Both were great in their own different ways, they both fought to put an end to a brutal racist apartheid system, but Luther King went further by trying to challenge the US govts activities in countries around the world.

King was hated by the US establishment but their hatred for him increased when he began speaking out against US involvement in the Vietnam war and putting an end to poverty amongst working class Americans (black and white).
Speaking out against a system which discriminates against blacks is one thing but going further to speak out against poverty and the American war machine are even bigger issues which could lead to mass uprisings by the American people (black and white) for this reason MLK became a serious threat to the powers that be in the United States and had to be stopped.

Mandela on the other hand confined his fight to the overthrow of apartheid in South Africa and though the ANC drew up a Freedom Charter which advocated wealth redistribution to narrow the gap between poor blacks and the white minority this was never implemented. Also Mandela allowed the economic structures of apartheid to remain in place thereby consigning the majority of poor blacks to languish in poverty. This may be one of the reasons why Mandela was not assassinated by the apartheid power structure.

I think these pictures have distorted what really happened on that day, first of all if at all Michelle was irritated it was probably because she felt that it was totally disrespectful for her husband to be clowning around at a funeral let alone a funeral of someone as great as Mandela taking st.upid photos with two imbeci.les. Secondly Michelle is way too self assured to worry about a dumb attention seeking woman who no-one had ever heard of until today.

He made laws which made his party, the only party in the country and a life president. NKrumah never went to jail but crushed opposition.. Why would a divisive person found an organisation which championed the cause of African unity ie the OAU?

The west hated Nkrumah becauase he was trying to elevate the African from a position of subservience, as a result he had many enemies within and outside Ghana and this is why he had to jail his enemies. Many of these people were agents of the west who were trying to remove him from office.

I respect Mandela for his selflessness, perserverance and endurance but I don't think it was right for him to allow a regime of brutal racists get away with the atrocities that they committed against the black people of south Africa. To make matters worse he even allowed them to hold on to everything that they stole from that country - that is no victory my friend.


Mugabe is hated by the west for the same reason that Nkrumah was hated by the west - he refused to be used as a puppet of western multinationals and banking interests.

In as much as Mandela did his best he was unable to deliver victory to his people in the form of jobs, land ownership and decent housing, what is the point of removing apartheid if Africans remain economically excluded?
South Africa today is one of the most unequal societies in the world and that should indicate to you that forgiving your oppressor is not the solution. Mandela did his best but even his best was not enough to overcome the mighty forces of white supremacy and capitalism.

Do you think Europeans would have forgiven Africans for killing thousands of their people? History has shown us that Europeans perpetrate violence against the weak, time and time again and expect the weak to forgive them, this should tell you one thing - only the weak forgive while the powerful abuse and exploit. This is an important lesson that many Africans have refused to learn from and as they say he who does not learn from history is doomed to repeat it .

Mugabe used his thugs called the green boys and the war vets to kill and drive out white farmers and give those farms to his party members. These white farmers are Zimbabwean citizens, many born and grew up in Zimbabwe, is like Nigerians born in US or the UK, they run schools and hospitals within those farms, there are supper markets within those farms. After 1980 Mugabe allowed the integration and white farmers produce what Zimbabweans and indeed other countries eat, Zimbabwe is called basket food of Africa then.
They need no visa to visit the UK, they got the best education in Africa and very educated bunch of people.
Problem started the moment an opposition party called the MDC was formed and big majority of its members are white farmers and they got money and outside influence. Mugabe never wanted a challenge as he saw himself as Zimbabwe liberator, a war hero and Mandela of Zimbabwe.

Immediately he brought a new law removing dual citizenship, this means that white farmers have to chose whether to become Zimbabweans only or the UK, US, South African etc, to do that they have to denounce their citizenship of other countries and pledge allegiance to Zimbabwe.

Now this is the sticking point, election was approaching and to vote you need to be a Zimbabwean, meaning that those MDC members who are yet to pledge allegiance to Zimbabwe can not vote and the process of getting the form was made so difficult that very very few white farmers were able to complete the process before the election.

Mugabe destroyed Zimbabwe, he got rid of opponents by all means, by 2003 Zimbabwe was gone, i lived and studied in Zimbabwe for 4 bloody yrs and i'm not making things up here, i could write pages on Zimbabwe, there is no freedom of speech in Zimbabwe, the opposition can't use the national television for any of their program, no opposing newspaper apart from the govt mouth piece.

The currency was so useless they have to adopt US dollar as their currency.

I didn't say that at all, in my view Nkrumah is greater than Mandela because he was not content to just share power with the whites and allow them to keep their own share of what they stole from Africa, he went further than that in that he wanted blacks to empower themselves, own their own wealth and be masters of their own destiny. Im not denying that Mandela was a great man - he was great but in a different way. He was self sacrificial and believed that ultimately all men were capable of good, Nkrumah on the other hand was more of a pragmatist and believed that the only way that Africans could be respected by whites were if we owned and controlled our own resources.

They made me an honorary member of the "Muslim Students Society of Nigeria," and renamed me "Omowale," which means "the child has come home" in the Yoruba language.

The people of Nigeria are strongly concerned with the problems of their African brothers in America, but the U.S. information agencies in Africa create the impression that progress is being made and the problem is being solved. Upon close study, one can easily see a gigantic design to keep Africans here and the African-Americans from getting together. An African official told me, "When one combines the number of peoples of African descent in South, Central and North America, they total well over 80 million. One can easily understand the attempts to keep the Africans from ever uniting with the African-Americans." Unity between the Africans of the West and the Africans of the fatherland will well change the course of history.

Being in Ghana now, the fountainhead of Pan-Africanism, the last days of my tour should be intensely interesting and enlightening.

Just as the American Jew is in harmony (politically, economically and culturally) with world Jewry, it is time for all African-Americans to become an integral part of the world's Pan-Africanists, and even though we might remain in America physically while fighting for the benefits the Constitution guarantees us, we must "return" to Africa philosophically and culturally and develop a working unity in the framework of Pan-Africanism.

Kwame Nkrumah (21 September 1909 – 27 April 1972) was the first President of the first free nation in Africa, and a founding father of the Pan-Africanist movement.

His dream was to turn Ghana into a modern industrial utopia – a society shaped by the power of science that would serve as a model for the rest of the African continent. At the heart of his plan was the Volta Dam, a hydroelectric power plant that would provide Ghana with all the cheap power that it would need to initiate an industrial revolution.

Rise to Power
In 1935 Kwame Nkruma left Ghana for the United States as a student, receiving a BA from Lincoln University, Pennsylvania in 1939. During that time, he was elected president of the African Students Organization of America and Canada. He was also exposed to the philosophy and teachings of Marcus Garvey, and the Communist teachings of a US based Trotskyist intellectual cohort. Nkrumah later credited these ideas with teaching him 'how an underground movement worked'.

In 1947, Nkrumah returned to Ghana. Using the political mechanisms he saw there, he returned to Ghana and within two years created the country's first political party. Within two years after that, he was swept into power as the first Black Prime Minister in Africa under the British colonial system.

With the threat of uprisings abroad and financial crisis at home, Britain reluctantly set Ghana free on March 6, 1957. Nkrumah easily won election as the country's first President, and chose a flag with the Black star –inspired by Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line – at its center to represent the new nation.

Nkrumah also launched a series of popular social projects on behalf of his people (who loved him), including The Organization of African Unity (OAU). The OAU was established on 25 May 1963. One year later, Malcolm X established the Organization for African American Unity (OAAU) modeled after Kwame's idea.

The Volta Dam
If Ghana was to become a modern industrial nation, it needed both industry and the power to fuel that industry and provide the continent with its first industrial revolution. The Volta dam was originally the brain child of Britain, but the colonial power was shrinking from the world stage and in doing so, began to withdraw its financial and project support from its former colonies. During his campaign, Nkrumah's platform was founded on the idea of modernization, but without funding for the Volta river project, there was no way that dream could become a reality.

Nkrumah set back out for America to sell the project to then President Eisenhower who took an immediate interest. Ghana at the time was literate, wealthy (as a result of its already profitable cocoa exports, and made a great business prospect for America. And the benefits to America as a young world superpower were two-fold:

First, the manufacturing process for a new metal called aluminum had been discovered, and aluminum ore was abundant in Ghana.

Second, the worlds energy prices were raising, and having access to a cheap source of electricity with which to process aluminum would have greatly increased the profit margins and reduced processing costs for the manufacture of the metal.

President Eisenhower contacted California based Kaiser Aluminum, the world's largest aluminum manufacturer, to exploit the opportunity and fund the project. The assumption that America would mine Ghana's bauxite and use the Volta dam's electricity meant two new large income streams and industries that would assure Nkrumah's dream of an industrial revolution. However, Kaiser Aluminum had different plans. They would only use Ghana's cheap electricity – importing aluminum ore from other places in the world, and then exporting the aluminum back to America. The thought was that if the operation became too profitable, Nkrumah could nationalize the dam project and cut America out completely.

Nkrumah was crushed. The aluminum industry would have done for Ghana what the steel industry had done for the United States. Nkrumah ultimately had to agree to America's terms if he wanted the dam to be built, but as an additional stipulation, he had to raise $30 million on his own.

He sought help from the World Bank, an operation initially set up to fund the recovery effort in post WWII Europe, but which later became a source of funding for the rest of the world. Nkrumah's young new country was now indebted to the World Bank, and the dam became a leash by which the United States could control Nkrumah and exploit the country.

The exploitation of Ghana went into full swing; it became a haven for American and European industrialists who were interested in taking advantage of the country's desire to modernize. White corporations would repeatedly dupe officials into purchasing whatever could be sold, no matter how inappropriate (a Belgian company sold the country snow plows¬. Yea, snow plows. In Africa).

The Volta Dam was completed on January 22, 1966. One month later, Nkrumah was overthrown by a CIA backed coup.

The anti-Nkrumah pro-imperialists lobby in Ghana is once more up and making its usual ugly noises.

These anti-national and anti-progress groups of elite worshipping political hags continue to applaud the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the MI5 of Britain for toppling the Nkrumah Government. We have no difficulty with their hatred of Nkrumah and their disdain for the liberation of the masses from poverty and exploitation but at the very least they must learn to respect the truth.

Even their Masters in London and Washington are more honest than they are. It is strange that at a time when the declassified documents of the CIA reveal that the coup against Nkrumah was plotted in Western Capitals and that the Ghanaian soldiers and politicians in Ghana make the false claim that Nkrumah was overthrown because he was a dictator.

As a fact the only reason for toppling the Nkrumah Government was that he and the Convention People’s Party stood in the way of the imperialist powers in their attempt to reduce Africans to hewers of wood and drawers of water.

In any case, the effort to devalue the work of the Osagyefo is futile and Nkrumah will continue to be celebrated from year to year.

Neocolonialism (also Neo-colonialism) is the geopolitical practice of using capitalism, business globalization, and cultural imperialism to influence a country, in lieu of either direct military control or indirect political control, i.e. imperialism and hegemony.[1] The term neo-colonialism was coined by Ghanaian president Kwame Nkrumah, to describe the socio-economic and political control that can be exercised economically, linguistically, and culturally, whereby promotion of the culture of the neo-colonist country facilitates the cultural assimilation of the colonised people and thus opens the national economy to the multinational corporations of the neo-colonial country.

chucky234: Nkruma was partly fighting for his own interest and decided to enslave Ghanians when he finally got hold of power,he would have made Gold Coast his family property were it not for the coup.
4 years was enough for Madiba to hand over power to a new govt without having to go back on his promise,Nkrumah after spending 27yrs in prison wouldnt have given up power just yet but Madiba did.
Madiba's victory over apartheid had so many positive impact on the Africa continent, I think Madiba is the greatest of the two.

Responses like this reveal why African political history needs to be taught in our secondary and higher institutions in Nigeria. HOw can any black African in their right mind say that Nkrumah was fighting for his own interest after every thing he went through with the colonialists in Ghana?

Madiba was NOT victorious over apartheid because the majority of blacks in south Africa are still poor, landless and unemployed, victory over apartheid would have resulted in land reform and redistribution of the wealth stolen by the whites which did not happen.

Declassified National Security Council and Central Intelligence Agency documents provide compelling, new evidence of United States government involvement in the 1966 overthrow of Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah.

The coup d'etat, organized by dissident army officers, toppled the Nkrumah government on Feb. 24, 1966 and was promptly hailed by Western governments, including the U.S.

The documents appear in a collection of diplomatic and intelligence memos, telegrams, and reports on Africa in Foreign Relations of the United States, the government's ongoing official history of American foreign policy.

Prepared by the State Department's Office of the Historian, the latest volumes reflect the overt diplomacy and covert actions of President Lyndon B. Johnson's administration from 1964-68. Though published in November 1999, what they reveal about U.S. complicity in the Ghana coup was only recently noted.

Allegations of American involvement in the putsche arose almost immediately because of the well-known hostility of the U.S. to Nkrumah's socialist orientation and pan-African activism.

Nkrumah, himself, implicated the U.S. in his overthrow, and warned other African nations about what he saw as an emerging pattern.

"An all-out offensive is being waged against the progressive, independent states," he wrote in Dark Days in Ghana, his 1969 account of the Ghana coup. "All that has been needed was a small force of disciplined men to seize the key points of the capital city and to arrest the existing political leadership."

"It has been one of the tasks of the C.I.A. and other similar organisations," he noted, "to discover these potential quislings and traitors in our midst, and to encourage them, by bribery and the promise of political power, to destroy the constitutional government of their countries."
