Police on Tuesday barricaded Gani Fawehinmi Park in Lagos which was scheduled to host a rally in support of Operation Amotekun, a security outfit launched by South-West governors.

Igbere TV reports that Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, had declared the outfit illegal.

But South-West governors insist that the outfit, set up to assist the police in curbing crime in the region, would remain.

Politics / Boko Haram Kills 19 Fulani Herdsmen In Gunfight. Femi Fani-Kayode Reacts by CastedAyo: 6:40am On Dec 16, 2019
Boko Haram jihadists gunned down 19 cattle herders Saturday in Nigeria, civilian militia sources and residents told AFP on Sunday.

Ethnic Fulani herders, besieged by a spate of armed attacks targeting their cattle, pursued Boko Haram, sparking a fierce gunfight outside Fuhe village, near Ngala close to the border with Cameroon.

“The insurgents killed 19 of the herdsmen in the fight,” anti-jihadist militia leader Umar Kachalla told AFP.

Bodies of the slain herders were brought to the police by militiamen, Kachalla said.

The herders had earlier repelled an attack by Boko Haram fighters who invaded the village to steal livestock, killing one of the militants, Mada said.

The herders then decided to pursue the jihadists and fight them “once and for all”, Mada said but were overwhelmed.

“The herdsmen were subdued by the better-armed Boko Haram gunmen,” he said.

Jihadists then returned to Fuhe village and burnt homes and food supplies while herds fled, according to Ngala resident Abubakar Yusuf, who saw the dead bodies at the police station.

Boko Haram has increasingly targeted farmers, herders and loggers, accusing them of spying and passing information to the military and the local militia fighting them.

They have also been raiding herding communities, seizing cattle — a valuable commodity in the region — to fund their operations.

Boko Haram and rival Islamic State West Africa Province are known to operate in areas around Ngala and the neighbouring town of Gamboru.

ISWAP has focused on targeting military installations and troops since 2018 while Boko Haram faction is notorious for indiscriminate attacks on civilians.

However, ISWAP has been blamed for a recent increase in attacks on civilians.

In August 2014 Boko Haram seized Ngala and Gamboru, a trading hub, but Nigerian troops retook both towns in September 2015 with the help of the Chadian military.

Despite the recapture of the area, jihadist fighters continue to launch sporadic attacks, ambushing troops and vehicles, as well as attacking and abducting farmers.

In November last year, Boko Haram abducted around 50 loggers at Bulakesa village outside Gamboru.

The decade-long conflict has killed 35,000 people and displaced around two million from their homes.

The violence has spread to neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting the formation of a regional military coalition to fight the jihadists.

It is my earnest prayer these two merciless, vicious and barbaric jihadi terrorist organisations wipe one another from the face of the earth.

Politics / Senator Omo-Agege Introduces Bill To Amend Electoral Act by CastedAyo: 5:19pm On Dec 09, 2019
Igbere TV reports that Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege says he has introduced a bill for comprehensive amendment of the Electoral Act No. 6 of 2010.

Omo-Agege revealed this on Monday at the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room Stakeholders Forum on Elections organised by the coalition of more than 70 civil societies in Abuja.

He said the bill, co-sponsored with Senator Abubakar Kyari of Borno North Senatorial District, was now making its way to public hearing, having scaled second reading with overwhelming bipartisan support in the Senate.

“It is a decisive response to a plethora of our Supreme Court’s decision inviting the National Assembly to make sensible amendments to the Electoral Act,” he said.

“And I believe it is responsible for us to take the apex court’s constructive guidance on issues that fundamentally affect our democracy.

“This apart, Section 153 of the Electoral Act, 2010, as amended, specifically and expressly empowers INEC to issue regulations, guidelines, or manuals for the purpose of giving effects to the provisions of this Act and for its administration thereof.

“The pervasive non-compliance with the Guidelines, Regulations and Manuals, would carry clear consequences for people who think violating electoral due process is a rewarding exercise.

“The proposed Bill to amend the Electoral Act would focus on resolving issues surrounding INEC’s introduction of modern technologies into the electoral process, particularly accreditation of voters.”

Omo-Agege said that the bill would also mandate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the voters’ register for public scrutiny at every registration area and on its website, at least seven days before a general election.

According to him, it also mandates INEC to suspend an election in order to allow a political party that loses its candidate before or during an election to conduct a fresh primary to elect a replacement or new candidate.

He said the bill would grant agents of political parties the right to inspect original electoral materials before the commencement of election, define over-voting to include situations where “total votes cast also exceed total number of accredited voters’’.

INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, was represented by the commission’s head of information and voter education, Festus Okoye.

Politics / Social Media Regulation: NUJ Will Gain More – Lai Mohammed by CastedAyo: 6:49am On Nov 19, 2019
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), Guild of Editors and their members have more to gain with the Federal Government’s plan to sanitise the social media space.

The minister gave the assurance on Monday in Abuja when the President of NUJ, Mr Chris Isiguzo led other executive members of the union on a courtesy visit to him.

Mohammed who was reacting to the concerns raised by NUJ that the planned regulation could lead to gagging of press, assured that the union had nothing to fear.

“To the best of my knowledge, the trained, professional journalists cannot afford to engage in fake news, because this will kill public trust in the media.

“They also cannot afford to engage in hate speech, because of its implication for national peace and unity.

“As a professional body for journalists, the NUJ has its code of ethics for journalists, and this guides their operation.

“After all, there has to be a country before you can even practice your profession.

“It is therefore, imperative for the NUJ and other professional bodies to guard their turf very jealously and ward off charlatans and fakes,” he said.

The minister said that the NUJ put the cart before the horse by publicly rejecting the planned social media regulation without trying to understand what it entails.

He clarified that the regulation was not an attempt to gag the media or muzzle free speech and journalists have nothing to fear.

“If the NUJ or the Guild of Editors, or indeed any professional body has any fears, we expect them to reach out and engage us, rather than rushing to the media to condemn a plan to inject sanity into the social media space and protect the integrity of the media.

“As a matter of fact, the NUJ and other media professional bodies should take the lead in sanitising the social media space.

“This is because they will be the first victim when the people lose confidence in the media due to the reckless actions of non-journalists and purveyors of fake news and/hate speech.

“Only the purveyors of fake news and hate speech need to be worried,” he said.

Mohammed assured that the government would not unilaterally impose the measures aimed at injecting sanity into the social media space.

He said government would work with stakeholders, including the NUJ, Guild of Editors, Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria, the Civil Society, Online Publishers and Bloggers.

“Already, we have dispatched letters to these stakeholders.

“A government that has the intention of gagging the media won’t engage stakeholders in dialogue on the way forward,” he said.

The minister reiterated that there were many options open to the government in regulating the social media including the use of technology, legislation and regulatory bodies.

He said the stakeholders, when they meet soon, would decide on the best option.

Mohammed disclosed that government had also taken the initiative to meet with the platform owners, like Facebook, WhatsApp, Google, Twitter and Instagram, among others, to engage them on the way forward.

While welcoming the debate that had trailed the announcement of the plan, the minister said there was no going back in regulating the social media.

“No responsible government will sit by and allow these purveyors of fake news and hate speech a free reign.

“That’s why many countries of the world are taking measures to regulate the social media.

“The UK, France, Germany, China, Singapore, South Korea, Kenya, Zambia….we can go on and on.

“Only last Friday, France’s National Assembly approved a draft bill that will require social media giants like Facebook, Twitter and others to remove any hateful content within 24 hours.

“France is seeking to lead in regulating the tech giants and containing the spread of illicit content and false information on the most-used platforms,” he said.

Earlier, Isiguzo underscored the importance of free, independent, vibrant and nationalistic press to good governance in a democracy.

He however, noted that events in recent times had given the union concern about journalism profession, particularly the safety and freedom of practitioners.

Isiguzo said that, though the union regretted the escalation of fake news and hate speech, it would not support any legislation that would be used to silent the media and perceived opponents.

The NUJ president also disclosed that the Union would soon sponsor a Bill on enhanced salary package for journalists before the National Assembly.

Members of the NUJ delegation included its National Secretary, Shuaib Leman and the National President of National Association of Women Journalists, Mrs Ifeyinwa Omowole.

President of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has paid the return ticket for 20 Nigerians in South Africa.

The cleric had in September pledged to finance the return of 20 Nigerians willing to return to the country amid renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

In a tweet on Friday night, Suleman announced that the 20 South African returnees had arrived the country, adding that they were given N1.3 million for support.

“God helped us to bring back 20 South African returnees who were eager to come home and gave them N1.3m little support. Sorry I wasn’t at the airport to receive you. @RAyemoba our able servant of God, thanks for standing in for me,” he wrote.

Attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa have this year forced hundreds of persons to flee the country, Igbere TV reports.

About 187 persons arrived in mid-September as the first set of returnees financed by Air Peace.

President Muhammadu Buhari visited South Africa afterwards where he held talks with President Cyril Ramaphosa to find a solution to the crisis.

Politics / FEC Approves N1.7bn For Construction Of Jetty At Bonny Island by CastedAyo: 5:45am On Nov 14, 2019
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has approved the sum of N1.7 billion for the construction of jetty at the Bonny Island in Rivers.

Minister of State for Transportation Gbemisola Saraki made the disclosure while briefing State House correspondents on Wednesday after the FEC meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“Today, the Ministry of Transportation presented a memo for the approval of award of contract for the construction of jetty at Bonny Island in Rivers State.

“This approval was sought and was duly given.

“Some years ago, we had a jetty at Bonny Island; it collapsed and now creating a huge problem for tug boats and pilotage.

“So, what happened is that the pilot’s lounge is actually in Bonny; so boats used come all the way from Port Harcourt to pick up the pilots.

“It was advertised in late 2017 and today, the council gave approval in the tune of N1.7 billion and it will be completed in 15 months.’’

On the bill proposing death penalty for hate speech at the National Assembly, Saraki said it had not yet become a law, adding that hate speech was also in the Cyber crime Act.

She said that the sponsor of the bill might have put the death penalty there, but it had not become an Act.

“ I think we are jumping the gun a bit, like you said he is proposing the bill; it is not yet an act.

“Be that as it may, there is a law already in Nigeria, the Cybercrime Act that has the hate speech aspect in it.

“I stand to be corrected; I think it was passed 2014/2015; I am not particularly sure but there is a law that takes care of that.

“Because cybercrime now a major issue and as your know internationally, world over, everybody is concerned about it being the new frontier to fight crime.

“So hate speech is within that cybercrime aspect,’’ she said.

This chicken is called Ayam Cemani - a rare breed of chicken from Indonesia. This "Goth Chicken" is all dark — even its bones and internal organs.

This chicken breed is like the Lamborghini of chicken.. Is the most expensive chicken breed in the world.

Everything in this chicken is black from bones, liver, heart, lungs, beak, feathers and skin, and oh! Except the eggs - they lay cream eggs.

The blackness is due to a dominant gene that causes hyper-pigmentation which is a genetic mutation known as fibromelanosis.

The chicken is originally from Java, Indonesia they are credited with having 'mystical powers' and are traditionally eaten as part of ritual, as well as being considered as status symbols and used in traditional medicine preparations to cure a variety of ailments.

The Ayam Cemani is such a rare breed of chicken, all dark — even its bones and internal organs.

Little wonder they call it the "Goth Chicken".. By the way, a pair is selling at 2500$.

This was made known in a statement released through his media aid, Garba Shehu, on Saturday, 19 October.

Earlier, police in Kaduna State have uncovered an illegal Islamic rehabilitation centre in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area of the state.

About 147 victims, some of them in chains, were rescued from the illegal facility known as Malam Niga’s Rehabilitation Centre.

“President Buhari will not support criminality under any guise, including the abduction of children and selling them off illegally.

Politics / Anambra Fire: Obiano Should Resign - Nigerians React by CastedAyo: 10:58am On Oct 17, 2019
Nigerians Call For Gov Obiano’s Resignation Over Slow Response To Anambra Fire

Nigerians have demanded the resignation of Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, over his government’s slow response to the fire incident in Onitsha on Wednesday.

Three persons were said to have been killed including a mother and her child after a fuel tanker fell and went up in flames at MCC Bus stop near Toronto Hospital, Upper-Iweka, Onitsha.

Many houses along Iweka Road were burnt, some parts of Ochanja Market were affected while about six houses and vehicles were razed.

Reports say that it took over an hour for its neighbouring state’s fire service arrive at the location because of the distance and traffic on River Niger bridge and the Onitsha-Benin highway.

The Delta State Fire Service, on arrival, met a group of angry protesters, who threatened to burn the emergency vehicles for being late.

They blamed the Anambra State Government for the disaster by not providing fire-fighting equipment to the area.

The fire fighting vehicle soon ran out of water and the fire raged on till midnight.

Nigerians on Twitter have appeared unimpressed with Mr Obiano and have called for his resignation.

Politics / U.S. Based NGO Renovates Borehole, School Toilets, Library In Abuja by CastedAyo: 3:12pm On Oct 16, 2019
Hope and Dreams Initiative, a U.S. based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has renovated toilets, hand washing station and library in Aleita Primary School, Abuja, to mark the 2019 Global Hand Washing Day.

Mrs Nguzo Ogbodo, the President of the NGO, made this known during sensitisation programme organised by the organisation for seven primary schools along Airport Road Abuja on Tuesday

The schools include Local Education Authority (LEA) Primary School Gui, near Goza, and LEA Primary School Kuchingoro.

Others are LEA Primary Schools Baruwa, LEA Primary School Goza, LEA Primary School Kapuwa, LEA Primary School Aleita, and LEA Primary School Kunyami.

Ogbodo, at the inauguration of the projects, said the organisation also renovated one of the community’s boreholes in Aleita to commemorate the day.

“Because one of my focus areas is hand washing, it will make no sense to teach about hand washing and not making provision for hand washing station that could be used for it.

“I built the library and need to renovate it, it is a standard library, we also rehabilitated the community bore hole because one of the things the community is lacking is water.

“The bore hole is there but the water was not flowing and we have to work on it to make it functional to serve the community,” she said

Ogbodo said the Global Hand Wash Day was marked on Oct. 15 annually, adding that this year’s theme “Clean Hands for All”, was very apt because of the importance of hand washing to human health.

“It is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of hand washing with soap as an easy and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.”

Ogbodo, while teaching the pupils the various steps of hand washing with soap and water, urged them to wash before eating and after the use of toilet.

She also called on government to invest more in the health and education needs of the population.

“The government needs to do more in building library, toilet, free food for the students because if children are hungry they cannot learn.

“And, to other stakeholders and well meaning Nigerians, they should also come out and do something for the community schools, there is nothing that is small, we can do more no matter how small.

“To the parents, they should take care of their children and feed them well and also maintain hygiene for them,” she said.

The Education Secretary, Local Education Authority (LEA) AMAC, Alhaji Haruna Karshi, lauded the NGO for the initiative which he said would go a long way to enhance the health of the students.

Saidu was represented by Mrs Stella Nwoke, Head Guidance and Counselling, LEA, Abuja Municipal Council (AMAC).

According to the secretary, the efforts of the initiator is commendable and should be emulated by all well meaning Nigerians as government alone cannot solve the problem of its citizens.

“Today is a global hand washing day, it is high time that people in Nigeria should learn to support government in development of the country

“People should come out and do something meaningful to support the schools and communities in which they live,” he said.

The Head Teacher Aleita Primary School, Mrs Florence Adebayo, commended the HDI CEO for remembering the school and embarking on some projects especially the renovation of toilet, library and bore hole for the community.

According to Adebayo, the sensitisation would go a long way to help the student leave a healthy life. There is need for the students to know how to wash hands and live a healthy life.

“My advice to the government is that they should try as such as possible in the public schools to provide toilet, bore hole and health facilities of the schools,” she said.

A parent, Mr Jonathan Mazawaji also commended the Hope and Dream initiative for coming to the help of the schools and community especially in renovating the borehole.

Politics / Femi Falana Reacts To DSSʼ Plan To Report Judge To NJC For Granting Sowore Bail by CastedAyo: 6:20am On Sep 30, 2019
The lawyer representing the detained publisher of Sahara Reporters, Femi Falana, has said that the Department of State Security Service (DSS) cannot report Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court to the National Judicial Council (NJC) over his decision to grant bail to the convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Omoyele Sowore.

Mr. Falana said this in a statement issued by him to newsmen on Sunday, September 29.

According to an earlier report by The Nation, a meeting of security and intelligence officials was held on Friday, September 20th with the resolution to appeal the bail ruling and also petition the NJC on the issue.

The newspaper said a government source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, claimed that anyone standing trial for treasonable felony should not be entitled to bail.

According to him, Justice Taiwo only exercised his discretion judicially in an application for the bail of a citizen.

“The DSS cannot complain against the handling of the case by Justice Taiwo who did not entertain the agency’s application to extend Mr Sowore’s detention,” he said.

Urging Nigerians to disregard the report, Falana said media reports on the plan to report Justice Taiwo to NJC was misleading as the quotes in the report were not credited to any named official of the DSS but to some anonymous sources.

“I have since confirmed that the fictitious report is a figment of the fecund imagination of the writer, Mr Akuntunde. Hence, the report and the quotes therein were not credited to any named official of the SSS but to some anonymous sources,” Falana said.

He described the report as a desperate bid to divert public attention from the contemptuous conduct of the DSS, which he said hurriedly pressurised the Federal High Court to assign the case for the arraignment of Sowore.

“From the information at our disposal, the report was designed by The Nation to blackmail and intimidate the Judges of the Federal High Court with respect to the trial of Mr Sowore.

I wish to state without any fear of contradiction, that the Federal High Court is competent to admit a person charged with a capital offence to bail by virtue of section 161 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.”

Falana said Sowore has not been charged with capital offence contrary to the position of the DSS. “Treasonable felony is not a capital offence under section 41 of the Criminal Code. Even under the most brutal dictatorial regimes in Nigeria, our courts did not hesitate to uphold the fundamental right of the victims of repression to personal liberty, including those who were charged with treasonable felony,” he added.

“Having regard to the facts and circumstances of this case, the SSS cannot complain against the handling of the case by Justice Taiwo who did not even entertain our application to quash the order for Mr Sowore’s detention for 45 days.”

Falana said it was due to the fact that the SSS counsel, Godwin Agbadua, withdrew his motion ex parte for an order to further detain Mr Sowore for additional 20 days that led to the judge granting him bail.

“To that extent, the National Judicial Council has no power to sanction a judicial officer for exercising his/her discretion judicially and judiciously in an application for the bail of a citizen.

In other words, since the NJC is not an appellate court it cannot review the order for the conditional release of Mr Sowore from illegal custody.

”Instead of joining the global campaign for the release of Mr Sowore from illegal custody as ordered by the federal high court, Mr Akintunde 1 of The Nation newspaper has colluded with the forces of reaction to intimidate the Judiciary.

But it is a mission that is bound to fail as no dictator has ever succeeded in cowing the courts and the Nigerian people to submission.”

Sowore has been in DSS custody since August 3 for calling for “revolution” through protest scheduled for September 5.

The DSS had on Friday refused to grant access to a bailiff of the Federal High Court in Abuja on a mission to issue fresh service of the court order for Sowore’s release.

Politics / Osinbajo’s Office Not Sidelined – Presidency by CastedAyo: 1:32pm On Sep 19, 2019
The Presidency has disproved claims that the office of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has been sidelined after a change of the Economic Management Team (EMT) headed by Prof. Osinbajo, Igbere TV reports.

President Muhammadu Buhari had recently set up a new-look economic advisory team which has economists such as Prof. Charles Soludo, Bismarck Rewane, and others, to take over from the team previously overseen by the Vice President.

Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Thursday on Channels TV dismissed the claims as false, Igbere TV reports.

Mr Adesina said the presidency is united and that Buhari is only working for the good of Nigerians.

He said that the insinuation that there was a rift between Osinbajo and Buhari was being spread by detractors of the Federal Government.

“The Vice President is the number two man in the country…The new economic advisory body can also relate with the Vice President as necessary,” Adesina said.

“It’s just some Nigerians who want to drive a wedge between the President and the VP, that read meanings into everything and insinuate but there’s no need for that.”

Business / CBN's New Policy On Cash Deposits: Nigerians React by CastedAyo: 2:06pm On Sep 18, 2019
Nigerians on Twitter have attacked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over its recent decision to increase charges on transactions.

Igbere TV had reported that the CBN, said customers making cash deposits or withdrawals will pay charges beginning from today in line with its new policy.

The objective of the “transaction fees” is to give vent to the Central Bank’s policy designed to reduce cash in use.

CBN Payments System Management Department Director Sam Okojere on Tuesday announced the take-off of the charges in a statement.

“The transactions will attract three per cent processing fees for withdrawals and two per cent processing fees for lodgments above N500, 000 for individual accounts.

“Corporate accounts will attract five per cent processing fees for withdrawals and three per cent processing fee for lodgments above N3 million.

Reacting to the development, Nigerians are asking for the reason they need to pay an extra 2% when they deposit over N500,000 or pay 3% when they withdraw same; after paying account maintenance charges monthly, ATM maintenance charge, stamp duty charges and transaction charges when they ransfer to other banks.

It is now clear that the government does not respect the law. The international community is interested in what is happening in Nigeria and the incessant killing of our members.
