The House of Representatives has said that the Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Mr. Babatunde Fashola peddled “inaccuracies, misleading and calculated mischief” about the 2017 budget, maintaining that Fashola’s ministry did not spend a kobo on the Second Niger Bridge in the 2016 budget as was allocated to his ministry then. Similarly, the Senate, on Saturday, also warned Fashola to desist from spreading falsehood on the 2017 Budget with with regards to projects under his ministry. In a news conference on Saturday in Abuja, Chairman Committee on Media and Publicity in the lower chambers, Rep. Abdulrazak Namdas, said that the minister’s statement tended to blackmail the National Assembly and set it on a collision with the executive. He said that the minister was fixated on matters of power rather than issues that would benefit Nigerians. According to Namdas, there was an obvious attempt to blackmail the National Assembly, paint it as an irresponsible institution, one not concerned with the welfare of the people. Fashola He said that because part of funds allocated to Second Niger Bridge in 2016 was returned at the end of the year, the national assembly reduced allocation to the project in the 2017 Budget by N5 billion. Namdas said that the deduction was applied to fund other projects in the South-East, and left N7 billion for the Second Niger Bridge. “The truth is that in the 2016 Budget, N12 billion was appropriated for the Second Niger Bridge but not a kobo was spent by the ministry. Not a kobo was spent and the money was returned. “The ministry could not provide the Committees of the National Assembly with evidence of an agreement on the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) or a contract for the Second Niger Bridge,’’ he said. Namdas said that the legislature also queried an omnibus allocation of N20 billion in the ministry’s budget whose details were not provided by the minister. He explained that it would have been irresponsible of the lawmakers to appropriate funds that were not tied to specific projects, adding that for doing so, “we incurred the wrath of the ‘almighty minister’”. He reiterated that the national assembly had powers in Sections, 4, 59, 80 and 81 of the 1999 Constitution (Amended) to amend the budget estimates submitted by the executive. Namdas said that the decision to redistribute the projects proposed by the ministry was in order to ensure even spread of projects across geo-political zones, which the proposal of the executive failed to do. Moreover, the Upper chamber of the National Assembly said that in passing the Appropriation Bill, the legislators worked and applied equity in provision for new and outstanding projects across the country. In a statement by its spokesperson, Sen. Sabi Abdullahi, in Abuja, the upper chamber said Fashola did not give the public details about the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which was on private finance initiative from beginning. It said that Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and the Federal Executive Council, in 2013, approved the reconstruction, rehabilitation and expansion of the expressway on Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) basis, “using private finance initiative”. “The Federal Government provided about 30 per cent of the funding while the balance shall be provided by the private sector. “The project was on course for completion by end of 2017 when the private finance initiative was being implemented, with over 30 per cent completion rate attained as at early 2015. “But, in a blatant disregard for existing agreements, constituted authorities and extant laws, Fashola on assumption of office, got the government through the ministry to start voting money for the implementation of the project. “Even, as at last year, the 2016 Appropriation Act voted N40 billion for the project on the insistence of the ministry and only N26 billion was released. “If we had known, the rest N14 billion could have been allocated to other critical roads across the country,” it said. It added that due to concerns and in the spirit of consensus-building and effective stakeholder engagement, the leadership of the Senate met with relevant stakeholders, including the Ministries of Works, and Finance. According to it, “it was agreed that we should give the Private Finance Initiative a chance to complement government’s resources in the delivery of critical infrastructure across the country. “Hence, in this year’s budget, we have engaged with the government and private sector groups, who have assured that they will resume funding of the project. “So, we only provided the fund in the budget that would ensure that work does not stop before the funds from the private sector start coming in. “It is our view that the Federal Government cannot fund the reconstruction and maintenance of all the 34, 000 kilometres of roads under its care,” the senate said. It explained that what was necessary was the need for private bodies to fund some of the roads, particularly those with high potential of attracting private investors. It said, “With private sector finance initiative, the rehabilitation of the road can be completed on time because full funding will be provided and there will be more certainty. “The minister’s statement is in bad taste.” The statement said that the National Assembly acted in the national interest to ensure that equity and fairness were achieved in the distribution of projects. The senate said that it also ensured that all sections of the country had representation in the national budget as guaranteed by the Constitution.

The truth is very simple here: Southern Minorities do not trust Igbos. Many are Igbophobic. Even the Ibibios that you guys love so much only "tolerate" Igbos because of their own nature, not because they love or trust Igbos.

Nigeria is collapsing today because of ethnic tensions, marginalisation and corruption. If Biafra is eventually gotten, corruption WILL NOT instantly go away but with an Igboid only Biafra, ethnic tensions and marginalisation will be a thing of the past and even when it happens, it'd be among brothers.

It will also be easier to achieve an Igboid Biafra than a Biafra with any other ethnicity in it. You guys have to understand that the struggle is seen as an Igbo thing. The very few people from minority groups trying to align with Biafra are doing so on their own terms and do not have the support of the people as many Igbos have for Nnamdi Kanu.

Finally, even if you guys insist on forcefully taking Southern Minorities, better get ready for all the problems that come with it. For a start, many will resist it through violence and internal crises will occur (coupled with the external ones that may happen with Nigeria -given the hate rhetoric that IPOB youths have been spewing online and elsewhere). In any case, make sure you do not conceive of adding anything EDOID (Urhobo, Isoko, Bini, etc) or Yoruboid (Itsekiri, Igala, Olukumi) into your contraption. That will be counterproductive and will never end well for you guys.

These are the reasons why I believe Biafra will not succeed and igbos have no way to succeed in creating their own country. In fact, if eventually igbos are given their own country, it will be so full of hunger, division, and conflict that they may eventually beg for the northerners to return and rule over them.

When you hear northerners begging the FG to let igbos go, consider the below reasons. Pay close attention at no. 4!

1.) if Biafra is to happen, it will be limited to five states. Nigeria will not hand over the Niger delta to the igbos even if the south south will eventually get its own independence on a different date and separately. What the north will not have, the igbos cannot get.

2.) Niger deltans either do not want to be part of Biafra or will eventually not want to remain in Biafra. That means conflict and even bloodshed. If the igbos think their Biafra will be a mini version of Nigeria where they will have hegemony over the Niger delta, and its oil, that is Satan dreaming of making it to heaven.

3.) the international community have nothing to gain from Biafra. And it will never want bloodshed and conflict that will send oil prices skyrocketing due to conflict between igbos and Niger deltans.

4.) if Nigeria is to allow the five Igbo states to conduct referendum today and give them independence, Biafra will literally be like Lesotho. A country within a country. (If you do not know how Lesotho looks like, please check you world map. It is a country inside South Africa; and Nigeria or neighbors won't be to Biafra what South Africa is to Lesotho). Nigeria can close its borders with a thick fence and close its airspace to Biafra of five Igbo states. Literally, your clamor for independence will end up being cries of siege. It will be hunger and poverty.

5.) igbos of five states clamoring for independence is not geographically feasible. It is like kanuris in parts of the north asking for independence. Your landmass is poorly situated. It's not even about the size. Your Biafra of five states is inside another country if your dream ever come to pass.

6.) the north can feed itself and Biafra cannot. Arable land is in abundance in the north and the north has been a bastion of agriculture.

7.) the north is a big market economically. It's landmass and population means big business. It is a big consumer market. That is money.

With your independence turning into a siege, you're literally finished. No agriculture of the north and no Niger delta oil for you and in an hostile environment, you are doomed. And this doom will also affect others. Therefore your Biafra project is aimed at destruction for everyone. To bring down the house on everyone's heads; and that is why many will stand against it to prevent such destruction from happening.

And far from being peaceful, no partition goes smoothly in places with ethnic and religious divisions and rivalry. Take example of India and Pakistan.

The best bet for igbos is to forge alliances across the nation and even go as far as mending fences with the north. People like okorocha and Amaechi have done well in that line of building bridges with the northerners.

You can clamor for restructuring or whatever it is called. Division of Nigeria will not end with a Biafra of anything more than five states. It will witness multiple divisions in both the south and the north. It could see continuos wars, famine and starvation which will be rampant in the north. Five states with 30 to 40 million igbos will be too populated with little sustenance or means for survival.

You will definitely not eat your cake and have it after asking for division. And that's where the north is hitting hard by asking igbos to leave. Such divisions means igbos starting from ZERO. You can't ask for your country and still try to live, and work elsewhere and want to control lands of other minorities.

As Nigeria is, it is not a land of a majority. It is a land of minorities. Add the biggest three ethnic groups, and the minorities will end up being more in terms of numbers.

And if the inevitable happens, igbos will be on their own. Both the middle belt and the south south or the Niger delta will not come to the help of igbos or want to die for igbos to have a country to dominate. Whether in Nigeria, in Biafra or in small independent countries, those ethnicities in the Middle East belt and in the Niger delta will remain minorities. Corruption cuts across ethnic groups. So what would they really stand to gain by dying for igbos? The igbos will end up besieged and beaten again if the inevitable (war) happens and may God forbid that.

Those few voices outside the five Igbo states cheering the igbos to secede will be no where to be found if the worst happens. The northerners will literally have a picnic in the south east, again! It will be really messy for igbos and they may never ever recover or survive as a group again. In fact, after such loss and dent to their image, anything Igbo may end up being treated like pariah. So those with much adrenaline flowing in their blood should think well before following the loud mouth of Kanu who may well end up proven to be an empty barrel.

Secession and partition are not child's play. I fully believe that self determination is human right. But in time of conflict, human right is abused. And how worse if the abuses and divisions are a never ending spiral? More or less a Pandora box! Half bread is better than none. Greed is a vice not a virtue.

You are a kid. So, igbo land ends in states created yesterday. You need to read about Nigeria.

Just thinking of this as a thought exercise, high population density tends to foster economic growth. This is because of network effects and scale economies. This is why urban areas tend to be more dynamic than non-urban areas.

Think about infrastructure for example: it costs less to deliver transport connecting people living in close proximity than people living far apart. This is why accusations that, for instance, Buhari provided more infrastructure spending as PTF boss to the North misses the point: the North's land mass justifies such a skew.

If low population density was good for the economy, living standards in the North of Nigeria would be higher than in the South.

Access to the coast would be helpful to growth for Igbos and so lacking direct access would not help. There are studies which show that distance from the coast has a correlation with economic growth. But I don't think this would be a major factor here as the actual distance from the coast for Igbos is hardly significant.

It's not the economics of Biafra that is worrying. It is the politics which trumps the economics. There is no easy way of delineating boundaries amongst the various ethnic groups in the South who would want to secede once a major ethnic group in the South leaves. There is little logic in staying in a Nigeria once either the Yorubas or the Igbos leave as the rest of Nigeria would be skewed towards Northern dominance. This would be Yugoslavia x 10: bloodier and messier.

On the boundaries in the south, all the ethnic groups know the boundaries.
In rivers state, ndoki/asa have their boundary with ikwerre at timber bus stop. The three clans (egbema, ndoni, eleme) in ONELGA know their boundaries. The same applies to etche and ikwerre.
In delta state, the igbo clans know their boundaries with Bini and urohbo/isoko.
The same applies to igbo in benue state.

The Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has called for restructuring in Nigeria as the only way to survive running a Federalism of indebtedness.

Aregbesola made this call on Monday while speaking at the 24th year celebration and remembrance of the annulled June 12, 1993 election of Chief MKO Abiola.

According to Aregbesola, it is time Nigeria get restructured in line with the federal system of government being operated in India.

He said in India, states are created based on people who speak the same language and have same cultural values.

He said if Nigeria wants good unity, we need to restructure , just like in India adding that Nigeria democracy is a dictactorship of indebtedness.

He said Nigeria should return to a paliamentary system of government if the country does not want to die of indebtedness.

He said the federal system of government that operates 36 states can not work in the face of the economic realities, adding that the country’s revenue can not manage the system of government it operates.

He suggested that the state in the country be pruned to six states, base on geo-political zones and that each state should have a president elected to serve a single term of six years.

He said like the paliamentary system of government, the six presidents will elect a president that will head the country for one year and after each year a new president will be elected among the remaining ones, making it rotatory.

He said in the case of the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election, those behind the annulment are enimies of Nigeria and the black race, because the presidency of Abiola would have eradicated poverty in the country
Speaking on the theme “24 Years After June 12 Challenges of Democracy in Nigeria”, a professor of history from Osun state university ,Osogbo, professor Siyan Oyeweso said late chief Abiola remained symbol of democracy hence the need for political gladiators to make democracy more meaningful to citizenry.

Professor Oyeweso who noted that twenty four years after June 12 Nigerians were still battling with issue of good governance and development, called on political leaders to retrace their steps by consolidating the nation;s democracy.

The guest speaker hinted that late chief Abiola was a true nationalist who died for the interest of the masses saying the current has not justify the sacrifice of the late political icon.

On his part, a human rights activist, Mr Femi Aborisade who maintained that Nigerians have not tasted true dividends of democracy urged political actors to change their attitude to political offices.

Aborisade said June 12 benefits could not be realized if politicians continued to see public office as a means to acquire wealth.

In his opening remark, the chairman of the event and senator representing Osun East in the Senatoria District, Senator Babajide omoworare noted that June 12 was key to the present Democratic governance hence the need for government to recognise the day as democracy day.

Omoworare submitted that sustainable democracy was the only way to consolidate the memory of June 12 and immortalize the hero of the day.

He described sustainable democracy and good governance as best way to immortalize the acclaimed winner of June 12,1993 presidential election,chief Aboiola.
