Siga: ...@bumdish...nice write up...but I have some observations on 22 and 25...

22. with a valid Nigerian Drivers license... U don't need to do G2... u will be exempted and from G1 to G....

25. If the cash is not up to $10,000 u are ok... the limit will be clearly stated on the slip given on the plane...

So, u are pretty on point....
Siga, absolutely.
I am trying to keep it simple and since most people usually go through G2 before doing G. I wouldn't advise someone from Niaja to skip G2 for reasons beyond the scope of this write-up. http://www.drivetest.ca/EN/licencing/Pages/Out-of-Country-Drivers.aspx
Details for #25 @ http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5052-eng.html

Thought I should share this tips with my brothers/sisters and hope it comes handy Continued

22. Come with your Nigerian Drivers Licence and ensure it would be valid till when you are ready to take the driving test. Usually, people start thinking about obtaining the drivers licence between 6-12 months of arrival. Please note that there is no need to start manufacturing a drivers licence if you do not have one up till now, it is just a good to have and not a must have. Your valid, Nigerian drivers licence with up to 24 months driving experience would save you a mandatory 12 months wait time before you can proceed to doing your G2 test after you must have aced your G1.
23. Most cities have at least one African shop where you can get your Nigerian peri-peri. (Nigeria Peak milk and Milo are also available) however, you are still encouraged to come with your package.
24. Ensure you do not come with prohibited items, ensure also that you declare whatever item you are required to declare in the sheet you will be provided with in the airplane before landing on Canadian soil.
Dried fish, grounded crayfish, grounded pepper, Kuli Kuli, dried leafs, Garri, grounded melon, grounded Okro, groundnut etc are OK, but ensure (1. They are reasonably declared, (2. They are not in commercial quantity, (3. They are not items to be grown.
25. Come with your originals and travelling/VISA documents. Ensure you know where you are going, where you would be staying and what you are coming to do, cos the Border official might want to know. You would need to declare cash amount in excess of $9,999 or its equivalent, failure to do so would be treated as a money laundry issue if discovered.
26. Factor in the amount you project to spend during your transit and the first few days of arrival in determining how much cash to come with. Also put in place a plan to get funds across to you in-case there are unplanned or bulk expenses.
27. Come with your Shoes, Suits & Ties, cos there might just be an interview around the block. As many personal items you want are available in stores but you can equally bring them. Its your choice.
28. There are lots of options available to conserve your money especially if you are on a tight budget. Use the thrift shops (what we call second-hand or bend-down-select) where you can get household/clothing items for considerably reduced prices and most times, at good quality. Nobody dey look you, Mr/Miss Canadian - http://thriftstore.ca/, www.valuevillage.com, www.talize.com etc
You could also check out dollar stores where inexpensive items are sold - http://www.dollarstore.ca/, www.dollarama.com. Another option are overstock, liquidation and factory refurbished stores where you get items at very cheap prices - http://factorydirect.ca/, http://www.electronicsforless.ca/
29. Your laptops and phones can be gotten in Canada or brought from Nigeria, I am not sure there is much difference in price but I would get them in Canada though, because (1. Several back-to-school promo will be on in August, (2. Warranty and (3. The Nigerian "British plug/socket" would not fit in North America unless with adapters.
See the British/North American socket variant in the attached. . .

Gathering documents, fulfilling requirements, the fees, the uncertainties and the looooooooooooong waits is some form of stress you know.

allspark: Thanks bro. I was thinking that since my office has given me leave with pay its a sign that i am coming home. I want to return anyway. Also, I assumed that since I have funding for rent, feeding, misc etc my account balance will be soley for her upkeep.
Fhemmmy: The account balance is just for you to show that you are comfy and wont depend on the goodwill of Canada to survive, show as much as you can and you will be well . . . . Yes, leave of absence and you wanna go with your wife, if i am the visa officer, i wont even look too much before i return your document to you . . . Take care of your schooling and your wife could join.
Dont allow any suspicions, so many leave of absence that becomes "I am sorry, due to personal reason, i wont be joining your organization again"
Just my 2 cents, Sir
Fhemmmy said it beautifully.
Without adding your wife to the application and based on your background here, I believe you have a solid case but the moment you add your wife, it puts additional duty on you to prove that both of you would return to your home country after your program. Job tie is good but it is nothing compared with marriage tie.
I have a friends who submitted his full scholarship letter as his only means of sponsor because he really doesn't have money, and still, the embassy in Nigeria gave him 2 years VISA, so you should be OK with some good money. If your wife is staying back, let her do an affidavits stating she supports your quest for higher education abroad and how she would be taking care of herself in Nigeria. You would be able to clear lots of doubts in the minds of whoever is reviewing your document of issues such as the genuineness of your marriage, how you intend to support your family when you are away etc.You should also know that your wife would have to go through this painstaking process when finally she wants to join you and this is the only see-able drawback to leaving your wife behind.
Another option is to apply for your own study permit and include her as a dependent however, you would write an explanation letter stating that she isn't going with you now but you would want her to be able to visit you in Canada when ever occasion demands.
Whichever way you go, I believe you are good to go
TravelRe: Travelling To Canada Part 4 by bumdish:
Thought I should share this tips with my brothers/sisters and hope it comes handy

1. Be prepared to hit the rock bottom, yes I know you have a job, furniture, houses, cars back in Nigeria but no one really cares right now. Be prepared to start again from ground zero
2. If you have a very close family tie to Nigeria and especially if its marriage or child(ren), be prepared to miss them greatly. Skype and Google hangout would be your best friend
3. Be prepared for eventualities with that your Nigeria based girlfriend/boyfriend because love would wax cold and attentions would shift. You must talk things over before you leave and decide on your relationship survival strategy well in advance. But please, don't leave that Niaja babe/guy hanging.
4. Resist the temptation of spending too much money in your first few weeks. Take your time and consult widely.
5. Information mostly circulates within communities. The top visible immigrants are the Chinese, Indians, Iranians & Pakistanis hence you need to identify your own and straighten your support system.
6. You would be pissed with the taxes (13% in Ontario, meaning if you cut your hair, you pay $18 + 2.34 HST). Live with it.
7. Language/Accent could be a barrier at first but that would normalize with time.
8. Avoid convenience stores (A store with extended opening hours and in a convenient location, stocking a limited range of household goods and groceries) if you can, because of the extra markup on prices, use large stores like Walmart, No frills, Food basics(my favorite), Freshco instead. Also look out for generic brands [consumer products (often supermarket goods) are distinguished by the absence of a brand name]. They are generally cheaper and equal in quality with branded products. I have attached a few of them
9. Now, you would find Google Map a very important utility. You could equally install other bus routes applications on your smart phone. Checking weather forecast could also be as important as checking your mails sometimes.
10. Consult widely before you acquire any long to medium term subscriptions such as phone line, internet & TV
11. Do a per term based accommodation lease (4 months), so you could easily move on if you must, but in many cases, you might just have to make do with a year lease because of availability. In any case, consult widely
12. You do not have to come with all the items you need. Good & affordable clothen can be purchased at Walmart or Old navy, but please come with your African attires, you would stand out in weddings and religious gatherings. Garri is a "must bring" but dairy products are a no-no including Gala. Sorry Fhemmmy. Check http://www.beaware.gc.ca/english/brirape.shtml for details
13. Try to organize the return leg of your flight against the next summer break, you just might find it useful, who knows
14. Finalize your airport-to-destination trip before you arrive in Canada and do have a few USD/CAD with you as backup.
15. The first semester is often the most difficult because you are going to be adjusting to lots of new things at this time. Meet your TAs and Profs if you are experiencing any academic difficulty cos they are mostly willing to help.
16. Attend Job Fairs even if you are not yet qualified. It is often an excellent way to test the waters
17. Have a open mind and eyes
18. Thread on the path of the law. There is no "I beg sir"
19. Use your social skills to your advantage and don't limit your scope
20. Credit Card is good and bad. The burden is on you to spot the difference
21. Now is not the time to relegate your maker to the backstage. Give Him the center stage

Just like any landlord would be happy with a tenant that beautifies and enhances the house. I believe God's blessing is on the nation for the good job they have done on their landscape. Welcome to Canada

addey101: I am so sad to report back to the house that after almost a month of my application. I have been refused a TRV based on my travel history and also, they are not satisfied that I will leave Canada at the end of my studies,Purpose of Visit and my financial status.. However,I want to wish the rest of my people here best of luck. Right now,I am so confused and don't know what else to do .
Sorry about that bro. Unfortunately, the reasons given are so generic hence, one can hardly make serious intuition from it. Offering you any cogent help from afar might not be beneficial. I would advise you hookup with an experienced hand to help diagnose more intelligently.
For the confusion part, I am a christian so I wouldn't advise you to go take Beer/Shepe like Don Siga would, instead, you should try to clear your mind of it in the best way you can, give it some days and come back to it. You have spent time/money/effort/hopes for sure but . . . man gats to move on. Once more I would say, sorry about that.

For the purpose of managing expectations, GboyegaD applied in the US not in Nigeria.

Maximip: I thought I was having the worst day ever as one truck messed up one side of my car today. Was still thinking
of the cost to panel beat it when I decided to check my email... behold, medical instructions had been sent to me like 7 hours ago. God is Awesome.

Applied May 2 - Online

Now my questions, I was asked to send receipt for one year tuition and board. My course is just 16 Months and the
school (UBC) requires I pay it in 4 instalments. How do I respond to this? I was also not given any instructions about sending my passport in, is this normal?
Sorry about you car on one hand and congrats on your medical callup on the other.
Simply contact your school about the embassy's requirement, they would be able to advise you appropriately. Try to contact your department, school of graduate studies and the finance department separately, you are sure to receive some useful lead on what to do.
For your passport, I would think it would be requested only after they have made a final decision on your application especially since you have additional requirements to fulfill.

Thanks in advance for your contribution.
Siga: ....Photography gigs are word of mouth here bro...tonnes of guys doing it....the best way to enter the market is to either join church or mosque or an association and market yourself....
Confirmed advice by Siga. You could also join as many campus associations as your time would permit. You need a network to grow your trade. Chai, I get one Indian boy wey sabi that thing well well.

Eko Ilo, being your ardent follower, I must say you disappointed me today. Your response shows that you are more concerned about the reputation of your paymaster and how badly your paymaster rates on the shame scale than the pitiable plight of those kids whose future the inactions of our leaders continue to obliterate . Right now, you rank side by side the likes of sincere9nigeria and your elder brother reben abati, a people who see black and call it white; whose thoart matters more to them than there heart. The only take home I see in this match is that we don't have a scorer. At best, Ideye remains our best bet. I guess Keshi wanted to try his luck on Ujah but the guy could get out of bed for 90 mins. This is a one goal team without Emenike and Moses. My advice to Nigerian fans is to lower their expectations of the Confederations Cups because, we do not have a finisher to prosecute the tournament.
