This is definitely true and very valid for the most part.
There are places you do not want to live in the UK tho. Life was awesome when I was in Manchester, but had to move to Lancaster when I got a job up north (somewhere called Milnthorpe) in 2019. I had to talk to myself daily to remind myself there was a lot more to life. Then the lockdown came while I was still there (thankfully I had gotten married at this time) and it was still a mess. I was there for 9 months before I got a different job and had to move to Liverpool and things became better.
So moving to the UK is one thing, but there are UK cities that can rival whatever depression Canada has anyday, anytime; so it's worth looking out for.
As for making more money, I would think it's relative. Generally, I think living cost is a lot less in the UK (which is a major plus), but then in my field, the average salary in Canada (Toronto precisely) is way higher than most UK cities and probably at par with London (which is more expensive than Toronto).
I didn't have to change jobs on my move to Canada, and thankfully, my pay was adjusted (there are tools they use for these adjustments) and I honestly can save more at the end of every month. PS: this isn't peculiar to me.

So generally I think everybody's story is different and a lot of thoughts have to be given to what you do as a profession and where your bigger opportunities are.

But just like you, I found life in the UK easier. House search in Toronto was an extreme sport for me.

Thanks a lot for sharing. What is your career field please?

I don't know if I should be crying or laughing because of AVO's reputation. I have been on Twitter reading the negative comments about them.

Anyone here with an update on AVO?

Why are they not processing application?

When are they likely to start treating their backlog?

I'm April 2021 AOR.

This endless wait is tiring.

This story was sad to read

Story don't really sound sad to me. If I'm to believe his side of the story, Lola is obviously spoilt and selfish, the mistake he made was marrying her and her bad character would always unveil itself at some point in their marriage, being in Canada just accelerated it.

The separation can be a blessing for him, he's even paying less money to Lola now so he should stop sulking and focus on developing his career and improving his mental health. He just needs to maintain a healthy relationship with his child.

He can still take his time to find a good woman as Lola was never designed to be a good wife to him.

This issue is quite common in Naija. Basically, marrying the wrong person will always be a harmful experience irrespective of the country one resides in.

all that will take months to 1 year, employers are looking to hire immediately. I get an average of 3 recruiter’s email on LinkedIn daily. Companies are increasing salaries and offering sign up bonus to potential new hires. Canada really needs to improve on its immigration processes and paperwork. The citizens too have to stop this cat and dog nonsense and start giving birth angry

On a more serious note, removing subsides on fuel and power means two things

1.Government stops spending money on subsides...which means that more money gets saved...plus due to investment flowing in, there is more taxable income from jobs and company earnings..more money for government.

Hi Backbencher, I want to understand something, does government subsidy prevent investment from flowing in? I want understand how the subsidy removal will bring in more investment basically.

You should speak more for yourself and not for the average African. Some people don't even know what you are talking about. Again, like many people have said, is not by force to live in Canada. You can always go back home to Nigeria where it is lively every single day.

Let's hear him out rather than get defensive and sometimes aggressive. I have a feeling that the boredom he is expressing has to do with where he is living and doesn't apply broadly. However, it's hypocritical to just dismiss him. You didnt even enquire the province he's based in and you're responding hashly to him.
No country in this world is 100 percent exciting.. The idea of this thread is to discuss the good bad and ugly of living in canada after all. Don't dismiss his comments please. We are here to help each other irrespective of whether you're in Canada or a prospect.

Mehn!

Wataguan?

Are you OK at all?
Didn't you read the OP's post he said it is a teaching job and they hardly have payslip in that kind of profession except in big and standard school.

Had it been it won't affect his new pay, it would have been OK to disclose the actual amount.

You are talking about being honest, are they suppose to ask that question or ask him how much they want them to pay him because the company have already set the amount they want to pay for that role.

During my days as an employee, I did it and it worked for me in my last job.

Go through the thread, you will see others that have done it.

All I see in your response is hypocrisy.

Yes I am okay and my responses are not hypocritical.
I have never revealed my previous salaries, yet I'm still gainfully employed so that negates your point on hypocrisy.

It is not compulsory information for prospective employers, period!

You should have disclosed it, better still increase it.

If it was 300k, you can say 350k or 400k...

That will give them the believe that you are open, meJanwhile you added something.

Wrong advice! Lies and misrepresentation should be avoided during interviews.

Salary information is confidential and should revealed at interviewee's oldiscretion

Name one government law regarding this please ASAP.

Act, policy, government law.. lmao...

The potential employer is still a stranger. You dont need the existence of an act or policy in order to safeguard personal and confidential information.

Revealing such information is at ones discretion

very bad in clear terms .....it is official to ask your previous salary ....if the interviewer deems it fit .

I guess u didn't ask what was their offer...

The question is inappropriate and intrusive. Asking for salary expectation is more professional.

Normal interview question.
The potential employer would like to know if you would be motivated by what they would be offering you or not, based on the difference, if any, between what you have been collecting and what they would be offering you.

It is not normal. The appropriate question is "what is your salary expectation:?

The employer should ask for salary expectation not previous salary. The OP is within his right to refuse disclosing the information.

Career / Re: My Brother's Employment Letter Was Withdrawn by casiello(m): 1:30pm On Nov 11, 2020
mastermaestro:

You are the one who actually has little understanding of the implications of his brother's actions. The dude deceived his interviewers with the help of his former manager. HR only found out after employment letter had been issued. I am sure HR probably went through his records because someone amongst disgruntled applicants (staff) rightly raised dust over his recruitment against standard company criterion.

As it stands, the dude has zero ground for contesting his sudden disengagement. In fact the company could sue him for mischief and false representation. I am sure the said manager who encouraged this mischief would be in soup as we speak. He will no longer be trusted on matters like this.

We are talking about a managerial position here, not any position. Hardly does a reputable company recruit an outsider to fill up a managerial vacancy. Very uncommon.

The difference between my opinion and yours is that you arrived a conclusion without authenticating all the facts while I didnt. You say he has zero grounds while I say it depends on the whole application process and not just the single job requirement that it is an internal vacancy. This is because job requirements are not sacrosanct and can be overlooked at the employer's discretion.

Now, my point is, if its provable that HR was deceived (which is not hard) then you are right. It's the actions and activities leading up to the bro's employment that matters, that is why I proferrred several suggestions based on the limited information the OP shared of which one of my suggestions is in agreement with yours.

What I didnt like is everyone joining the bandwagon and arriving at a conclusion based on limited information only. Haba!

Ok, let me make it easy.

@OP, was your brother or his former manager at any point during the application or interview asked if your bro is an active staff?

Did your bro or his former manager encounter any clause or statement categorically stating that your bro must not proceed with his application if he is not an active staff?

If the answer to any of these questions is Yes, then he should forget about the job because misrepresentation has occurred. If it is No for both, then he has grounds to negotiate his employment or disengagement compensation.
Career / Re: My Brother's Employment Letter Was Withdrawn by casiello(m): 12:07pm On Nov 11, 2020
I'm actually shocked that everyone is laying emphasis on the job requirement rather than the employment letter.

The only grounds the HR have are if he was categorically asked during the interview or job application if he was an internal staff, and OP's bro responded yes to that question (meaning he lied).

Or if the employment contract states that the offer is subject to the employee being a current staff at the time of accepting the offer.

Now, I understand why many Nigerians struggle to understand their rights. I'm shocked that most people here believe it's an invalid employment simply because of a discretionary job requirement.

@OP, though your brother may have legal grounds based on the terms of the employment letter and responses provided during the application process but I'd advise that he tries to negotiate with the company after all the negligence is on their part and not your bro. If they insist that he leaves, then he must be compensated. This is assuming that employment contract contains no clause that he must be an existing staff or he didn't lie during application and interview.

Lastly, your bro might decide to just let it go for the sake of peace for his former manager, especially if his continued stay would cause problems for his former manager.

With patience and due diligence, you can buy 2 Nigerian used cars instead of one Tokunbo car. That's what I did. Just take along 2 different mechanic (unknown to each other) to inspect the car, if they both provide consistent and positive feedback, then be rest assured that it's a good car. You'll need to be patient in sourcing the car though.
