No offence, but the 'unemployed' folks in the pictures look well-fed, well-dressed, and well-groomed. Cell phones too. Baba 70's (Fela's) "Suffering and smiling" comes to mind ![]() |
@ Topic Everyone under the sun obeys the Pleasure Principle - We all seek pleasure and avoid pain; except that pain leads to greater pleasure. I am also planning a move from the #4 city in the world to #136!!! (Ranking according to http://www.eiu.com/site_info.asp?info_name=The_Global_Liveability_Report&rf=0). And I would be lying if I made myself out to be some sort of a hero. Of course, it is expected that my portable skills and knowledge will contribute to my sphere of influence in Nigeria, but that's purely incidental, even though I am looking forward to contributing my quota. Even the Son of God endured pain and shame because of "the joy set before Him" after the cross. How much more a mere mortal like me ![]() |
Goes to show that we (Nigerians) have a quirky sense of humor, and we LOVE it! We rarely take offence at personal jokes. (This thread is one big joke!) Rev. Al Sharpton & his gang would have bombarded the poster with lawsuits, protests, rallies, media assault, etc, so long as poster is not black! ![]() |
^^^ @ Ibime Very well said. Greed and mismanagement trumps intelligence and "achievements" over and over again. Nigerian leaders are experts in one (greed and mismanagement), but have shown no tangible results on the other (intelligence and "achievements" . IMHO, great educational "achievements" without positive transformation is useless. |
^^^ Too funny! |
henry101: Word! I am understanding this loss small-small. Thank you, henry101. |
Genuflect:Thanks for the insight - Much appreciated. |
(Just heard of Da Grin today as stated in earlier posting) I have noticed cross-tribal accolades pouring-in for Da Grin. How was he able to bridge "Chinese-wall-like" tribal boundaries that have held Nigeria back for so long? I am beginning to catch a glimpse of his dominance, but I still want to know more. |
arkinses:@arkinses Thank you very much. Whao. Simply, whao. @NL Other comments are welcomed to help those of us who know squat about Da Grin. Sounds like he was a great guy. |
nana:@ Nana Talent aside (awards, etc), what was the attraction to Da Grin for you? Please help me understand. Was he kind? Soft-spoken? Approachable? Philanthropic? Civic-minded? Role model? Challenged status-quo? What was it? |
arkinses: Really? How so? Someone please fill me in. I don't believe the 40+ yrs crowd can say that much about Obey, KSA, or Late Fela. Whao - This Da Grin guy was clearly legendary. Looks like my people have a brotherhood/fraternal connection to the guy. |
Never heard of Da Grin until a couple of hours ago. (OK, my bad) Having watched his vids on Youtube, the public wailing and mourning make perfect sense. Whao, the guy was distinctive, daring and diligent. *Now, what's with the conflicting news - Is he dead or alive? Someone should check his pulse and get back to the nation!* |
^^^ Remember Dennis Bergkamp? Former Dutch soccer and Ajax star? You couldn't pay him enough to get on a plane - He drove across Europe for ALL his games! ![]() |
^^^ You bet! The Dana pilot is Nigeria's Capt Sullenberger, the US Airways pilot who landed an aircraft in the Hudson River after a bird strike, saving 155 lives. Kai! If this happened in North America, that pilot don hammer - million dollar book deals, movies, speaking engagements, etc - just like Sullenberger. The awesome pilot probably hopped in a kabu-kabu taxi, got home, and couldn't even watch the news coverage as there was no light! ![]() |
Source: http://thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=171116 To underscore the problem, he (Prof. Ezzeldin Mukhtar Abdulrahman) said: “In Kaduna State currently, we have just three qualified Physics teachers in the whole state. When I mean qualified, that means they have a degree in Physics and also Post-graduate Diploma in Education.” Abdulrahman said to solve the problem, the state government had set up a special science education scheme in the university under which students are given incentives, including a monthly allowance of N5,000 each, to study Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths and English. ===== One large secondary school needs 2-3 physics teachers! Haba! 3 in a whole state?! Could this be the effects of Boko Haram-like disturbances, causing Southerners to flee the North? |
@Poster Great question. Here is a laundry list of things I do to leapfrog writer's block (with a notepad in hand): 1) I dig deep and reflect on my initial purpose for writing the piece; 2) Read other people's materials, usually unrelated to what I'm writing; 3) Create an appropriately timed distraction; 4) Remind myself that this is a phase of dramatic fatigue - Much like marathoners hitting the proverbial "wall" when they run out of glycogen; 5) Reflect on the audience - their faces, their emotions, etc - as they read/listen to my finished work; and 6) Realize that every writer, great and small, faces the block. I feel a surge of ideas, clarity and drive thereafter. ![]() All the best! PS: I don't write for a living - But I realized that preparing for presentations (which I do a lot of) is analogous to writing |
Here is some love - A Nairaland red carpet just for you. I see you have a "Who wants to be a millionaire" post; hmmm. . .Na wa oh
|
obyann: Not a laughing matter - That's exactly what my Mum requested for and we (the kids) had to shake bodi. I still remember the shock-disbelief-adoration (in that order) expressed by the Oyinbo bank cashier when I told her what the withdrawal was for, in response to her question. ![]() @ OP - If you have the liver, take a deeeeeep breath and ask her! |
Goodluck's US Visit Boosted Nigeria's Image - US Ambassador to Nigeria Acting President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit to the United States has made tremendous and positive impression about Nigeria, the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms Robin Sanders, has said. Sanders made the remark while fielding questions from newsmen shortly before Jonathan left the US after completing a four-day visit. ``His participation in one of the most historic landmark events in this century, the Nuclear Security Summit that President Barrack Obama hosted with so many world leaders, was an important one. ``His role here as Nigeria’s acting president from the bilateral meetings and invitations with this global event on a very important issue is commendable. ``And he has made such a positive, tremendous impression for his vision for Nigeria over the next 12 months,’’ News Agency of Nigeria quoted her as saying. The US Ambassador reiterated that her country maintained a strategic relationship with Nigeria, citing the recent establishment of the US-Nigeria Bi-National Commission and other bilateral co-operations.Commenting on the success of the visit, the Ambassador of Nigeria to the US, Prof Ade Adefuye, said Jonathan’s interactions with several key organisations in the US has put Nigeria on ``a high pedestal’’ . ``During a meeting on Corporate Council on Africa, an American remarked that `Mr president within the last four days you have done the best to put Nigeria on a high pedestal.‘ It has justified that this visit is a mission accomplished,’’ he said. NAN reports that aside the Nuclear Summit, Jonathan attended series of meetings in the U.S. including a session with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. He had a breakfast session at the Council on Foreign Relations, the Centre for Global Development and had a luncheon with Vice President Joe Biden. Jonathan also had a meeting with the World Bank President and an interaction with members of the Black Caucus at the US Capitol, among others. === If the well-worn axiom is true that international politics is 80% posturing and 20% substance, then I agree that GJ's visit can be the signal to the international community of investors that Nigeria is ready to play in the sandbox of development. The visit means nothing more than that in my view. Nigerians are hungry for results! |
This thread is a real head-scratcher - What's the point ![]() |
^^^ Hi Gabry; here you go: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-344383.96.html#msg4833203 It's been a while, Malay-Naija ![]() |
Spent my entire lunch time, and then some, on this thread. Wow! The things kids do. aisha2:Did you still deliver the 'loot' (cornflakes and wine) to your sisters? If yes, you definitely stick to a plan till the job is done! ![]() |
@ Kobojunkie Agreed. Let's stay positive and encourage these baby steps - The US has been perfecting its democracy for 184 years longer than Nigeria, and it's still not perfect. |
Kobojunkie:You drew a comparison with US teabaggers to say weekly protests will not work. I don't think anyone is calling for an imitation of the US approach here. If we have one or two sporadic protests, without developing into a groundswell of civic consciousness (consistently demanding better governance), then I agree with you. A pillar of accountability in management requires having one neck to choke - The fat necks of Naija's politicians are ripe for choking with protests, petitioning, media blitz, etc. |
KnowAll: ![]() |
Kobojunkie:Not so, Koko-J, according to the 3rd edition of Tea Party Express schedule in the link below, 'teabaggers' rally every two days! http://www.teapartyexpress.org/tour-schedule-3/ However, I agree with your diversified approach - signing petitions, etc. |
@ OP A commendable project indeed. However, why not create the much needed economic multiplier effect by giving this project to a Nigerian engineering firm?! Of course, the firm may engage Chinese technology, but OUR economy would be better stimulated. |
@ OP Hmmm. . . Agbakoba may prolly be better off remaining a critic - I recall how the honourable Prof. Sam Aluko was roundly messed up when he ditched the critic's corner to serve as IBB's Finance Minister. He lost his voice and his reputation. Towering ciritcs have been proven to be corruptible. |
