Health / Health Minister, Adewole Bans Chloroquine For Malaria Treatment by CeoNewshelm(m): 1:29pm On Apr 26, 2017
The Federal Government of Nigeria has banned the use of chloroquine and artemisinin monotherapy for the treatment of malaria.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, who made this announcement, stated that about N300bn was being lost annually by the Federal Government in the treatment and prevention of the disease.

According to him, the losses were incurred in government’s efforts to tackle the scourge in the country.

Adewole spoke on Tuesday in Abuja, during the commemoration of this year’s World Malaria Day.

Speaking on the theme, “End Malaria for Good: What is your Role?” The minister said, “With a new emphasis on citizen accountability and rights, I want you as a Nigerian citizen to challenge your health care provider and ask questions.

“When you have malaria and somebody wants to prescribe drugs for you, ask the health care provider: ‘Have you confirmed this is malaria?’ It is your right.

“As a citizen when your healthcare provider prescribes chloroquine or artemisinin monotherapy, say no. Doctors and nurses have been told that chloroquine is no longer useful and that it is wrong to prescribe artemisin monotherapy. For the healthcare provider, do not treat malaria without diagnosis.

“Tell yourself, ‘I must not prescribe chloroquine. I must not prescribe monotherapy for artemisinin when what we should prescribe is a combination therapy”, the minister emphasised.

Crime / VIDEO: Man Publicly Humiliated After 'forcing' Lady To Remove Biafra Cap by CeoNewshelm(m): 1:54pm On Apr 25, 2017
A man in Ogoni, Rivers state was publicly humiliated for attacking a woman because she was wearing a Biafran cap.

In the video, which is fast going viral, the woman can be seen explaining to a crowd what had transpired.

She said that after the man slapped her, demanding she got rid of the cap, she slapped him back and he attacked her. He broke her phone, her watch and inflicted injuries on her with a screwdriver.

When the man was asked what transpired, he admitted he owns the screwdriver but denied that he was the one responsible for the woman's injuries. He claimed he only approached her "like a man".

His story did not seem convincing and he was manhandled by the crowd.

Politics / Jesus Was Always Around Criminals - Yemi Osinbajo by CeoNewshelm(m): 7:35am On Apr 17, 2017
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Easter Sunday said that ''Jesus had a characteristics of being around criminals.''

Osinbajop made the claim in his Easter sermon. “Jesus before now had shown that he came to stand with criminals, sinners. For instance, John 8:3 proved to us that Jesus intervened in the case of a woman who committed adultery; in Luke 19:5, Jesus was seeing with Zacchaeus, a corrupt man. So Jesus had a characteristics of being around criminals.

“He said I have come for these people. Between the criminals was Jesus Christ; one repenting and the other mocking. Spiritually, Jesus stood between hell and heaven. His cross is a cross of mediation; he is an intercessor. All that is required is to believe in him; acceptance of his commitment he made on the cross,” the Vice President said.

Religion / Man Pays N42m Tithe To Benue Church by CeoNewshelm(m): 10:22am On Apr 15, 2017
The congregation of NKST Church High Level in Makurdi, Benue state are in shock after a man whose identity is yet to be revealed paid a tithe of N42m to the church.

NKST Church is an abbreviation for ‘Non go Kristu U Sudan hen Tiv’, meaning the Church of Christ Amongst the Tiv.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the money was paid into the UBA account of the church.

Although the resident pastor of the church, Dr. Frederick Ikyaan, initially denied knowledge of such offering, a copy of the church’s quarterly financial report, covering the months of January – March, confirmed the payment of N42million tithe to the church.

The report showed that the lodgement was the highest single offering from an individual for the quarter. The money was paid into the church’s account in January.

The breakdown of the church’s financial report showed an income of N56.2 million and an expenditure of N33.7 million within the same period.

The church’s records also showed that out of the income, N44.6 million was generated from tithe, while a single person accounted for N42 million.

The pastor had earlier denied that such amount was received as tithe but later explained that his earlier denial was based on the allegations that the donor was an appointee of the Benue State Government.

”I still stand by my words that the person that gave us that money is not an appointee of the state government. In fact, he does not even stay in Benue but is an indigene of the state," he said.

He said there was nothing wrong with the offering and insisted that the church has nothing to hide.

Politics / "I Have The Support Of President Buhari" - Hammed Ali by CeoNewshelm(m): 6:39am On Mar 22, 2017
Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hammed Ali (retd.) on Tuesday declared that he had the support of President Muhammadu Buhari on the proposed policy on payment of vehicle duty.

Ali spoke with State House correspondents shortly after emerging from the mosque located beside the President’s office inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“The truth is that when I came in one of the difficult tasks is how to deal with, ‘big men.’ Big time businessmen in the past have created a situation that they were the beneficiaries of waivers and concessions. Huge amount of money is lost in this country through waivers and concessions.

“If John decides to import things as a trader, he is meant to pay duty, why should Ali, because he is a big businessman and has a status in the society be given waiver when the law is clear about it?”

“The President agrees with us and the political will is behind us. As of today, apart from the statutory waivers, which the law allows, the President has not approved one single waiver,” he stated.

Politics / Bill To Prohibit Tribal Marks Passes Second Reading by CeoNewshelm(m): 6:16pm On Mar 21, 2017
A Bill for an Act to provide for the Prohibition of Facial Mutilation, Offences, Prosecution and Punishment of Offenders on Tuesday passed second reading in the Senate.

The Bill is also for the Protection of victims under threat of facial mutilation and other related Matters.

Sen. Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi), who sponsored the bill, said that there was no doubt that Africans of old used tribal marks as a means of proper identification.

Leading debate on the bill, Melaye said in those days, members of the same village, tribe or lineage had the same tribal marks.

Melaye said that the hometown and lineage of a child or anyone with tribal marks were immediately identified, while outsiders who did not have such marks were also spotted.

He further explained that parents also used tribal marks to lay credence to the legitimacy of their children.

However, the lawmaker said “all these reasons cannot be scientifically proven, and hence cannot enjoy the support for this harmful practice’’.

“The irony of these marks is that it makes victims subjects of mockery by friends. Imagine someone being called a tiger simply because of the thick cheeks resulting from facial marks.

“These people have been subjected to different reactions. Some have lamented the marks that are bequeathed on them as generational inheritance.

“Many have cursed the day which this dastardly act was performed on them.

“Many of the grown adults have confessed that the most terrific debacle of their lives is their tribal marks. Some have become eunuchs because of this stigma.

“Imagine a boy in the class of 25 pupils carrying a tribal mark. His mates will call him the boy with the railway line. They are emblems of disfiguration.

“Some of them have developed low self-esteem and most times treated with scorn and ridicule including rejection by the female folks.

“The reactions of people who interact with them say it dampens and lowers their spirit,’’ he said.

Melaye stated that besides the health implication of the practice, it was an infringement on the rights of children, adding that every Nigerian child deserved the right to live.

According to him, it is time a law is enacted to stop the dastardly act, as the popularity and acceptance of facial marks are waning.
