President Muhammadu Buhari today met with Niger delta leaders. According to the Presidency, the meeting was convened to seek ways to end the militancy and the sabotage of oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta region. Speaking during the meeting, the President the problems his administration found on the ground were many, as illustrated in collapse of oil prices, inability of 27 of the 36 states of the Federation to pay salaries, absence of savings to fall back and having to deal with an elite who didn’t seem to care. All these, he said, made his government to conclude that: “life as usual is no longer affordable.” The President said the service chiefs were putting together their own assessment of the militancy situation, saying “when I have these reports, including this one (just presented), we will revisit the situation (in the region) to ensure that we succeed this time.” He however cautioned the leaders of the Delta that they had more to do than anyone else to bring peace to the region, given the influence they have on militant groups. He expressed the determination of his administration to stay focused on its key campaign promises of securing the country, fighting corruption and creating jobs through the improvement of the economy. “We are determined to make life comfortable and affordable to all Nigerians. If anybody has a country to go to, let him go, we will stay here and salvage our country.” The President who delivered his report card on the war against corruption and the efforts to secure the country repeated his call to the Niger Delta leaders to join the administration in bringing peace to the troubled region. “Please Your Excellencies, Your Majesties, Distinguished ladies and gentlemen; we all have our individual constituencies. Let us try to pacify our constituencies. Let us first recover our country, secure the country and let us invite people who will invest. Let us create jobs for our people and let us be accountable to our people where we are sitting on treasuries, whether it is local government, state or the center. We should ensure that we rebuild this country. Nobody wants to fail. So, the only way out is, if people understand and believe that we are doing our best at all levels, then we will have some peace. But it they have reason to doubt our performance and sincerity, then we will have problem,” the President added. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/11/what-buhari-told-niger-delta-leaders.html cc lalasticlala |

The chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Media and Publicity; Abdulrazak Namdas disclosed that 20 Nigerians are owing the federal government N1.2 trillion. He stated further that recovering the money could help Nigeria to overcome hard times posed by the ongoing recession. Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Abdulrazak said: “As we all know we are in a recession. AMCON was established between 2007 and 2009 as a response to global financial crisis. The Federal Government through ministry of finance guaranteed a loan that AMCON should raise 5.67 trillion naira, this was to save some of these failing financial institutions at that time, AMCON cannot recover its 2.473 trillion. This is a time we need this resources and this debt is piling up and people owing this money are still leaving and kicking and infact they don’t appear to have issues, some of them own private jets. If we can invest that money into the economy, it will assist the economy very well and it will interest you to know that out of this 2.4 trillion only 20 individuals have about 1.2 trillion to cough out.” Earlier, the house of representative mandated its committee on banking and currency to investigate the failure of bank debtors to pay up their loans to the tune of N2.4 trillion. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/10/20-people-owe-nigeria-n12t-rep_29.html cc lalasticlala |

It's October 13; you and I are going to let our nipples breathe - don't wear a bra today. October 13 is designated #NoBraDay , a day to ditch your bra and raise awareness about breast cancer. Breast cancer previously believed to be a problem of developed countries is fast becoming a major plague in developing countried. A WHO 2016 report states that almost 50% of breast cancer cases and 58% of deaths occur in less developed countries. There are several risk factors attached to breast cancer, although for the majority of women presenting with breast cancer it is not possible to identify specific risk factors. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC has identified some major risk factors that predispose women to breast cancer. Some of the risk factors include: 1. Age - The older a woman gets, the greater her chances of developing breast cancer. Most breast cancers are diagnosed after age 50. 2. Genetics - Sometimes cancer is in the gene. Women with family members who have been diagnosed of breast cancer are at a higher risk of having the cancer. 3. Early menstruation - Women who start their periods before age 12 are exposed to hormones longer thereby increases their chances of having breast cancer. 4. Late Menopause - Just like early menstruation, late menopause means a women is exposed to estrogen hormones for a longer period of time thereby increasing her chance of getting cancer. 5. Oral contraceptives - Certain forms of oral contraceptive pills have been found to raise breast cancer risk. 6. Alcohol consumption - A woman’s risk for breast cancer increases with the more alcohol she drinks. 7. Being overweight - Older women who are overweight have a higher risk of getting breast cancer than those at a normal weight. Are you exposed to any of the risk factors? Early detection still remains the major key in combating breast cancer that is why you need to take off your bra today and touch breast. If you can't touch it yourself, get a certified doctor to help you touch it. Stay healthy, don't wear a bra today. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/10/today-is-nobraday.html cc lalasticlala |

The Nigeria Labour Congress has condemned the Imo State government’s three-day work and two-day farming for workers, as recently introduced by Governor Rochas Okorocha. NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, gave this indication while fielding questions at the News Agency of Nigeria Forum on Sunday in Abuja. Accordingly, Wabba said that by the NLC directive, the law had been made ineffective, as workers had ignored it and continued with their work normally. Wabba said that the policy which implied forcefully sending workers to farm was against the International Labour Organisation Convention and also against the rules and procedures in service. Wabba said, “First, we have condemned in very strong terms what the Imo State governor tries to do by forcefully sending workers to the farm. “Don’t forget that the public service rule is very clear about what trade a worker can actually do to add to his normal routine services. “It provided that on your own volition, you can join farming as part of your normal routine activities, and that is allowed by law. “But to criminally now go to the state House of Assembly and pass a law overnight without public hearing and without consultation is against the ILO convention; it is against our rules and procedure in service. According to him, Okorocha’s policy is quite different from what other states are doing. “What the governor is doing is forced labour; we are not slaves. Even under slavery, you cannot force a worker to work against his volition. Accordingly, Wabba said that by the NLC directive, the law had been made ineffective, as workers had ignored it and continued with their work normally. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/08/we-are-not-slaves-imo-workers-reject.html cc lalasticlala |
