Kudirat Abiola (1951 - 1996)

Kudirat Abiola, wife of the President-elect of Nigeria, Chief Moshod Abiola, was born in 1951, in the northern Nigerian city of Zaria, where she also had her early education. Testimonies of her times at Muslim Girls High School, Ijebu Ode, indicate the evolution of a powerful mind that married the qualities of hard work with the diligence of an achiever, becoming the Head Prefect in her final year.

At 21, she married Chief Moshood Abiola in a union that produced seven children. Partly in response to the circumstance of her own history, Kudirat adopted many social causes, and was to become a prime supporter of the educational programs of the Ansar-Ur-Deen movement in Nigeria. Kudirat was also a successful businesswoman, building a pharmaceutical company, amongst many other businesses, into a notable name in Nigeria.

Ordinarily tuned to private life, the military’s annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which her husband had won, brought Kudirat into the pro-democracy movement. The movement had its costs: in 1994, Moshood Abiola was incarcerated and kept in solitary confinement for claiming his presidential mandate. Despite the clear danger, Kudirat provided clear leadership in this period of general confusion. She stepped forward, convinced that the military’s actions amounted to a violation of the fundamental right of Nigerians to elect their government.

Her participation inspired new levels of activism in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement. In the summer of 1994, Kudirat was actively involved in moving and sustaining the oil workers twelve-week strike against the military. The strike, which succeeded in isolating and weakening the government, was the longest in African history by oil workers. In December of 1995, when the pro-democracy groups decided to march for freedom in Lagos, Kudirat joined such esteemed nationalists as Chief Anthony Enahoro at the forefront of the march, braving the bullets of government forces sent to intimidate them.

On June 4th 1996, a few days to the anniversary of the June 12 commemorative date when Nigerians resolved to vote out the military dictatorship, Kudirat’s life on earth ended, extinguished by assassins’ bullets. Her spirit lives on in the name and work of KIND.

Chief Bisi Ogunleye

Founder, Country Women Association of Nigeria

Chief Bisi is a pioneer in the economic empowerment of women, a gifted advocate for their full participation in policy and decision making, and a long-time leader in the fight to free her country from poverty, hunger, malnutrition, environmental degradation and injustice. For nearly two decades she has been promoting the active involvement of Africans in development issues that affect them.

A hands-on activist, Chief Bisi's strength is derived from a firm foundation in the villages of Africa, and the committed partnership of her late husband, Peter Adeleke Ogunleye. She began helping women organize themselves by donating one month's salary to a group of rural women to use as seed money to start their own business. The repaid loan was reinvested in other groups until, in 1982, Chief Bisi founded the Country Women Association of Nigeria (COWAN) with six cooperatives of 150 members.

Today COWAN has over 1,390 groups and 31,000 active members across eight states of Nigeria. It is known for its women-designed programs in credit, agriculture and small business development. In 1993 COWAN incorporated into its program the Centre for Development and Self-Help Activities (CEDSHA), created by Peter Ogunleye in support of youth and rural women. In 1994, in partnership with the international organization CEDPA (Center for Development and Population Activities), COWAN began an integrated health and family planning project designed to reach 3.5 million women in Ondo State.

Through COWAN, Chief Bisi established NARWA: the Network of African Rural Women Associations. An articulate spokesperson in the international community, she also currently serves as co-chair of the Women's Environment and Development Organization, and is one of eight women on the 20-member United Nations Earth Council.

Chief Bisi's inspired leadership grows out of her tenacity and vision, long before it was fashionable, that rural women possess the desire, capability and commitment to work to improve their own lives and their communities.

Regardless of what accomplishment those actresses made in their lifetime, there was nothing inspiring about their acting except for maybe Annette Benning. She try small, but i KNOW she can do better than that.
Eva whatsherface was a total bore. Seriously as the other woman, i would think she could do more than just sashay up and down the screen. Meg ryan's character, gawd help her. I'll jump in the lake myself if i ever become that clueless.

Romance / Re: Is There A Man Shortage? by Cayon(f): 4:34pm On Dec 28, 2008
esilove:

forget about the population ratio of women to men: there is no man shortage. all that matters is the standard of the lady in question in terms of character, dressing, level of interaction with people around her etc.

As you will agree with me that at least there are not less than 10 unmarried men around your neighbourhood.

If you have what it takes to be a wife or befiting girlfriend tell me how 7 out of these 10 men will not come after you. I seems that there are shortage of men because some men like me are not interested in a liability, unrealistic, unpopular, arogant girls.

AS a piece of advice to girls try as much as possible to be good and see how many guy in your neighbourhood or school and/or work place will be falling over you for serious relationship.

on ur side men will be more populated than women: AT THAT TIME YOU WILL ASK "IS THERE A WOMAN SHORTAGE"?

for more lecture on this mail me at naijahome@yahoo.com
ykush:

Well @ the poster, this would mean your observation from your own angle.

You go to certain places and you see so many beautifull ladies (when i mean beautifull, i mean beautifull!) flocking around and you're like WOW! are the men not in trouble of being run over?

In line with comments i have seen so far on the topic, men shortage has been broken down into REAL MEN shortage. The woman's perception of a real man varies according to person. I'll take that to mean a woman looks out to find the perfect man wherein there is no such thing as a perfect man.lol. We mostly end up living with the quality that attracts us to the opposite sex and then manage imperfections we can accomodate.

I for one believe the women folk contribute largely to men playing them. lol

The women is one of the crappiest movie this year. Talk about waste of film rolls.

Hahahaha. . ,  .  . .I just read what you say to my brother and he is like "tell her I want to meet her because she is a smart girl" (he thinks I am on line with a friend -hence his resply).  You see, while we were watching it - my brother said out loud "what a crappy movie" and that's when my mom threw a cushion at him grin grin.  Why?  Annette Bening, is my mom's favorite actress - plus my mom met her in person.  I like the women because when compared to the original, there is a twist and that's one of the reason why i love it. plus the simple fact it is a movie about women with a predominately cast made up of women (great actresses as well).

Hmmm, iice i am going to summon you.  Why?  you have to watch the women again

***************
The Women is about friends and mothers and daughters. It’s about breaking up and finding your way back. It’s about reinventing yourself. It’s about walking through fire for what you believe in. It’s about Women.

For those interested. here is a link where you can download movies for free(didn't check for the women but i'm sure its there)

Funny, we had this conversation at our house this morning.  My mom who is still here(Didn't leave) was in conversation with some Yourubians and you basically repeated what they said.

This too is happening in the Caribbean.  Here in the BVI, many citizens don't vote from their heart   It's all about Power, bribery and fear (jobs).  Even though we have black leaders - i think, whites are running the show.  And if you ask me, i think some whites make sure certain "blacks uncle Toms are in office - that way they can get away with "murder" (dirty deals). lipsrsealed lipsrsealed.  Let me shuush lipsrsealed lipsrsealed b/c you never know who is reading this forum.

Kwanzaa for Life Prayer

O come all you faithful, rejoicing and victorious! Come, let us adore the Lord of life and goodness, as we celebrate Kwanzaa and the African American heritage. Come and give thanks and praise for the journey. Jesus, by your mercy, grant us the grace to cherish this life. Guide us to uphold the dignity and respect of life from the moment of conception to its natural end at death. Lead us to be to true to our nature as you created us. We ask these things because we have our roots in the divine origin of Creator, Savior, and Sanctifier, Jesus our Lord. Amen.

I will spend less than one hour a day on the Internet (Nairaland). This, of course, will be hard to estimate since I'm not a clock watcher. grin

I will stop considering other people's feelings when they so obviously don't consider mine - if that unwashed fellow sits next to me again, I'll tell him he stinks. grin

Draw up a list of people who were nasty to me in the past year, get even with them in the next year grin

If I see another topic (Nairaland) on Masturbation, Anal and MouthAction - I am going to run outside my house naked grin

When I'm angry, plan what i'm going to say before I rant

I will not bore my boss by with the same excuse for taking leaves. I will think of some more excuses.
