Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria's former Finance Minister has revealed her thoughts on how Donald Trump's presidency will affect Africa. Speaking in an interview with BBC on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Okonjo-Iweala said “There are two schools of thoughts, but one very interesting one, to which I subscribe is that; maybe Africa is not top of the agenda for the incoming government, therefore, that could really provide a chance for Africa to craft its own narratives.” “To make it known that African countries are really much more interested in taking charge of their own destiny and trying to find ways to do it. Look, people in developing countries are not just sitting, waiting for people to bring aid, we now have a changing dynamics, particularly with our young people. “If you look at the millenials, they are asking a different question; they want to know how they can really use what is here to catalyse the change that is needed to make developing countries, who are already contributing quite substantially to global growth to do even more.” “There are also those who are a little bit worried, that the continent may not get the attention it needs on the global stage. “And say what you may, if you look at 2030, 2050, Africa cannot be left behind, because the implication for the rest of the world are just too enormous. In terms of the demographics, the potential market it presents.” http://www.newshelm.com/2017/01/how-trumps-presidency-will-affect.html cc lalasticlala |

Some beer parlour operators in Lagos have lamented over poor patronage this festive period. The number of people, who usually relaxed and socialise at some bars and joints in the evenings, has reduced drastically at yuletide. News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, who visited a beer parlour owner, Mrs Chioma Nwanze, lamented the fall in the number of customers this festive period due to the parlous state of the economy. “Many of us are no longer making it because there is no money in town, yet the prices of beer from brewers keep on increasing. “Soon, many of us may have to return to our villages because of poor records of sales in Lagos. She said, “Sustaining our families is becoming a herculean task. There are rents and school fees to pay, in addition to feeding.” Another pub operator, Mrs Chiamaka Chukwuma, said that not many people were coming out to booze these days. Chukwuma added that in the past, he continued to sell till about 12 midnight at festive period but not anymore. Some others who usually visit joints after work said that the purpose of doing so was to relax and get relieved of tension. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/12/cchristmas-lagos-beer-parlour-operators.html cc lalasticlala |
Satguru Maharaji ji, the founder of One Love Family sect, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to constitute a Price Control Board in order to ameliorate the impact of the current economic recession on ordinary Nigerians. He also told newsmen in Ibadan on Sunday that a price control mechanism would strengthen the Naira. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sect leader spoke at a news conference which was part of activities to mark his 69th birthday. He said the government should also do the following: 1. Our government should reduce the price of cement to N300 to enable the country build homes for its people and if need be, government should empower Nigerians to import cement to bring prices down. 2. The Nigeria Airways should be revived with the old buildings and structures rehabilitated in order for the country to compete with small nations which have notable airlines like Ethiopia, Cameroun and Kenya,” the sect leader said. 3. He also called for a reduction in airfares for local travels within the country to a flat rate of N15,000. 4. Maharaji ji argued that state governments should be allowed to acquire planes in partnership with stakeholders as well as oil blocks. He accused Nigerian banks of operating as traders instead of being “ beacons of enterprise, reconstruction, innovation and productive activities.’’ 5. The sect leader called on government to compel all oil companies to release two percent of their gross profits for research in universities 6. The local refineries built by militants should not be destroyed but improved upon since they are inventions made out of necessity. He, however, expressed gratitude to the president on the steps taken so far at “ retrieving ’’ the Ajaokuta Steel Company, saying the organisation was capable of promoting meaningful industrial progress. - NAN http://www.newshelm.com/2016/12/buhari-should-reduce-price-of-cement-to.html cc lalasticlala |

H.E Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam said the Yobe State Government will partner with the National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to achieve the agency’s mandate of countering substandard and counterfeit foods and drugs and other products regulated by the agency. Speaking late this evening when NAFDAC Director General Mrs. Yetunde Oni paid courtesies on him at the Government House Damaturu, the governor described as “paramount” the need to address the challenges of substandard and counterfeit drugs, given the question of difficult terrain and the porous borders that Yobe shares with Niger Republic. The governor said the disastrous and unfortunate activities of Boko Haram insurgents witnessed in the state recently might have been influenced by the use of illicit drugs as some of the exhibits recovered from some of the insurgents by security agents seemed to suggest. H.E Governor Gaidam called on NAFDAC to sensitize the public on the perils of patronizing drug hawkers and take decisive steps to address the problems of fake drugs, drug misuse and street hawking of drugs in the state. The governor also called on NAFDAC to undertake more research and proffer ways to help farmers in the state preserve their farm produce. NAFDAC DG Mrs Yetunde Oni assured the governor that, because the activities of her agency impacts the life of every person living in the country, her agency will continue to take every step necessary to fight the problems of substandard and counterfeit drugs and all other items regulated by NAFDAC. Mrs Yetunde asked for more support from the state government and called for the establishment of a state task force to work with all stakeholders at the grassroots level to address all concerns with regard to fake drugs and drug misuse, amongst others. She also pledged to help train farmers in the state on how to store and preserve their farm produce and how to make sure that they use and sell them in a safe and clean way. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/12/photos-yobe-state-government-to-partner.html cc lalasticlala

PHOTOS: Angry Women Storm Liquor House, Beat Up Drunk Men For Not Satisfying Them Sexually Angry women of King'eero village in Kabere constituency, Kenya, on Thursday, raided the home of an illicit brew seller called chang'aa and beat up four men. The group of women numbering about 50 rained slaps, kicks and blows on the drunk men during the early morning raid. Members of Destiny of King'eero Women's Group, formed to monitor drinking joints in King'eero township, found the four men drinking at the home of a suspected chang'aa seller. The men fled to a nearby maize plantation following the ambush at the home of 50-year old Franco Okori. "They said we were only there to sire children, give them food and wash their clothes, not control their happiness," said member Martha Wairimu. "Many young men have been affected as they normally flock the home on early mornings. They do not bring anything home but still ask for food." Jane Chege, chairperson for the women's group, said they found 10 liters of chang'aa in several branded bottles. Chege said many women have been miserable as their partners, who are alcoholics, do not satisfy them sexually and cannot sire children. Okori said he had been buying the alcohol from a distributor in Westlands. "It is from Kisii. My friend brings it to me since he lives in Westlands, but my friends here beg me to sell it them. I sell it at Sh50 per glass," he said. He was frog marched with a sample to King'eero police station where he was locked up by the area OCS Njeri Nthiga. Michael Kang'ethe, Kiambu county alcoholic drinks and control board director, thanked the women for arresting the suspect, saying it was a good move in the fight against the consumption of illicit brews. Kang'ethe said they all bars and other outlets would be inspected to ensure only good quality alcohol is sold. "The government cannot control the sale of illicit brews without information. We urge the public to share information that may help us fight the menace," he added. PHOTOS BELOW: http://www.newshelm.com/2016/11/photos-angry-women-storm-liquor-house.html

He further added that 52, 803 people living with the scourge were currently on Antiretrovirals (ARVs). His words, “These statistics simply means that there are many more people who are not aware that they have the virus, that is why knowing one’s status is very important. “It is a common knowledge that an HIV positive person can be symptom free for 10 years and will continue to infect others, if not checked and treated. Being HIV positive does not translate to death with appropriate medications,” he added. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/11/9579-lagosians-tested-positive-to-hiv.html https://cdn1.medicalnewstoday.com/content/images/articles/017/17131/the-red-ribbon.jpg |

The tribal king of the land of Ogale in Bayelsa, HRH Emere Godwin Bebe Okpabi, has dragged the oil giant, Royal Dutch Shell to a London court after a devastation of Niger Delta community by oil spills. Over the last five decades, Niger Delta has given multinational oil corporations infringed exploration access but unfortunately, the territory remains alienated from all types of development and all essence of quality human life. However, in 2011 the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) exposed massive levels of pollution caused by oil spills from pipelines in the region. The monarch explains that his people are dying from strange diseases, sudden impotence, and calls for the court to compel Shell to implement the UNEP report which states that the energy giant should provide the affected communities with water, take medical history and remedy the situation. The Southwest governors' meeting which was convened at the instance of the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi was attended by the Governors of Ekiti, Mr. Ayodele Fayose; Lagos, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode; Ogun, Senator Ibikunle Amosun; and Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; with Ondo represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Rotimi Adelola . A communique issued at the end of the meeting said deliberations focused on developing and agreeing on a common and integrated strategy of regional integration and economic development in Southwest Nigeria. The meeting deliberated on the need for strong and implementable decisions that would put the Southwest Region back on the path of irreversible progress and resolved the following: 1. That the optimum interest of the Yoruba people should be the prime focus of the six state governments at all times, and that all politics within the region must henceforth be guided by the philosophy of politics of development. 2. That regional cooperation, synergy and economies of scale are critical to the development of the Region. 3. That good intentions are not enough unless backed by sincerity of purpose and commitment to action. 4. That the prosperity of any constituent part of the Region is ultimately negated if other parts are not similarly prosperous. 5. That political differences should no longer be a barrier to the economic development of the Region where the aggregate welfare of Yoruba people concerned. All the States consequently agreed to work together within the framework of a people-centred development strategy.” Furthermore, a regime of continuity, regularity and urgency of interaction was canvassed and agreed upon by the meeting. Nigeria's Sport Minister, Solomon Dalung, has stated that the country doesn't need to qualify for the 2018 world cup since she can't win the competition. Speaking in an interview with Voice of America Hausa, Dalung said Nigeria’s participation in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers is a ‘waste of money’. “The cup that we can win is the African Cup of Nations. “There is nothing again that will take us to another man’s balcony in the name of the World Cup. We already have the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. For these, we can attend such meets. “But I am opposed to the World Cup. We don’t agree to it. Conspiracy in the World Cup is too much. “We are here suffering from hunger and we don’t have money for such things. “There is the issue of bribery and favouritism, there is also the issue of corruption before you are even given the hosting rights. “That is why, even if we try many times, once it gets into the politics of the game, we can never win. “That was why this year, we had to tackle him (FIFA President, Ginani Infantino) and we said, ‘you , Infantino, if you win this election, you have to give us a position. “If not, we shall not agree.’ And you see, by the grace of God, he even picked an African as his Secretary-General, that means one day, we shall get to really lick the honey, that also means he has started taking honey and rubbing on our lips,” he added. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/11/nigeria-doesnt-need-to-qualify-for-2018.html cc lalasticlala |

As Nigerians grapple with the gory details surrounding the lynching of a young man for allegedly stealing garri, a legal practitioner, whose account went viral on Thursday claimed the victim and his gang tried to dispossess a woman of her belongings. Kingsley Ughe, General Counsel for Joint Action Aids, in a Facebook post titled, ‘A Thief and A Frenzied Mob Baying for Blood,’ said the victim was a member of a gang of notorious thieves and not a seven-year-old boy, as claimed by media reports. He explained that the young man met his dastardly end after his gang tried to dispossess a woman of her belongings, including an Infinix Note 2 phone, at Augustine Onwualu street, Orile Iganmu, Lagos last Saturday. The woman, however, held unto her phone and screamed for help. Read Ughe’s account below The true account of the young man lynched and summarily burnt to death at Orile Iganmu last Saturday speaks of the uncertainty and brevity of human life in Nigeria. It was Saturday, the 11th day of November 2016. The venue of this macabre killing orgy was at Augustine Onwualu Street, Orile Iganmu, Lagos. A woman, (name withheld) was walking along the ever busy road of Augustine Onwualu street, Orile Iganmu. She had an Infinix Hotnote 2 handset with which she was making telephone calls in high pitched voice, frantically gesticulating in the process. Close by, on the same street were a gang of 4 notorious thieves, well known in the area for their dare devilry and viciousness. They were there, waiting, prowling and surveying the entire scenery for a vulnerable victim to rob and dispossessed of their valuables as they often do in the past. And successfully too. “The woman approached. Still talking on the phone and gesticulating with her free arm. She was immediately spotted by the very perceptive eyes of this criminal gang. A brief conference amongst them, she was adjudged a soft target. There was no need for further plans or careful surveillance. After all they had done this successfully in the past. More so, their sheer ferocity makes them a sort of feared mobster in the local vicinity. But it turned out to be a miscalculation. And costly one at that! “They approached and circled the woman who was oblivious of her surrounding and the imminent attack on her person. The robbery attack was swift and very decisive. She was held from behind by two members of the gang. One of them deftly pruned her hand bag off her shoulder and the same time attempted to retrieved the telephone with which she was making calls from her other arm. The last of the gang stood guard, providing cover for the others. “They had during their planning stage misjudged the desperation of a Nigerian woman about to be dispossessed. The victim reacted swiftly. She let the hand free and held on tenaciously to her phone. A struggle ensued. The victim plaintively cried out for help. A motley crowd gathered. The other members of the gang, appropriately appraising the situation fled the scene. The fourth member was not so lucky. He continued to engage in an internecine struggle with victim for the phone. In desperation, he brought out a dagger, and cold blooded stabbed the woman repeatedly in the chest, stomach and shoulder. There is a proverb, when a strong animal flirts too much with the trap, he makes his meat available for children to share with teeth. “The gathered crowd became enraged and promptly apprehended the abandoned thief. He was beaten to stupor, Tied up and set ablaze while the maddening crowd continued to bay for his blood. “Joint Action Aid was alerted on Monday when video clips of the dastardly murder went viral on social media. We reported the yet another resort to “jungle justice” to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos state. The video clips were carefully analysed and some arrest made. The six people arrested through our efforts denied criminal culpability and brought fast talking lawyers. “More frustrating, the charred remains of the alleged thief had been removed. The area council and Orile Iganmu police claimed ignorance of the whereabouts of the corpse. Thus we have a dead zone situation. No dead body, no witnesses and then, most understandably, an unwilling complainant still battling for survival from the grievous multiple stabbing at the hospital. We returned back to the office, again defeated. Frustrated. And defeated. The rule of law is vanquished again. The rule of the jungle continues to win triumphantly.
