Hello everyone. I've been an ardent silent follower here. I wrote my GRE sometime in 2012 during my NYSC (first and only attempt). It was this year I decided to further my studies; I didn't require GRE to undertake my MSc. Came here and reported my scores, also asking for where to register for a re-take (geniuses plenty for this thread; I felt so bad with my low scores) and Oludare01 encouraged me to apply with what I had. Though, not so many schools still had their applications open, thus, limiting my choices but he was more than helpful (who says there are no good people left). He took out his time (he even prayed with me sef lol and always had words of encouragement for me) and one would think we go waaay back.
My profile:
GRE: Q 147; V 151; AW 4.0
BSc. Industrial Chemistry 4.58/5
Msc. Energy and Environmental Mgt (Merit)
3 years combined experience in Quality control and QHSE; co-authored one paper and another one currently awaiting publication.
No TOEFL.

I applied to four schools (all the applications were done towards the end of Jan)
1) Mississippi State Uni (PhD Chemistry. Environmental Chemistry Concentration)
2)Michigan Tech Uni (PhD Environmental & Energy Policy)
3)Tennessee Tech Uni (PhD Environmental Science; Chemistry option)
4) Clarkson Uni (PhD Environmental Science & Engineering): Though a private uni but they fund.

I had 3 LORs (2 academic and 1 professional)

So I just received a congratulatory email from Tennessee Tech and they said to expect the official admission/offer letter via email within 5 days. I pray the offer is juicy.

I am a silent and religious follower of this thread. I recently got a reject mail from Kansas state. The email stated that I was qualified but no grant funding.. no professor has funds... blah blah. They said they were sorry that not all qualified candidates are usually accepted because of their low acceptance rate.
I had previously contacted the grad coordinator before who said funds were available. I don't even understand but it is well.
I pray we all get into the best programs with full funding.

Just keep believing, I am sure d good news is around d corner

University of New Mexico. Saw 2 attachments and thought one was my acceptance and the other my "funding" letter so I hurriedly opened it. You can imagine my shock when I saw "I regret" somewhere. I could have reported it but I came online and saw you celebrating PennState, so I went back to silently moan.

I guess it is -2/8 now for me.

Baba, just like drhopeful too, I am quite confident ur admission plus funding is somewhere within the pool of application. Just be patient baba. I believe it will come shortly

And it's Penn State breaking the ice!!!!! Acceptance with full funding for first year. Subsequent funding dependent on 3.0gpa blah blah and availability of funding..... Now I am relieved!!!! Thank you guys for all the encouragement!!!

Hello house, I hope we are all doing great. So, I was accepted at KSU for PhD in Chemical Engineering and I would like to share my experience with you all, since we started this journey together and will hopefully all get into great programs at the end!
This is my second application cycle, I was rejected from all the schools I applied to for Fall, 2016. I was disconsolate as you'd imagine. Luckily, I stumbled upon this thread and gained so much information from it. I contacted a very active and helpful member, SirRiddy-he gave me some tips and suggested I re-write the GRE (my previous score was 310), IELTS-8/9.
So, I did and got a better score (332), applied to a wider range of schools and got accepted into one of them. I would like to say, happening upon this thread made all the difference. If one makes use of the information posted here judiciously, great improvements in one's profile would be made.
Soo, thanks to everyone that has contributed to this thread in one way or the other! And special thanks to SirRiddy of course!!!

A lot of schools will respond latest next week.

Of course, I know some others like UofH will respond in April but we need to brace ourselves.

Where is Adetola007? Did you get into LSU's Chemical Engineering program? Na me and you apply for that program o. You have remained radio-silent.

I am suspecting Feb 28 for KSU and March 13 for UH ...

For IELTS, u can send ur scores to 5 schools for free during about 1month after u write the test but anything after that u will pay 2k5 to apply 4 ur result to be sent any courier charges for sending to the desired destination. U can go to their office if u r in lagos for further clarification. Thanks

@drhopeful, I think you should stay hopeful , your chances are great n besides u r not alone on this. Some of us haven't too n for someone like me that submitted the latest of my applications not less than 6months ago. As long as it is gonna b good news, it's not too late

How does these 3 scenarios work?

I was thinking of how to ask while still here. I have a strong belief TAMUK would come thru and be sweet also.

As long as you resume early, most times there is still some assistantship offer left.

The guy who got RA was through another friend who was an outgoing research student of the superior. Apparently, he assists him with the recruitment of new RAs based on their excellent working relationship.

They know a lot of foreigners will jump automatically at d offer if it looks very easy, maybe it's why some give assistantship uppon resumption and after 1st year.

$1,000 annual scholarship + in state tuition. I completed my application roughly 3weeks ago. Rolling admission I guess.

Will go and battle for Assistantship if I go there.

Congratulations boss. It is easy getting assistantship if u go der, that's if u eventually make that decision. My friend who got admitted to TAMUK on a similar deal got a RA just b4 he moved. Another got GA plus tuition waiver uppon arrival. I am quiite hopeful the oustanding applications hold something better. This is a breathe of fresh air, u can start making plans of packing ur bags now

With UH application closing date for Mech Eng at Mar 1, there is probably still a long wait ahead, but as long as it's good news, I really don't mind.

For KSU, with the applicants in this forum alone, we should just av an association already .

Baba, i think youu are good to go. However, u didn't mention if uu wiill be interested in getting funding. If you and u don't mind going 4 a phd, I'd recommend you include 1phd programme in ur application plans. That's besides you applying early if u are considering this year's fall

Well, there are 3 options I know of @ d moment ;

1. Get someone in the abroad to pay 4 u and u reimburse accordingly
2. Fund ur PayPal account with 205$. You can use 5different accounts with $50 monthly slot(i knoow of gtb n access)
3. Use BY Mafit jejeje. Record 4rm dis forum has it that they are legit.

Well, I paid sometimes last year when exchange rate was friendly 270/$1 I guess with access bank, there system automatically picks ur home address which u entered during application as billing address when u want to pay. As long as u don't change it regardless of whose atm u r using, u should be fine. That was the challenge i had last time

I agree with you on discussing the state of our applications. I am quite miffed right now because I have not submitted any of my applications. I am yet to get my undergraduate transcript that I requested almost 2 months ago. I have put so much into this and I won't let any sloppy school be my obstacle. I have mailed grad coordinator at UH to inform her about the delay and inquire if I can submit the transcript after the application deadline. The other deadline at LSU health centre is March 1, although I want to submit much earlier than the deadline.

@Scholastica16 , Yes, I am applying to only 2 US schools, I didn't start my application process early enough so I wasn't able to meet most deadlines coupled with the cost of applying to different schools. I am cautiously optimistic of getting in to the two schools if only I can be able to submit this damn application. In addition, both guarantee funding for all admitted PhD students in my course. (I Would never apply to a school that's equivocal about funding)

N.B: I would really appreciate anyone willing to help me go through and critique my SOP before I submit. Thanks.

@ d bolded, naiija schools sha . u can proceed with application with an unofficial transcript if youu have one, @least m sure ksu n uh accepts student's copy for admission processing. Infact uh grad school has evaluated my transcript already.

Yes oo. A friend of mine got admitted for masters this spring, got no funding initially but on getting to the state, he was given GA with tuition waiver

If it was only application fee, I would av managed, but money to send each of the results (transcript, GRE, IELTS)

Have u been reaching out to faculties n vice versa?

I started the application with the intention to apply for masters but after my experience last year, I tot it was better to apply 4 phd as it increases chances for funding. Where and what term r u applying for ?

All my applications are against Fall 2017 as well. PhD for Chemical Engineering (as funding was a priority) but I don't have a Master's degree. I applied to a couple A- and the rest B+ and B- rated schools.

1. Michigan State Uni (11% Acceptance rate )
2. UofUtah
3. UofH
4. LSU
5. UNM
6. Mississippi State Uni
7. KSU
8. USF

Except Utah, I was able to meet the priority deadlines for the rest of the schools. Don't really know what to expect so I am hoping I spread my risks well because I changed my list alot.

Yeah, I applied for phd too. I would've love to apply to LSU, ULL, Michigan State University but for the cost implications.

I applied to 8 schools. Thought I was done with everything (including official score reports) but BY Mafit let me down and forgot to send my GRE since last year until a few days ago. Not like it hurts my chances as most schools let me know I could be evaluated without the official scores.

UofH were quite stern with me and refused to consider my application complete until the TOEFL score was reported. I didn't break a sweat though, as it is still fully ahead of the February deadline.

You seem to be applying to only 2 schools in the US? Correct me if I am wrong.

@ d bolded, I submitted my application with an unofficial IELTS score. I read somewhere on their website that admission could be processed with it. Even my transcript was uploaded. And so far, I hve not been contacted that my file is incompplete

Evening friends... I understand the primary purpose of this group is to provide necessary information that will help members ace the GRE and we av done well in this regards. However, the main goal is to secure admission (with funding) . Please I suggest we discuss our admission applications, efforts we av made in reaching out to faculties n possibly the status of ouuur application if any yet. I believe we can learn one or two things from each other's experience so far. I also understand individuals can want to be discreet with their applications until fruition, it's fine.


I applied to UofH n KSU for fall 2017. I completed both applications last year. I had admission for MS Mech Engr Fall 2016 in SDSM&T and SIT last year but I didn't pursue further since neither came with funding option, I deferred SDSM&T to fall 2017 n m still hopeful of securing the service of a faculty for a potential GA. The few times I have gotten replies to my email is when they want to explain that they r not taking new research students.
