I bought my first car, Mazda 323 Nigerian used. I wanted to buy golf3 but the owner changed his mind and the mechanic told me that there's a Mazda that's ok and persuaded me to buy it. After a week, the car wahala poped up, ranging from high fuel consumption to suspension, fuel pump issue. Changed the fuel pump several times, rewire work every now and then. I changed my mechanic and rewire to the one introduced to me by my younger brother but still the same.
There was a day after leaving a rewire workshop with my brother, the car just stopped. We called the rewire, he fixed it and gave us assurance that it was ok. I just gave the key to my brother to drive it straight to his house to use it for few days because I don't trust anything about the car. I mounted a bike, off to my house.
My brother cruised it around for 2 days when the wahala start again. I told my brother to put it up for sale but he said NO, that he will make sure the car is fixed to perfection.
He eventually got tired too and put it up for sale. No buyer for more than 3 months. I called a rewire to do some magic and boom! It was on road. I drove it to a funiture workshop to check some funitures. Through our discussions, the man got to know that I want to sell the car, he was interested but no cash. We striked a deal of 2 sets of seven-seater sofa with stools. He jumped at the offer, I didn't waste time, I looked for a truck immediately and packed the sofas but the stools are yet to ready but he promised to bring it to my house the following week. I jejely dropped the car and the key for him immediately ('agbana' must not follow me home again).
A week later, on my way to work, I saw the car at a mechanic workshop, I waka paas. The car was there for more than 3 months. I learnt he later sold it as scrap.
As for the stools he promised to bring the following week, he never bring am and I no fit ask.
Una go kee me with laff oooo.

I don laff tire. See story o.

I bought a honda accord 04 model, had all necessary checks with a mechanic, car was moving like a boat, sincerely great seller, dude was a nice guy and a friend. On my way back to Asaba, got to a lonely patch, car couldn't accelerate again. I called the dude, he said I should restart and everything came back fine. I got to Asaba, it repeated again, called him again and this time he asked me to see an electrician. Out of anger I put the car for sale here on nairaland.

I was increasingly angry, so one day a guy came checked the car and priced 400k, I got the car 720k. I was so desperate to sell, until his electrician mistakenly said something that caused me changed my mind.

The next day, I took the car for scan, some errors were detected cant remember the code, changed a few sensors, did a general servicing and replacement of some parts. Its over 1year since this happened, the only thing I do is change oil and service ball joint. In fact one guy dey beg make him bring 800k, I no longer feel like selling.

I would say, I got lucky. A seemingly bad deal came good....
Most times when a car develops a fault shortly after buying it, we get really panicky.

It’s really messed up when you have to start troubleshooting and repairing shortly after buying the “just buy and travel to anywhere” car.

My prayer be say make we get money order clean title from Florida or enter Elizade/ IVM or Coscharis buy new Chacha machine comot.

Never buy Nigerian used cars as most people would have not used the recommended oil for gear, engine, power steering and stuff. My neighbor drove that car for year in a very bad roaded neighborhood until i parked out. zero issues. Its expensive to maintain cars. Even toyotas are expensive to maintain if u buy original parts and recommended OEM fluids. Common gear oil for my 2005 camry was 28k. How many people fit afford am?
True that

Now if I decide to buy a Nigeria used car , I price half of what the seller wanted to sell, because I know I will use nearly 150- 200 to repair it ...

Forget sugar coated mouth, there was something wrong with the vehicle for the owner to want to sell it...

It is not worth it at all. It is better one buys a car they would enjoy. Ever since the Nissan, I buy new cars from abroad. I could spend days inspecting the car I want to buy to avoid a repeat of the past. I have noticed that most people who sell vehicles that have been used in Nigeria, aren't always sincere. They'd always tell the reason for selling is because the owner wants to upgrade or relocate or bought another car...the excuses go on and on.
You Sabi my brother.

I would never buy any Nissan product. I bought that car "Nigerian Used". It looked clean in and out but I never knew the owner was selling it because of its numerous problems. I went with a Nissan-based Mechanic to inspect the car and he encouraged me to buy it that it was good. I never knew that the seller had promised the Mechanic 50k if he made the transaction possible. It was much later that I got to know when I started making trouble with the Mechanic guy over the incessant spendings I was making because of the car and he then confided in my cousin that the seller promised and gave him 50k for the transaction plus the 70k I gave him.
Just imagine

That’s what those devilish sellers usually do, they quickly corner your mechanic with a share of the sale.

One of my guys had similar issue with an infinity FX35 sotay if his mechanic sees me advising him to stop spending on the wack melon na wahala.

He learnt the hard way after spending almost 900k.

To think that the said vehicle was my first car... I was scared for years, to buy a car after the horrible experience that Nissan Murano gave me. I took it to Zuba spare parts market here in Abuja and sold it for N350k. A vehicle I bought just 8 months before for N930k. That was a very "bad market" for me. I only was moved by the shape and the brown interior of that vehicle. I never researched of the engine, gearbox and electrical components.
Jeez..... 600k loss in 8 months of terrible performance of the car.

Person wey no learn lessons from this thread no go ever learn again o. grin

That was my experience with my Nissan Murano in 2011. I drove to the market with my cousins. I had parked the car behind another car. when the owner of the car I had parked behind wanted to leave, I engaged the gear in reverse, after the moving back for the guy to drive out, my gear wouldn't shift to 'Drive'. I did all I could but all to no avail. The idiot wouldn't even go back to ' Park'. I reversed back home with my cousins. A journey of about 20 Minutes, took my more than 3 hours because of the mad traffic back home and to make matters worse, the Air-conditioner wasn't working so I was just sweating like a criminal that had just been caught. It was that very week I vowed never to have anything to do with a Nissan or Infiniti product. That same Murano always had problems ranging from Gearbox problem to Fuel pump to timing chain. Nissan is a flop abeg.
Very funny but painful bro.

if u drive a car for 2 months b4 a major fault start coming up,then is lack of maintenance or mis- use
You don’t seem to be on our “same page”.

The cars were not lacking maintenance and were not misused by the new owner but had underlying issues that were initially patched up for quick sale. Issues like previously ringed engine, failing transmission etc

So you end up buying a melon, a packaged motor that starts to gradually deteriorate and drain your finances.

Las las na to sell am off remain.

Thats the problem. How will those mechanics know genuine custom papers. I am also a novice in that respect sad
There are quite a number of guys here that can help confirm custom papers for you. Just look it up here. They usually charge 5k or so.

Better still after settling for a car, get the C number and go to any custom office close to you to verify yourself.

Oh thats nice.
One more question, are cars cheaper in Ibadan or Ijebu-Ode compared to Lagos (Berger)??
Do you advise i go to Berger for Toks?
It depends what you want to buy.

I will suggest you do an online check first to streamline your choices before going to check physically.

Also ensure you go with a trusted mechanic to check all the checkables (VIN, Custom Papers, Scan, Undercarriage rust etc) before payment.

How can one go about scanning a car at a dealer's outlet? Will it be allowed and who will bring the scanner?
Just asking this questions because i am about to get a Toks car.
Most dealers will allow it but if some start to show concern, just move to the next one.

I sell cars too and I expect you to do all necessary checks before payment.

Most times Tokunbo vehicles are not better ooo.

My friend bought a Tokunbo car and ended up spending close to 400k to fix different issues.

From shocks to brakes, to tyrod to censor this and that.

Not always easy anywhere. Toks or Registered.
Thats why you should do a scan and physical check especially for undercarriage rust, linkages, shocks etc
