when his current visa expires and probably on a new passport. I guess the more experienced guys would throw more light.

So transcripts and 'statement of result' from unilag contain nearly the same information. I speak from my knowledge, and a student of unilag should know what information in contained on the school's 'statement of result'. I maintain that if CIC says transcripts, send transcripts.
I haven't seen what a transcript looks like cos I am not meant to . . . at least, for now. I av simply described what a Unilag Statement of Result looks like and that is what I used. if you are still in doubt, 1st floor Senate building, Records and Data is their to clear your doubts. You could also visit, http://www.unilag.edu.ng/transcript.pdf , mail records@unilag.edu.ng, unilagrecords@yahoo.co.uk or unilagrecords@gmail.com or call 018509585, 017412788, 07044607904 (Between 11am & 3pm, Mon – Fri). Ask the Authorities your questions and intentions, then you'll be able to make up your mind.

For me, I would never advise anyone to cut corner or start tipping a post man around a bend.

The questionnaire is to be filled in handwriting. No electronic device like 'typewriter'. Submitting with VAC doesn't equate to use of a representative. VAC is not a agent/representative
dipo+ is absolutely correct on the VAC issue but for filling the questionnaire with typewritter . . . hmmm . . . As far as Instructions are concerned the only one I can see on the questionnaire is Please complete this questionnaire. If additional space is required add another sheet of paper. . There is nothing saying it must be Hand writing or Machine typed etc.

To me, what matters is the content and its legibility. Fine, you have to read in between the lines but excessive assumptions may do no much good.

A case in sample, form IMM1294 was specific on this You must answer all the questions on this application form unless indicated otherwise. Download and fill out the application form on a computer.

gini: Thanks Bumdish. The CIC website says Transcripts, I hope they wont mind the statement of result.

What's the statement of result like? Does it list all courses taken with Grades? Transcript lists all courses takken with points and the calculation of the CGPA. I just want to know the diffference between the statement of result and the transcript.

Which school will you be attending in Canada? What course and what is your start date? Good luck with ur Visa application. I'll like to be informed on your process as am yet to apply myself. Am waiting for the original hardcopy offer of acceptance and admission letter from my school. My start date is September 5th. In the meantime, am arranging my supporting documents.

U answered yourself. The CIC site says transcripts. The statement of results only gives information about the course you studied and the class u finished with (2.1 or 1st class grade. It doesn't even tell your overall CGPA). Though it is logical that the embassy can mak
e do with you statement of results, but you used your transcripts to apply to the school and the CIC site explicitly says transcripts. So why take a risk of having your application delayed about something you were instructed about cl
early
While I appreciate your input I would beg that we do not make categorically statements on specifics we are not privy to.

If you are taking about statement of result from unilag, then you are taking about a document listing all the courses you offered Semester by semester. The grade scored per course is also listed against each course. Your gpa and cgpa is also calculated by semester per session. The document also contains the description of the the score range each grade represents. Also, you will get 4 sheets for a 4 year program and 5 sheets for a 5 year course; each sheets showing your courses/grades per session and the last sheets shows your final grade and graduating class. Each sheets would also be stamped and sign by the schools authority.

There is always more always more than one way to enter the market. Just choose the best route that gives your soul some peace.

Each sheets would also be stamped and sign by the schools authority.

Each sheets would also be stamped and sign by the schools authority.

gini: Ok. Thanks a lot. I may not be able to use your method because my school uses different courier companies who send their staff for pick up. But then you've really helped me a great deal as now I know that the Visa office doesn't mind a transcript that is not in a sealed envelope so I'll apply and let them send to a company where a friend works then I'll pick up from the friend and add it to my application package. Chikena!

So it also means that even the sponsor's bank statement has to be open ie no document should be in a sealed envelope.

Thanks again.
Request for Statement of Result (You will do dat at Records and Data, 1st floor Senate House). Your transcript is meant for Academic inst, while your statement of result would serve other purposes including embassy needs.Your Statement of result can be handed to you unlike Transcripts that will not be handed to you in Unilag. No need to cut corners.

bamshy: You can if you want. It's no biggie. It's a medical evaluation form that has your passport photograph attached and stamped. Depending on your choice of clinic, you will be required to make 5 copies of your international passport data page, the medical evaluation form in the envelope and the medical instruction form itself. In addition, you will need to bring along 5 passport photographs and 28k. You will do blood/Urine test for HIV, STDs and STIs and other ailments. In addition you will have your xray done and a doctor to ask you questions about your sight and general health.
Thanks for insight and details. Has anybody used the newly added hospital in Ikoyi? I am seriously considering using them cos the appointments I got from the other clinics are aren't quite favourable to my schedule. Please advice.
